But superior hardware has never been the most important thing. Look at PS1 and PS2...
Ask Sega if the PS2's superior hardware wasn't important.

Yup, no-one did servers before MS.
Its truly revolutio........
Oh wait.
What does it do different, people are getting suckered with this Hdmi pass through.Depends on what you're looking for. If you just want slightly shinier graphics, sure. If you're also looking for strong media functionality then a case can be made for the Xbox.
Microsoft's dedicated servers will win over a lot of people. This seems like one of the console's biggest strengths.
What's the point with all the capitalization? Here's an interesting article from Betanews, the author explains why he believes that XBO will be the winner in the next generation battle:

Adjusted slightly for accuracy, but your original point still stands.but inferior hardware specs + $100 Kinect premium can lose a console war.
And launched 18 months afterwards. Crack open a history book, or the Wikipedias interwebs page.Gamecube was cheap as shit and had better hardware than PS2...
The way things stand now, both consoles will probably end up around 90 to 100 million. Current gen they both fell shy of 75, and that's with the Wii selling 100 mil. Now that the Wii U is tanking, it's fair to say the other two consoles will eat away at Nintendo's current Wii market.

3. Toppling the Leading Incumbent is Easier Said than Done - How will a third place brand like Xbox compete, then?

putting its money on a holistic approach to winning the hearts and minds of gamers and media consumers alike
It wasn't with Genesis/SNES...
I think dreamcast was an exception. But that's my point of view
Usually this is because the strongest is ALSO the most expensive, and while being cheapest doesn't mean you win (Dreamcast or GameCube anyone?) being more expensive AND weaker certainly doesn't do the console any favors. And usually it's either down to novelty (Wii) or whoever gets a good, strong library of games quickest (PS1, PS2, 360), though admittedly this means with both starting at the same time they'd probably be roughly even there. I'd imagine that means a slight nod to Sony.4. Hardware Specs Alone Won't Win a Console War
True, to an extent. If one of them screws up badly enough people will bail, and that was absolutely happening around E3 with Microsoft. They may've fixed quite a few of the problems, but not ALL of them, certainly not that price point, Americans aren't exactly the most loyal consumers on average, and Microsoft STILL hasn't successfully thrown over Nintendo like Sony did with Nintendo. Seems Sony's in a solid position to take it back.3. Toppling the Leading Incumbent is Easier Said than Done
This seems true enough for the most part, but Sony DOES look to make big jumps with the PS4, and while charging now hurts it does help many are already invested just due to the free games, and so long as that continues they'll stay invested. Granted, where all your friends are IS a huge factor, but it seems many 360 guys are willing to jump to PS4, and after party chat it seemed Microsoft was content just to keep get streaming apps on while doing little gaming-wise, and while that IS nice to have more of there's many other devices with them, and without a secondary subscription to use. Which goes to...2. Microsoft's Online Gaming Backbone Puts Sony (and Nintendo) to Shame
... This is an area where Sony leads for Netflix, and if MS still demands a fee for using them I DO think things will just flip to Sony with ease, especially since they're already leading on Netflix and look ready to get many services up on it. Granted Microsoft has that cable box connectivity thing, but it remains to be seen if that's even something people really went versus the meat and potatoes blu-ray/streaming services. Especially with more people cable cutting.1. Modern Consoles Are Entertainment Hubs -- And the Numbers Prove It
My take on why the PS4 will "win" (whatever that means)
1. Better Price
2. Better Hardware (see No.1)
3. Better 1st Party Games/Studios
4. Better reputation at the moment
5. Better jap. support
6. PlayStation brand stronger (world-wide)

N64 had superior hardware than PSone too...The PSone had superior hardware to the Saturn, at least on the 3D side, and dominated it.
That's so true it hurts. Poor SEGAAnd Sony basically managed to kill the Dreamcast's hype purely on positioning it as being a generation behind the PS2's tech even though it really wasn't.
My PS3 is more of an entertainment hub than the Xbone or 360 ever could be. Sony's support for DLNA is next to none.1. Modern Consoles Are Entertainment Hubs -- And the Numbers Prove It
The four reasons:
4. Hardware Specs Alone Won't Win a Console War But Price point will, so edge to the PS4 and WiiU
3. Toppling the Leading Incumbent is Easier Said than Done It's happened twice in the last three gens and MS has not been involved in any off the topplings
2. Microsoft's Online Gaming Backbone Puts Sony (and Nintendo) to Shame What about it's online backbone shames Sony? Party Chat? Exclusives that don't use dedicated servers?
1. Modern Consoles Are Entertainment Hubs -- And the Numbers Prove It The whole family enjoys Netflix, the gamer buys the console.
But MS isn't the leading incumbent.
Or those people bought kinect and didn't use it, see new one comes with that dust collector again and coats more as a reason and chooses the cheaper ps4. I know people who like wii sports bought kinect never played past the fad and its left a bad taste in the mouths, I think it's hurt wii u as people thought well I never played the last one its a waste of money.I feel like presentation goes a long way. Average consumers wont know which console is more powerful, but if they come into a store and see MS' ui with kinect interface then that might make them 'think' the XO is more advanced than the PS4. They might look at the PS4 and think 'Yeah its $100 cheaper but the camera is $60 and isnt as good.'
N64 had superior hardware than PSone too...
Reading the article he only seems to care about the US. The rest of the world is irrelevant to him. So he's basing that entire point of the article around the 360 outselling the other consoles in the US in recent years. That just shows you how much of a mess his points are.
MS came last this gen mate, their world wide sales are behind both Nintendo and Sony. The leading incumbent is Nintendo and now looks what happens to the Wii U. And all the other points are just plain stupid so I won't bother to comment on it.Here's an interesting article from Betanews, the author explains why he believes that XBO will be the winner in the next generation battle:

6. RAM
What the what. Xbone is so concerted on a single area it's full name is secretly Xbox One Nation Under God.Microsoft's vision for the next gen console war isn't concerted on a single area
Did it? pretty sure N64 couldnt handle Gran Turismo..N64 had superior hardware than PSone too...
Microsoft's dedicated servers will win over a lot of people. This seems like one of the console's biggest strengths.
For the best multiplayer experience, buy an Xbox One. If you want the best graphics (for a console), buy a PS4.

Yeah, most prior generations weren't as clearcut as the next one looks to be. I think stuff like the Master System and Neo Geo were above and beyond the others, but both were niches and in the case of Neo Geo the price angle completely murdered it, whereas SNES/Genesis and N64/Saturn/PS1 each had their own quirks even if one had more strong points than weak points like SNES or N64 (though for N64 it's one hell of a crippling weak point), even with the PS2/Xbox the PS2 had some very specific quirks (and I wonder if the Xbox was REALLY that practical design-wise for a pure gaming system) while the GC was sort of in between.Depends. It used cartridges, which means the sound quality was significantly worse and games often lacked content and graphical enhancements because they didn't have as much space as a CD.
The actual processing power and stuff was limited by the fact that they still used carts.
A cursory view of the articles previously posted by the same author will easily explain all that Microsoft cheerleading.
