Konami ceases triple-A console production on all but PES

I think it's silly to be worried about them not making another MGS. It's more reasonable to be worried about them making another good/charming MGS game with an entirely different team. It's definitely going to come out eventually, but unless something changes within Konami internally, I have so very little hopes that it'll actually turn out even decent. Just look at everything else they've done.

Well, there's a whole lot more to it than that. Japanese gaming moved over to mobile to suit the needs of an on-the-go lifestyle, but there's still a subset of gamers willing to buy these titles. Koei Temco is indicative of that - while their games don't break the banks, they do alright.

The real issue is finding a balance between mobile and home gaming. It's possible. I think Capcom is a pretty great example and doing better now than they used to. You have mobile games bringing up a good portion of money, and console games taking care of that shit so you aren't leaving anything on the table. If you can find a balance, it works.

(Obviously some companies can get away with not fucking with mobile ala Koei Tecmo, but that's a discussion for another day)

Couple that with better budgets, and I think Japan is finding its place better now than when they did with the PS3/Xbox 360. TGS had a huge slew of games coming out slated for next year, some of them incredibly niche. It's not as much as the PS2 days, but I do think it's getting much better.

We might continue to see smaller budget titles from Japan. I don't think Capcom is the powerhouse that it once was. Like other Japanese developers, in many ways Capcom is headed in the same route as Konami. Like Kojima, both Shinji Mikami (Resident Evil) and Keiji Inafune are long gone. These guys defined Capcom. Who is left there?

Capcom is not taking any risks with AAA development. Last year Ono said "For instance, if a game doesn't sell over 2 million copies, then we'd have to put the brakes on any plans for a sequel."

Capcom, Sega and many other Japanese companies are moving away from consoles to focus on mobile or other more profitable industries. For Japanese developers the console industry is virtually dead. Japanese companies are no longer supporting big name Japanese developers with grand visions in the AAA space. The costs are going up but the audience is shrinking. It's not suistanable.I mean Sega said this directly earlier this year.

I'm not mad at Konami, they're making a business decision that they feel is in their best interests. What I am mad about is that there will be so many franchises lost to mobile games and pachinko machines. There's no reason to sell their IPs, but it feels like they're content with letting them rot, I'll just post a fav of mine and be done with it

Konami should just licence out their properties to other devs/pubs and take royalties, while making whatever pachinko and mobile shit they want to make.

EDIT: Whatever happened to the core Suikoden team that was there for Suiko 1-3? I feel like Suikoden would be a pretty easy game to transition to "spiritual successor" via kickstarter. None of the titles were exactly pushing the boundaries of technology when they were released, and the castle/army building with quick, 6-person turn-based battles would still be fun in a different setting.

The knowledge that the potential of PT will never be realised is a wound in my heart as big as the scar left by the cancellation of Firefly.

Oh well, Silent Hills will rest forever in my heart.

My only hope is that the franchises get sold off in private sale, at this point. I doubt they'll publicly rid themselves of the franchises, so that's really our best hope.

Ugh guys

This is just a rumor.

I mean it says "according to french website gameblog".

They're hiring for "high-end" development for both LA and tokyo offices.

In contrast though, all their current non-mgs listings are for mobile devs.

There's no dates on any of those job postings. And with Konami's well-documented miscommunication between departments, even before all of this mess started... I wouldn't read into that. There's so much more evidence to suggest that they're bailing on console games than not.

They need to fill up that new building

Yeah, a new headquarters in the gambling capital of the US. I wonder what that's all about?

HIT THE LEVER

This may be the last MGS for most of you, but there's about a dozen casinos in my area so I'll always have a chance to play the newest iterations of Konami's biggest franchises.

LOL!

Because the guy is known to waste company resources? Even with his impressive resume that will hinder a company taking him on.

Who gives a fuck as long as his games make profit? Has any numbered MGS ever lost money? These games will be played for decades and will keep bringing in revenue for that long.

If his games DIDN'T make a profit, then you would be right.

If the Mobile bubble ever crashes some companies are going to get hit hard. Not saying it will, but weirder things have happened.

"You mean we can spend less than a million on development, and rake in millions and millions of profit?!"

Pretty sure something like that happened.

Well if every company thought like that then these current gen system are going to have a barren game line up soon. While i love games like Shovel Knight and Rogue Legacy i think the gaming landscape would be much much worse off and wouldn't substance these expensive consoles if triple A titles like MGS5 ceased to be created!....and if this did happen then there wont be a PS5 or XB2 as it just wont be worth it if all there is are these indie small risk big profit type endeavours.....maybe Apple have got the right idea!

Also guess i can kiss goodbye to Gradius 6 ever happening then :(

If true..

I think it'd be awesome if Rockstar took over MGS. I love their story telling, and a modified Fox engine renamed Rox Engine to add NPC AI and the dynamic lighting they're known for.

I know a lot of you would disagree, of course.

This is all of course fantasy and would never happen.

That's how I feel, but I think the console space is still too popular world wide for all companies. Plus, Konami has their other business sections that rake in the cash, like their gambling division.

Them cutting console development is probably a sound business decision so far as they're concerened, just not a popular one.

Wait I thought Metal Gear Rising 2 was still coming. Did that get canceled?
At the moment, I don't think this will actually come to fruition unless a miracle occurs through their relationship with Konami. The tasteless "2" teaser from earlier this year was supposedly just a nod to Rising's second launch anniversary. Quinton Flynn offhandedly confirmed he was supposed to do temp voice-over work for the sequel, but the sudden rift between Konami and Kojima apparently put the full brakes to development. It was additionally clear there was dispute over the actual plot of the game as well. The lead writer from Revengeance wanted to pursue the initial narrative for Rising as an interquel between MGS2 and MGS4 exploring his transformation into a cyborg ninja, plus his mission to save a young Sunny. On the other hand, Kojima wanted an unrelated prequel that showcases Gray Fox fighting against "nano-machine powered zombies" for whatever reason.

I still hope it does cause I'd love another Metal Gear Rising quality soundtrack to put in my car. It is Konami though, and without Kojima to steer the train perhaps it's best left alone.

Not that bemani is considered "AAA" by their standards, but man I get scared for Bemani sometimes. We just got Round 1 here in seattle and I just have fears that one day Konami will just say "fuck e-amuse" and kill everything. Including what we barely have in the US
