SteamSpy - Approximate LTD sales for every game on Steam (Updated Daily)

MUnited83

For you.
You might remember the Ars Technica article about the most popular Steam titles in 2014.

A new site, SteamSpy(still in Alpha), uses a similar technique, and you can look up the statistics of most games currently on Steam, with statistics up-to-date(as possible)

Explanation about the algorythm and the limitations

You can search by Publisher, Year, Genres and even check specific Country stats.

Lots of interesting data here( like Valkyria Chronicles being >250 000, Skylines at >850 000, Pillars of Eternity at >200 000 or Skyrim being over 8 million.

Mind that the data is not entirely accurate, doesn't count games owned by profiles set to private, and the games that were recently featured on Free Weekends will have skewed numbers in result of that(there will be warning on the game page if it was recently featured on one). However, in most cases it will be a estimation close to the actual numbers.

Comparison with Official Sales data released by devs/publishers (thanks to Saty for compiling this)

Garry's Mod:
Steamspy (April 2th): 8,513,631 ± 163,804
Official figure (March 1st): 7,616,914 (http://www.facepunchstudios.com/sales-figures/)

Rust:
Steamspy: 2,374,806 ± 87,718
Official figure (March 1st): 2,263,901

SpeedRunners:
Steamspy: 579,408 ± 43,500
Official figure (March 23rd): 600,000

Sunless Sea
Steamspy: 104,106 ± 18,458
Official figure (Feb. 25th): 100,000

The Long Dark
Steamspy: 289,277 ± 30,756
Official figure (January 15th): 250,000+ copies

Octodad
Steamspy: 301,224 ± 31,384
Ars: 279,272
Official (January): 280,898

DevGAF confirming the accuracy of this stats:
They're close enough that I'm liking this site. :)

Just a quick note on my own personal game...the sales data I have and the owners data on the site is off by about ~20k, which is the margin of error that was given. So that's pretty accurate.

The weekly new owners thing is WILDLY inaccurate though. Not even close for my game. (Edit: actually those are very accurate, forgot about the Steam activations via Humble.)

Awesome site though!

Cool. Only glanced at it but some of the error margins for smaller games are ridiculously large, essentially making the the measurement statistically redundant. I'll look into their methodology in a moment to see how it works

Random list of sales figures from steamspy that I found interesting:
The Witcher 2 - 2667K
Rome 2 Total War - 2185K compared to Attila - 232K
The Last Remnant: 630K
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed - 545K
Sid Meier's Pirates! - 425K
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines - 390K
Alpha Protocol - 380K
Binary Domain - 283K
Dragon Ball: Xenoverse - 207K
Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes - 133K
HuniePop - 68K
Assassin's Creed Rogue - 26K
Dynasty Warriors 8: Empires - 12K
Magicka: Wizards of the Square Tablet - 12K compared to Magicka - 3130K. (Is there a bigger sales difference, proportionally, between two games in the same series?)

This site has a great, great deal of information, but the figures are going to be a bit off as explained here. It's great to see a site try to replicate what ArsTechnica did, and then provide all the data publicly.

Edit: Also, remember that this site tracks all games that have been registered on Steam, not necessarily bought on Steam.

Players in the last 2 weeks: 16,333 ± 7,541

Correct me if I'm reading that wrong, but is it really saying that that figure could either be between 8,792 and 23,874?

If so, not the most accurate of numbers.

Deadly Premonition: 112,518 ± 19,788

Huh...

Final Fantasy VII: 817,574 ± 53,259

Now THAT would explain the not-so-absurd-anymore PS4 trolling.

You're correct:

How accurate is this data?

Your usual political surveys are pretty correct mostly because you don't have much choice. It's going to be candidate A, B or maybe C in some countries, so margin of error less than 0.1% should be good enough. After all is it really important if final result for candidate A is going to be 34.5% or 34.4%?

It doesn't work this way with Steam. Imagine users as voters, but instead of voting for one of three candidates, they're voting for several games from tens of thousands available in Steam catalog. Even the most popular paid games are reaching maybe 5% of this audience and most are in realms of 0.1% or even less.

So 0.1% margin of error for a game with 0.1% of Steam audience would produce results that are mostly useless. That's why Steam Spy has to gather millions points of data daily to predict games sales and audience. And that's why Steam Spy is often wrong. Not by much, but still wrong.

That's correct. (although that's the number of people who played it, not the owners).

From what i've seen, the games where the right numbers have been said by the devs/publishers, this comes pretty close to the "+" end of the numbers. Of course, this can very individually on each game, but like with Ars Technica numbers, I think they are often in the ballpark of the real sales.

According to the site, there are 210,000 owners of Life is Strange. That makes me quite happy, since I think it's one of the best episodic games out there.

Alien: Isolation
Owners: 436,463 ± 38,946

Better than I expected, I guess.

Tormentum: Dark Sorrow
Owners: 5,444 ± 4,354

This one sucks, I enjoyed the game, wish they had at least >25K.

men of war assault squad 2. well over 24 mill copies sold, lol?

men of war is the best game series ever. but. edit: oh wait. it had a free weekend maybe? lol

MUnited83

For you.
One of the most interesting things of this and something we had no access to before is the is the percentage of sales by region. It's quite interesting to see. Football Manager, for example, sold 37.08% of the sale on the UK(as expected, really). And It sold more on Portugal(10 million people country) than Brazil or Russia, which really speaks of how crazy we are for Football Manager.(granted, Brazil and Russia are still piracy hotspots, but based on sheer number of users I would have expect the game to sell more on those territories)

It recently had a free weekend, so it's not accurate at all.

Very cool someone is doing a website like this, it's going to be full of useful data. I hope they keep it updated.

It really weirds me out that 630K people own that version of Last remnant.

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic: 764,944 ± 51,522

Time for a sequel!

Also both modern Red Faction games on Steam sold pretty well. It's a shame no one picked up the IP.

Also, holy crap I knew Split/Second didn't do well but: Owners: 14,519 ± 7,109 is reaaaal bad. Blur is unlisted so I can't check that but I wonder if it did even worse.

Way more sales than I expected, tbh.

Split/Second wasn't on Steam until a few months ago when Disney vomited their vault onto Steam suddenly. 15k for an older game that hasn't had a sale isn't actually that bad, especially since the PC port is shitty (capped at 30fps).

NiGHTS: 218,685 ± 27,581
Jet Set Radio: 107,981 ± 19,386

Well, that's not as bad as it seemed, even if NiGHTS was in a bundle recently and Jet Set Radio has been really cheap as well. Encouraging for VC to have outsold both already, though.

This is kind of hilarious:

Tomb Raider: 396,537 ± 37,126

Arkham City - 568,037 (replaced by GOTY - 2,289,387)

Shattered Horizon - 204,167

Onimusha 3: Demon Siege - 23,593
Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 - 22,685 (2015 - 88,926)
James Bond: Blood Stone - 20,870

1701 AD - 9,074
Divinity II - Ego Draconis - 7,259 (replaced by Divinity II: Developer's Cut - 525,389)
Wheelman - 2,749

Note: they estimated Wheelman at 8,323 a few days before. When the sales are that small, the margin of error is huge, and that applies to a fair few games further up

There's many other games that have been removed. I pasted the AppIDs from this list into the URL of Steamspy to get these figures, if any of you want to try some yourself

Looked up a bunch of indie RPGs for obvious reasons,

I think that's the first one.

The new one has:

Owners: 2,994,443 ± 101,436

Owners of my game, Love: 35k.
Owners of Bad Rats: 350k.

Well, I guess I have to kill myself now.

If it's any consolation 99% of those Bad Rats sales are probably from people buying it on sale as a joke gift to friends. I bet the dev(s) laughed all the way to the bank though.
