Yaoi is weird

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Why do so many guys like lesbians?

The impression I have always had is that yaoi fandom eclipses yuri fandom. Women just don't have as many options as men.

Yuri doesn't even have anything on par with bara, from what I understand.

In terms of yaoi and BL, I think it's more like yaoi= no plot, just sex

BL=plot plus sex or no sex. but overall there's plot

In the west "yaoi" is used to refer to all the m/m stuff. What we call yaoi here, they call BL over in Japan from what I've seen.

For example, something like Viewfinder is considered BL but we all just say yaoi here.

Bara= gay comics aimed for gay men. usually has bear types

The wiki page does a better job of explaining it

I think that's probably partly because of a kind of ghetto-ization, people who would appreciate yuri don't generally have to know that there's a term for it or join a fandom.

Wiki also says that bara is created by and for gay men, while yaoi is created by and for women. I don't know how much truth there is to that statement since I don't follow any bara manga, but I do know that most yaoi manga is created by women. Or at least the ones that I read anyway.

Most published Yuri is created by women too, right?

I think it's because women write fanfiction. A lot of women find two men together to be hot. Not as many find two women together to be hot.

If men wrote fanfiction, there'd be a lot more of the yuri type out there. Fandom wise anyhow.

Edit: Oh, yaoi is the same thing as PWP(Porn without plot)? I usually dislike PWP. I enjoy the hell out of plot.

Lesbian porn is a lot easier to find and acquire than gay porn until recently, so maybe women had to turn more towards fiction to get a gay male fix whereas dudes had a much bigger pool of content

edit: your ninja edit was pretty much my post :V

Gay porn is still largely aimed at men. (If you are talking about live action.)

True, that in itself is going to impact the fervor.

I only get into slash if it's realistic.

But honestly, we like men! Most of us! Hence, men doing it with other men is kinda hot. Just like for most guys, two girls doing it kinda hot.

That way it does sorta make sense, men watching two lesbians is mostly about the sex though. Don't think too many would be interested in an actual romantic story. (then again, I don't know what the yuri demographic looks like)

Well, in general, women like romance. We like sex, but we like it to be emotional as well. I, for instance, don't really like reading anything that doesn't have a plot. It just doesn't have as much payoff for me. But throw in a good plot, a heaping of UST, and some awesome sex? Amazing.

Ive encountered some good fanfics where characters just do that (naruto and sasuke), somehow still memorable, or maybe it was cause how the writer described it or ill never forget them doing it on the fire station and tattoo table.

And its good for manga one shots at least.

No plot? Does she ever pay for that pizza? THE SUSPENSE!

Naruto has always been a stones throw away from yaoi anyway.

Yeah, I've read them, sure. But I never enjoy them as much as I enjoy the plotty ones. And even PWPs have romance in them.

That's why I have to resort to fanfic to find good porn. I watch porn, but it's never that great me :/ Stuff looks painful, there's that obsession with fluids, and nothing makes sense! Even 'romantic' porn is kinda lame.

Ah ok, I can see that. Especially when it's just in written form. There wouldn't be much to go by without a plot

Porn actors that actually stay in character during a sex scene would be something I'd like to see as well. Usually it's all the same once the clothes are off.

It's absolutely fascinating how different Yaoi and Bara are. I can't think of any other comparison that could show more clearly the difference in taste between men and women.

Yaoi caters to women but that doesn't mean men can't enjoy it. Bara is just the other half of gay mens' tastes.

I dont know, there are females that like bara and dont like yaoi. Im not female, but I like yaoi and dont really like bara, I dont think it really highlights tastes that much.

In my experience with PWPs they tease you in the first chapter or so, but then 5 chapters later there's still no payoff. There's always too much plot or too much sex in adult fanfics, even they're labeled as such instead of just "romance". Its especially grating when the author focuses more on their own Mary-Sue than the actual characters.

PWP is usually a one shot with just porn. Stands for porn without plot. I enjoy long, plotty fic with UST and pay off at the end. And plot that DOESN'T just revolve around the romance. I enjoy me some drama. Sex for just the sake of sex gets boring after awhile to me. There's only so many ways you can describe sex before you've read it all.

And dear lord, don't get me started on Mary Sues. There is nothing I hate more in fanfiction than Mary Sues, so much that I will only read something that has 'OFC' (original female character' in the summary on several recommendations.

Gross. I never understand the attraction fangirls have for Cuminherhatch.

The character plays a part for certian, that mix of strength and vulnerability gets me every time, but I like men that look different from the norm. He hits all my buttons.

I don't really like actual yaoi. I like romantic themes, teasing and fanservice in comics/shows. For example, the third Evangelion movie made my fangirl meter run off the charts, and I love Clamp's Tokyo Babylon, but I wouldn't care to read porn featuring the characters. The lead-up is more interesting than the sex. And sex in yaoi comics is boring as fuck. Maybe because I lack a penis.
Do not you DARE put Saiyuki under any kind of yaoi. It has nothing to do with it.
Also, Goku is 500+ years old, and also
had a kind of a girlfriend for a while, however tragic that turned out to be
.
Uhh it's not really yaoi, but it has a TON of themes and a lot of it is done in a very female-gaze style. You must have seen some of Minekura's art depicting the group bound together. I've seen art of them handcuffed to each other on a bed. That and the fact that they're all interconnected and destined to be with each other is pretty damn homoerotic/romantic, even though they'll never have sex with each other (that would be pretty damn out of character). They have pure relationships with each other, and that makes it sexy. Same reason why people like Maria-sama ga miteiru, I think.

One of Minekura's other series is pretty explicitly BL, too, so it's not exactly a large leap of logic.

But but, Evangelion 3.0 didn't even have that many any shounen-ai undertone. I kept waiting and waiting and NOTHING HAPPENED! It's pretty tame, IMO, especially in comparison to the TV series. I mean all of those things look like what 2 friends normally do. Yeah, I'm definitely disappointed with the shounen-ai in Eva 3.0.

CLAMP....well, I only like Fuuma/Kamui pairing from X. The rest are not really interesting IMO. I wish they'd do a decent/good ending for Fuuma/Kamui. That's the only thing I want from them.

I wonder if they'll ever finish X. There are too many CLAMP pairings I like for me to list.

As for Eva, maybe it's weaker on its own, but the 3rd movie was one long fangirl session for me. All of the piano duets.... And that scene where
Kaworu takes off Shinji's collar and puts it on himself
was rage-inducingly perfect. Not as striking as his fate in the series, but it was pretty great.

But kaworu and shinji is always interesting

Shinji, what did you do to Kaworu's nose?

Extollere

Sucks at poetry
I like yaoi. But it has to be extremely hot and explicit. I don't want any flirting or romantic stuff. It also helps if one of the two dresses as a female and wears high-heels (but not necessary). Lingerie on boys can also be nice.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Extollere has no romance in his soul.

I'm fortunate in that I love both the mushy touchy feely parts of yaoi (and really, any kind of relationship story) as well as the sex.

Haha. The reactions in this thread are hilarious (as is some of the art).

I had to proof quite a bit of this stuff when I worked in comics and boy do I look at it with a clinical eye now. Some of it is actually pretty good... and some of it is bad bad bad.

I wish I am as happy as you are about it but to me Eva 3.0 is so disappointing in so many ways, including the shounen-ai part. I am so angry at how long they spend the film on stupid techno-babble or some gun/ship porn shot, neither of which I understand or care much. Meanwhile the plot and character development suffer big time.

Within Eva, nothing beats Eva 2.0 when it comes to shounen-ai fanservice:

Don't say that. I have an incredibly romantic spirit. I'm a sensitive person, man! It's just that there are certain things that I only want sexual gratification from and nothing else. And if they come in chokers and little shoes I can't be bothered with their stories or feelings in light of my blinding lust. I guess what I'm saying is my preferred flavor of yaoi is of the Po-Ju and related types.

I'm getting confused as to which culture and media are being talked about, but plenty of men make fanfiction comics (parody doujinshi) in Japan.

Text fanfiction is common on the Japanese internet also, but compared with doujinshi it's more frequently done in anonymous form and given away for free, so it's harder to tell the gender of the writers (some franchises that are thought of as male-targeted still have female followings, like Sword Art Online and OreImo), but we can guess that for largely male-audience properties like Queen's Blade or Strike Witches that the fanfiction authors are probably mostly male.
It's may be worth noting that Japan also has an active men's erotic novel market, both traditional (NSFW) and light-novel style (NSFW), whereas I get the impression that's virtually non-existent in English these days (?).

But Po-ju's masterpiece, Secret Journey, actually has a plot!

Don't get me wrong, it really wasn't a good movie. =< For everything the reboot has done well, there is a long list of problems.

That Kaji scene was hilarious.

I just wanted to say that I love how every one of those "wtf is up with ____," threads becomes a thread for proponents/fans of ____ in the end.

I believe that Fiction is talking about western fandom (the kind that was centered around livejournal for a while). There are large communities, mostly women, that do shipping and writing challenges and stuff like that. I think Inception had a large following for a while, to name an example. Heck, I think 50 shades of gray falls under this (it was Twilight fanfiction).

Reading about how fanfiction works in Japan is pretty interesting though. Thanks. =D I think the legality of it all is more suspect over in the west than in Japan, which is why it's a lot more closeted.

This is how FurryGAF started.

Are we witnessing the birth of YAOI GAF?

I started talking about western fandom yeah, cause some people were boggling over why women would like gay porn. Here, it's nearly exclusively women who write/make fan art/etc of it, and it's called slash.
