Videogame facts that blow your mind (SuperMarioBros. SHOCKING SECRET INSIDE p #70)

There's a secret super creepy gameover screen in the original arcade version of Mortal Kombat, and it happens very rarely. I've only seen it happen once on my mk cab, and i own like 4 revisions of mk1

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgFG-_ZaEZI&feature=related

I was searching for this on Youtube a week ago, haha. I always love the first Mortal Kombat because it has such a great atmosphere, no other game (not even it's sequels) have been able to recapture it.

So Link's Awakening DX has quite a few hidden Easter Egg songs in it (you know entering ZELDA on the file select for a song there, hanging about in one screen for a few minutes for Totakeke's songs, the other Totakeke's song on the file select).

Did you know about the ones exclusive to the monochrome version and the French and German versions at that?
LOLO for the French version (in the DX version this is the ZELDA song...and ZELDA does nothing...)
and
MOYSE for the German version (in the DX version this is just the Totakeke's song which is why I got so confused).

Speaking of Moyse. Reading the interview found through google (here) back in February 2001 the entire NOE marketing team was fired by NCL (I think he was on Holiday at the time). The reason was poor performance, I think decline in Pokemon sales was the breaking point (we got Gen 1 late 1999, and Gen 2 wasn't out until April 2001...so yeah you can see why sales would fare badly compared to America). I don't know why I get a vision of Yamauchi personally flying to Germany in a fit of rage...

The metroid load out makes me think it was for testing on the boss and was just left in, amazing that it's only been found out lately.

If you want your mind to be blown with fonts, just look around for Gunplay.

I thought it was pretty well known that was a huge inspiration for the game. Ueda made the boxart himself and he thought it to be the perfect homage for the man that partially inspired him to make the game.

While we're on the subject of audio being re-used in games..

While most die-hard Earthbound fans have heard all about the legal issues that prevent Nintendo of America from being re-releasing Earthbound in the states,
some of you might not be aware of how deep Nintendo's plagiarism with that game extends.

Here's the music that plays in Moonside, a city in Earthbound.

And this is Keep On Laughin', by Ric Ocasek

As you can see, all Nintendo did was sample about six seconds from the song's intro, added a bit of reverb, slowed it down, and then tried to pass it off as an original composition. Other than that, there is literally nothing changed from the Ric Ocasek recording. Not a single note was added, just a looped sample of a copyrighted song. Blatant plagiarism at it's best! It's no wonder Earthbound fans can't catch a break.

STEALTH EDIT:

In the same vein as this, the You Got a Star! chime from SMG1&2 is the first note from the Ice Cavern theme from Ocarina of Time.

Damn you people are awesome.

There's no denying that that is too similar to be a coincidence, but I wonder if that's really what's keeping the game from being re-released. The first Mega Man (and Donkey Kong Country 2, for a Nintendo example) also have pieces that were clearly heavily inspired by copyrighted work, but they made it to Virtual Console fine.

There was a little thing in Ocarina of Time that some people missed. It was mentioned in antoher thread three years ago,but no one seemed to post it here.
If you walk to the backalley in Hyrule Town after Zeldas Escape and before getting the Master Sword, you can talk to a wounded soldier, who dies shortly after.

Video here.
Some of you may know that, but there are surely some who don't.

@Prime Blue:Now that is awesome.Mind = Blown.

Wow, I never even knew about that. It's odd to just see him die in broad daylight while the happy music keeps playing.

I have to confess that I had no idea about this one and, even more embarrassingly, I'd never even heard of de Chirico. Think I'll be looking in to his work in the near future.

Thanks to sykoex for posting this.

These must be worth a very pretty penny.

Yes, I think so too. I can't seem to find anything on the net about these exact cards though (will check out the link suggested earlier) - I did find one stack of old (not similar) Nintendo cards on ebay that was beat up and in horrible condition for around $300 :S

You know this thread would be half it's size of a ton of morons would bother to read it first. Half the thread is the same shit reposted. Sometimes as little as a post or two later even though that first post was made months earlier.

So luckily I finally finished reading it and I have to say that some of the stuff posted really does blow my mind. A lot of Mario Brothers related stuff really does. The boo laugh, cloudbush, and the powerup/end level music stuff really stands out though.

Also this Totaka's song stuff is cool as hell. How people find it's location in some of these games is amazing. I wonder how many other people who work on games have a little trademark like that they put in every game they work on be it a song, piece of art, etc.

To those who managed to blow my mind I give you props.

Just realized Moblins look like they have painted fingernails and are giving the double finger.
Even with that in mind the sprite better resembles what it's supposed to be:

Despite Irem canned Disaster Report 4, people are talking about the last game from 2009. Surprisingly the story of DR3 takes place in March 2011, a massive earthquake hit the metropolis (presumably Tokyo), follow by flooding. Conincidence?! Now I figure out why Irem had to cancel Disaster Report 4, it's too damn scary accurate or they have some sort of foreseeing ability.

http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%B5%...1%AE%E6%AD%8C-

of course it's coincidence. and aside from the date, the rest isn't right. tokyo survived mostly unscathed and without any flooding.

do you know why they make games about earthquakes in Japan? because Japan gets more than it's fair share of Earthquakes.

but 'creepy coincidence'? sure. but stress coincidence.

it's no different to the twin towers being missing in Deus Ex.

Did you read the Chatlog? The story of the French girl who translated Secret of Mana is awesome.

She showed porn magazines and a vibrator to Takashi Tezuka (one of the Zelda designers) since she thought it would be funny but got fired immediately after she returned home. The Nintendo guys didn't like that kind of humour.

Full chatlog:

I loved that guy, especially the comics. Club Nintendo was part of my childhood :)

I never noticed the differences in the backgrounds every time I played those games.

I had figured Knuckles' story in S&K came after Sonic had left because of the foreground aspects (ghosts already being freed, Mecha Sonic), but I hadn't noticed some of the background details, especially the ocean in Angel Island Zone.

Getting the 7 emeralds ending is a bit of a pain, since it means you can't hit any of the hidden rings starting with Mushroom Hill, with that scene of Knuckles peering out from the wall. If you do, you basically "trade them in" at the shrine.

s3k is full of tiny changes, that list is only half of them related to knuckles.

It shows how much love went into the series back then, sonic 4 no matter what sega says is no true sequel.

The opening scene of Conkers Bad Fur Day is a reference to A Clockwork Orange

This is very disappointing. Not the reference, but that people didn't know this already. It's a parody game of different varieties. Did you know the end boss
is from Aliens, along with the yellow mech thing you walk around in?
Did you know the bank scene in the lobby is from the Matrix? Did you know the beach scene is from Saving Private Ryan? That the head over the fireplace in the game is that of Banjo from Banjo Kazooie? Geez, seriously, most non-mindblowing thing I've ever seen.
