Nintendo bets on South Africa with cheaper 2DS launch

The Nintendo 2DS has hit South African shores at about R200 less than it did Europe's, mainly because Nintendo sees South Africa as a major potential growth market.

The launch gaming system began with a presentation from PriceWaterhouseCoopers on how they see the console gaming industry going in the coming years.

To put it bluntly, they figure that with South Africa's growing black middle class who want to get the best toys for their kids, and how long it will take our Internet connections to become any good, consoles can do good business out here even if they are static in the first world.

Nintendo has had a focus on being a family system right since the days of their first system the NES, also known as the Famicom. The 2DS carries on that focus, which is a good thing.

The 2DS loses out a bit on portability thanks to the fact that it doesn't fold, it is basically a sold wedge, but it is much cheaper and is built to be fairly durable.

The product is aimed at children while still providing all the power of a normal 3DS, it just doesn't do the 3D bit.

Teachers will probably hate this thing, and it is still portable enough for it to get stolen, so I would recommend not sending your kid to school with it.

I was just going to post in that Nintendo Brazil thread that they should launch their handhelds there as a cheaper gaming device.
