The Darwin Project (Battle royale - PC/XB1) closed alpha announced for Nov 10-12 (PC)

Almost put "Hero/class-based battle royale" in the title, because in the trailer there are abilities going on (like going invisible or putting up a force shield), but don't know if it's character specific or anyone can use them. Also this is smaller scale than your regular BR game. Currently it's 10 players as opposed to the standard 100. Amazon Seattle is also working on something similar, so this is like an upcoming sub-genre of BR.

MONTREAL, CANADA - Oct. 19, 2017 - Scavengers Studio is excited to announce that Darwin Project will soon be opening its ice-covered gates as it kicks off its first Closed Alpha Weekend for Windows PC gamers on Friday, November 10. To celebrate, the team at Scavengers will be blowing the lid off Darwin Project's embargo as they unleash battle royale carnage upon Twitch, YouTube, and the coldest reaches of the internet, allowing players to stream their struggle against the elements for the first time.

Whether you plan to join the ranks of Darwin Project's brutal combatants or will be tuning in to cheer on your favourite hunters, Scavengers has you covered. Over the course of the weekend, the team will be taking to Twitch to answer fan questions and give you a behind-the-scenes look at this science experiment-turned-reality show. Want to get in on the action? The Closed Alpha Weekend will run from:

Start: Friday, November 10 at 9:00am PT / 12:00pm ET / 4:00pm UTC

End: Sunday, November 12 at 9:00pm PT / 12:00am ET / 4:00am UTC

In addition to opening Darwin Project's content creation floodgates, it's the perfect time to celebrate Scavengers' upcoming journey to Kyiv for Casual Connect, where Darwin Project has been nominated for the renowned Indie Prize. If you're planning to attend, don't hesitate to stop by and say hey to the team, located in the Parkovy Congress and Exhibition Center, Lecture Hall 1, booth number 1012.

First unveiled at PAX East 2017 and later showcased as part of Microsoft's E3 press briefing, Darwin Project takes the battle royale genre up north to the Canadian Rockies. Set against a post-apocalyptic backdrop, an impending ice age has kick-started a twisted new reality show, in which participants must fight to the death to earn their survival. Other combatants won't be players' only worries though, as the harsh climate will put even the most hardened survivalists to the test.

Darwin Project offers a competitive multiplayer third-person experience with an emphasis on survival. Players must withstand extreme environmental conditions, track opponents, craft tools, set traps, and even negotiate temporary alliances to be the last one standing at sunrise.

edit: Gaffer hands-on

I played this at PAX East earlier this year. I feel bad since everyone is going to compare this to Battlegrounds, but they play very different. This game is much smaller scale and is influenced by Hunger Games to a much larger extent.

You are in a built enclosure/killing field with pre marked sections that will close off one by one. Survival is a much bigger deal, with having to build fires to starve off the cold. The demo I had you either had an axe or bow and arrow. No guns at all. You had to collect resources to craft upgrades. Tech boxes would drop that gave you power ups like cloaking and shields. The whole thing was much more arcadey as well.

It was a lot of fun, but I was concerned it was a bit shallow and may not keep people's interest long. Unfortunately due to that shitty shoutcast segment, doubt many people will try it all.

I'd like to think there was no MOBA announcement at E3. BR is the next hot thing, right after hero shooters. Oh and card games.

Was that the game with the stupid sports announcer on E3 stage?

Yeah, the shoutcaster. Damn shame. Game looks cool but that dude was awfullll

Darwin Project seems to be looking to add more basic survival stuff (for instance, the map they've been showing off is snowy, so you have to build a fire to avoid hypothermia) to the BR formula. I'm intrigued.

It looked like a competitive survival game at E3. I bet they pivoted (word of the generation)

The trailer with the announcer throws me off this game so much, it's very obnoxious. I'm excited to see what the Battle Royale subgenre brings next, but not like this

Is it wrong to say that I completely forgot about this game mainly because of that guy screaming at E3? Still, it will be neat to see full games in action.

I remember reading an interview with the devs where they said they were disappointed with how the game was shown at E3. Can't say I blame them because that segment was awful. A damn shame too because the game looks genuinely cool and different from the other Battle Royal games and modes we're seeing.
