VGLeaks: Durango GPU detailed

Thanks. So it gets more complicated? Wizard jizz? Is MS pulling some kind of PS3 in terms of complexity?

Not that complicated no. Fixed function units to mitigate weaknesses(as much as possible) in the large ram/slow ram system they chose and also adds a couple unique features. A couple cool things reside within those DMA's that work in concert with the system like the free tiling, and lack of competition for the units in regards to another part of the system choking. The hint that much of this is automatic is where it gets interesting. How automatic and what parts are? MS has good tools and its obvious this is a planned addition not a reaction. So the overall plan seems to be that any added hardware mitigates something and adds some functionality that is somewhat unique as well which makes sense due to the foundation this is built on. The real question is unique versus complex and how they measure out.

It also seems like these are somewhat incorporated with the display planes and how they work but that's a bit obvious.

Move engine 0 is shared between the title and the system. During the system’s GPU time slice, the system uses move engine 0. During the title’s GPU time slice, move engine 0 can be used by title code. It may also be used by Direct3D to assist in carrying out title commands. For instance, to complete a Map operation on a surface in ESRAM, Direct3D will use move engine 0 to move that surface to main memory.

Does this suggest that a running title won't even have full access to the GPU? The OS will take a slice of the GPU as well as reserving cores from the CPU?

I don't think so...I think its just saying that 1 out of the 4 move engines will be unavailable to games some of the time?

This is what is worrying. The next xbox seems to have been poorly designed .Just think about what they had to come to try to overcome the bottlenecks or weak GPU.
Maybe I'm wrong, but you were not one of those who argued that MS was developing a powerful console as well as new exclusive??

Yes, they are sharing a move engine and thus part of the GPU. The system has to be able to overlay system info on top of the screen, thus it has to render stuff. It must be similar now, both systems can overlay system info on top of the game.

Looking at the move engines and the stuff Lionhead pushed over a year or so ago(virtual Texturing engine and demo they showed) this is more interesting now than I thought.

Page 25 is where he begins really hitting on it. Corrine seemed to think it was one of the big future ways of doing things as well.

Well it is appearing more and more like it was incredibly well designed for some very particular things. Might not gel with us but things like the move engines not only overcome a bottleneck they actually assist in things like VT and so forth.
And yes and yes.

Durango is a cheeseburger. Orbis is a double cheeseburger. Titan is a 5 course meal.

More like Durango is a double cheeseburger. Orbis is a double cheeseburger with pickles, ketchup, mustard, and lettuce.

Titan...not being in a closed system, is the above in a combo with a drink and a small dessert.

Kinect processing done in the GPU?

Most probably part of it, yes. Actually according to publications from MS research, the current kinect already uses the GPU to recognize body parts in the depth map, since it's a heavily parallelized task.

Why did people think that the Xbox3 GPU was a HD7790?

We already know that the Xbox3 GPU is custom made & it's not GCN

GCN GPU's have Compute Units with 64 Vector Units & 1 Scalar co-processor

The Xbox3 GPU has Shader Cores (SC) with 16 Quad-Core Vector Scalar Processors

now the big question is how well will this design work.

They are the same, MS just renamed the GCN nomenclature.
