Sierra Entertainment -- R.I.P.

Something was posted about the VU Games layoffs earlier today -- but it looks now that the Sierra office in Seattle is being shut down entirely.

Sierra will join Atari in that great game company shrine in the sky, watching in sadness as their once-proud names are randomly exploited.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) – The ongoing restructuring at Vivendi Universal Games has claimed the jobs of 350 employees – nearly 40 percent of its U.S. workforce - as the French media company shut down its third division in two months.

The company on Monday informed workers at its Bellevue, Wash. studios that the office would close within two months. In addition to the layoffs, the shutdown will result in the cancellation of card and puzzle video games based on the Hoyle license, one unannounced title and the "Print Artist" line of card, banner and stationary creation software.

Blizzard Entertainment, VU Games' top earning developer, was not affected by the restructuring. Separately, however, the developer did announce plans to delay its upcoming console title "Starcraft: Ghost". Though no specific date was given, it is unlikely "Ghost" will be released in 2004.

The job cuts follow the May shutdown of a pair of longtime development studios. Papyrus Studios (makers of the company's "NASCAR" games for years) and Impressions Games (makers of strategy titles, such as "Zeus", "Cleopatra" and "Lords of the Realm III") both had solid track records in the industry but were closed last month because they had not been living up to corporate expectations. The job cuts associated with those closings were folded into Monday's number, said a VU Games spokesperson.

The Hoyle games, while often scorned by gaming enthusiasts, were quite popular with the casual audience. The franchise moved beyond traditional and casino card games to include puzzle, table and chess titles.

For the past year, the gaming division has been somewhat up in the air, with Vivendi (V: Research, Estimates) actively looking for a buyer. It recently decided to retain the division, making dramatic senior management changes. Still, VU Games lost $250 million in 2003, chiefly due to what president Phil O'Neil referred to as "low-quality products."

The closing of the Bellevue offices mark the end of an era in the gaming world. In the early 90s, those offices were the home to one of the industry's pioneering publishers. Going under the name Sierra, developers in Bellevue created and sold top-selling franchises, such as "Kings Quest" and "Leisure Suit Larry". In 1996, the company was sold to CUC International, the first of a string of owners.

Despite the closing, VU Games still plans to use the Sierra name, much like Infogrames Entertainment changed its name to Atari (ATAR: Research, Estimates) in 2003 to capitalize on its name recognition value.

xsarien - i was told they were dead about a year ago... wonder what took them so long to finally hammer in the last nail?

Papyrus, who was a part of Sierra, was dissasembled as well in this deal. :(

It's sad that the greatest simulation racing game developers the world has ever known were treated like that. :(

Well, considering that they were apparently just working on Hoyle and puzzle games, yeah, I'd consider that "dead," but in a "Night of the Living Dead"/Umbrella Corp kind of way. It's not like there was any major internal development anymore. Christ, they outsourced Leisure Suit Larry.

But if people ever want to talk about the end of a god damned, mother-fucking era when PC games completely pwned everything else, Sierra doesn't deserve its own chapter, it deserves its own book.

(Incidentally: I think this weekend calls for me to dig out my Sierra Collection discs, dust off the 486, and not let go of the keyboard unless I have to go to the bathroom or eat.)

I feel very distraught from this news. The consolidation of the video game industry has created so many casualities that I feel like part of my youth is being taken from me.

Wow, the end of an era. I worked for Sierra for 9 years. 5 in Oakhurst, CA and 4 in Bellvue, WA. This truly is a sad day in gaming.

So many great childhood memories. My favorites being Colonel's Bequest, Dagger of Amon Ra, Police Quest 1/2, Betrayal at Krondor, and Black Cauldron (one of my first games).

I'm pretty sure Relic owns the Homeworld license just like Valve owns the Half Life license.

We should make a chart up, graphing GAF nicks to their roles in the industry.

It might be fun.

The Sierra that I knew has been dead for a long time. When their last graphic adventure was released, that was the death of Sierra. Sure, they published Half-Life and others, but really, those could've been anyone else's releases.

LSL5, Laura Bow 2, Freddy Pharkas, Phantasmagoria, SQ6, GK2, LSL7, LSL Casino and GK3 to name a few. :)

That means, you worked there near the end of the Sierra On Line, before it was acquired because of the failure of their on-line effort.

I remember playing KQ1-6, QFG1-4, PQ1-3, LSL1-6, SQ1-5.

I am extremely sad of course but I'm a bit bothered by their continued use of the Sierra brandname. I would hope that they would lay it down to rest but I guess they felt that some of their products would best be identified with Sierra.

This hurts me on a very real level. I feel connected with Sierra. Space Quest 2 was the first game I ever played on a Windows PC. I will always remember going to my friend Daniel's house and playing that game. Years later when I got my own PC the first thing I searched out was Space Quest. I ended up playing through all five games. Off the top of my head: The Sarien Encounter, Vohaul's Revenge, The Pirates of Pestulon, The Time Rippers, and The Next Mutation. Man did I ever love those games. The Two Dudes from Andromeda. I got Sierra's advertising magazine and read it cover to cover each issue. My first 3D accelerator was the Rendition Verite that Sierra badged and sold.

For me, Sierra is computer gaming. I'll miss you guys.

Do you mean a DOS-based PC?

I feel you, tho. When I bought my first computer of my very own in 1993, I left the store with copies of Chessmaster 3000 and Space Quest IV. I even drew some SQIV fanart in MS Paint! Sigh, those were the days.

DOS/Windows. It was a DOS based game, but the computer was running a version of Windows. Not sure which version...it would have been around 1989.

Yeah, I used to work for the Sierra subsidiary Berkeley Systems. VU merged it with Prizecentral.com to create Flipside.com, which is no longer.

After Dark Games rules. Best casual PC game ever.

I swear I'm not trying to call you out or anything, but I just checked and Windows 3.0 came out in May 1990. I'm just confused because my Space Quest II experience was hellaciously CGA on an IBM XT ... where did you get this future computer?!

He did say he wan't sure... give the guy a break.

Anyway, I remember all the crap I had to go through to get a copy of any Leisure Suit Larry before I was 18. didn't have an older brother, not many older cousins, etc... Such a struggle that I didn't get to experience until I got my PC. Freakin' crazy.

Myself, I absolutely loved Police Quest. Very cool game, busting hookers, fighting bikers, playing poker. :)

But Sierra died once it got involved with the French syndicate. It's not really surprising this day in age, with massive buy outs. It's up to the talent, those who made a killing in the acquisition, to do their own thing like the awesome Brian Fargo, who unfortunately will be published by said French syndicate.

You have to understand, I had a Master System. ;)

(But seriously, folks...Sierra's late 80s to early 90s games were pretty much all I ever cared about in that time period. Sure, I had a Genesis, but my PC got the bulk of the attention.)

So many good adventures, Laura Bow, Kings quest, space quest, larry, police quest and my favorite Quest for glory.....sniffff at least i can still play these on my phone :p

Who needs sixteen colors when you have four beautiful shades of CYAN!

It was more than just cyan, it was Cyan, magenta, white, and black or Yellow, red, green, and black. Nasty colors regardless. Glad my first PC had a EGA video card :)

What, Windows 3.0 was the first version? Haha. It could have been Windows 2.x on a 386/486 for all I know. After all, I was only 8-10 years old. I KNOW I played the game while I was in Texas, and I KNOW I left Texas in June of 1990, so I assumed it was 1989 when I played the game. It could have been May of 1990. I didn't note it in my journal. :) The guy would have had the newest hardware/software though, as his father was quite wealthy and working in the IT industry. Hell, they had a 4-5 story radio antenna in their back yard.

Sierra was so great! I loved the great stories they were able to put in the games and the humor games are so memorable. QfG 3 - So you want to be a hero, is still one of my all time favorite games.
