1) Valkyria Chronicles - One of only 2 new IPs in my list. Really original, great story, awesome music, and just really high production.
2) Ninja Gaiden 2 - Although I think Ninja Gaiden 1 was slightly better, this was definitely a great game.
3) DMC4 - SLAM DUNK!!
4) Lost Planet - Thought the demo sucked, but when I actually played the game it really blew me away. Some people found the mechs to be clunky, but I thought they were a blast.
5) Ace Combat 6 - Omg this game is gorgeous and with the flight stick its a ton of fun. A bit short though =(
6) MGS4 - Kind of low on the list simply because the gameplay felt dated and clunky. It really took video games to a whole new level with it's production values and story telling and I give Konami props for that.
7) VF5 - Although this came out way before any of the other next gen iterations of fighters, visually it beats almost all of them. Plays great too.
1. Tales of Vesperia
2. Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
3. Chrono Trigger DS
4. Advance Wars: Dual Strike
5. Kirby Super Star Ultra
6. Elite Beat Agents
7. The World Ends With You
8. Tetris DS
9. Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
10. Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen
If you want to kick out the remakes (CT, KSSU, DQIV), then Meteos, DoReMi Fantasy, and Metroid Prime 3 join the list. If you want to kick out the remakes and disallow DoReMi for being a VC game (though 2008 was its first time released in North America), then Mega Man 9 joins in.
I'm surprised to see the lack of mario and zelda on these lists.
Mine in no order:
WoW and its expansions
Twilight Princess
Galaxy
Bioshock
Portal
Braid
Gears
Gears 2
MGS4
Brawl
1. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (It's MGS so it's a little heavy handed and longed winded, but damnit did it make me cry more than once and has the best combination of graphics and production values ever. Would rather have a long detailed story than brief one)
2. Bioshock (The best use of the medium for storytelling)
3. The Orange Box (I cheated mwahahaha. Great multiplayer, Portal one of the most unique games ever, and HL2: Ep2 is Valve at their best)
4. Rock Band (The game I was waiting for since Guitar Freaks first came out)
5. Call of Duty 4 (The biggest additions to the FPS multiplayer genre since Halo, and a singleplayer that has enough twists and turns to make every COD since look like child's play)
6. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Didn't play Morrowind, so this was the first time I experianced a game like it)
7. Little Big Planet (Most innovate game this generation)
8. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (Great characters and humor, amazing graphics. The real Indiana Jones IV)
9. Grand Theft Auto IV (It's GTA. While the fun stuff was removed the emersiveness was raised)
10. Left 4 Dead (Valve again shows what time can do)
1. Wrath of the Lich King

4. Super Mario Galaxy

An honorable mention goes to LOTRO, which, despite two major MMO's being released this year and Wrath be on the tip of everyone's tongues, is continuing to kick ass and is easily, in my opinion, the best MMO out there next to WoW.
That said, I have yet to play Fable II, Fallout 3, Prince of Persia, or Gears 2, so the list could change once January comes rollin' around.

This thread has got three strikes against it--stupid list thread, original poster doesn't contribute to his own thread, and stupid exclusionary rule that doesn't make any sense ("no portables")
For what it's worth:
Tie Fighter (PC)

Legend of Mana (PSX ripped for PSP)
Final Fantasy VI (SNES emulated on PC or PSP)

6. Fable II
7. Sid Meier's: Civilization Revolution

Tetris DS
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
Geometry Wars 2
Super Mario Galaxy
Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen
Note the bias towards 2D, portables, and downloadable services.
1. Super Mario Galaxy- GOTY 2007 and possibly GOTF. The best Mario game ever released.
2. LittleBigPlanet- An overall amazing experience and without a doubt my GOTY 2008. It's a toss-up between it and Galaxy. The reason why I purchased a PS3.
3. Bioshock- I DO NOT like shooters yet I would consider this one of my favorite games of all time. THAT is saying something
4. Metal Gear Solid 4- This completely consumed a week of my life that I will never get back. I skipped classes, told my girlfriend that we couldn't hang out unless she wanted to play the game with me and I, for the second time (first was the Sonic Adventure 2 ending), cried at a video game
(The Raiden sacrifice scene in Act 4, I thought he was dead.)
.
5. Wii Sports- Revolutionary, fun, and got my Grandma addicted to video games.
6. Burnout Paradise- I would go as far to say that this is perhaps the greatest racing video game ever made. The amount of content in the 29.99 downloadable game is just OUTSTANDING. Props to Criterion for making an amazing game and perfecting the use of DLC.
7. Warhawk- One of the few games that I play super competitively online and it has kept me hooked since the first day I picked it up. Also, being a downloadable game is a plus.
8. Super Smash Bros. Brawl- Melee was my favorite game of last-gen so of course I adore this Smash Bros. iteration. Only reason it isn't higher on the list is because Geno, Mega Man, and a Square-Enix character didn't make it as playable characters. Seriously though, it amazes me people hate it so much.
9. Portal- This was a triumph. I'm making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS.
Wow, what a generation so far, seriously, WOW. This is without including portable games (many of which on the DS I would consider as some of the best games I have ever played). I never want this gen to end.
In no particular order:
Mario Galaxy
Assassin's Creed
GTA4
Halo 3

Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition
Resident Evil The Umbrella Chronicles
Final Fantasy IV (DS)
Devil May Cry 4 (PS3)
My list doesn't come from necessarily the top 10 best playing games, but also the experiences that come out of each title due to their story, characters, etc.
