Maybe Microsoft could send him a Birthday cake:

You mean they would send the email where to download it and how to construct it. LOL.

Knowing that he saved Earthbound from cancellation is just fucking awesome. My respect for him went up so much more.

Iwata is a great dude. He may have blundered quite a bit lately but he's as down-to-earth as they come and a humble CEO who genuinely harbors a care for gaming as a means of art. As bad as Wii U is doing the 3DS is unrelenting in picking up the slack.

I hope he can succeed in turning things around and I wish him a happy birthday.

I knew about Earthbound but not about the Pokemon G/S quote. It's even more awesome because it was later into Iwata's carrieer. It sounds like it was assembly code by the way.

Happy Birthday Iwata!

I don't care what they say about you, anyone
who thinks good content is worth money,
who can say no to the temptations of crappy DLC,
who thinks subscriptions are not a good idea,
who can delay a bad game to make it good even under pressure,
who has actually made a worthwhile game,
who believes physical and digital mediums can coexist,
who believes in promoting positive images of gaming for all ages and genders,
who thinks gaming can train your mind and your body.
who can host a video program better than Spike,
who can do a better interview than IGN,
who make an reasonable, intelligent and fact-based argument when your shareholders ask stupid questions,
who will do things even though nobody else is,
who believes that, in the end, what matters is the games and how fun they are
has to be a pretty awesome CEO.

nice...

happy bday Iwata-San

December 6th is Iwata's birthday? Wow, I share a birthday with this good man.

You're getting a lot of flak recently, but you know what? Stick to your guns. Your ideals for the gaming world are the ideals that I as a gamer have learned to take to heart. I wish you a good birthday, and a good future.

Not to mention he won't fire his employee or cut their pay check and he himself cut his own pay check when the 3DS was struggling in sales.

Iwata is awesome for Nintendo and the people asking for him to be fired are idiots who properly do a worse job if they were CEO of Nintendo.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Iwata! Certain people on here like to think you're one of the worst CEOs because you don't do what they want, but at least you still keep Nintendo developing fun games in their purest form, where gamers don't have to worry about day-one DLC, always online DRM, floods of shooters and unnecessary violence, abundant quick-time events, infectious micro-transactions, paid internet subscriptions, and a constant focus on online features at the expense of actual social contact.

You certainly have your flaws when it comes to business and marketing, but when it comes to actual game development, there is no better CEO to direct Nintendo's legendary game designers.

May you overcome future challenges with the mighty force of a HURRICANE FICUS!

Happy Birthday even though you can't draw Kirby.

Haha, still the same haircut, Iwata gonna stay Iwata !

Happy Bday to you Mr.Iwata ! :)

Now after you've done partying with the the bitches and blow, can you please put some pressure on a proper account system ? k thx bye.

He's not my favorite CEO, I hate all CEOs.

Hope he gets fired soon so we can get someone more in the know at the helm of Nintendo, or else it will crash and burn just like Sega did.

I would love to see some sources for this. I knew he was involved with Earthbound, but not to that degree. And I didn't know he had anything to do with Pokemon Gold/Silver, aka my gateway drug to Nintendo games proper (through Smash Bros of course, which was a HAL venture, so did he have a hand in that too?).

He programmed the prototype for Smash
From the Brawl Iwata asks:
Iwata: Because we don’t often have the opportunity to sit down and talk about Smash Bros., I’d like to use the last part of this interview to turn back the clock and talk about the start of this series, beginning in 1999 with the Nintendo 64 title Super Smash Bros. You and I were responsible for developing this prototype.

Sakurai: Right. We called it "Kakuto-Geemu Ryuoh" (Dragon King: The Fighting Game)

Iwata: At that point in time, we weren’t utilizing any Nintendo characters, and while you handled the planning, specs, design, modeling and movement, I worked on programming all by myself. In some respects, it was the ultimate handcrafted project.

Sakurai: The team setup was like one that would be making a game for the NES! (laughs) We had one additional person that helped us with sound though.

It's just so fascinating. Thanks to everyone who confirmed Iwata's role in three of my favorite series (Mother, Smash Bros and Pokemon). I really appreciate all the more that a man with his experience in the trenches and who can understand that quality games are the integral key to Nintendo's future is in charge of that future. I would love to shake his hand and tell him that those three games in particular shaped my future as a lifelong Nintendo fan.
