So are shipping zealots more of a western thing than a eastern/Manga/Anime thing?
OH YOU BETTER BELIEVE the death threats are alive and well in otaku fandom.

The worst though is when western fans get upset at a japanese artist's shipping choices, and flood their twitter with toxic messages they can't even read.

I ship McHanzo now thanks to tumblr. /sorrynotsorry

I don't rightly know where is it more prevalent, but apparently the "zealotry" began with Star Trek's Kirk/Spock and the term itself originated from X-Files fandom.

It's fairly new for shippers to actually try and force a ship to be canon.

Hell, only ten years ago it was damn near forbidden for fandom to be even brought to the attention of creators. Now it's all demands and death threats.

How is that fun?
