Kotaku: Games Like Project Phoenix Ruin Kickstarter For Everyone Else

I'm surprised they got away with being funded if the first paragraph above was in the original pitch.

Then again, I guess before they've got funding you have to give them the benefit of the doubt that they'll hire more people...

Exactly why I didn't Back it back then. As a game programmer, I've seen way too many artists groups think they can make a game with minimal input from programmers... They almost always fail, with either no product or a very beautiful unfun one (or even under/over designed).

[EDIT]
Also, a lot of programmers (at least, those I know) had the same experience as me and are reluctant to hop later in a project mainly driven by artists. So even if they search for programmers to hire, they have trouble finding good willing ones.

STOP SHITTING ON MY MOTHER'S HEADSTONE
I mean, there are people who get turned off by failures like this, but I think the crowdfunding model is too well established for it to be in any real danger in the near future.

The kickstarters I backed:

Wasteland 2: Turned out fine. Not amazing, but what I expected.
Takedown: This was a mess.
Republique: Perfectly fine.
Shadowrun Returns: Amazing.
Banner Saga: Amazing.
Carmageddon: Reincarnation: This was a mess.
Grim Dawn: Perfectly fine.
Super Retro Squad: Scam.
Oculus Rift: Amazing.
Pillars of Eternity: Amazing.
Arakion: In progress.
Sir, You Are Being Hunted: Perfectly fine.
GODUS: I knew going in this was Molyneux so I knew what to expect.
Torment: Tides of Numenera: Amazing despite some issues.
The Gallery: Pretty cool.
Divinity OS: Amazing.
Shovel Knight: Amazing.
Consortium: Weird but great.
Camelot Unchained: In progress.
7 days to die: perfectly fine.
Legend of Iya: In progress
Ghost Song: In progress
Tangiers: In progress
Project Phoenix: well...
MN9: lol
Shantae: Amazing
HLD: Amazing
Stasis: Amazing
Windforge: Pretty cool
Dex: Pretty cool
Rain World: Pretty cool
La-Mulana 2: In progress
Kingdom Come: In Progress
Olympia Rising: Pretty cool
Duelyst: Great, but then they went f2p
Witchmarsh: In progress
Deer God: Pretty cool
Timespinner: In progress
Mighty tactical shooter: In progress
Elysian Shadows: In progress
NightCry: Pretty cool
Underworld Ascendant: In progress
Crowfall: In progress
Slain: Bad at first, then fixed
Bloodstained: In progress
Bard's Tale IV: In progress
Shenmue 3: In progress
Pixel Noir: In progress
Nelo: In progress
Anew: In progress

Overall, my backed-to-disappointmend ratio is incredibly low, and beyond Project Phoenix and MN9, the ones that I wasn't extremely happy with were ones that I expected little from anyway. Except SRS. Fuck that guy.

A lot of people are talking like this should be some cautionary tale for every Kickstarter. This thing had red flags all over it during the campaign, the most obvious and unbelievable of which was that the thing was led by a violinist. No one who did any real digging would've spent a dime on this.
