Shmups: Gamepad vs. Joystick?

Does anyone use a square gate for schmups?

When I got my first TE my excitement about trying it with Pac-Man CE quickly turned to disappointment. I just assumed an octogate was better for schmups to so never even bothered.

Why would you assume that? 99% of all Japanese stick levers in existence are using square restrictors.

Whatever works best for you, sticks aren't going to make you suddendly perform superplays or anything. That said, once I tried a Seimitsu stick I never looked back, and my scores got better, if only because I practiced more with a stick.

I didn't realize they were so ubiquitous. Just assumed it was primarily fighting games I guess.

Now I'm excited to go home and try it out.

I'm probably better with a d-pad, but arcade sticks are fun.

I prefer a joystick: Semitsu LS-32 and Semitsu buttons, not really into the feel of Sanwa buttons.

Otherwise I'll take a Saturn pad. :)
