Did they even release any "major" titles for the Wii/DS this year? I guess they released what, two DBZ games, but c'mon.

Notes:
- HD is PS3 + 360 (+ PS2 in the case of DW6).
- I made up "Koei's expectation".

I'm in no way denying that the sales of SW3 are left to be desired, but it's no surprise either that once again only the Wii game failing is named as the cause for craptacular financial results.

It's just too easy to predict this kind of stuff.

Road, if you replaced stupid Wii userbase with the PS2 Monster Hunters, but kept the same name, you'd be my new best friend
while still accurately portraying some of the sentiment found in these threads.

Re: SW3. It will top out at 300K or so..I really don't know what Koei was reasonably expecting from this- 400K? A minimal decline from SW2 even though Dynasty Warriors has declined significantly? I dunno...it seems to me SW3 declined proportionately pretty even with the DW6 decline.

Not saying the sales are OMG AWESOME because they aren't..but I honestly don't think it would have done significantly better anywhere else, at least not so much better as to raise Koei's financial results all by itself.

If we look at the development of the Musou series chronologically, ignoring the tie-up titles, then we get something akin to this:

rmo609.png

I don't think the move to Wii helped the series. The series is, for the most part, on a steady decline entry to entry. Koei seemed to reverse the declining trend with Musou Orochi, but that quickly faded away again. If anything, the move to Wii definitely alienated the already-diminished audience on PS2/PS3. Samurai Warriors 3 being above Musou Orochi Z is because the latter is essentially a remake compilation pack of the prior PS2 titles.

What do the colors mean?
Probably blue is PS2 / Wii, while PS3 is red, and X360 is green.

As one of the owner of DW3, DW4, DW4 Empire, DW5 etc, I started to get tired / bored with the series around DW5. I am not interested to check out these kind of game since I am tired of it (it applied even to other series, like Sengoku Musou, Sengoku Basara etc).

I think there are two separate issues at work here:

The first is that Koei's expectations weren't met. This comes straight from their mouths, so we'll have to hold it as being true.

The second is whether or not they were stupid to have those expectations for what is so obviously a declining franchise anyway.

You'd think people would get quite tired of Koei's Tony Hawk style expansion iteration routine, particularly since it's gotten somewhat predictable.

Maybe Tecmo'll save them!

Well, that's kind of the interesting point here. What were Tecmo-Koei's expectations for SM3?

They're clearly not satisfied with the performance of the title, but by how much did it fall short of their expectations - and indeed, were their expectations reasonable or LOL-worthy (the Hokuto Musou expectations posted earlier seem to be remarkably... optimistic, for example).

Koei Tecmo sees share prices drop after posting losses. Blames poor sales on Sengoku Musou 3 on the Wii, a tougher online game market, and delays on overseas releases.

So I guess it's official now, the sales are a disappointment to Koei and we can stop speculating if they might have been happy - they're not.
Koei Tecmo: "It's easy to blame ourselves, but it's even easier to blame the Wii!"

They are just plain stupid. They expected to sell a million copy of Gundam Musou too.

People are just sick of Musou games since they really haven't evolved at all.

because the wii is a fantastic third party paradise!
It'd be best if you didn't start yourself out in this way young one. Everyone knows the Wii is fucked. And no one is saying that. They are saying you can't blame the Wii for a series that's already in decline, not that the Wii marketplace is a paradise.

I think everyone is pretty sure that SW3 will get a port eventually. There was no Musou userbase on the Wii and the series is in decline, so Tecmoei need to hedge all their bets. Unless Nintendo stitched up a really tight exclusivity contract, then that would just be hilarious.

About MHP3, I really do think it we'll get a PSP announcement at TGS this year or something. Also, MH3G for Wii will probably be announced at about the same time. If MHP3is being pushed back as some kind of handheld launch title, then it'll be multi-plat.

And Koei will publish Hokuto Musou expecting 1 million sales, so?

well when they publish hokuto musou expecting 1 million sales and it massively misses the mark and they seem flummoxed about this, it'll make sense to use that an example of how they don't have realistic expectations...

i'm just saying that you can't make a call about koei's expectations for samurai warriors 3 based on namco's expectations for gundam musou.

The source is some japanese blog which I don't know and they have been posted on
the VGLOL message board
.
Usually they don't report japanese numbers if not accurate although we should account these numbers as a preliminary leak I suppose.

Better than nothing until MC tomorrow XD

A quick glance at least week's prediction shows I severely overestimated EoE for both platforms, moderately underestimated AT3, and underestimated DQ VI by a good 100k assuming those numbers are legit.
