LTTP: Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen - I'm Dragon myself to the Sequel

This is a game I've seen, heard good things about but never got around to play, 2012 was such a weird year for me and I missed a lot of games (Skyrim and Mass Effect 3 being the biggest ones I just didn't play til later). With its sequel out in a few months and having nothing new to play until Like a Dragon, PErsona 3 and FF7 Rebirth in Feb, what better time than to check this out

First thoughts:

It's definitely a game from 2012, if not feeling a bit older, a few hours in now and I get the gist of it, I like the party/Pawns idea and tried to not go for any OP looking ones for a first time unless I'm struggling

Here's my issue though, its kinda boring, I think back to this kind of game from 2012 and can't help but think of Dark Souls and if I'm honest I feel like for Dark Fantasy I'd rather replay that in my head, I will give this a bit longer, but I feel like skipping it for the sequel in March, am I missing this as a "Must Play"game though

Main appeal in the game is advancing through the classes.

Advanced magic in particular stands out even today for being very physical and impressive. Fire isn't just a light show. Enemies slowly become more and more engulfed in flame in a way that feels a bit more real. Tornados. Meteors.

Strider is great and advanced archery gets much better. Great arrow blasts with multiple arrows feel like a shotgun blast.

Melee is competent. Not quite as good as Monster Hunter but good.

Monsters stand out, especially for the time. Compare a dragon fight in Skyrim to a red drake fight in DD.

Late game Dark Arisen expansion introduces many monsters.

Story was never good bit the game does have an extremely surprising ending.

The game is like a 3D Golden Axe. The fun is just getting in fights and enjoying the combat. The main thing people emphasized at the time was how much potential was there if the game was more financially successful. On their first try for an open world, they already got many things down better than the competition - mainly combat. Story, quest design and level design were adequate but not great.

Sequel so far looks like more of the same. The must see stuff looks like combat and unlocking all the advanced classes.

I made the mistake of buying Dark Arisen hyped as fuck to hear "Into Dangan" at that title screen...

Returned it shortly after.

I swear the sequel better have B'z doing SOME kind of track or else it wont be Dragons Dogma.

It's not a game that clicks right away. Once it does however, it's a masterpiece. Imo much better than any Souls game.
It can get a bit tedious at times though.

I said it back in 2012, but DD is the definition of a 'diamond in the rough'. It has many, many flaws... but it's still one of my favorite games of all time. Probably in my Top 15, maybe even Top 10.

Can't wait for 2.

This post is spot on.

I think I might go check on my pawn…

Just started this up myself the other day. Enjoying it so far except I can't seem to get any rabbits to spawn for the quest outside the starting town.

The rabbits should be outside cassardis, and the forest you reach by taking the left path instead of going straight to the encampment; the left path could be dangerous though depending on your level.

Don't focus too much on notice board quests and let them ping later on. Besides escorts quests, they'll complete eventually just by playing the game. The end game stuff is where the action and vocation builds absolutely shine like Orion's Belt. Take your time, but don't take your time. lol Get to Gran Soren first then start to soak in the world from there.

Yeah I wound up stumbling upon this and got it cleared put. Thanks!

I read that side quests can disappear if you don't complete them quickly so I am trying to complete all the side ones that I can before progressing the main plot.

I'm around level 12 and just now doing the Off With Their Heads main quest to get to Gran Soren.

He's right though. Don't worry about losing the "kill X amount" quests. You'll finish those by playing the game normally. Actual side quests are the ones you get from NPCs. Don't advance the main quest without completing those first.

If you don't mind light spoilers you can use this guide to not miss/fail quests.

Sweet, I haven't missed anything yet.

Awesome. I appreciate the insight!
