Turkey summons German ambassador over rally ban

Turkey has summoned the German ambassador in Ankara to protest against the cancellation of a public speech by a Turkish minister in a German town. Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag had been due to address expatriates in Gaggenau in support of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's controversial reforms.
But local authorities withdrew permission for the rally, saying the planned venue was not big enough.
Turkey arrested a German-Turkish reporter last week, straining ties. Deniz Yucel, who works for Die Welt, is accused of producing terrorist propaganda and undermining the Turkish government.
Many Turkish writers and journalists have been arrested in a widespread crackdown that followed a failed coup against Mr Erdogan in July 2016.

The decision to summon the German envoy was made by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, Reuters said, quoting ministry sources.
Mr Bozdag has already cancelled his planned visit to Germany, where he had been also due to meet his German counterpart.
"It is unacceptable that German authorities, who constantly lecture us about human rights, democracy, rule of law, free speech... do not tolerate a meeting organised by the Turkish community," the Turkish minister said.
However, officials in Gaggenau, south-western Germany, said they had cancelled permission for the rally due to space considerations.
"Because the event is now known across the region, the city expects a large number of visitors," local authorities said in a statement.
"The Bad Rotenfels hall [in Gaggenau] parking lots and access road are insufficient to meet that demand."
Mr Bozdag had been expected to encourage the Turkish community in the western German town to support Mr Erdogan's controversial proposals to give greater powers to the presidency.
The Turkish authorities say the changes are needed to bring stability, while opponents say the reforms would cement one-man rule in the country.
Turkish citizens living abroad are eligible to vote in a referendum on the issue in April.
About three million people of Turkish origin currently live in Germany.

This is making some big rounds here in germany since the federal goverment really have the balls to tell Erdogan to fuck off and do his election events in his own country

The Town Hall of Gaggenau also received a bomb threat this morning.

Being the German ambassador surely must be a lot of work in those last couple of years. Seems he is getting summoned every other day lol.

Reality is writing the best satire. Turkey protesting since they are denied "free-speech". Could be an Onion piece, really.

Or you know, don't have your politicians go around campaigning in other countries and stirring shit up. You're not running for office in Germany, so don't hold rallies there.

Proud of our government for taking a stance on this.

Erdogan and his cronies should fuck off trying to leverage our freedom and democracy to get rid of their own.

Tensions are pretty high right now. Merkel (and other members of the government) also called out Turkey in a speech this week for imprisonment of the German-Turkish journalist Deniz Yücel in a very aggressive tone.

Edit: Germany actually summoned the Turkish ambassador. This might be the payback for that.

People who suppress freedoms really are massive cunts, aren't they? I agree. Go and tell Erdogan how you feel.

I wonder how the summoning of ambassadors usually goes. I always imagine them getting cussed out for an hour or two while they pretend to care and then back to business as usual.

OP you might want to add that the event was originally applied as "theater performance" and was allowed at first.
Only after it was decided to drop the "theater performance" part of the "theater performance event" and was replaced with this planed rally - germany started to swing the ban hammer.

Great to see Germany not bowing down to this dictator asshole.

Fuck Erdogan for bringing Turkey slowly back 1000 years.

Well he was allowed to rally in Oberhausen which was all kinds of wrong now there was a shitstorm against the arena who allowed this so germany actually is bowing to since they allowed his other events

Turkish citizens who live in Germany are quite numerous, can vote, and are often staunch Erdogan supporters because they can feel emboldened by his religious rhetoric without having to live with the consequences of his actions. That's why this happens.

Yes German Turks are a strange phenomenon, but their ancestors jumped straight from Turkish villages in the East to German cities. No transitional period.

I'm a British born Turk. Turks here are mostly anti-Erdogan even though we are mostly descended from villagers as well.

My favourite demographic of Turk are the Secular types from the coasts. It's almost like 2 separate ethnic groups such is the difference.

Alternative fact: at this point, the German ambassador is always camping in front of the president's palace as they summon him every week or two.

Turkish kindergarten...
