Wkd BO 07•21-23•17 - Slam Dunk' for Nolan, Apes escape, not rough Girl's Trip, Luc

The international territories where Dunkirk is most relevant are the mature ones where studios actually make good ancillary cash. The UK, Australia, Germany, France, etc. It would be cool to see a $75M+ gross in China to boost the ww gross, but in the long run the difference between that and $30M in China isn't really a big deal.

Every dollar of UK box office ends up being worth more than $4 of Chinese box office over the lifespan of the film.

Great point.

BoxOffice-GAF might be in trouble come August. Summer had 3 big comic book movies one after another. August has Annabelle and Dark Tower as the big releases.

Legs watch is a thing now though. So you got Dunkirk threatening to go on a long-ass walk. People will pay attention for that & to see where Wonder Woman winds up.

I like to think in some alternate universe instead of betting on sports results and politics Vegas bets on BO performances for blockbusters

And alternate universe bronson is banned from every casino for trying to rig the game

Annabelle's probably going to be dumb fun or at least make near 10 times its budget like the first one did, which will be fun to see

Dark Tower I think everyone expects to bomba

As a persona aside, for all the grief I got for the Valerian review thread... thing is currently at 54% so early reviews seem more in line with later reviews than the middle reviews.

This is what I did for the film's listing on our site.

Thor 3: The Dark World 2 has a 100 minute runtime and there's apparently a backlash over this.

Oh shit people still using run time as a barometer for film quality in 2017? checks run times of last ten movies watched
90 minutes, bad movie
113 minutes, great movie
110 minutes, bad movie
141 minutes, good movie
136 minutes, good movie
~170 minutes, weird movie that's brainlessly enjoyable from an outsider's perspective, but I need to talk to more people on the inside about it.
75 minutes, disappointing movie
136 minutes, mediocrity
107 minutes, great movie
110 minutes, great movie

There, I've proven there's no fuckin correlation, but I assume the people who need correction on this issue don't actually read other member's posts.

But I saw two posts in different threads today that if a movie is too long or too short it's inept. It's like Goldilocks. A movie must fall in the 120 to 140 minute range or why bother.

The only movie I remember thinking 'fuck this is too long' was Braveheart.
Because I didn't know it was 3 hours long and got myself a large coke for my midnight screening.
By the time William Wallace was screaming freedom as torturers carved out his bowels I felt every ounce of his historical agony.
Usually if I feel a movie is too short, I don't hold it against it because it means the movie left me wanting more, a very positive quality.

People criticize Master and Commander for being long, but fuck was I mad when that ended. The shot of them in pursuit of the Acheron, I was expecting this big finale. But no, gotta leave me with blue balls.

Such a fucking amazing film.

Yes, Rachael Ray is the voice of Spam.

edit: that Ragnarok thread actually had me laughing really hard from about page 4 onwards.

I didn't realize she was. That's actually kinda clever.

And yeah, you HAVE to laugh at threads like those. Anything else and you go craaaazy:

You know a long film is good if you can sit there and watch a 3 hour film and still want more..
Wolf of Wall Street is just amazing, Leo was so robbed that year but got rewarded for being cold...

There are people who actually think it's too long? Fuck em. It's only too short in the fact that we deserved more MnC films and were robbed!

It's only two hours and 18 minutes. Who are these people.

Fuck these people.

PoliGAF is still the king. As an example, the latest thread has 1,723 posts since its reboot yesterday.

Outside of Toonami, PoliGAF, and sports, the bigger ongoing community threads with reboots include COMICS! and the Black Culture Thread.

If you want a monster of an ongoing OT thread, the Dragon Ball Super thread is it.
I remember the days when PoliGAF wasn't a big deal. It's called the Obama era and our politics weren't a complete and total shit show.

I miss those days. Can we go back to that again?

So Master and Commander is actually a good movie? I got it for a gift one year randomly and was like. It's Russell Crowe this is like bargain crap. I said thanks, but I was like ehh.

Maybe they just complained it was slow and felt long.

But whatever. Fuck those people. Right in the ear.

An absolute masterpiece. And the DTS Track on the DVD release is one of the most insane demo mixes ever.

Wolf of Wall Street is amazing. No matter how much I enjoy a long movie, I'm usually checking my watch after the 2 hour mark but that was one case where I didn't feel the need.

I saw it in theaters. I was too young to appreciate it, but I always think about rewatching it.

I've seen some movies under 90 mins that I could barely make it through... though to be fair MOST movies under 90 mins are under 90 mins for a reason
