UFC 231 OT

Background:
A UFC Featherweight Championship bout between Max Holloway and Brian Ortega is expected to serve as the event headliner.[2] The fight was originally scheduled to take place at UFC 226, but Holloway pulled out due to "concussion like symptoms".[3]

In the co-headlining slot, a bout for the vacant UFC Women's Flyweight Championship between former UFC Women's Strawweight Champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk and former UFC Women's Bantamweight Championship challenger Valentina Shevchenko is expected to take place. If victorious, Jędrzejczyk will become the first woman to win titles in different divisions.[4] They met previously in amateur muay thai and kickboxing, with Shevchenko winning all three encounters.[5] On October 2, the UFC announced that Shevchenko would face Sijara Eubanks at UFC 230 instead, as that event was in need of a headliner.[6] The fight between Shevchenko and Jędrzejczyk was put back together a week later though, as a fight between then UFC Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier and Derrick Lewis wound up filling the headlining slot at UFC 230.[7]

A lightweight bout between Gilbert Burns and Olivier Aubin-Mercier was previously scheduled to take place in February 2018 at UFC on Fox: Emmett vs. Stephens. However, Burns was pulled from the pairing during the week leading up to the event after medical officials deemed that it was unsafe for Burns to cut the necessary weight for the 156-pound limit.[8] The fight has been rescheduled for this event.[9]

A middleweight bout between The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 3 heavyweight winner Antônio Carlos Júnior and The Ultimate Fighter: Nations middleweight winner Elias Theodorou was initially scheduled to take place at UFC Fight Night: Santos vs. Anders. However, Júnior pulled out on August 28 due to injury.[10] The pairing was then rescheduled for this event.[11] In turn, on September 13, it was reported that Júnior was forced to withdraw as a surgery is required to treat the injury that caused the first cancellation of this bout.[12] On October 1, it was reported that Eryk Anders would replace him.[13]

A light heavyweight bout between Jimi Manuwa and Thiago Santos was expected to headline UFC Fight Night: Santos vs. Anders, but the bout was scrapped due to an injury suffered by Manuwa.[14] The pairing is now expected to take place at this event.[13]

A featherweight bout between Renato Moicano and Mirsad Bektić was expected to take place at the event. However, Bektic was forced out of the bout due to an undisclosed injury on November 15.[15] In turn, Moicano is not expected to compete and instead will serve as a "replacement" option in the event that one of the headlining participants is unable to fight at the event.[16]

John Makdessi was expected to face Carlos Diego Ferreira at the event. However, Makdessi pulled out of the fight on November 28 and was replaced by returning veteran Jesse Ronson.[17] However on December 4, it was announced that Ronson was pulled from the bout after Ontario Athletics Commission officials deemed that he was too heavy to safely make the lightweight 156-pound limit.[18] He was replaced by newcomer Kyle Nelson.[19]

Main card I think can go either way. Prefer Max to win though, Shevchenko I think will destroy Joanna.

Sorry for the late post, literally done in 20 mins and wiki and Google get some credit.

Max is on a tear, I’m expecting him to win but Ortega could give him a good fight. I mean, I wouldn’t be surprised if I woke up (I’m in UK) to hear Ortega was the new champ. I’ve just seen less of Ortega than Max. Co-main should be a good fight, I’m a bit Shevchenko fan so I’m rooting for her.

Thanks for posting!

Thanks for posting this.

How much is the cost in US?

$64.99. It didn't used to seem like an unconscionable price range for a UFC PPC buy in, but we have so much non-PPV MMA flooding the market these days. For a PPV card you wanna specifically care about one or more of the fights and preferably either split the PPV with buddies or hit up a sports bar that's licensing it.

Not bad for how many fights you get imo. I've paid as much for boxing. And I don't think the card is this deep.

I haven’t been following but I assume everyone made weight and is healthy for the main and co main. These two fights should be great. I really like Max so I’ll be pulling for him but can see it going either way.

Im curious how Joanna will look too. I hope she comes out strong and we get a great fight mainly.

Musky_Cheese Musky_Cheese You can get it for 10% off on PSN usually if you have plus which I’ve done a couple times. It works pretty well.

Max is a brawler, but ortega can counter so should be good. Ortega hasn't had enough tough fights to prepare him IMO, so could go either way.

Shevchenko and Joanna are friends, but shevy has beaten Joanna three times in muy Thai, so think its an easy prediction. You never know though.

I'll watch prelims and early, you get some decent fights.

Wow.. talk about a main event..

Holloway's gas tank is so impressive, he's going to be hard to beat in that division.

Just saw two championship fights, damn. Shevchenko was easy winner. Max was a beast. Max v Khabib next mega fight I hope.

Gonna watch the rest of the card and prelims.

Max is so good. UFC has a couple of champs now where there seems to be a currently insurmountable gap between the challengers and the champion. Notably Max and Woodley.

The output and accuracy from Max is really impressive, nobody would beat him via decision imo.

Great start to the ppv. Don't mess with people with hammer tattoos, that's for sure. Nelson did well against cowboy. Overall a good ppv.

Max I can't see losing, not enough competition, same with Woodley as mekes said. If Tony Ferguson goes down and khabib moves up, those would be pretty interesting fights.
