Why do American game developers seem so stuck in a rut with their game designs this generation, with the 'norm' being sequel after sequel of derivative gameplay?

and along the same lines:

Do you think the need for a franchise is ruining what used to be a very creative and original medium?

Don't you want to punch all these morons who think an open-ended finale can only be construed as absolute intention to make a sequel right in their stupid faces?

What is the next evolution in point and click adventure games? Is their even a way to evolve the point and click genre to make it more appealing to the mainstream?

If their is any game franchise you could work on what would it be?
