PS5 and Xbox largely unpopular with Gen Z in Japan, survey shows

It's not what a major Sony warrior likes to hear, no doubt about that.

Given my history of shitting on Sony, especially their recent 10 year first party trash fest, it is clear you have no idea what a "sony warrior" is.

Lets be honest here, they game on mobile and PC the most right?
But how much they actually SPEND on it?
I think we all can agree all they play are free to play, or the same 1-2 GaaS games....

You need consumers that willing to spend money on your platform, if they spend nothing, who gives a shit if 10 mil users on that platform?

The article says $70 a year. So most of these "gamers" don't spend money on games.

Dont fret so much. They are still playing console games on Nintendo Switch and PC
Exactly. Mobile and f2p are very popular in Japan, but console type games are also selling very well (both traditional experiences and less traditional ones).

So many people into "retro" gaming now. I was wondering why the xbox 360 and PS3 subreddits were blowing up on my reddit homepage the past few months, seems like people dig the simplicity of the older generations and not having monitization thrown in their faces every time you boot up a game.

Then it's the wrong generation to go back, they should be looking at the PS2/Xbox.

What is gen Z anyway. Sounds like a cloning project. I think I'm a baby boomer. Yet I hate babies..... stats and labels. What a world. Actually just checked, I'm generation X.... good, nothing to do with babies. And X is cool. Phil Spencer told me so.

Gen Z gamers spend an average of 10,446 yen on games yearly, which is under 70 dollars – the amount a single full-price console game can cost.
It must be acknowledged that games are considered a luxury in many countries, especially for the youth. Companies aren't satisfied with $60, they want $70 now. Good luck with that. You can only sell those games to old wolves like us who earn money. Kids are playing Roblox, Fortnite, Rocket League, Genshin Impact etc for free. Kids are happy, families are happy(sort of). That's simple as that.

The thing that irritates me about these types of threads is that it promotes the impression in the west that Playstation is completely bombing in Japan.
A walk into any major electronics store in Japan tells a different story. General PS advertising and in store presence and promotion is still huge and far more significant than in the west.

They've done their absolute best to make the machines themselves as uninteresting as possible - how can you blame a generation for not caring?

When I was young consoles were magic. They were different from each other. They advanced in ways that were unprecedented generation to generation. Now they're boring mid-tier PC's and games look more or less identical between them. At least the Switch did something truly unique.

You can certainly argue that things are better now in some ways ( I wouldn't ) - but don't be surprised when you manufacture something boring and then end up with a bored audience.

Gen Z ?
Kids made from water...not sperm....

Meh, people say this about every new generation for thousands of years now. They’re weak, stupid, etc. As if culture, trends, and values have ever remained stagnant in our species’ history.

Sounds like the situation in both US and Japan are the same. Mobile games dominate among the younger generations with Nintendo Switch and PC serving as the supplementary gaming platform, while its mostly the older gen players who play on consoles.

Modern aaa console gaming is such a chore, all the freaking battle passes and limited time events. They are turning into a second job.
I don't understand why once they have your money for a pass why you then can't just grind it in your own time.

Maybe they had one of them as a child and are looking for nostalgia. You know bust like people here born in the 80s/90s will look for 8/16/32/64/128 bits gens old games.

It doesn’t matter.

Most kids tastes will evolve as they do.

80% of kids probably watch kids shows and movies at home on their parents iPads or home TVs.

They’ll grow and with age, get more into more sophisticated media, with deeper, richer, more complex and more immersive narratives and experiences.

Mobile as a gaming medium is too shallow to hold the majority of paying adolescent & adult gamer’s attention forever. Equally PCs are too big, to expensive and too space inefficient to ever be the answer for AAA gaming for everyone.

The problem isn’t mobile, it’s that the major modern consoles (with the exception of Nintendo) don’t cater to the young demographic at all.

Another way to think about this:

How many 90+ rating kids/family games are available (at all) PS5/XBSX?

Does it make sense as parents to invest £400+ to have access to maybe 2-3 half decent kids games, where the only way they can play is by hogging the living room TV where dad can’t watch the football and mum can’t watch Love Island?

Or to pay £350 for a switch with a huge library of excellent kids games, zero risk of them wondering into gorefest or porno content and no TV lockup?

Or simply don’t pay anything and hand-me-down your old iPhone 9 so they can play 100+ FTP games, Roblox, Minecraft and YouTube Kids, that keep them busy basically forever.

I’d be interested to hear some examples because those games are 1 in a million in my experience and current AAA games like Spider-Man and God of War are the very definition of shallow experiences.

I’m going to sound like a geezer but I’ll say it:

Slaving away in the f2p mines grinding for morsels of gameplay being essentially bait for whales to showcase wealth is not gaming.

If you have no money and game on a phone get real, grow some hair and emulate a bunch of old good stuff.

Do you think if they did a survey of adults, that mobile wouldn't still be the most popular platform?

I sure ain't happy to see my young niece being harassed on Roblox and having my niece's Roblux money stolen by some jackass who bought inappropriate items to further harass her.

My sister doesn't understand technology and I'm not a happy Uncle.

Just turn off text and voice chat, make sure he/she doesn't spend any real money, turn on age restriction, be an happy uncle.

I did all of that on her previous device but once she got a phone, my sister had her have full access. I don't see them as often, but next time I do I will have to set it all up again.

That’s not what I’m saying. Of course it would be.

I’m talking about the failure of the console market to really capture the family entertainment segment.

Mobile’s dominance is fundamentally a function of how well it does do that. Nintendo also does a great job.

I’m also making the point that it’s not necessarily a problem either for the reasons I articulated already.

I think in general people just want to have fun at the end of the day. Whether its some simple puzzle games or 2D fighting games, or a simple platforming title.

Current era of gaming is allowing people to play easily everywhere. The rise of portable PC, Nintendo Switch and mobile/tablet means people can play without sitting in front of a monitor or a big TV now.
