OG Xbox Appreciation and Lack of Emulation Thread of the big black box of doom

Storm Riders has nothing to do with Ninja Gaiden, Im not entirely sure who is spreading that wrong information. Storm Riders was built really, really late in the Xbox's life, July 22 2005, NG started life in like 1999 before being announced at e3 2002 and released in March 2004.

I think we've discussed this but I've just rewatched the video today and I'm back on my "NG uses lots of stuff from the Storm Riders demo" kick. But if it did get built afterwards, then I guess it's the other way around. I don't know how they're related but I just assumed Storm Riders came first since it looks like a very rudimentary NG. If I've caused some misinfo to go around then that's my bad. All I know is they *have* to be related somehow.

There are way too many similarities to ignore. Will gladly go through and dissect it and provide video of NG for comparison! But for starters, the wall run animations, the "Interact" notification on the bottom right, the pot he breaks at the beginning of the vid. Lots of environmental similarities. After he opens a door and rolls through it, the animation is basically 1:1 with NG. There's a very strong argument to be made.

Wasn't there some question as to which dev Storm Riders came from? Cause it's gotta be Tecmo or someone associated, I guess.

Edit: guess the other explanation would be that someone ripped off NG wholesale, but that seems far fetched. Or maybe it's not, i don't know.

Think that requires a RAM upgrade. Wasn't able to play it on a (modded) stock Xbox.

yeah. same if you want to emulate (run natively?) Chihiro stuff.

I havent found any evidence other than one comment that seemed to think it came from a Tecmo Xbox. Ive dug through the XBE some more and didnt find anything. It was compiled from a folder called Phoenix, which I thought might be related to Iron Phoenix, but beyond that I havent seen the evidence to link it.

Borrowing assets isn't all that unusual in the dev world.

And actually, if you look up Storm Riders Online, which was to be an MMO, it was made by a studio called Phoenix Games Studio, which with the compile info points to it being from them, which is a studio in Malaysia. This also links back to the fact that the Xbox it was found on was 220v, which wouldnt be the case for a Japanese box, but does match for Malaysia. So that is much more likely :)

Edit:
For a good example of dev borrowing, check out this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sh9RFRXCRck

One look, and you would say World of Warcraft on the 360. But it's not even close, although I havent gotten to revealing what it is exactly :D

Yeah, put that way, it sounds a lot more plausible than it being a Tecmo project, actually. On top of it all, it just doesn't seem like a project they'd pick up, to put it lightly. Definitely not Team Ninja since they were probably full swing with DOA4 at that time and they were pretty upfront about talking about future projects (and this game would make zero sense for them to be working on.) Could Phoenix pull stuff from the NG disc files via a modded xbox or something?

Forgive the hype, full blown ng fanboy here, so stumbling on that vid just while casually browsing beta xbox stuff earlier this year nearly gave me a heart attack.

And damn @ that WoW stuff...can't wait to find out what it is :) Love the work you do!

Well fuck. Was all excited to finally upgrade my OG Xbox to a bigger hard drive, but I screwed it up. I got an error code upon boot up after doing the hard drive cloning and locking, and after hastily trying to troubleshoot the issue, I'm now stuck with the Xbox not even recognizing the original hard drive, giving me error codes no matter what drive or configuration I use to boot it up with. This is honestly the first time I've had some sort of modification for a console back fire on me (admittedly more complex than a case mod for PS2), and it's leaving me pretty bummed out that I won't be able to continue to play any of the games I've been collecting for this system.

Even worse is that I just got Otogi the same day that I got the hard drive. Some way to end 2015, huh?

Bummer dude. I love my Xbox at this point, don't know what I'd do without it.

Did you back up the EEPROM?

Did you back up the EEPROM?
Dammit, I didn't. I kept meaning to, but I never made a back up..

I don't want to go out and buy a replacement just yet, not after all the money I spent on stuff to softmod the thing, but looking at things online I'm not feeling up to going down whatever holes I need to just to find the solution.

You can use a modchip, that will do the trick.

Hmm, maybe. Though I don't trust myself with soldering, especially in this small ass studio apartment of mine.

Either way, I'm gonna have to hold off on Xbox stuff for a while anyway, until I earn some more money and then decide on what I'm going to do to fix this.

Well, I solved my Xbox issue by simply going to Seattle and buying a replacement for like 35 bucks. Good news of course being I could finally get to playing the Otogi games I had purchased prior to the botched hard drive upgrade.

Bad news is that this model I got has a Thompson drive. Had no issues with it getting stuck yet, but it already takes like 3 seconds longer for the damn drive to open up. However since I'm still holding onto the old box, I'm thinking of whether it'd be possible to just swap the dvd drives since that one had a Philips drive (at least I think I did). Can't imagine it'd be as involved as the hard drive upgrade since those are locked to the specific units they come in. And by extension, not as easy for me to fuck up majorly

Either way, I've got a working Xbox again, extra composite and power cables, and a Duke controller after this purchase. Thinks are normal again.

Swapping the DVD drives is far easier than putting a new hard drive in since the DVD drive isn't tied to the system.

I recently swapped a Thomson out with a Samsung.

Yeah, that's what I figured was the case. Looks like I'll get on that very soon, and also remove the clock capacitor while I'm at it. But for now, I'm just making up for lost time on games I had been unable to play and enjoying it immensely.

Otogi 2 is fucking glorious. I was kind of let down after getting through the first one considering how much I heard about this series being talked about, but the sequel got me back in with all the gameplay improvements.

Man, hooked this beast back up to the TV yesterday and played some Call of Duty: Finest Hour. It was odd going back to that Xbox Controller, my right thumb kept trying to find the start button. My index fingers were searching for those shoulder buttons, how things change over the years.

Call of Duty was OK, if a little dark and muddy testing my old man eyes.

It took a semi-pricey adapter and quite a bit of configuring but I've finally got my Gamecube controller working perfectly with the OG Xbox now. Feels amazing to play Metal Wolf Chaos with it. :)

So I started to play my Xbox yesterday, only to find that it wouldn't power on. Buttons wouldn't activate the LED or anything, no a/v signals. After I unplugged it, any time I reattached the power cable, I noticed a really faint, high pitched noise coming from the system. So that sucks.

I have backup Xboxes, that's ok, but I'm hoping I haven't lost my Shenmue 2 save and disc. Some questions:

1. How do I get the disc out? I tried poking into the little hole on the drive with a paper clip, but to no result. Does it need power to force the eject or something? Do I need to pull it out while pushing the switch?

2. How hard is it to swap out the hard drive? I have the bit for it, but I'm feeling like it's probably not worth it. Mainly because I'd have to break the stickers on my other console. I'd only get the first half of S2 back, a Morrowind character, and saves I don't really care about.

3. Probably most important, is this a common issue? Can I take steps to prevent it happening again?

That's really cool!

to answer question 3- i think there are some that come with a particularly shit PSU. Had one die the same way last year. There was some particular PSU that kept coming up in old forum posts.

If you have a couple of Torx screwdrivers it's not that difficult, plenty of disassembly guides around. Replacing the HDD from your faulty console to the working one will not work right out of the box. The HDD is tied to your specific console unless you softmod it, probably due to EEPROM related things although not sure to be honest.

Since it seems like you have a PSU issue, you could either replace it or replace bad caps yourself (Only if you know what you are doing!) or softmod your working console and then clone you HDD with the saves to the other Xbox HDD.

So my Dad often calls me if he's in a second hand store and finds old games, and the other day he asked if Spiderman on Xbox was any good, but halfway through the conversation he's like oh wait, it's not Xbox, it's X Game... and it says.. X Boss. We start laughing at that point so I say don't buy them but take some photos for me for the lols. Here they are:

Well that's definitely good to know! I thought I'd just be able to swap n' go.

I did a little poking around and didn't have any trouble getting in. I didn't catch the inner screws at first though, so I had to give up for a bit and check out a guide. Having looked at one, I can probably go back at it tonight.

I might just try to swap out the PSU from one of my other Xboxes. Worst case I break the other one too; which is ok, since I didn't spend much on either.

Edit: I made it in there and managed to get the disc. It's pretty easy to manually eject once you have the drive popped out. Looks like it could have been done without opening, but the switch seemed larger and hard to push that I expected. PSU definitely looks like something not made for removal, so I'm probably gonna give up on that dream at least for now.

Just a reminder that if you own an Xbox, buy Otogi 1+2.

and if you don't own an Xbox, buy one, then buy Otogi 1+2.
Already own both and played to completion, overall enjoying my time with it. First game's kinda meh, missing a few game mechanics that would've made it incredibly fun. Otogi 2 is a lot more polished by comparison, but still a tad clunky compared to games with airborne movement like Another Century's Episode.

Gorgeous games though, I'll give them that.

I've been playing Otogi 2 lately. I've been stuck at that mission where you have to destroy all the eggs. I keep getting tagged by one and die immediately lol.

Never really understood what is so great about the Otogi series. Only played the second title if that matters. Graphically impressive, especially the level of destruction. Gameplay is a bit slow and directionless overall for my taste. I loved Dark Souls though, so maybe I should give Otogi another chance. Anyone care to enlighten me? :)

playing both back to back, I thought it was a bit of a wash between them, if not enjoying Otogi 1 a bit more. Otogi 2 pushes the system harder graphically but I think it has smaller FOV and worse framerate. Makes up for it with all the extra characters, though Raikoh was just fine alone in the first one, imo. Level design--I liked them a lot in both. Lots of smaller levels, a few big ones, some pretty grand boss fights, all designed around mobility.

Yeah, both have a few levels that are just tough as hell at first. I think Otogi 1's was the escort mission thing where you have to cross a huge bridge to some islands.

I just like the flow of combat a lot and the general atmosphere--everything about its presentation is awesome.

As for combat, not much beats sending an enemy bouncing around like a pinball, crashing through things and taking out other enemies. Mobility is weird at first, but fun as hell once you get used to it and levels are designed around all the dashing/double jumping you can do. Later levels can be pretty challenging and force you to think about getting through a situation optimally, particularly when there are objectives. There are some pretty crazy boss fights.

As for meta stuff, the RPG mechanics, item collecting, and addictive nature of destruction make it very replayable (and all the characters to use in 2 can make it extra replayable.)
I think both games also have unlockable extra modes+difficulties. They're very meaty games--always something new to unlock or find.

What would that even play on? Also whats with bootleg games not being able to get the ESRB font right?
