I will subscribe this thread for future reference. I don't currently have any animation to show off but I'll be attending schools in the future to learn about 3D animation. Hopefully then I'll have some work to show off :p

Hmm I'm an environmental artist, but I'm still practicing my animation skills as well. I'll keep this bookmarked since I'm sure there are a good amount of animators here that could offer some advice.

Hopefully some riggers as well? :D

Hey guys!

I'm the Lead Animator at Bioware, working on Mass Effect 2. I'm also doing Animation Mentor and have graduated Sheridan College's char. anim. program. Most of my work is up at my website:

www.bradkinley.com

Some of the animation mentor stuff is in progress, but the 'reel' section has some more final stuff. Nice to see a thread on something I'm interested in!

Who's your instructor? I had to take a LOA for the 4th term right before week 1 ended.

Here's mine from week 1 class 4

I've been meaning to make this thread. Good thing you did or else I would never have gotten around to it :lol

Great stuff so far!
I want to put up my stuff, but I'm not allowed to at the moment.
We did a group short film for 3rd year at Sheridan this past semester. I want to post it, but I'm not sure if I am allowed to do that before the Ottawa awards.

Heh.. I actually don't like animation that much, I'm way more into concept art and modeling :/

Any cheap way to learn?
Animation is animation, as long as you have an eye for it that's good enough to be able to learn any software package.

Just curious, did you study animation at college or more for fun? Because I'd suggest getting a book called the Animation Survival Kit by Richard Williams (Roger Rabbit), if you haven't already.

Also for now, download a personal learning edition of Maya along with a rig, and just practice (there are plenty of good sites to teach the fundamentals of Maya).

I shouldn't be here, but there's a tank I made in a flash course that was a whopping 4 days of length :lol

You can click the turret once the motor is on. And though I like the look of it and how it animates, I'm more of an illustrator than animator type. It was really fun to try though. Flash is an awesome program. I really don't like 3D modelling...

When i think animators, i usually take it as a general term for people in the animation industry. So, I'm gonna go ahead and post some of my stuff. I'm mainly into modeling, lighting, rendering and dynamics. I am trying to get better at animation though so that my personal films look better.

Anyway, here's my website www.christostzeremes.com. The first two posts up there are my final thesis film (the sound is going to be redone completely) and my early cloth reel. On the side I have some past films as well as some stills and stuff.

The thing I've been working on the most lately is getting my Samus model rendered and lit for my reel. Here's a quick still. I'm working on some action poses now.

It's a post graduate. The BA traditional animation course has a little bit of 3D, but not much.

Thanks! I wanted her to have some normal proportions and make the suit look like it actually covered a body somewhat. It is kind of strange thinking that her shoulder pads would engulf her whole body.

On the whole, she could use a pass of texturing, but that is something I'll be doing later on.

I was looking into things this year:
1 yr. Intro (I didn't have a portfolio coming out of HS)
4 yr. BA
2 yr. Computer Animation post-grad

7 years of fun! I'd be 28 by the time I graduated. Haha.

I'm 25 and half way through... but yes, it's a little ridiculous.

And the post grad is WAAAAAY too expensive. If you know how to animate, all you are doing is learning software after that. It's easy to find someone who knows how to work Maya or 3DS, but it's harder to find a competent artist who does.

Huh it's nice that you're able to take AM while you're working. I thought AM is fairly intensive so it'll be really hard to do combined with your intense work as well. Aren't there a lot of all-nighters in the animation and vfx industry ?

While we're on this subject, I hope we can also discuss about the trend and health of the vfx/animation industry. Now that California is in big problem and many studios are closing down, that is obviously bad news for animators and CG artists. Wonder how you guys are surviving out there !

Oh, and good job on the work, guys ! Very awesome :)

At about what term does it get intensive? So far the most work I have done as far as animating is about 240 frames. I guess it all depends on how complex you want to make your shots. As a first time animator I try to keep it relatively simple, as I suck.

I sound like some bitter old man, but I work 7 days a week 14-15 hours a day just to keep up with work and Animation Mentor. I don't recommend doing both if you can swing it. And I'm talking about even in class 1, bouncing ball shit. Class 4 was insane and I had a few all nighters.

Treo - I'm in Jason Martinsen's class. Good mentor!

I did a BFA, and then the post grad, then Animation mentor (with pockets of working in between each in the industry.

I would reccomend doing the Intro, 4yr BA, 3 month maya Animation mentor intro, 18 month Animation Mentor program. For me, that would be a good route.

Yeah that's what I figured, haha. Hope you keep working hard on animation and get a sweet demo reel out of AM. My plan is to learn more vfx and get into film making. Save up money and work on animations on my spare time with a possibility of enrolling in AM later when I stop working a bit... then on to Pixar :lol

Hey do you mind sending me the syllabus for session 4? I thought that the new beta program for LOA would at the very least let us have some access to it, but as it stands now it is very spartan, we don't have access to anyone else in the LOA program, which makes me wonder why even have it at all. I guess the videos of Shawn Kelly and co. telling us to hang in there is worth it /sarcasm :p.

I was glad to get the newer Bishop with face controls prior to taking my leave, that way I could practice.

Nice to see another AM student.

BTW my last Mentor Was Marek Kochout.

Ok, I posted most of these serval times already on GAF... I love 2D animation and so I ended up working on a fan point and click adventure game for 3 years. Here is a very limited selection of some stuff I did:

Awesome thread. I wanted to be an animator, but I found 3D modelling much more fun, so I decided to stick to that. Saying that, I would still love to be able to animate. There's a lot of theory that goes behind it which is cool.

Is there an official 3D Modellers thread?

No idea if this thread is aimed at just animators or generally anyone who works in 3d.........but considering the lack of any threads then I thought it might be OK to post up some work for my final yr university collaboration.

Two of us worked on this for a period of 4 months in Unreal Engine 3, with the main aim to be able to cut a games trailer from what we created. In the end we also made the level playable on the PS3 as just a UT3 deathmatch which required us to optimize so we could actually get it running etc.

Apologies for the Mirror's Edge music which we used during our trailer........we couldn't find anything decent so took the easy way out with matching something up to the first person camera action.

Trailer here

ColR100, I watched your level trailer and thought it was great. It obviously showed that you guys can work under system limitation which is important. Depending on what you want to do later, though, you may need to do some high-level stuff in high-poly. For example, if you want to get into modelling, you should get to know zbrush well and make high-poly objects and apply detailed textures on them. If you want to be an animator, you still need to make some good models and animate them very well. You have to specialize a bit in your demo reel to get into a studio and I wouldn't limit myself to just videogame studios. If you need, you may want to think about pursuing another diploma from a more specialized school such as Vancouver Film School (which I'll be attending w00t !) or other well known schools in your area. I think, in this business, school name does play some role so make sure you choose well. You can also look into AnimationMentor if you want to learn through online.

Thanks for taking the time to have a little watch of it. I'm purely an environment artist based in the UK......so all the AnimationMentor stuff along with the VFS is in a way irrelevant to me.

Having just finished a degree its time over the next few months to purely work on a few portfolio pieces. I use Mudbox by the way as well.........I don't think I'd ever go back to Zbrush until they change that backwards interface up, although I have used it for a year or so.....just that MB is my thing personally.

And you say 'specialized school like VFS'.........so expensive, seriously. The know how theses days is all on the internet and pushing yourself in your own time. If you've yet to attend VFS don't expect to walk out of there having an award winning showreel like a few of their grads unless you say goodbye to your social life and spare time, it seriously is that much pure dedication. It's usually a top up course as well where people would typically attend after already having done 2-3 years somewhere else.

Well I don't think it hurts to learn another powerful modeling software :D I hang around at CG Talk and every other modelers there use zbrush so I expect it'll be a mainstream software in 3D no matter what field you're in. As for VFS, yes I know what I'm getting into, and I have mentally prepared myself for it. I have previously taken a 3D summer camp with them years ago and enjoyed my time there. That was how I was introduced to 3D in the first place ! Anyways, there is still some time before I start my class at VFS so I'm taking part-time courses in classical drawing and intro to Maya courses in the meanwhile to prepare myself. I have talked to many current students and alumni of VFS so I hope I'll be ready for the intense training !

I'm based in the UK and I've visualized a set for the guy that designed the BBC News, Channel 4, Al Jazeera sets. Done character animation for TV Idents / music videos. And I'm currently working as a motion graphics designer for an inflight entertainment company.

I might put up a more recent examples of my work if this thread lasts another week or so.

Great work everyone. I'm a little sad that there isn't much 2d work in this thread. I love doing 3d animation, but my heart will always be with traditional. I would really love to pursue a career in traditional feature animation, but the job pickings are slim.

We could always count modeling, or anything to do with computer graphics under this thread.

But just a thought.

Oh and also, I think I'm going to flesh out my OP to put the links of everyones work there, along with a few other things to help out people who want to begin animation (suggested books, amongst other things).

But yeah, hopefully we can keep this thread going.

Oh hey, there's some animators on GAF! That's awesome.

I finished a animation Uni degree last year and have been freelancing since. Some of my stuff if you're interested:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2DfpIG3qpI

Lucy Lolly, my final film on the course. A mix of photoshop flash and traditional animation, and the longest film I've made so far.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SG227Ng-8U0

Rabrab. Mixes flash and Maya animation ( first and only time I'm ever touching 3D!).

Current showreel (have a new one in the works): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfYq5CFYqBw

At the moment I'm working on a short film for a young carers club which is almost complete and in February I did animation for this documentary: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjl7aXeO51A

I think modelling is fine, if it is used in an animation. Otherwise it has nothing to do with animating something.

Static models (sculptures) go under the art topic.

It could be worth making this "The Official Animators and Modelers Thread!" instead.

Could a moderator please change the name?

It would make more sense I guess.
