and Media Create?

I don't have that information readily available. I'm guessing you were originally referring to Media-Create, which is why I added the Famitsu data to the conversation.

Tales of the Abyss (BEST) is still hanging around, and Yuusha no Kuse ni Namaikida or 2 brought the (BEST) version of 1 back a little. :)

Go Fire Emblem? It should be about 250K by now, which is almost to the sales of the second GBA game (first released in U.S.) and higher than Sacred Stones.

No 360 games in the Top 50, so let's check used sales.

What's the pricing on these bundles? I take it Ace Combat 6+Beautiful Katamri is a free pack-in? Is the Lost Remnant bundle cheaper than buying system and game separately?

Upcoming action in the ongoing PS3/360 struggle (not listed multi-platform software that comes out at the same time, except GTAIV because of the comp.):

October 30
PS3 bundles: 80gb hdd + GT5P v3, 80gb hdd + LBP
PS3 s/w: LBP, SOCOM
GTAIV: prize campaign for 360 version, nothing for ps3 version

November 6
360 bundle: 60gb hdd + Ace Combat 6 + Katamari

November 13
PS3 s/w: Shinobido 3, Resistance 2, Derbytime Online

November 20
360 bundle: 60gb hdd + Last Remnant, faceplate etc
360 s/w: Otomedius G, Last Remnant
PS3 s/w: MotorStorm 2

November 27
360 s/w: Far Cry 2 (PS3 version in Dec.), Agarest Senki

December 4
360 s/w: Fallout 3 (PS3 version in 2009)
PS3 s/w: Pro Baseball Spirits 5 Complete Version

December 11
360 s/w: Banjo + Kazooie
PS3 s/w: Wall-E

December 18
360 s/w: Fable II, Prince of Persia

December 25
360 s/w: Dodonpachi Daioujou
PS3 s/w: White Knight Chronicles, Far Cry 2, Bioshock

Interesting. I wonder how BK and Fable 2 will do in the land of the rising sun. Also is Prince of Persia a timed 360 exclusive?

Based on the latest Famitsu hardware data...

PSP comparisons: After 201 weeks, PSP is where PS2 was at 148.6 weeks (January 2, 2003), where DS was at 89.8 weeks (August 18, 2006), and where GBA was at 127.7 weeks (August 29, 2003).

X360 comparisons: After 149 weeks, X360 is where GCN was at 14.8 weeks (December 21, 2001), where PS3 was at 17.3 weeks (March 6, 2007), and where Wii was at 3.9 weeks (December 22, 2006).

PS3 comparisons: After 101 weeks, PS3 is where PS2 was at 22.0 weeks (July 29, 2000), where PSP was at 53.6 weeks (December 15, 2005), where GCN was at 102.5 weeks (August 27, 2003), and where Wii was at 24.0 weeks (May 13, 2007).

I'm not sure of the exact date the new PS3 bundle hits, but it looks like there's a real chance for GCN to pass PS3 one last time at 103 weeks apiece before PS3 bumps up again for the holidays and GCN moves onto its shittier post-2003 performance.
PS3+in+terms+of+GCN

Wii comparisons: After 98 weeks, Wii is where GBA was at 90.2 weeks (December 9, 2002), where DS was at 70.5 weeks (April 5, 2006), where PS2 was at 98.8 weeks (January 18, 2002), and where PSP was at 154.5 weeks (November 21, 2007).

Similarly, it looks like Wii and PS2 will cross paths at 99 or 100 weeks apiece, though with PS2 exiting its holiday season and Wii entering it that one won't last much longer than GCN > PS3.

Wii+in+terms+of+PS2

On a longer-looking historical note, though after DS's recent few massive years none of the hardware numbers this year look quite as impressive, things seem more impressive if we compare to what was considered massive success before DS. Though none of this year's systems are doing as well as PS2 in its best calendar year, that there are three doing at least 75% as well is notable.
2007-12-31

Based on the lates Media Create hardware numbers...

DS vs PSP: Weekly shares of 15.7 / 84.3, PSP's highest share since... the week DS wasn't out yet. This brings total shares to 69.1 / 30.9. At this week's rates PSP catches up to DS in 100.4 weeks (September 22, 2010). If DS stopped selling and PSP continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 81.6 weeks (May 14, 2010).

X360 vs PS3: Weekly shares of 62.4 / 37.6 bring total shares to 23.5 / 76.5. At this week's rates X360 catches up to PS3 in 517.9 weeks (September 23, 2018). If PS3 stopped selling and X360 continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 206.4 weeks (October 3, 2012).

PS3 vs Wii: Weekly shares of 15.4 / 84.6 bring total shares to 25.4 / 74.6. If Wii stopped selling and PS3 continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 960.6 weeks (March 19, 2027).

Week over week, the system with the new SKU is way up (PSP), the systems awaiting new SKUs are down (DS, PS3), and everything else is slightly up.

If your definition of notable is that it makes the Top 500, then yeah. :p
I guess by definition that they bother to note a game in a list makes it notable. :) But with a low point of usually around 15K, we can usually be pretty sure whether a game hit various arbitrary milestones before falling to oblivion. Well, except for some poor late-in-year games that probably get stuck doing 13K in each year.

2005 - 15K
2006 - 17K
2007 - 19K
2008 - (down software year overall, but more active systems with games released)

There is also benefit in seeing how games perform over the year instead of simply an end of year number. The fact that DMC3:SE (BEST) saw a bump with DMC4's release is interesting to me, but could only be supposed with simply an end of year number.

Just saying. :p

Wow, things aren't looking good for PS3 for the remainder of the year, given that 360 still has The Last Remnant to keep sales up.

Who'da thought the PSP would turn out to be Sony's saviour...

Edit:
Media-Create blurb is very interesting this week. PSP software sales declined with the release of the PSP-3000.

PSP's new model, PSP-3000, released on October 16. It improves the quality and standard features, such as the microphone. In four days of release, the sales of the PSP-3000 value pack were 146K. The previous model, PSP-2000, sold 266K in its first week (a Crisis Core bundled version released ahead of it, so the total was 343K), so the PSP-3000 has a comparatively slow start. The PSP-1000's thin and lighter successor PSP-2000 was matched with a big software release, so users purchased more software (?). Conversely, PSP software sales in the top 100 decreased from 137K last week to 120K this week, which is inversely proportional to the increase in hardware. Therefore, probably a high percentage of PSP-3000 buyers are getting it as a replacement system.

In the software market, total sales of the Top 100 titles were 696,300, 121.24% of the previous week, and 70.47% of the weekly average. The eight new titles sold 38.28% of the total sales. Wii Music sold 92K. Using various instruments to feel free to enjoy soft music playing, it's provocative to see if actually playing the title will increase the willingness of customers to buy it. Will this change how non-core games are marketed in the future (?) ? Wii Music's performance is built on the recent popular music titles such as Rhythm Tengoku Gold which passed 1 million this week.

Famitsu Software Stuff
Quite a few games popped back up on the top 30 this week having been gone for two weeks. Always noticeable on my end because it's not so easy to identify them based on what the list gives as their previous rank! Monster Hunter Portable 2G, New Super Mario Bros., Wii Play, Animal Crossing Wild World, and the first Taiko no Tatsujin DS.

It's doubtful that MS will ever hit second place in Japan, but you know MS is looking at these numbers and thinking "We've outsold Sony for over a month?!"

If I wasn't looking at the numbers... I'd think you were batshit insane.

Good for PSP!

Bad for PS3.

Sony should be happy though, every PS3 is sold at a loss, every PSP has to be sold for a gain with all these revisions sans price drops.

You must install a Adobe Plugin (Japanese Fonts), I had the same problem. :)

But... this is the year of the PS3!
Out of curiousity, what is actually the definition of "year of the PS3" (if there is a definition for it)? I've been wondering about this lately. I asked in the September NPD thread as well, but i dont recall seeing any answers.

Is the year of the PS3 about the games that comes out in 2008, is it about increasing in sales compared to the sales in 2007, is it about Sony making profit on the PS3, or is it about all of these things combined? Are these things suppose to happend in a specific territory, worldwide in general or is it about the total picture (like for example if sales goes up in one territory, but down in another, it can still be a increase looking at the total picture)?

Nintendo....?

:)
There was practically no competition for the Game Boy by the N64 days!

The PSP, while respectable in previous years, was nowhere near the DS juggernaut and looked like it had settled for eternal second place until the past year.

Not to mention Nintendo made sure they made profit out of all their consoles, even during the rough times.

I think it's supposed to be when they have a line-up of hit exclusive games that would entice people to BUY BUY BUY, thereby outselling for 360 for that year in at least 2 of the 3 major gaming regions.

Hmm. Are those "Top X" values, or supposed to be total? I haven't hashed it all out, but I can see some areas where it and Famitsu's software pie differ on which system was selling more software.

Ah ok, thanks for the answer :) Ye, that might be what they mean with "the year of the PS3" indeed :)

Have it happend yet though? I know the PS3 sales in the US has increased compared to how it was in 2007, and the PS3 did outsell the Xbox 360 for some months in the US, but i'm not sure if that was because of many exclusive games. Metal Gear Solid 4 game seemed to give an PS3 hardware bump though :) But i think both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 has sold about as much this year so far. With the recent Xbox 360 pricedrop i guess Xbox 360 will end up selling the most consoles in 2008 between the Xbox 360 and the PS3.

I dont know how the situation is in Europe in general. The UK installbase of Xbox 360 is about 1 million larger than the PS3 installbase if i'm not mistaken, but unfortunately i dont know too much about the rest of Europe.

I guess there isnt much to say about the Xbox 360 and the PS3 preformace in Japan, other than both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 isnt selling too much, and that Xbox 360 has outsold the PS3 for about 6 weeks in a row now :) There has been some hardware spikes due to some game releases though, like Metal Gear Solid 4, but it didnt have too much staying power when it comes to the hardware sales :\

Because it's a western game. Doesn't matter if it's published by Sony, they can smell the foreignness.

Oh and well it's a PS3 game too, you know...

In Sony's defense, they have the best track record on successful Western releases in Japan. In the PS1 era, they were practically the only publisher willing to give a good Japanese localization. Let's not even go into the whole Ratchet makeover.

Of course, LBP has the aforementioned factors such as the lack of a popular brandname and it being a 2D platformer.

Anyway, it's crazy how the DS software sales are more than the rest of the system software sales combined.

Are you guys with the 64 picture quoting it because you don't know how much it sold?

I think we need to redefine the word 'savior' in more specific language of "good for gamers" vs. "good for profits."

2008 being the year of the PS3 meant that this would be the year that PS3 came into its own. It would set up its place as the dominant platform (at least over 360 and possibly Wii), games would start being developed first on the PS3 ("Burnout Paradise is just the beginning!"), the industry would return to Sony, and all would be set right with the gaming world. This would be aided by "Microsoft spent itself in 2007 and has nothing left for 2008" and "2008 is the year so many anticipated PS3 games will come out and set the world ablaze." Gran Turismo 5 Prologue ("It's Gran Turismo! Everyone buys that!"), Metal Gear Solid 4 ("It's Metal Gear Solid! My eyes!"), and possibly Final Fantasy XIII ("It's Final Fantasy! Exclusive!"). There was also Home ("Eat it Xbox Live!") and Little Big Planet ("I'd buy a PS3 just for this one game!").

Everything was supposed to be going right for the PS3, and 2007 would be just a bad memory.
