North Korea could co-host 2018 Winter Olympics, Seoul suggests

South Korea has proposed that North Korea host some of the skiing events at next year’s Winter Olympics, in a move it hopes will ease cross-border political tensions.

The South Korean sports minister, Do Jong-hwan, has also suggested forming an inter-Korean women’s ice hockey team to compete at the Games, which open in February in the South Korean town of Pyeongchang.

Do cited North Korea’s “top-class” Masikryong ski resort as a potential venue and said he would discuss co-hosting with Jang Woong, North Korea’s delegate to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), according to South Korean media.

His overture reflects a desire by South Korea’s new president, Moon Jae-in, for cautious engagement with Pyongyang, despite anger over the its recent missile launches and the death this week of the US university student Otto Warmbier after nearly 17 months in a North Korean prison.

Moon suggested earlier this month that the two countries lead a north-east Asian bid to host the 2030 World Cup.

North Korean involvement in the tournament would require huge investment in infrastructure, but Moon said: “If the neighbouring countries in north-east Asia, including North and South Korea, can host the World Cup together, it would help to create peace.”

Do will raise the idea of moving some of the skiing events north of the border when he meets the International Olympic Committee president, Thomas Bach, later this month, South Korean media said.

The best thing that can happen to North Korea would be a massive exposure from South Korea.
I think they would think twice about socialism after been exposed to K-POP.

They better clean of their stuff good afterwards tho.
You don't want steal some of that precious north korean snow and deal with the consequences.

The North knows all about South Korea these days. They have smuggled VHS tapes of dramas, etc.

But it's not like they actually have any political choice. Like Kpop all they want: if individuals try and change the govt it will ruin their life.

I'll take relief of tensions over anything else, but that's because I live here

North Korea is evil, no doubt, but I'd rather not be dragged into a war as a meatshield

Fuck North Korea. And, more than anything else, fuck this kind of phony olive branch.

Innocents get brutalized by a regime that suffers no substantial consequences for its sins. Least we can do is to stop pretending like they're our friends.

That's way to short notice isn't it? On the other hand I doubt the IOC would protest. They love those symbolic gestures.

I remember at the Sydney Olympics when the Korean Delegations came to the opening ceremony as a united Delegation. I thought we were finally on a good way to peace....

The Olympics is an international event and you cannot ask athletes and officials from all over the world to go to North Korea in order to compete when every other Government strongly warns or forbids their citizens from travel there. For very good reasons as highlighted by the recent straight up brutal murder of a US tourist.

Nah these totalitarian regimes have a talent for hiding their demons and putting on a good act for the world during events like these. Typically for as much as they can give a shit about their own people, they are desperate for validation from the wider world.

whelp, this is what happens when you get the Moon in the office due to Park being removed.

Alot of the Moon's agendas are great, but he is way to soft when it comes to NK.

They had a spine when Park was in office. She had a very rigid and defiant stance against NK. The problem is, she done fucked up with other shit.
