Opera DS Web Browser - Kid Friendly

meh, the psp browser is pretty shitty (speed wise) so i dont have much hope for this

The PSP browser is based on Netfront, however, and also has the worst onscreen keyboard ever. The screenshots I've seen of Opera DS suggests that it'll have a proper QWERTY onscreen keyboard on the touchscreen, which should be a hell of a lot quicker to operate than the PSP's one.

Why would anyone want this thing?

curiosity is the only reason I'm getting it. I've never browsed the web on a portable device. If it's cheap I'll pick it up to see how good the tech is. If it's usable I'd browse Gaf with it while my girlfriend uses the computer I spose.

Unnecessary feature since most kids would give up after waiting five minutes for the pages to render. Seriously, the browser was almost that slow at E3. I'll be shocked if they managed to optimize it into something practical in such a short time since then. The interface is neat though!
Isn't it possible that wifi conditions in the e3 building were crazy enough that the lag wasn't the rendering, but the network transmission? Just a possibility -- I remember that folks had a fairly difficult time getting a wifi signal last year, with everything else in the building (especially Nintendo's booth) zapping frequencies and waves all over the place.

Why would anyone want this thing? Well, those of us who don't have laptops might be able to take the DS on road trips and check email in McDonald's and hotels along the way. And you can surf anywhere in the home. It is definitely useless if you have a laptop, though.
What percentage of the population has a laptop? DS systems are everywhere and relatively cheap. Isn't it possible that someone without a few thousand dollars for a laptop MIGHT be interested in checking their e-mail while traveling or out in town?

Why does Nintendo hate MAF? :p

VOOK

We don't know why he keeps buying PAL, either.
I used it at E3, it was a pretty juttery interface, dont know if the extra ram was in or not.

I interpreted this picture has 'a typical day in the OT subforum'

I'll use it to browse GAF while I'm in bed and unable to fall asleep. I also wont need to carry my heavy laptop to the bathroom when taking a dump.

anyone seen any screenshots?

There was wireless lag but also significant rendering lag. For instance, the browser would not even begin to render the page until the transmission progress bar at the bottom was completely full, and even then it took a while. And when I tapped browser buttons for internal functions, such as bringing up the keyboard or the options menu, those actions took several seconds to process as well. So the browser's problems extended far beyond slow wireless access in the Nintendo booth. I've used web browsers long enough to tell the difference, ya know. ;-) And you would agree with what I've said if you tried it yourself.

That's exactly what I said.

Well, I did try it myself -- and while it did seem slow, it seemed due to the transmission speed and not rendering. Again, that's my opinion based on a whole three minutes of testing, but it seemed like there was a lengthy delay in the time spent downloading each page. To be honest, I don't recall internal functions being delayed, although it's possible I have a faulty memory here.

That's exactly what I said.
Ah. Sorry then -- it's just that you seemed to put it forth as a negative (as in "who'd bother to get this, when folks can just use a laptop"), rather than a positive (given that most folks can't afford a laptop, I can see a use for this.") I was confused!

So to put it simply, this doesn't browse the internet. So what does it actually browse??

So to put it simply, you didn't read the thread. So what did you actually read???

If you don't want the kid friendly filter, you don't have to. If you do want it, you pay $2.70 a month to protect your kids.

That's what I get from the first post.

They need to make some kinda Nintendo DS language (DSXML maybe?):

<page>
-<styles buttons="Ocarina_of_Time01.but" background="Mario_Kart01.png" music="New_Super_Mario_Bros01.mus" />

-<img src="gamepreviews.gif" />

-<navigation>
--<button loc="MarioKart.xml">Previous Game</button>
--<button loc="AnimalCrossing.xml">Next Game</button>
-</navigation>

-<gameoptions>
--<button>View Movie</button>
--<button>Play Demo</button>
--<button>View Commentary</button>
-</gameoptions>

-<title>New Super Mario Bros.</title>
-<description>Mario and Luigi take on Bowser in this new adventure for the Nintendo DS.</description>
</page>

If it were created to look (and react) like a game (i.e., you point to menus like in a game, no hand cursor, no "links," no loading of individual elements, no scrolling, etc.), you'd never even know that the info were being streamed from the Internet.
