WORLD'S MOST DIVERSE COUNTRY – METHODOLOGY

How do we define the world's most diverse country? We could use the percentage of people born in a different country, but this ignores all second- and third-gen immigrants. Indeed, as the BBC points out itself, Mayor Sadiq Khan wouldn't count towards diversity by this measure as he was born in the UK.

We could use total nationalities in a country but this also presents problems. The UK might have one person from every country in the world, but that doesn't mean it is diverse as a meaningful percentage of the overall population.

The two foremost studies in the area use ethnic fractionalisation, an approximation of the probability that two randomly selected individuals from a country will not be from the same ethnic group. This leads to a second set of problems: how do we define an ethnic group?

The first of the two studies (Alesina et al, 2003) uses an objective definition of racial groups, namely Encyclopaedia Britannica. Alas, there are some inconsistencies as Britannica published data for only 124 of 190 countries during the years covered, so Alesina et al completed the list with data from other sources.

The second study (Fearon, 2003) attempts to create the ”right list" of groups based on ”what people in the country identify as the most socially relevant ethnic groupings." Fearon's version covers fewer countries but has been acknowledged by Alesina as ”closer to what the theory would want". Fearon's list is therefore used for our ranking below.

This is why these "diversity" lists are so problematic and essentially meaningless. For instance, would you say the UK is diverse because it has a lot Welsh, Scots, Irishmen, and Anglo-Saxons living together?

That list seems to very roughly, and with the exception of the New World countries, reflect the history of the spread of humanity out of Africa, into the Middle East and Central Europe, and finally into Western Europe and Asia.

Perhaps it shouldn't be surprising that humanity has its greatest diversity in the place where it originated. I think I remember reading that many African tribes are more different from each other than any two other ethnic groups on the entire planet, i.e., two groups of Africans living in the same country can be more different, genetically, than Europeans and Asians.

They are using ethnic groups as means of determining diversity. African's have been around for a really long time and have very hard lined, rigid ethnic groupings. Therefore you can have up to fifty ethnic groups one country alone but not have those groups be all that genetically dissimilar.

A "nation" is nothing more than super-scaled tribe, and most of Africa didn't get old-definition nationalism (the unification of smaller tribes/nations into a larger one) until the mid to late 1900s.

That's not a measure of diversity. The methodology would allow a country of a single ethnicity to be the most "diverse", if they came from the same place. Having a high percentage of 1sr degree immigrants is not the same as diversity.

But at the same time, I'm pretty sure that means the methodology is seriously flawed. Self-defining as belonging to a group would be severely slanted towards federalist states, where people self-identify as their group over their country. Like Switzerland, or Indonesia, etc.
