New thread for new news.

Looks like The Wachowskis are bringing in Hollywood talent aka their friends for their first attempt at TV (or e-TV aka Netflix).

JMS & The Wachowskis' 2015 Netflix scifi series Sense8 is currently being shot in San Francisco with plans to also shoot in Chicago, London, Iceland, Seoul, Mumbai, Berlin, Mexico City and Nairobi as well, with a multiethnic cast that includes Naveen Andrews, Daryll Hannan, Doona Bae, Freema Agyeman, Brian J. Smith, Tuppence Middleton and more.

JMS has announced he will shoot the London and Iceland scenes, while The Wachowskis are currently shooting in San Francisco and will most likely handle the Chicago shoot as well as it is their home town, one of them lives there, they have their postproduction facilities there, most of their films are set there, etc.

Now, imdb claims V for Vendetta director James McTeigue and Cloud Atlas co-director Tom Tykwer are attached as directors as well. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2431438/fullcredits/

Assuming the info is legit, German director Tom Tykwer will likely handle the German shoot of the series.

Now, while I cannot absolutely verify the news, there's another source that includes their names as well: http://connection.ebscohost.com/c/articles/95785647/charted-territory

And finally, composer Johnny Klimek, who is a long time collaborator of Tom Tykwer, composing music along with him for the latter's movies, has put Sense8 on the list of projects he has worked on and lists Tom Tykwer as one of its directors. Meaning Tom Tykwer is practically confirmed as both co-director and co-composer of Sense8.

tl;dr Tom Tykwer is one of the directors of Sense8, will also compose the music. James McTeigue also one of the directors according to imdb, verification: pending.

My bodeyes and now ears too! are ready.
Cloud Atlas' OST is one of the very best of 2012.

You could have just said McTiegue and Twyker, considering the W's themselves were directors of Cloud Atlas (which makes the thread title kind of confusing) heh.

I believe we can add to the production crew Cloud Atlas' and Jupiter Ascending's two times (and back-to-back!) Academy Award winner John Toll as the Director of Photography:

Here's a really good pdf featuring some of his work: https://www.dropbox.com/s/f3n18wl6louqkw3/JohnToll_document(ipad_version).pdf HHNNNNNNNGGGGGG!

edit: Hugh Bateup, art director/production designer of every single Wachowski movie since The Matrix also part of the production according to imdb.

The above picture is from the Chicago shoot, but as seen bellow Toll photographed the San Francisco shoot as well so he will likely stick around for the entirety of the Wachowski directed parts.

Sense8
Production Company: Unpronounceable Productions
Director(s): Lana & Andy Wachowski
DoP: John Toll

This is a new show directed by for Netflix.

We were shooting on the 290mm side of a

24-290mm so the Libra head was requested for the techno.

Hiro Narita operated the head and I was solo on the crane.

Thanks Peter! You've always been super supportive and I can't fully express my appreciation in words. Big hugs when I see you next.

Firstly, Daniele Massaccesi is A Camera and regular Steadicam Op on "Sense 8." He helped me get a feel for what the Wachowskis liked and answered any questions I had. John Toll was also very helpful and informative. Both a pleasure to work with.

For this particular scene they required a female operator, due to the strict rules of the Dykes on Bikes club in San Fran. The stunt coordinator and vehicle owner worked with me on our prep day. All of us making sure I was safe and comfortable on the bike. Speed rail with cushion was beyond important. I was told I didn't need it since the parade was only 15min. I pushed for it anyway and I'm glad I did. Ended up driving around on it for two hours.

Camera was F55 with Fuji 19-90 with FIZ. We played between 50 & 90 but mostly at 90... so that was fun. Aileen, my first AC was amazing. Kudos to her on a job well done. Aside from my rig almost being taken out by a badly aimed fire hydrant hose, it was an amazing time! Pride weekend in San Francisco was an unforgettable experience in itself.

Thank you to all you ops for all the useful information you have shared.

We're now getting updates that the project's DP is now shooting at more than one location for the multi-location show. :lol

It's not as silly as you make it. Originally it was said they would shoot the show simultaneously in the various different countriess using the local production teams which means they would need multiple DPs, like in Cloud Atlas. The plan must have either changed or been delayed since they seem to be doing one location at a time so far, so I'm pointing out that John Toll has handled both the SF and Chicago shoots. Will he handle the London, Iceland, Korea, etc?
My guess is no.
Stay tuned in the thread as we find out!

Tom Tykwer and James McTeigue's involvement officially announced!

And finally the official show credits:

Creators: The Wachowskis
Other writers: JMS
Episodes: 10
Directors: 2x Wachowskis, 2x JMS, (1?) Tykwer, (1?) McTeigue which leaves ~5 episodes to be directed by unannounced directors. As I understand these are going to be local directors in Korea for the Korea centered scenes/episode, Indian ones for the India focused episode and so on.

edit: release date: 2015.

Add another frequent Wachowski collaborator to the mix; Steve Skroce is doing some of the show's storyboards. http://www.aintitcool.com/node/68084

BUG: Is there anything else in film or comics that you're involved with at this time?

SS: I've got a couple irons in the fire comics wise, but nothing i can announce. The last few years I've pretty much been working for the Wachowski's exclusively. Started on CLOUD ATLAS and then I went from that straight into JUPITER ASCENDING and then I finished up DF and now I'm been doing some storyboards for the Wachowski's and JMS's new Netflix show SENSE8. That's been a really cool experience.

And in case you don't know; he doesn't mention it but he was the primary storyboard-er for The Matrix trilogy.

This is not much relevant but I just wanted to put it somewhere. Finally I have an answer on why the Wachowskis abandoned Bill Pope for new cinematographers (with the one sticking with them being John Toll): http://collider.com/bill-pope-cosmos-ant-man-interview/

You also worked with the Wachowskis on The Matrix films, and there work is also so incredibly visual. Did they ask you to work on Cloud Atlas, or would you work with them again?

POPE: I would, but I haven’t worked with them since The Matrix. The Matrix 2 and 3 was such a physically and emotionally hard project for all of us, and we just burned out. We all acted not as our most evolved selves. There would have to be some sort of reconciliation. We would have to man-up.

Sounds like they had a falling out. Oh well.
