One person has been killed after a car struck a bus shelter in the southern French city of Marseille, police say.

The driver has been arrested. Police say it is not clear whether the van was driven deliberately into the shelter in the old port area or whether it was an accident.

But there are reports that another bus shelter in a different district of the city was struck earlier.

The second bus stop was struck at about 10:00 local time (08:00 GMT).

The Francetvinfo website says this incident was at Valentine in the 11th district, and the first was in the 13th district, where there were no casualties.

There have been no official statements on any motive.

No motive declared as of yet, but people are obviously on edge to stories like this.

BFMTV reported that the vehicle was a stolen Renault Espace and that the driver in custody was said to have “psychological problems”. Police advised locals and tourists to keep away from the port area.

News are all over the place. Old port is neither 11th nor 13th district. I can confirm the Valentine (11th district) one as it's right where I live.

More added to that Guardian article

Officers spotted the vehicle in the Vieux Port area of the city, where they arrested the driver, a 35-year-old man known to the police for “acts of minor delinquency”.

Julien Ravier, the mayor of the 11th and 12th arrondissement, told BFMTV that the victim was a woman in her 40s who was waiting alone at the stop.

Looks like a deranged madman, rather than a terrorist (attacking with political motive).
