The fixing of shooting out windows is huge. Hopefully they fix the lag. Its amazing that this game is 13 month old now and is still considered a work in progress. Still only 7 maps. Hopefully the Cold Front map pack is coming out soon.

I would badmouth Slant 6 and hope for Zipper to make a new Socom, but after playing Mag, I can't imagine Zipper would do a better job.

Uncharted 2's multiplayer is as close to Socom 2 as I've ever played.

I know, I still have hope though.

My interest in this game increased after I played the shitfest that is Mag.

Wow, another FUD filled thread regarding the current state of SOCOM.

The game's not broken. It hasn't been for a long time. I'm excited for the DLC.

I have finals until the end of the week, but I can't wait to get back on during break. Hopefully the DLC isn't too far off if this is coming out today.

The game has been fine for the past few months.

I have this game, I wish there was a group as cool as the gaf socom 2 clan. I loved playing socom 2 with those dudes. Good times, but I can't bring myself to get into socom psn. I just don't even try to play it. Maybe mag will be more my speed since I'm not much into finding a group to click with.

I bought a PS3 when the beta for this game came out, and I was sorely disappointed.

Is it worthy now? Are people still playing?

If I pick it up I assume I will be smashed regularly until I get up to speed, I wonder how long that might take.

Its WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better than the beta. In all seriousness, the 1.5 patch did a lot to make this game very enjoyable. 1.6 just fixes a ton of the nagging issues. They still have exploding barrels and propane tanks though.

Before the patch there was about 5-6000 people playing at any given time. Not too shabby.

Seriously, the people who are exciting about Mag but haven't played it yet.....yeah you are going to be disappointed.

Yeah, a lot of people are still playing.

As for if the game is worth it... depends on what you didn't like about the beta. If connection errors, lag, etc. were your problem, all of that has been fixed for a while now.

Yeah my issues were framerate, lag, connections/drops, getting into games with friends, comms, etc.

So, can you play with friends on the same team easily now?

What kind of learning/experience curve would I be looking at?

Yeah, I don't see the community going anywhere - it survived MW2, and after playing MAG I don't see it really pulling many of the players away for longer than a few weeks.

I'll bet the numbers jump a lot with this patch, and even more once the expansion/DLC comes out.

Yeah, all of the network performance issues are gone. I'm not sure if 1.6 will introduce any new issues on release, but the game has been great for the past few months.

You can party up and join games that your friends are in, but for the most part it's still about finding a lobby on your own if you want a more specific game type.

Learning curve is pretty steep depending on how familiar you are with the series, but you can learn relatively quick by just playing respawns to get a feel for the maps/mechanics.

All this Cold Front hype makes me want to try another shot at SOCOM. I was incredibly disappointed after the game-saving 1.50..

And not because 1.50 made the game unplayable, but because I finally realized the actual playable version of Confrontation will never be anything close to SOCOM II. It will take big things to make me feel comfortable supporting Slant 6 with paid DLC.

I did hear they were dropped from PS3 development because of the Confrontation embarrassment - has their been official word on this?

The game works perfectly fine, this fud is hurtful to the game.

Not really most played online ps3 game iirc.
The diehards don't care, they will go on the socom site piss moan and curse and as soon as they get a little feedback from the Devs its all good again.
They are generally more intolerant of new comers, I have been chastised for playing MW and not wanting to play socom and then kicked off clans and deleted from friends lists :lol

A headset is a real good idea.

The community is accepting to new people as long as you don't do anything stupid like teamkill or kill the VIPs

Yeah the the SOCOM community can be pretty harsh and overbearing tbh...:D

You don't want the Socom Confrontation community. Trust me. They're what drove me away from the game. (Besides the assbrokenness of it)

Dude, my first SOCOM match went like this:
-Team Spawn.
-Fersis is killed by a team mate.
-Spawn.
-Fersis is killed by a team mate.
-Spawn.
-Fersis is killed by a team mate.
-Fersis left the game.

Not only that, but my 'team mates' told me i was a 'effing' noob. So they killed me for that.... yeah, they like new players. :(

I miss the old SOCOM-SOCOM 3 days. That was some great online gaming and the community was fun.

SOCOM 3 was not really as bad as everyone seems to say.

I would like to try this again sometime. My main problem with the game was how long it took to do anything... menus were so friggin slow, loading all the time.... it just took forever to get anywhere and the giant patches that kept coming out made me abandon it.

Sad since the game was great whenever I actually got into a game and it worked.

This game is really fun, I just wish there were some noob-friendlier modes so I could learn the maps w/o getting kicked out of games for not knowing the maps.

was my experience as well. clumsy menus, lots of wait times to get into games. by contrast, getting into a mercs team deathmatch in MW2 takes mere seconds.

This person is wrong. MAG is awesome. And felt like a complete game by the end of the beta.

As far as Socom, it seems like unless you played the series prior to Confrontation, you shouldn't waste your time. The Socom community seems to be one of the most hostile and demanding communities out there, but after seeing these patch notes, I guess I can kind of understand some of their frustration.

My copy of the game is still sealed in plastic. Got it with the headset bundle for cheap.

I've never played any of the Socom's before, and given the harsh comments regarding newcomers to the franchise I'm questioning whether I should even bother with the game or just trade/sell it. Might get 5 more bucks or something if I leave it sealed. Heh.

I wonder why it has been so hard for them to fix issues in this game and put out meaningful DLC. Think Sony will invite them back for SOCOM 5?

Sweet news on the Cold Front DLC

I've been calling for heads to roll at Slant 6 since this game came out in hopes of Zipper
doing Socom 5. After playing the Mag beta, I'm not so sure. Socom Combined Assault and Socom 3 were pretty crappy too.

I would be happy with Socom 2 remade in HD and put on the PSN store, I would pay $20 for that day 1. S2 was the best for me took many hours of my life.

I played some Socom last night and I have to say, I noticed an improvement. I love that the screen doesnt have to fade from black at the start of the game anymore. Windows and railings are easier to shoot over.

A few things still bug me.

The biggest thing is that you still can't throw a grenade with you left hand. While it may not seem like much, imagine you are hiding right next to a wall. To your left around the wall you see a guy coming so you lean out to throw a grenade at him. Since you can't throw it with your left hand, your guy throws it with his right hand RIGHT AT THE WALL IN FRONT OF YOU! The grenade will hit the wall and kill you if you dont move. Socom 2 didn't have this problem.

Playing this more, you realize how terrible most of the 7 maps are. The only ones I enjoy are the classics from S2. This will be remedied by the DLC though.

edited to express how I feel lol

/6 said that they were going to offer Socom 2 with HD...I haven't played since 1.5 patch dropped, but I am willing to do this and the Cold Front DLC a try. I really can't imaging that they managed to fix everything that was wrong with this game. I'll report back at some point.
