fine, MS, fine.
prove that its worth it at E3.

I wasn't aware that "future-proofing" involved artificial shelf lives.
PS4 does all that, sans TV.Cloud stuff. Like updates without waiting, pause your game and then resume in the same place in another Xbox, Live TV I guess.
Don Mattrick, president of Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft
PS4 does all that as far as i remember.

E3 is going to be fun this year.So it's either always online required, or this "cloud" PR speak is all bullshit. Every 24 hour check in would not be able to use "the infinite power of the cloud."
"Its always Online"
"Its not always Online."

Well I'm out.
Microsoft, I will buy your console when internet is really good in like half a decade.
Anyone think that Microsoft might be using "the cloud" to extend the life of the platform? Performance increases all the time, negating the need for a console upgrade? That's going to be super awkward to develop around.
I'm also now worried that Sony had the same idea when they bought Gaikai.
They'll have a full cloud-streaming service within a couple of years. Sony are going the same way.Anyone think that Microsoft might be using "the cloud" to extend the life of the platform? looks like we will see the cloud computing stuff in action at e3
Gamers want the best experiences possible and they want a future-proof system
If only the games were future-proof. They'll be unplayable when the servers get taken down at the end of the generation.
It must be the future!
More inside the article.

Don Mattrick, president of Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft, told me that the decision to require internet for the Xbox One was driven by a desire to create a console unleashed from the technical limitations of today's not-entirely-connected society. Microsoft had a decision to make, he said; either create a console planted in the present or look to the future and create a device built on the concept that one day the internet will be as available as electricity or telephone service.
"Gamers want the best experiences possible and they want a future-proof system," he told Polygon.
"Now, with Xbox One, we're stretching the canvas again so creators can design for the cloud with every game they make," he said. "In the next decade, every great game will tap the power of the cloud to deliver richer, more immersive worlds. We have a great offline game system in Xbox 360 that gets better when it's connected. We could have made another offline console, but then offline would have been the lowest common denominator design point for developers. We chose to take the progressive path."
If I'm always online, I get more McDonalds Wrap ads plastered all over my dashboard! Everyone wins.
Thats their pitch. I read it as gimping single player and offline play ever more over time, even if their cloud talk is totally above board.Anyone think that Microsoft might be using "the cloud" to extend the life of the platform? Don't want this. Don't want internet mandatory for all games."In the next decade, every great game will tap the power of the cloud

Color me as interested. I don't think they'd set this online only infrastructure up only as a means to negate used games sales.
That was my initial reaction, but some computation can be offloaded to remote servers if it's done sufficiently in advance. I'm not a game engine programmer so I can't really explain how it would be implemented.Dude, the cloud is bullshit. It will have no affect on game performance. It's just a cover to make it sound like always online is a good idea. What are they going to say when PS4 games come out looking better than MS games? When multiplatform games run better on PS4?
... really? Like, really?Looks like you are online to me. Hating MS is the cool thing to do around here. Kind of like hating on Justin Bieber.

Do you guys think Xbone version of 3rd part games will be severly gimped because they must be made with the lowest common denominator in mind with the offline PS4?
