I still don't get the big picture behind this "betrayal."

Is it because they delayed it or just the exclusive thing?

Its the 7 month delay of a finished game that was set to release in 3 weeks, at least as far as the world knew, just so it can launch with the ps3 and 360 versions....which probably didnt exist a few weeks ago either, thats pissing people off.

Okey dokey, everything makes sense now. That does suck.

I'm actually in shock about this whole Rayman deal myself...My whole family( wife & kids) waiting for this one ....bad move ubi....

It's the fact that it was delayed 2 weeks before release on a new console that some people purchased, at least in some part, to play this game. They obviously knew for some time that it wasn't going to release in Feb and yet they didn't announce it. The game is complete for the Wii U, as even Ubisoft has mentioned. There is absolutely ZERO reason for the delay for Wii U. The multi-plat doesn't matter to me. It's the way Ubisoft has handled the entire ordeal is just bush league, IMO.

Because it's "Oh, hey, sorry you can't buy this complete game that you were looking forward to buying in two weeks, but here's a consolation demo we cobbled together that you can play in the mean time."

Dunno why it's hard to see how insulting that is.
Pretty insulting to me......can we bomb their web sites with replys....let them know there is a Wii U community building !

The policy is incredibly gamer-friendly(if you're a 360 gamer), but anti-publisher. Have there been any games that didn't follow this policy? Downloadable or retail? I can't think of any.
Come to think of it...I suppose I can't either, thing is it feels like such a raw deal in every direction other than PS360 gamers. Nintendo gets shafted because obviously this was an exclusive, N-gamers and Ubi fans get the short end because they've got to wait 7 months for a game that for all intents and purposes is finished and finally(more importantly?) the devs are screwed because they've been working their asses off for what seems nothing. I imagine its hard for them to be passionate about their job or project after this kerfuffle...Anyways I guess what I'm most curious about is, is there going to be some consolation to fans, gamers, and Nintendo in the long run?? What is Ubi willing to caugh up?? I know it all boils down to shrewd business descisions on a fundental level, but they must understand there's bound to be repercussions.

I doubt we will get anything more than the 'exclusive demo' but some have been posting on their Facebook page, a petition, miiverse, etc... There have also been a few Gaming sites (GameTrailers, EuroGamer, etc..) that have had some poor views of Ubisoft over this. Ubisoft has to know, and clearly they have at least taken some note by announcing an exclusive demo, which seemed to add fuel to the fire.

Just don't get your hopes up that things will change, is my suggestion.

Does not seem smart at all. I had my 60 in hand, don't know if i do anymore.

I've seen a couple of these:

"Ubi had to delay it because if the Wii U version came out on time, then nobody would buy the 360 or PS3 versions in the future."

I'm afraid I don't understand.

For me it's insulting because they actually acknowledged the negative implications of their acts and they offered an "exclusive" demo as a response to that general unconformity.

Another demo? Gilliemot must have read that devs forum post. "So hey guys, from now until release I want you working on demos for each month. And add 3 new worlds while you're at it. Have fun!"

The theory goes: If it's released months after the Wii U version, 360/PS3 gamers will consider it an "old game" by the time they get a chance to play it. 360/PS3 gamers want "new" experiences.

They really, REALLY need to release this game now and back out of this PR nightmare. It's not worth the mild amount of extra sales they'd get from the 360/PS3 versions. Release the game and put out a formal apology and it will all go away.

How is it a PR nightmare if the people that got screwed over the is only the tiny Wii U crowd.

Honestly guys, this is only a good thing. I don't understand the term "console drought" when you have other consoles, and I'm sure everyone posting on this forum (and most other people) have another console alongside their Wii U. Who really cares if there's no Wii U games at the moment, there's plenty of ps360 games coming up.

Obviously it desnt take several months to port a game over, theyre gonna add a bunch of crap and remove the murphy sections for the port, which I seem to remember alot of people complaining about having to put up with for single player. Im sure the Wii U version will have stuff added to it in the intervening months as well. This will unquestionably make it a better game.

Made my mark on their page, leaving my unhappy comments behind. It'll get ignored by Ubisoft eyes because I'm now bowing down to them.

Also, this whole posting of theirs is just horrible PR. It's no wonder they're looking for a new PR coordinator. Need some serious assistance in that department. The demo is a pretty horrible consolation prize. No thanks Ubi, not interested.

Amazing. Quite the backlash.

It'll also be interesting to see if someone with more time than me uses Miiverse to see which users swearing an Ubisoft boycott now end up buying the game in September. Though I suppose there's no way to tell if they get it used...

First, you should try and show some empathy for the people who were genuinely excited to play this game on its original release date. This is not "only a good thing" for them, far from it. It is not a good thing neither for the developers that were forced to do crunch time to get it ready for February. Nor is it a good thing for Ubisoft's reputation, as can be seen by the legitimate backlash the company is experiencing whether it be on forums, miiverse or its facebook page.

Secondly, as stated by Ubisoft, the game is ready for the Wii U. The only reason for its delay is to provide enough time to develop the ps3/360 versions. You are simply being naive here. The developers put their hearts into it and were satisfied with the game's finished state.

Last, the whole hypothesis of Ubisoft having the developers go back to the drawing board for additional content (if true, which I have high doubts about) doesn't guarantee a better game. Asking dissatisfied developers to bloat a game's content they were originally happy with while simultaneously working/helping with porting the game to other platforms isn't the brightest idea. This will not unquestionably make it a better game, it remains to be seen. There is in fact a significant chance that this hypothetical added content will pale in comparison to the quality of the original one.

Im not sure this is true. Nor is it to assume the developers were happy with the current game. Its entirely possible Ancel realised that the game that is ready for Wii U now actually isnt all that great and is lacking content and that this delay will improve the game significantly for Wii U too. No question this is a business/marketing/timing decision, but to not consider other factors that went into this decision too is you being naive sir.

"There are no issues with the game development," said Ubisoft public relations specialist Sarah Irvin in a statement to Digital Spy. "The only reason for the delay is to release on multiple platforms"

It is. Unlike your hypothesis about added content and Rayman being a better game thanks to this delay, I am only relating facts you can easily verify. Actually, I'll do it for you this time:

Update: Ubisoft has corroborated this dev's story: Rayman Legends really is complete on Wii U and is only being held back so the publisher can simultaneously release across all platforms.

Source: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-02-08-rayman-legends-dev-pissed-at-ubisoft-for-delay-after-completing-wii-u-version-blames-men-in-ties

The developer wrote a message last month celebrating the project's completion, presumably before the news of the game's delay was handed down.

"Today is a great day! We've closed Legends [development] :)" read a post dated 9th January. "See what you think next month!"

It's unclear who the Zeta69 account belongs to, but years worth of posts point to an ex-Ubisoft Montpellier employee who worked at the company for some time. The developer left on 31st January after the end of Rayman Legends' Wii U development.

He/she describes visiting E3 with Ubisoft last year while working on Rayman Legends and previous projects at Ubisoft Montreal, such as Rainbow Six: Vegas and Far Cry 2. Several recent posts allude to the news of yesterday's delay.

I am looking at this purely from a consumer point of view and it sucks. I can perfectly understand the possible business reasons that pushed for this decision. This has been discussed on a variety of topics around here. Understanding the reasons behind a decision doesn't mean I should endorse it.

Terrible news for me, and Nintendo, also. I was buying a WiiU for this title only. Now, I might get the 360 version, or the PS3 version if it has cross-buy/save with a Vita title (I don't know if there is a Vita title). If I buy the WiiU and Rayman Legends together, that's just rewarding Ubisoft for the delay.

I guess the blessing out of this is that Miiverse and WaraWara Plaza are great community hubs for gamers to express themselves on a level unseen on other platforms. It can create an easier time for the consumer to express their opinion on something, driving word of mouth easier.

At the very least, we can thank Ubisoft for showing the potential of these services now.

Don't buy it at full price on Wii U, or if you feel you don't wish to reward them at all, buy used. You owe Ubisoft nothing. If you feel this shit shouldn't be supported, show so with your wallet.

An exclusive demo?

I thought they were dicks before. Now I think they're assholes.

And not the cool kind of assholes that hang out here on GAF.

Their facebook page is exploding with comments...... They need to go ahead and release.
If this movement relentlessly attacks Guillemot's decision through Ubisoft brands on every channels, they will have an unprecedent and real issue. I'm optimistic we can force them to release the game. Their image during 7 months is worth far more than incremental sales in september.

An exclusive demo?

That's awesome!

Ubisoft, I love you so much again! That totally makes up for your announcement yesterday!

F**k you, Ubisoft

I'm super curious about what Nintendo think of this. All that promotion and support for this title, and boom. They were even supposed to handle the Japanese version in order to better promote it :x

If Nintendo are still publishing it in Japan, it won't be multiplatform (at least to begin with)

I don't think Ubisoft cares if you buy the 360, PS3 or Wii U version, because they receive the same amount of money from you. Higher sales in PS360 even validate this decision.

The logic of marketing people is amazing..

WiiU has a games drought.. those gamers are looking forward to good AAA games.. so even if the install base is 4 million a good part will get this game.. including me.

No... just delay it and launch it on all platforms, pissing off potential WiiU buyers.. who want the game now... I mean wtf

This game is finished and won't cost any money/resources anymore developing, just release it, instead of collecting digital dust..

amazing.

I am still buying this on WiiU btw, supporting the people who worked so HARD to make this!

If you want to talk about software sales then check the software sales data we have been provided thus far. Wii U may sold consoles (I don't even want to discuss that). But it's games are not buning any charts.

Don't get me wrong, this in no way justifies Ubi's decision but it does make sense.

Yes, the precedent of the system's current situation could justify this. But there are tons of breakthroughs on these types of platforms, and assuming the situation with Wii U will be static and stay like this is naive on companies like Ubisoft. A few years ago, a game named Demon's Souls was heavily imported by fans, later to be released internationally and praised via word of mouth about its qualities. For such an unknown game to have a rather noted following now all started by fans, consumers who jumped into the title and let the word spread. Companies assumed it wouldn't sell, but word of mouth has a lot of power. For Wii U owners dry for games, who can genuinely say word of mouth wouldn't have helped the title trickle about with more sales? I think companies rely too much on focus groups and over-analyzing of the market which had led to games, and decisions with said games, to be questionable now and again over the years. I figure this will be one of 2013's more interesting case studies. We'll see if this has any indication of how the title will fare, especially on Wii U compared to other platforms.
