Those not living in the USA, how do you feel about what's going on there?

Its interesting though, at least one side of the USA is progressive and always tries to move forward. You have entire countries with a conservative system in some cases all bad.

As a Norwegian we were occupied by nazis for five years. My grandfather fought them and he was almost killed when Bergen was bombed. I still have authentic letters from his friends including Jews who wrote to him from concentration camps, asking for things like shoes etc... I think most of them died. On the wall I have a personal letter from our King thanking them for their effort and resistance during the war. He never really spoke about what he endured during the war - not even to my father, but I can imagine how horrible it was just by the fact that he struggled with nightmares afterwards.

What we are seeing now is so incomprehensible and disgusting that I am a total loss of words. That people are marching the streets hailing the return of the most evil and tyrannical regime Europe has ever seen makes my blood boil unlike its ever done before. Seeing your president not even condemning it right away puts an icy chill down my spine of shock and confusion, scared of which direction America is heading. Still at the same time seeing the massive backlash and resistance fills me with hope, so keep doing that because it helps and it's being heard all across the world.

From the UK here and quite honestly I'm appalled at what's happening in both our countries.

It's the bare faced stupidity that's getting to me the most.

I don't see how we can continue to be a dominant superpower with this many losers in our country. Immigration has probably just slowed the inevitable but I imagine pretty soon the smart people are going to start going to other countries and then the collapse of the American Superpower is going to accelerate.

I live here so I am saddened and shocked to see it, but we brought it upon ourselves.

This is already happening. The number of people--even from the USA itself--that are now looking up the requirements to migrate, invest in, study in, or otherwise engage in Canada has jumped up by a significant percentage since November. That's especially true for STEM businesses from other countries that have now reconsidered starting up in the US. Canada seems like a safer, more stable choice.

America has been iffy for me a while now being a brown guy with a Muslim name but it's totally bonkers seeing the recent events occur. With trumps lack of respect in international politics and the clear divide in American citizens really gives off a unstable nation to visit. Makes me appreciate uk a bit more because there's racial problems but at least we don't have the government supporting the racists.

Oft hope is born when all is forlorn.
USA is huge and beautiful. There are so many states I would like to visit. So far I have only been to few cities. NYC, Boston, Vegas.

Doing a pacific coat drive is on my bucket list. From Vancouver all the way to California. Then Florida, and buch of hikes on top national parks.

Politics can go to hell. I am sure majority of the US is filled with great people.

I grew up with Obama as the face of the US. I was aware of the US dark past ( what developed country doesn't have one?) and more recent stuff like the Irak war and so on. But Obama gave the US the look of progress and heading to the right direction.

I grew up with George W. (and Florida man) as the faces of America. I knew the US is ultra conservative compared to the rest of the world.

I saw the rise of the far right in Europe. I saw neo—Nazis marching on the streets I live.

What has happened over the last few months hardly surprised me. Obama was only an illusion of progress.

It's a fucking disgrace what's going on over there considering this is the most powerful nation in the world. To see privileged white people complaining about minorities taking their country from them is so pathetic and disheartening. I'm not even surprised Donald Trump got elected considering the underbelly of the US is a fucked up place.

In a way, I'm glad all these racists are coming back into the limelight because it's the only way you're going to get the majority of people talking about those issues. Those beliefs needs to be eradicated.

Everything I read about America makes it seem like a very scary place to live.

Is close. Except I can't find a gif where there's also pearl clutching.

I feel very happy to live where I do right now.

This is all a direct effect of the degradation of our democracy and the unsustainably dysfunctional legislative branch of government. The political system in this country is broken. The biggest single biggest contributor to this, ironically for this thread, was an Australian, Rupert Murdoch. Not to say that the US isn't ultimately responsible for its own problems.

You guys are the richest and most powerful country on earth. You've got everything going for you... How is it possible to squander all that potential and turn into a shitshow like that?

Shit sucks but to be honest I'm sick of all the US politics threads in Off-Topic. I think at this rate there should be a seperate board for political discussion.

EDIT: Case in point:

The one hope I have (as an American) is that this horrific culture we have been revealed to be will teach millions of "moderates" how fucking costly their "color-blind," privilege-enjoying views are for this country. None of these views are new. They just have an official forum now.

My country has been cancerous for a long time. Now it's just gone malignant because we elected a fucking monstrous idiot/idiotic monster.

TL;DR White men.

It's pretty easy.

Just have the rich people have the poor people fight each other.

Been happening that way since the birth of this country.

Why change now.

Pretty sad about the whole thing, but also have mixed feelings about various side effects and things related to the weekends events.

Off topic, but yeah, I would have preferred it if political discussion took place in the thread designated for it in the Community section.

I'm taking a history paper on GAPE and some of what I'm learning is pretty alarming when thinking about the modern day U.S. My lecturer is from the U.S. himself and he seemed pretty shook in this week's lecture.

America is a country of contradictions and hypocrisy which is deep in its core foundation.

The founding fathers signed their landmark constitution where "All men are created equal" despite holding slaves and it took them almost 100 years later to abolish it and then longer to give them EQUAL rights.

Race inequality is in the core of Americas foundation.

Used to shit on the USA for fun, as a way to cope with the dwindling influence of my country on the international scene (and consequently how susceptible we are to the us cultural empire.)

There's not much good hearted fun left to have at your expenses, these days. Just dumbfounded at how quickly everything turned into the current shit hurricane.

I likes going back to the times of the fall of Berlin Wall for me. It's an empire going down, an empire that fucked up the world post 1991. I feel sorry for its citizens tho.

As a Canadian, America to me is a 3rd world country.

And I don't care about how much money, technology, military power etc the U.S has. That's actually the problem. All this money, yet look at the huge gap in income equality.

3rd world dictators hoard everything to themselves. Electing Trump is just handing over more power to the plutocrats and corporations.

Rest of the world: I am sorry we let ourselves become this fucked up. It could become horrific for everyone real quick.

Extremely frustrated more than anything.

Americans blew it so hard that it's still boggles my mind.

Like... Fuck, I don't know... How much more does it take?

On the plus side at least you gave the rest of the world a head start on a number of industries so thanks I guess? But as a matter of principles, I hate people would make very obvious stupid decisions.

I'm really fucking sad and mad at the same time.
Sad that the idiots here in Sweden think we're better and refuse to see that with that fuck in Command and his base getting bolder it means those of the same ilk over here do the same.
They where here before Trump, they have always been here and people have had their head stuck in the sand and refuse to admit what is happening and now with over 1000 domestic terrorists they still refuse to admit it. With over 60 arson against refugee housings, a few hundred hooligans running around trying to attack refugee children, white nationalist going over to Russia to receive military training and walking our streets at night to keep people "safe" all I can say that they are fucking stupid.
Oh we're getting a visit from #PunchANazi fuckwad as well. This will be fun to see how much more fun it'll be.

Oh and a big ass fuck you to the rest of the Europeans here that refuse to admit that this shit happens in their countries as well. Wake the fuck up.

Disheartened and disappointed.

Though now whenever a US gaffer tries to call Aus racist I'll have a good lol. Your rubbish politics is starting to spread over here as well which is worrying.

As someone from SE Asia, I'm feeling sad that the US is turning into a 3rd world country.

And like another poster has mentioned, America has everything, so the fall from greatness in such a short time is kinda shocking. I'm thinking the last time I thought the US was awesome and a real superpower was under Reagan. It all went downhill after that.

As a Canadian citizen...

I find it far too close to home. I have very little desire to visit anywhere in the states that are not strictly democratic. The south scares the shit out of me, as do the bankrupt cities. Things are getting worse and worse every day, and I feel like it will result in violence on a fairly large scale at some point. Things have been escalating further and further, and we're not even at the breaking point yet. I just hope it doesn't spill over into my own country.

I would love to visit some friends in LA and revisit Hawaii, but the political and economic climate makes many cities feel unsafe at this point.

The thing is, the "greatness" of the USA is a direct result of the same decisions that lead to its current economical state. That's what happens when you give so much power to companies. You get both immensely wealthy and successful global mega corporations and poor people working several jobs while still lacking good healthcare.

from canada:

y'all are batshit insane

americans need to learn to be kind to one another

y'all are too racist in that you make alberta seem like a bastion of idealism

learn to realize freedom of speech is a double-edged sword

the world table doesn't want you around on thanksgiving.

Words can't even describe. I look at America and all I see is a child lashing out for attention. A third world country which tries to look developed. One which has several problems that are easily solved if they only look a look outside their own borders for solutions. A country losing its relevance. An example for the rest of the world of what not to do.

Whats sad is that it doesn't have to be like this. In actuality America is a powerful, rich developed country which can be a force for good in the world. But all too often they choose not to in favour of idiocracy.

Civil Rights are taken away in the name of fear. Your military continues to grow in size despite the fact that you have people dying from not being able to afford even the most basic of healthcare. Education keeps on being cut further and further. Your police are corrupting while turning into their own military force. You let corporations essentially own the common man despite the country's own overwhelming push for the concept of freedom. You have psychopaths getting guns and shooting up schools every other week. 50% of the population hates the other 50% with a burning passion, made worse by your own media institutions and your politicians whom are bought off in broad daylight and pushing laws and opinions against you.

You can go on and on, and it's simply depressing and shouldn't have ever happened. I honestly don't know how you recover.

The problem is how influential american culture is. Everyone is watching. So when nazis become a thing in the US I fear for every other country, as that trend might be exported. So pls get your shit together

Just proves what I've felt and known for a long long time. nationalism is bad it causes poeple to have a inflated view of themselves and their so-called superiority.

Edit. Poor education of a nations history and Idiology taken to the extreme is dangerous. This weekend with hate speech vs freedom of speech. Also US citizens view of their Constitution as if it's perfect and not to be critiqued is bordering on fanaticism.

Final edit. The only "1st world" country where 50% of the nation can rationalize Healthcare away as a privilege and decry any all form of "socialism" as evil and bad. It's a country where you can feel the wealth distribution as you drive from state to state yet no one wants to truly solve the problem without invoking the words "leftist and rightist" ideas. A nation where people will legit blame Obama for destroying race relations during his tenure as president. It's all embarassing and crazy if you ask me.

With the history they have there... I am not surprised at all.
And my country is so ready to import this fascist bullshit.... because we love import stupid ideologies from there.

(Canada)... I see it as a 'decline of an empire' sort of thing. It started with Trump's election of course, but I think we're seeing America's clout and moral authority decline in real time. Who knows where we'll be by 2025 (that's when I think Trump will leave, sorry I don't have much hope in your country :p) and what America's place on the world stage will be by then.

Oh yeah, that stuff spills over here too. A lot of talk of 'SJWs' here nowadays, when I never heard that word spoken before 2017 outside the Internet. But I also think that sometimes, when the US does something stupid, we tend to backlash against it harder than Americans do, and Trump/Neo-Nazis seems to be one of those things.

They now have the leadership they deserve. The American government has served only itself (and those in power without holding political office) for the longest time. Those who do nothing to improve the country and everything to stay in power have been selfish for so long that hopefully someday soon the whole fucking system falls in on itself, because of their neglect. Good fucking riddance. The most appalling part is that these political leaders (Senators, Representatives etc) are actually so good at campaigning that they get large groups of people to vote opposite to their interests. These voters have no one to blame but themselves for the state the country is in right now.

Edit:
For me the final straw was Sandy Hook. If an event like that does not lead to any form of meaningful change, there really is no hope.

Edit 2 and Ps.:
The only thing that genuinely worries me is the impact for the EU if and when the US economy collapses.
