"Brief outline of Akira:
After a psychic blast by a young boy called Akira destroys most of Japan, it is rebuilt
as Neo Tokyo. 31 years later, Tetsuo, a member of a bike gang crashes into a child
with psychic powers. Similar powers begin to awaken in him and he uses it
destructively to prove to his gang and the word that he's not a weak child anymore
and shouldn't be treated as such. Tetsuo's powers grow beyond his physical capacity
as his girlfriend, his bike gang and the army try to save him from destroying himself
and Neo Tokyo."

i hope you continue thinking this because then if its really great you will be ever so pleased. as of now, saying something like this doesn't make any sense since there is nothing set in stone about the film.Scipius said:When I first watched it in the 90s I had much the same reaction. Watching it again recently it is apparent Otomo was perhaps a little too ambitious, but it definitely holds up if you pay attention. A film with few compromises.
Also made me realise what a year 1988 was for animation; Akira, My Neighbour Totoro and Grave of the Fireflies.
If the live-action Hollywood version pans out, it will suck the big one, though.
really? well maybe theres a connection between them. i love them all, so maybe i just like the certain things that are common between them whereas they aren't your taste.Red Scarlet said:I was told to watch it twice for stuff to click, but I couldn't be bothered to watch it more. It's like a bunch of those other 'omgsogood' anime movies that I'm supposed to like but don't (Akira/GitS/Mononoke).
Vorador said:Well, i DID liked it myself. Sure the plot doesn't make a lot of sense, but that's because it tries to compress a whole lot of history (enough for a trilogy) into a single two hour movie. There's a lot of plot points unexplained, and everything happens pretty fast.

TheExodu5 said:Yeah see that's that kind of artsy bullshit I can't just buy into. If you want to give me a story about Kameda and Tetsuo's friendship...just do that. Don't throw it into the worst sci-fi storyline ever.

It's at least the best animated, Steamboy excepting.
It's hard since I only have a ps3 and controller to type with now.Sanjay said:Thats just stupid, me listing them for you. You can either think of them or not.
Sure I have no problem with it being the best art and how it has influenced since on and stuff like that but that for me does not make it a good film.

That was the first GitS movie. Akira's about a jerk turning into a blob.evilink said:To me, Akira is only about the struggle to survive in impossible situations, the need for identity, our detrimental relation to everything we touch, and our spiritual position in the universe.
duckroll said:Akira is a milestone for animation films because it was an animated film targeted at an adult audience, based on a popular manga. The story is over condensed, and isn't very good to begin with. The animation and music is AWESOME, and so are the action sequences. Outside of Japan, it gained popularity because there was a boob scene and there's tons of violence. There really isn't anything to "get", but I think most people who are interested in animation should watch Akira at least once, just to know what it's like. It's not a great movie, but it was definitely sort of revolutionary.
Evilink said:Long time Akira fan here, I just wanted to say as a completely random opinion, that the Orion home video eng dub release is superior to the digital version released a few years back. Yeah, your probably thinking I'm on crack because the new release is obviously the accurate translation and the vhs is the WTF translation. I love the old tape for the acting though, that's where it shines, it's not always what is said so much as it is how it's said. The original version maintains the gist or concept of the story and still manages to walk away with two righteous black eyes and a handful of bloody chiclets above the new release. The acting well preserved teen angst and rebellion in a society deprived of any respect or sense of morale, you can just feel it in their voices. The new version, while probably accurate to a T, left me a little empty.( forget about nostalgia) The life of the characters, the connection that was present before wasn't there anymore...but it does look good...and is still to this day the number one anime which all others are compared to.

It suuuuuuuuuure is, and they did that well. Name any other jerk/blob animated works that have been given so much praise.Freshmaker said:Akira's about a jerk turning into a blob.
I agree with you, American audiences latched on to boob shots and violence because there weren't a lot of anime(animation in general?) at the time with adult content that were given so much exposure. The story though I think is underrated as far as animated features are concerened. The human race, much like Tetsuo's growth from child to super human, to blob, to anti matter uber energy, (or whatever he is supposed to be) is still trying to figure out why we exist, our evolution, the next big step. Along the way in our pursuit we leave a trail of devastation, killing our natural resources, the planet, each other, the list goes on. So where do we go when we've achieved everything that is within our understanding, how do we adapt or grow within a changing ecology, what does the human race(world) do when they've become so obsessed with self gratification that they choose to ignore the warning signs of their current situation? We will either die off, or evolve and move forward...(or maybe move to some other planet to fuck up). The forces at work within the film, surrounding the characters, align so well with our own predicament. Right down to the subtle things, the need to fit in, importance of family, pride, honor, or whatever. We're still looking to see where we come from, and searching for a way to get some where else, regardless of what's going on in the now. The themes in Akira are timeless, that's why people keep watching it, that and bitch'n animation, sound track.duckroll said:Akira is a milestone for animation films because it was an animated film targeted at an adult audience, based on a popular manga. What about Death Note didn't make sense? One of its problems was that at times it made too much sense and started roaming into the realm of pretentiousness.Smelly Tramp said:Complaining about the movie not making sense even though you have a Death Note avatar. That's rich.
