I'm pretty sure "4" is considered bad luck because death is like, "shi", I think and so is one of the ways to write 4.

The character in my avatar incidentally has a 4-phobia, lol.

"Shi" being a way to say 4 in Japanese is based on the Chinese pronunciation, since this similarity (four and death sounding the same) exists in Chinese as well. IIRC this exists in Korean as well. 4 is bad luck for this reason in many East Asian languages.

According to tvtropes dot com, Nintendo purchased the rights to two pornos called Super Hornio Brothers and Super Hornio Brothers 2 for the sole purpose of making sure no one ever saw them.

This changes EVERYTHING!

This was uploaded by Perfo in the other thread and may be old news to some, but this is a good shot of Vincent's early designs.

*pic*

Looks like Magus got the Scythe instead.

Which reminds me of some old Squaresoft office photos I have:

You can see the same Vincent design on the desk.
Good to see there's a high quality version available.

I realized this searching for hidden items in Castlevania 1. When you stitch together all the screens of Castlevania it's form roughly looks like the map you see in the game.

I'm more interested in the fact that Dracula's final tower can be seen in the background right before that big drop. Cool little detail, NES games at that time didn't have a lot of memory for custom graphics like that.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but the Goombas in Mario are based on chestnuts, not mushrooms. Rocked my world.
Also, of course. Making the "goomnut" found by whacking the tree at Goombario's house or "Goomba Village" in Paper Mario is a clearly reference to this fact.

Actually, although their name means "chestnut people", they are based on shiitake mushrooms: http://iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/#/wii/nsmb/1/5

Iwata: By the way, is it a coincidence that the Goomba looks like a mushroom?
Tezuka: It's a shiitake mushroom!
Iwata: It's a shiitake? (laughs) So it's not a chestnut?
Tezuka: That's right. (laughs)
Iwata: But leaving that aside… (in a serious tone) The Goomba was really the last thing you made?
Tezuka: (laughs)
Iwata: That's really come as quite a shock to me! This is another thing I had no idea about! (laughs)

In SMW there are kuribons, which are more chestnut-like goombas, and goombas hiding in spiky chestnut balls, but the original goomba design is based on shiitake mushrooms.

Speaking of Shining Force, was it always intentional that when a battle starts, your character's attack or spells always hits in tune with the crescendo of the battle music?

You can make that go faster. It's always nice to to hum along and be all "Dah dah dah dah dah dah, dah dah *smack* dah dah dah dah dah daaaaaaah"."

Was it mentioned yet that the Four Swords Anniversary freebie that was given out during the Zelda 25th anniversary uses music eerily similar to Mario Picross during the initial Chambers of Insight levels?

*Almost* seems like a higher quality version of the Mario Picross tune and every time I load it up I immediately associate the two out of nowhere. I don't know, maybe not. :p

In Resident Evil 1, in the underground cavern with the boss spider, you can make him spit his venom at the door to erode the webs blocking the door rather than having to pick up the knife afterwards and take them off yourself.

Not exactly mindblowing, but I realized something about King Dedede.

2OXBUSP.jpg

First of all, he's not really the king of anything. He's kind of a usurper. He just charges in and starts taking whatever he wants and eating whatever he wants. In fact in Japan he's just called "DeDeDe Daio" which is basically "DeDeDe The Great". Could be an emperor, king, whatever. In fact most Kirby media states he's the 'self-proclaimed' king.

But I think he's a warlord. His robes are kind of strange and eastern-looking, but not very Japanese. His 'crown' is more like helmet with a tassel at the top.

All things considered I think he's supposed to be a caricature of a Mongolian Warlord. He's the Genghis Khan of the Kirby Universe.

Don't worry man, I got your back on this one, I think it's cool. I didn't realize the game screens followed the map that exactly, I remember thinking it wasn't to any kind of scale at all.

Is that actually a beak? Part of me thinks it's just stylized nose + lips.

Maybe he's actually a rabbit and his ears are hidden under his hat? It'd explain the little rabbit-ears symbol he's got.

Reminds me of something that happened to me when playing pokemon blue.

I was surfing the waters and all of a sudden gary surfed up to me and challenged me. We battled, and one of his pokemon was a missingno. Is this an actual glitch, or am I remembering my childhood incorrectly?
Well going by the old man glitch if you have PK character as your third, fifth and seventh slots of your player name the rival is one of the battlers you will encounter with that glitch. I think he'll have a glitched team which probably would include a missingno (most trainers via that do because it tries to load their 7th team and most trainers have less*).

*-I kind of want to check now since the rival might have more than 7 teams due to having 3 teams per encounter (one for each starter choice) and using that sprite for most encounters.

There won't be any surfing up to you though.

Spoilers for Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War (FE4) and Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 (FE5)

As most fans of the series know, FE4 is divided in two generations, the first of which ends on a tragic note with all the characters either dying, getting captured, escaping, or with their whereabouts unknown. The fate of several characters remains unknown even after you finish FE4 and play FE5, which is a mid-quel to FE4.

There is, however, an interesting scene in FE5 that may tell us what happened to a few of these characters. Check this image:

http://i.imgur.com/7HTCt8W.png

This takes place after you beat Chapter 4. The guys in red sprites are all bad guys, and they're in a secret room that went unnoticed by the good guys (this is from the map itself, the secret room is covered by a roof while you normally play the map).

What's interesting about this scene isn't the villains, though, but look at the four statues in the room. One of the villains in here, Veld, has the power to turn people into stone, and as it will be established later in the game, sometimes they turn their enemies to stone and keep them as trophies. This seems to imply these statues are indeed captured enemy soldiers, or, Sigurd's troops from FE4 Gen 1.

The statue on the top left is a female Swordmaster. The only one who fits this is Aira, so it's most likely her, as we never know what happened to her in FE4.

The one on the top right is a dismounted male Mage Knight. The only one that fits this is Azel. Given he is Alvis' young brother (Alvis is one of the main villains in FE4), it makes sense he wouldn't be killed, but they stoned him for whatever reason.

The bottom left one is rather odd. It's a dismounted female Mage Knight, but the sprite fits on Tiltyu (Mage Fighter) and Lachesis (Master Knight). It can't be Tiltyu, since FE4 establishes she dies between gens (Hilda tortured her so much she died of depression), so I guess Lachesis fits. An interview with a designer said that there was supposed to be a map in FE5 where several captured units have to be un-turned to stone, one of them supposedly being Lachesis, so that seems to support this theory.

The bottom right one is hard to figure out since it's a dismounted male cavalier, so a lot of characters fit. It could be Alec, Noish, Lex, or Beowulf.

Here's a neat one, credit to the FFwiki:

She actually has a face and design! By Nomura!

Care to explain ?

Who is this ?

Setzer's girlfriend Darill from Final Fantasy VI. It looks like they might have thought of making her a playable character, based on that superdeformed artwork.

Nomura designed Setzer, so it makes sense that he'd have desiged Darill too.
