Star Trek has a long history of exploring strange new worlds, seeking out new life and new civilizations, and boldly going where no man has gone before. Our game, Star Trek Online, has grown on PC over the past six years, but it’s time for us to explore another frontier: PS4.
We are happy to announce that this fall, Star Trek Online will be launching on PS4. Our goal is to deliver the same high quality Star Trek experience to players on PlayStation, with some additional upgrades to make the transition a smooth and natural experience.

For those unfamiliar with Star Trek Online, we are a free-to-play MMORPG based on the Star Trek franchise offering players the opportunity to create their own captain and explore the galaxy as they play through countless hours of content.

Over the past six years of development we have created more than 130 featured episodes (similar to the TV series episodes) that star some of the cast members of the Star Trek series including Michael Dorn, Jeri Ryan, Tim Russ, and more.

Star Trek Online will also be one of the first free-to-play MMORPGs to offer both space and ground combat as you fly through the galaxy in hundreds of iconic ships. Your captain and crew can pilot everything from the classic Enterprise to a Klingon Bird-of-Prey or Romulan Warbird. From cruisers and escorts to science vessels and dreadnoughts, you’ll be able to experience the final frontier on your own terms.

We’re also bringing several enhancements to the PS4 version. Our first major task was to convert a PC game that takes nearly an entire keyboard to play into a game that plays well with a DualShock 4. We focused on getting the controls right before we began work in earnest on this project, because we knew the game had to be as tactical, fun, and accessible as the PC game that preceded it. A combination of radial menus and streamlining HUD elements created a game that is easily understood, instantly accessible, and incredibly fun to play.
Next up, we invested heavily in our engine and added several modern lighting technologies that significantly improved the visual quality of the game. Deferred lighting, light probes, and improvements to our High Dynamic Range lighting system combine to provide more realistic lighting that feels like a true refresh to the game.
Alongside the lighting system, we decided the entire UI needed not only a complete graphical overhaul but to have its entire backend rewritten. The goal here was to create a UI that was incredibly streamlined on the backend to ensure the best game performance possible, while also creating a brand new experience built for DualShock 4.
We’re really proud of how this looks

(For PS4, this is an older PC game).

I'm not a fan of Star Trek but apparently this game is actually something pretty good! If I remember correctly they've overhauled a lot of it. Maybe I'll try it.

Watched a bit of the trailer.

So the universe has deemed that we're allowed to have this, but we can't have Phantasy Star Online 2... I hate this place.

Yo WTF. Does it look this good on PC too? I thought it was so old it looked way worse.

No one asked for this.

Hell yes, i asked for this.

It's the only MMO i got into for about a year (because it is great for singleplayer-like story missions). It's very original while staying very true to the franchise's foundation. It's continuously expanded story-wise and it's what kept me interested in the franchise during this "decade (and a half) of no series".

But it's way to demanding for my old laptop, now i can finally enjoy it again. I'm so excited ^_^

I didn't expect this. What little of it I've played was fun.

Also, y'all gotta stop using platform specific blogs for news. :p

No one asked for this.

I doubt that.

not me

After all, Home is no more

It looks as bad / good as the pc version. The game started development in 2004, changed developers, was released on PC in 2010 and limped along until it became a F2P game when it had some success.
Graphics aside, its a pretty good mmo.

I played this way back when it launched (when it was a traditional $15 a month MMO, not F2P) and it was pretty trash. The starship combat was mildly interesting but the planetary away missions were just the worst.

No idea if it's improved or not, but I doubt adding a bunch of F2P mechanics helped matters.

For those who haven't played it, the space combat is fun, the ground combat not so much.

In this thread; people shit talking an actually really good Star Trek experience.

I look forward to trying this out on PS4. Do we know if it's the same servers? Can we use our PC accounts?

I actually really liked the space combat in this game. Shame I got bored with it when they started forcing long ground missions on me. Like I play a Star Trek game to play in the dirt. Come on.

they also let you do ship captain stuff, like giving your crew members assignments and selecting bridge officers that come with you on away missions

I mean, it's F2P and there aren't really any ST games out there anymore (aside from mobile puzzles). So everyone interested in the franchise should at least give it a shot. If just for experiencing walking on bridge designs, you've never seen before, talking to famous characters and enjoying the atmosphere in Boothbys garden at the academy. You know, the little things good ST games were famous for (talking about Elite Force 1/2, Bridge Commander here).

Can't speak too much about it's qualitys as an MMO nowadays, but it's a hell of a Star Trek experience.

Not a fan but that sounds cool going to give this a try.

Cross platform play or I ain't touching it.

Console MMOs without cross play are ghost towns.

Always been bit interested in this though. Was a big trek guy

I played a lot of the beta on PC, but abandoned it long before it went F2P. I really liked what I saw even then, though. I'll be sure to give a go on PS4 when it releases.

Is it possible to just have a casual experience with this game? I love Star Trek, but I don't have the time to commit to finding a group and playing long sessions

When I played it there was literally no reason to ever interact with another player, so yea you can solo it at your own pace.

Looks extremely bland and dull. After playing Uncharted 4 I would not want to play this even as a Star Trek fan. I'll wait for Star Citizen or Mass Effect Andromeda to get my space fix.
