LTTP : Dragon Quest Builders : Square Enix's GOTY 2016

Having finally beat Dragon Quest Builders on PS4 yesterday, I wanted to share more of my impressions of this excellent game and how it shamelessly took a well-known concept (open world sandbox construction game) and transformed, adapted it to the Dragon Quest theme.

Context : I am quite fond of Dragon Quest, even if the only game I've played to completion is DQ VIII and I watched Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibōken when I was younger (and its ridiculously awesome opening in Arabic). I always found the combination of beautiful music, character design (sure all the MC look the same but there is a lot of diversity in the NPCs, there are children, adults, old people, fat people, thin people, etc) and monster design by Akira Toriyama and sense of aventure great. There is something with that series, you know what you're getting and are just happy to play.

DQB is one of the few games alongside Metal Gear Solid and Tomba! where I immediately bought the game right after playing the demo. Seriously, the game and the demo is so good, you'll know right away by playing it if you'll enjoy the game.

Are you a boy ? Or a giiiiiirl ?

At first it looks like Minecraft meets Dragon Quest, but it is really not. While the Minecraft influence is obviously strong (create things in the game world by using blocks) it is more an Action RPG with its crafting system amped to the 11.
You play in the original Dragon Quest/Warrior universe, in the "Bad Ending" timeline (spoilers for a 30 years old game you get when first booting the game : Where the hero accepts Lordragon's offer to rule over half of the world instead of slaying him), humanity is declining after losing its creative ability. You are the Builder, a human with the long lost ability of constructing things. From that point, your role will be to restore this barren world of Alfegard, build houses and cities, exploring the world, recruiting citizens and fight monsters.

Here the main character, chilling in his town.

If Minecraft is the standard Lego set, DQB is the deluxe themed set. There isn't a lot of freedom in the game, you are limited to exploring, discovering secrets, doing secret challenges and quests. These quests usually revolve around finding some kind of material/ingredient, killing monsters, finding and escorting a NPC or building something with the plans provided or instructions.

A battle system as complex as FFXV's

The game can feel limited especially compared to Minecraft (you can only build towns inside a perimeter, your inventory isn't unlimited, etc) but theses limitations are actually a strength considering it is an ARPG, as it gives player focus for what they should build and go on with the game. If you are like me and liked Minecraft's concept but felt a little lost with the "build your own fun" thing, DQB is perfect for you.

There is a lot of humor in the writing.

There are four chapters in the game, and even if you character is essentially rebooted in each chapter (losing all your recipes and equipment), each time they succeed in feeling fresh as they change their setting, tone and objectives. One time you are on greenlands trying to rebuild a town, another you are in a plagued world, trying to rescue and heal survivors, etc.

Metal Slimes and their notoriously high resistance to everything.

The graphics are pretty clean and colorful which is always pleasing to see and the PS4 runs without problems
There is apparently a micro-stuttering problem some people noticed at some points of the game, I did not personally
, the music is great (and you can even get an item later that transforms it into their 8-bit tunes), the writing is witty and funny (once again, kudos to Square Enix French localization team), the story is surprisingly dark at moments, but the game always feel fun to play.

I liked :
- The fun.
- The controls - the camera is surprisingly good.
- The building.
- The exploration.
- The music.
- The length of the game, it is quite long.
- The motorcycle, allowing you to travel fast across the land.

I did not like :
- Some of the design choices feel weird : why can't I choose how many items I can build out of materials and can only build one set or the maximum of them ?
- Why the same button for the menu and action ?
- The combat is serviceable at best, but not the most memorable thing you'll remember from the game.
- No cross save feature between Vita and PS4
- The motorcycle, it feels OP at times.

TL;DR : Dragon Quest Builders is great, one of the best games of 2016. If you are on the fence, download the demo and if you like it, you can buy the whole game without hesitation. Just be careful to not pour too many hours in it, as the saves do not carry over. I'll gladly preorder the sequel Square Enix *wink wink*

You can download the demo for PS4 here and for PS Vita here.
Dragon Quest Builders is available in digital and retail on PS4 in the United States of America, Europe and Japan, on Vita in digital in USA, Europe and Japan and retail in Japan and in English in Asia and on PS3 in Japan.

The game had a lot of potential, but as a long time Dragon Quest fan, I was very upset that it was level based where progress reset every chapter and that it just felt like a series of fetch quests. I hope they retool the structure of the game for a sequel to make something that feels like Dragon Quest.

Really enjoyed my playthrough of the game. If there is a sequel I'd love to have the combat improved.

World of Final Fantasy for me, but this is also brilliant.

It had so much charm. As someone who played Minecraft for 15 mins and got bored, never to return, I was glued to Builders.

Minecraft clone... why am I not surprised.
Calling it a Minecraft clone is actually deceptive. It is actually a pretty different game, since it is built around a lot of traditional RPG elements such as an actual story, quests, and NPCs.

It's way more than that and very far from it unless you mean absolutely any game that has a building feature automatically means Minecraft when games like that existed before it's existence

I know this game is HUGE with the kids. It's obviously a generational thing I can't understand. But yes, this would definitely be Square's most popular game of 2016 for that reason.

It looks pretty charming.

I bought this for my wife and she tore into it over winter break no lie probably put upwards of 70 hrs into it
She liked this more than minecraft, the fact that it had more structure than minecraft was a really big positive.
Definitely her goty.
For my part I did indeed enjoy the game

I really liked it aswell. Agree with alot of the OPs points, except for the length. I played a fair amount and got about half way through. There is a lot of content. This can be a good or a bad thing.

How long did it take you to beat it, OP?

I actually really liked the way they did it. Each of the first three chapters is designed to make you try and do different things. It keeps you from relying too much on what you did in the earlier chapter and gives a more unique experience to them. Then in the final chapter almost everything you've learned is opened up and you are given much more freedom to act.

It is pretty classic design and very much in the vein of DQIV where each chapter felt widely different because of the different characters and skillsets and stories, and in the final chapter it all comes together...

It's fantastic, about to wrap up chapter 2.
Coming from someone who doesn't give a shit about minecraft and hasn't played a DQ since PS2 era. Demo pulled me in.

As a long time DQ fan, I am in love with this game. This is coming from someone who doesn't like Minecraft and can't get into it despite numerous attempts. The music is wonderful and the story is pretty cool, especially for someone who has been a fan since DQ1 (Dragon Warrior). I've been playing it quite a lot recently.

I worry that a lot of people will dismiss this as a Minecraft clone when in fact it is quite different.

thanks for showing you never actually played this.

anyone who played it would know it's not a "minecraft clone".

...anyway, this was indeed one of the most enjoyable games i had the pleasure of playing last year. i soooo didn't want the story to end - i absolutely loved it!
the wonderful DQ music elevated the experience even more..... i really hope there is a sequel with co-op play.

I think this will be a game that flies under a lot of people's radar and will be "discovered" a lot as it gets cheaper and hits bargain bins. I look forward to the LTTP threads where people wonder why nobody told them about this game before.

I own the game. Kids love it. I think it's charming, but I just could not get into it myself. But the kids just love it to death. It and World of Final Fantasy...

Addictive game with a handful of annoying issues, like the personal item space highlight resetting to the first square when you switch between Colossal Coffer pages.

SEGOTY was FFXV, but DQ3DB is cute. Would have been a much better game with multiplayer. Got really boring without it.

I love this game. It didn't entirely come together for me (reset button each chapter, gear crafting progress limitation, not enough building-related goals, the dream cinematics were mostly superfluous), but I still had a ton of fun and see it as the potential precursor to what could be GOTY material. So many good ideas to build off of.

I hope the designers of Dragon Quest Builders go back and play games like Actraiser and Dark Cloud for ideas on goal-oriented building, and progress tied to building rather than gear crafting. Actraiser's persistent zones with tons of little goals for building things in certain places is what I pine for, specifically.

Ahh, I hope the dev team keeps building on what they did with DQB. So much potential.

OP, have you explored Terra Incognita yet? It's available after you finish the first chapter, and some of the mechanics (like inventory size and base area) are improved.

Not quite my GOTY, but pretty close. Never played a second of Minecraft before I bought this on name alone. Turned out to be a fantastic game. Not surprising that SE has done fuck all to capitalize on the excellent word of mouth buzz this game generated.

Really enjoyed my playthrough of the game. If there is a sequel I'd love to have the combat improved.
Yeah it is my main gripe with the game. The boss fights were OK as they used the environment and your items but the standard battle against minions is pretty boring :/

I really liked it aswell. Agree with alot of the OPs points, except for the length. I played a fair amount and got about half way through. There is a lot of content. This can be a good or a bad thing.

There is sure a lot of content, but it was so fun I blazed through it, so I don't really know. Maybe 40ish ? The lack of clock is a pity.

I think this will be a game that flies under a lot of people's radar and will be "discovered" a lot as it gets cheaper and hits bargain bins. I look forward to the LTTP threads where people wonder why nobody told them about this game before.
One good sign for this game is contrary to a lot of SE releases this one hasn't dropped price too bad for now !

OP, have you explored Terra Incognita yet? It's available after you finish the first chapter, and some of the mechanics (like inventory size and base area) are improved.
I tried Terra Incognita but I don't like it, as I mainly enjoy DQB for its story and its quests

So, what kind of improvements should SE implent for the hopefully already planned sequel ? Personally :

- More user-friendly interface and choices
- Revamped battle system
- Separate items and battle items so that they act as equipment
- Use of the DS4 touchpad for fast selecting of the items
- More room for town building
- Allowing some kind of creativity and tweakings to the premade plans (type of blocks, etc).
- More secrets to explore, exploring caves and discovering NPCs or chests was pretty awesome
