Zelda X Dark Souls would be crushing for GAF. But regardless of that I know they'll have something. Bayonetta 2 awhile back was just nuts on GAF.

I was joking, but I'm honestly surprised I haven't seen a hack-job version of a handheld Wii U yet...

There is no one thing. They need an official big pricedrop. On top of that, they need 2 big new AAA IPs on top of 4-5 new games and not all 4-5 being recycled from the same 4 franchises they choose from (some but not all).
On top of that, show a steady amount of upcoming 3rd party games.

A fully 3D Pokemon with MMO for Wii U releasing in summer 2015, in combination with the option to sell the gamepad separately.
GAF would be shut down for a month- hell, something like that might even revive the WiiU itself. Especially with Mario Kart, and already SSB on their way. Nintendo could bundle the thing and finally start moving some real product. A man can dream...
Other things that'll shut down GAF:
Zelda HD (this is almost certain to happen)
Metroid Prime style game for Wii U (may happen)
X (probably going to happen)
Some crazy character in Smash like Ryu or Cloud (not likely, but we'll see).

Same here. Though someone made Gamecube and N64 handhelds using protective gamepad cases.
