After leaving, he and the Network quickly reach a settlement deal so he can live a comfortable life outside the dome. For the first year of free life he is swept up in a media frenzy and he gets to feel what it's like to be a celebrity. Ultimately he enjoys the feeling even though it's sometimes overwhelming and a hassle.
Eventually though he gets pushed out of the limelight as the Network announces they have procured the rights to a new reality show staring TWINS; getting ready to be born in the fall.
He had never spoken out about his 'imprisonment' in the dome because of how well he was treated after he left it. So no laws or anything were created to stop the Network from doing this again.
But ultimately he is less concerned about the well being of the Network's new stars and more concerned with his own status as a celebrity. He decides to write his autobiography in the hopes of recapturing the public's attention again. It takes him about 5-6 years, but finally 'Truman Show: The Novel' is finished. Unable to find a publisher, he uses money from his settlement to self-publish the book.
Upon release however the shocking realization comes that the public has moved on and is obsessed with the TWINS. Plus everything in his book has already been watched on tv, there's nothing new or interesting that he could have written. The book is a commercial failure; and what's worse, the Network sues him for breach of contract. The settlement agreement stated that the rights to his life's story inside the dome belonged to the network (mostly for merchandising purposes, including any books).
A lengthy court battle ensues which Truman ends up losing after fighting it for years. The Network successfully sues him into bankruptcy to protect it's Truman IP. Having no where else to turn, he is taken in by his childhood sweetheart Sylvia. She originally rejected him after he left the dome because he refused to speak out against the Network, but now he sees how right she was. They begin to make plans to take down the Network.
Over the years Truman finds out first hand what Sylvia went through as he discovers how powerful the Network really is and how hard it is to get their message out. Eventually though they get invited to go on a high profile radio 'shock-jock' talk show. The show goes well and Truman's name is on people's minds again, he quickly gets booked to go on a popular daytime talk show.
Leading up to the show, Truman struggles with thoughts of becoming famous again, the bug has never left him. He ultimately decides Sylvia's ideals are best and goes on the show as level headed as he can manage.
On the show however; disaster strikes, a crazed former Truman fan in the audience has snapped after hearing her beloved Truman speak bad about The Truman Show. She pulls out a gun and shoots Truman in the chest. He falls back in his chair, the last thing he sees is a spotlight from the set shining down on him. A smile creeps across his face as he closes his eyes.
The world which had since turned their eyes away from Truman were suddenly caught in an up swell of emotion over the incident. Whole nations mourn the loss of Truman; the Network takes advantage of this, controlling the media with soundbites talking about Truman's life IN the dome. He and Sylvia's message is lost in this media frenzy.
The Network takes the opportunity to release 'BEST OF' moments from the Truman show DVDs, a new flush of Truman merchandising takes over. Truman is post humorously a celebrity again, exalted to God-hood in the hearts and minds of the public. Statues, national holidays, religions (!) are founded in Truman's name.
Sylvia is forgotten and branded a kook by any she talks to. Even worse though, with the new Truman frenzy, the TWINS show plummets in ratings, the public only wants more Truman! The tide turning the TWINS show is finally dropped from the Network, the twins are thrust out into the harsh reality of the 'real world' @ 14 years old.
Media campaigns are launched; The Truman Show is coming back on the air starting from episode 1 (technology at the time allows them to digitally alter advertising within the show, allowing the Network another source of income). The public goes crazy! In the meantime the TWINS are adopted out to a nice family and receive a settlement for their time on the Network. Being resilient they recover quickly from the harsh reality that their childhood was a lie. They also don't have to deal with being thrust into the spotlight in the real world as the public is in a Truman frenzy.
The TWINS themselves actually get caught up in watching the Truman show over the years, and become the biggest fans of the show (having partly lived through it themselves). They eventually procure Truman's book (a rarity considering its failure on the market when it was released) and read through it. Being obsessed, they decide to track down Sylvia/Lauren, who was mentioned in the book and who the book was dedicated to.
After a lengthy search they find that Sylvia was murdered. However they track down some of relatives who hand over some of Sylvia's own writings. It seems she too was working on a book - 'The True Truman Show'. They read and discover the real Network and finally take off the rose tinted glasses of their childhoods. A new crusade is born...
Didn't intend to write that much, that's about enough for a sequel to The Truman Show. :lol
Maybe the 3rd movie would have the TWINS discovering the crazed fan who shot Truman was actually hired by the Network to carry it out and silence their former beloved star before his anti-Network movement got off the ground?
