Most of my cousins and relatives think I'm too "Americanized," which is probably why I don't get along with any of them. But I can't help it when kids 16, 17, 18 are congregated outside restaurants, clubs, or cafes, with their stupid slick-back hairs, their shitty dress shirts/pants, while puffing a cigarette for the fourth time in an hour, carelessly throwing around the n-word, and ending every sentence in "bro."

Whenever I go back to the old country to see family I'm always reminded of this movie:

Thanks to the introduction of capitalism and free trade they've become more westernised than any of us.

It will also be debuting in US cinemas from May 2016.

Here is the official release trailer:

The premise is the United States purchased the entirety of a Soviet-bloc country's space program? At the height of the cold war?

This seems unlikely.

Yugoslavia was notorious for being Socialist but unaligned with the Soviet Union and even open to the West, which caused a lot of tension at the time. Not a lot of people had the balls shown by Tito when he shoved his middle finger into Stalin's face.

The premise sounds a bit exaggerated, but Tito's Yugoslavia was a rather peculiar country and found itself at some of the strangest corners of modern history. I wouldn't be completely shocked if there were some truth to it.

Yeah, some have accused Tito of indirectly ending the USSR and Socialist states with "the middle way", disproving the prevailing notion that Communist/Socialist states had to center around USSR. Depending on who you ask, Tito is either a hero for keeping peace in the Balkans or a monster for dictatorial suppression. Our family knew an old man who, when younger, used his military position to flea Yugoslavia. He fell more in the "hate him" camp.

Tito was a piece of shit, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of this is true. There were lots of weird things going on in Yugoslavia at the time.

Also, lol at Nixon - idiot.

There's so much still to be written about Tito's Yugoslavia. Most American's mock it because of their substandard automobiles, but we are talking about a country that despite chronic and massive underemployment managed to retain enough brain power to create indigenous fighter jets (including a 4th generation multirole plane that was only canceled when Civil War destroyed the country) and a massive underground military airport capable of withstanding the direct impact of a small nuclear weapon. Yugoslavia had a lot of engineering talent, and while it was a small country next to Russia and the Soviet Union, it had relatively close ties to countries such as France to make for its shortcomings.

Edit: It's rare, but sometimes YouTube's comments turn some golden nuggets

While Russians send dogs to space as a test, Yugoslavs send Americans :) ...

Dis we really win? The final (current) results are the Russians carting our arses to the ISS and we have no reusable crafts on the immediate horizon.

Interesting.

Allegedly -

The Germans also had secret space program(s) during the war. In the late 30's / early 40's the US Naval Intelligence discovered this by embedding 28 operatives which held German ancestry into Nazi Germany.

With the infiltration of covert Nazi programs by US Intelligence the debriefings uncovered the intel that there were two German space programs developing saucer shaped craft. One was civillian based and the other program by the Nazi SS. Both programs had been operational since the 1930's.

Oh, can't wait for this. My family is Kosovar and grew up in Yugoslavia (my dad graduated the year Tito died) so I often hear stories about that time. I hope it's translated to German so he can watch it as well.

It's a load of bollocks. The Nazis had a ton of oddball designs because they followed an extremely expensive "throw shit to the wall and see what sticks" strategy, but they only had a bunch of early concepts and ideas as engineering efforts were totally redirected towards the war effort early on. Same with the nuclear programme.

Germany's biggest "accomplishment" was the Silbervogel, which would have allowed the Nazis to bomb Americausing a badass spaceplane/sub-orbital bomber that remains totally amazeballs even if it never saw the light of the day.

As a Croatian by blood I may be biased towards this, especially because my father went to jail during Tito's regime - I don't hate on others tho. Don't wanna say that gives me some exclusive right to judge Tito better than others, but I don't like the guy for various reasons. Other than that, Yugoslavia during Tito's reign is a very interesting topic for anyone who loves history.

Yeah, I read that comment. Laughed out loud heh.. :).

Well it could be.

The problem is the article was written in 2011.

The source re the German saucer programs comes from Bill Tompkins who worked under US Naval inteligence during the war then at Douglas Aircraft Company from 1950 to 1963. Working in the think tank "Advanced design" working under RAND with German scientific advisor Dr Wolfgang Klemperer.

Tompkins testimony about the German programs seems unbelievable, but his credentials are not. Having been vetted by Dr Robert Wood who also worked at Douglas during that time frame. Tompkins worked on the Saturn program for NASA. The NOVA vehicles were something else.

Bill Tompkins claims that the American space programme was helped by Nordic looking aliens. From Alderbaran.

It is unfortunate that people will latch on to this type of information and ignore the more technical aspects which is more open to investigation. Especially with Dr Klemperer.

TBH Dr Robert Wood "didn't believe a word of it" until Tompkins recalled his experiencs at Douglas / NASA / and Naval intelligence.

I am always more interested in the technical datails than accounts of "off worlders" - having never met any.

Well I'm interested in hearing reviews about this movie and I wonder if anyone at NASA has made a comment on this assertion on their space program development yet.

I'm talking about sphere of influence, and no matter how you dress it up, it seems unlikely the United States would be able to penetrate that bloc so thoroughly it could cart away an entire space program, even a limited one.

Tito made his own brand of socialism called Titoism which opposed Stalinism. Stalin tried to get him to fall in line, Tito told him to fuck off. While publicly they pretended to be on good/neutral terms, the relations were actually pretty strained.
In the end the Soviet bloc had no influence in Yugoslavia with soviet sympathizers ending up on Goli Otok, Yugoslavia's Alcatraz.
Yugoslavia then became a founding member of the Non-Aligned Movement, a completely separate power bloc, whose aim is best described as: "That's a nice Cold War you have going guys, keep us out of that shit."
Of course, Tito did continue to build fairly friendly relations with the West, no doubt to piss off Stalin even more for shits and giggles.
