A British-Iranian charity worker serving five years in a Tehran jail could end up with another 16 years added to her sentence.

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe's family said they were "bewildered" that authorities had opened a new case against her just a month before she is eligible for early release.

The 38-year-old was arrested at Tehran airport in April 2016 as she was about to fly home with her two-year-old daughter Gabriella after a family visit.

The country's Revolutionary Guard claimed she was plotting to overthrow the regime, an allegation Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe denies.

They tried to get her to confess that she trained and recruited spies, her family said.

The latest charges claim the Thomson Reuters Foundation worker joined organisations working to topple the Iranian system, and that she once protested outside the London embassy.

Husband Richard Ratcliffe said the Revolutionary Guard was "inventing new charges to prevent her early release".

Nazanin’s MP Tulip Siddiq said the latest charges are ‘an outrage’ and must not be allowed to stand, adding: ‘These developments are particularly cruel at a time when her family had increasingly hoped that she would be granted temporary release. ‘With the possibility of 16 years being added to her sentence, it is high time the Government intervened with tangible effect.’ Ms Siddiq said the Foreign Secretary must formally and unreservedly call for the release of Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe. The campaign is holding an event with Amnesty at Parliament Square on Wednesday morning, and there will be a showing of the play Looking for Mummy on Tuesday evening at Reuters in Canary Wharf.

Just caught this on the news. Seems like someone else with a British passport who should not be in jail.
