Universal eyeing Dwayne Johnson for Wolfman, Angelina Jolie for Bride of Frankenstein

First tragedy, then farce.
Are they just doing this nonsense because all of these characters are public domain? I don't understand any of this.

The Universal Monsters were early Hollywood massive hits that interwove with one another a bit.

They still have a decent shape cult interest in the original Universal Monsters to this day.

Universal has continued to utilize these properties off and on throughout the decades with the mummy movies being the biggest break out hits.

I think there is a zero percent chance this works for them. But when everyone else owns the big tent poles, you go with what you got I suppose?

Hollywood currently has a collective hard on for shared universes that bring people to the theater to see B and C tier efforts because they tie back into the tent pole. In a way it makes more sense than just churning out sequels because this (in theory) allows you to cash in on lower budget spin-offs and *really* cash in on the big Avengers style team-ups. The problem of course being you need access to IP that justifies this, and developing a new universe would require someone in Hollywood to stick their neck out. Thus, here we are.

When this craters I'm expecting them to go all out on the Fast Franchise as a shared universe with the side characters getting their own films. The rock has kind of hinted at such.

Should just release Monster Squad 2 tho.

Angelina? Yes

The Rock? Hahaha no. Even if their Wolfman movie is just a reskinned action flick, he isn't that good in pure action movies. Even in the Fast films, his part is starting to become incredibly indulgent. Good action scenes, but every other part with him makes me groan. The Rock in action comedy parts, I can swallow. But he's laughable in semi-serious action roles. So...what is the tone of these movies? Cause I'm trying to picture a Wolfman pitch where he fits, and I can't see it.

When the Mummy bombs to a similar to degree that King Arthur did are they still going to pursue this nonsense?

Thing is, it could totally work. But not like this IMO. Go Gothic, more horror, more thriller, like Penny Dreadful.

These could be fun action movies, but I feel the monster stuff is just going to seem more like window dressing than anything substantial or unique

Penny Dreadful pretty much did the shared universe thing 1000x better than anything Universal can come up with. Damn shame they never got around to the mummy storyline they hinted at.

Yeah, a lower budget horror universe aimed at the paranormal activity market with shared Monsters and Monster Hunters could make bank with no name actors and lighter CG budget.

Would also be true to the source material. Instead well get Cruise making MI movies against Wolfman. It could work, but it feels dumb.

Preach! I miss Penny Dreadful and its gothic misery porn.

Whatever happened to that Rampage adaptation Johnson was attached to anyways?

Filming right now.

According to the Hollywood Reporter article, Universal are very nervous that The Mummy is going to disappoint, and thus potentially sink all these plans of theirs into the ground. I'm sure they're concerned about having another Dracula Untold situation on their hands.

Rock yeah Angelina no. Ever since Wanted I have not wanted her in a single damn movie. Still salty about no Salt sequel.

But... Salt came out after Wanted.

Just being Benecio Del Toro back and do a soft reboot.

I'd rather cast The Rock as the Creature from the Black Lagoon and Crispin Glover as the Phantom of the Opera

Wolfman's second act was fucking amazing. The first was alright, but I didn't like the final act very much.

Talking about the flick with Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins

True same outcome though. Still won't watch her movies anymore. Salt crept in their for me as a good spy/thriller. Oh well.
I have a personal issue with Angelina that makes it difficult for me to watch her movies.

I would freaking kill for a redo of the Benicio/Hopkins wolf man movie from the director of the witch tbh

I love that setting and time period and it seems to be disappearing from this monster universe entirely. Deserves a shot again by a good director and writer

Don't want the Rock as Wolfman. Him being involved signifies a certain direction for the film and it'd be a direction I don't want.

Honestly, The Rock being involved in something nowadays is a not an optimistic sign for me, after all the crap he's been in the last year or so.

Tom Cruise being a random dude can't be the full story. He has to be Van Helsing right?

The Mummy trailers have all been showing that he has some juju going on. The curse that brings the mummy back does something to him. He "survives" the plane crash and it shown to be extra durable.

I'm hoping Mummy succeeds. I need this franchise to pan out because the cast is too damn good.

Maybe the can bring back Brendan Fraser as The Alimony, the Thanos of the Dark Universe.

Things that were good about Van Helsing:

-The werewolf transformations.
-The werewolf design.

Things that were not so good about Van Helsing:

-Everything else conceivable.

You're forgetting Kate Beckinsale is leather.

I was eleven years old when I watched this, and she did things to me

What makes Dark Universe intriguing is that — unlike with DC and Marvel — the budgets of the films will range dramatically and could even include low-budget forays. For instance, sources say Universal-based microbudget horror producer Jason Blum has expressed interest in tackling a low-budget monsterverse outing.
This sounds quite a bit more appealing.

Think they might be getting a little too ahead of themselves, but we'll just have to wait and see how The Mummy reboot performs at the box office.

At some point during the meetings to set up this dark universe you just know that someone had to bring up a potential Fast crossover.
