This week sees the return of Rockstar and Take 2 to No1 thanks to the Gen 8 Tuesday release of ‘GTA V’.

Even before this week the 360/PS3 versions of this game held the record for highest-grossing game in a week (£94m total UK estimate – week 38, 2013) and also the all-time UK revenue record, reached after just 28 weeks to overtake ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’. In terms of all time units ‘GTA V’ was right behind ‘Black Ops’, so much so that just the Tuesday sales of ‘GTA V’ on PS4/XO were enough to also claim the all-time unit sales record in the UK.

The other big event launch from Tuesday was Ubisoft’s multi-format ‘Far Cry 4’, the first in the series to launch outside of the traditional Friday launch day. The original ‘Far Cry’ launched as a PC-only game in 2004 and the series has been growing in sales success with each iteration, with ‘Far Cry 2’ launched in 2008 (360/PS3/PC) and ‘Far Cry 3’ arriving in 2012 (360/PS3/PC). ‘Far Cry 4’ is by far the most successful in terms of week1 sales, which bodes well for the Q4 sales season. Activision’s ‘Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare’ (-41%) drops to No3 after 2 weeks at the top, followed at No4 by non-mover ‘FIFA 15’ from EA (+25%). There are more big new releases this week with a debut at No5 for EA’s ‘Dragon Age: Inquisition’, selling almost exactly the same in week 1 as 2011’s ‘Dragon Age II’.

2K/Take 2 climb 13 places to No7 thanks to the new Gen 8 versions of ‘WWE 2K15’ (+554%) and Warner climb 12 places to No11 thanks to the new Gen 7 versions of ‘Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor’ (+204%).

Why the hell is Xbone DA so low. MS has wasted a marketing deal there.

It didn't help it came out at a time when everything else got released (but still looks to have done half decent at least on the PS4) but making that marketing deal with MS may have just hurt the game's potential anyways.

How big is the gap between PS4 and Xbox One sold in the UK?

Probably still around 1.5:1, though there's not been any new numbers for a while (since Sept?). MS may have been outselling the PS4 in recent weeks (which we don't know how much by) but I doubt it's meaningful enough to have closed the gap by much.

Never really thought about it, but Sweden seems to like retail PC a lot. Though it could've have to do with the shitty pricing on Steam and Origin and the like for DD.

The console gap isn't anywhere near what some were predicting. I'm definitely seeing a slight boost for XB1 lately. Be interesting to see where we are after Christmas.

Did not expect GTA remaster to beat Far Cry. I guess I really underestimated the appeal for next gen versions. I thought the game would have been at least somewhat saturated after the crazy sales only a short year ago. With TLOU:R sales probably had quite a few totally new players but with GTA I imagine vast majority is returning players.

Excellent software week for PS4 as expected, pretty sure it will be reflected in hardware sales as well with PS4 coming back on top in weekly sales in UK.
The only surprise is Dragon Age Inquisition...a Bioware game, co-marketed on Xbox selling so much more on PS4.

How much DAII did back then?

The Xbox 360 version sold 64,000 (90%) units in its first month of sales, that's roughly about 100,000 - 110,000 (90%) units for all versions. I don't have a precise estimate for its first week sales.

Back when the PS4 hit 1m, the XBone was just under 700k sold. So since then MS has hit 1m, therefore it's safe to assume the PS4 has certainly sold 300k at the very least. So I think even if we low ball the numbers, PS4 would still have a good 300k lead and no doubt a little more. So 1.5:1 isn't beyond the realms of impossibility and the gap would still be the bare minimum 300k, even if the 1:5:1 ratio has closed any.

No, don't get me wrong, I agree that it is probably around that 1.5m/1m mark. It's just that a 1.5:1 is a lot closer than many doom merchants were predicting about a year ago.

Software sales points towards 1.4/1.5 to 1 sales gap - but i guess a lot of factors would have to be considered. The attach rate has been higher on the XBO though, hasn't it? That could point towards an even bigger hardware difference. Then again, maybe a lot of the recent sales are people buying their second console, and keeping to the PS4 for multiplats.

Minecraft Vita held in there for one more week. Blimey.

Tomodachi Life still doing great. Very glad to see it's been a successful new IP launch in the West.
It's got crazy legs. Smash Bros will drop out of the chart next week, but Tomodachi will still be there in the new year. I guess Tomodachi is better suited to the 'as enjoyed by netmums.com' audience of the 3DS.

Were people ever really expecting a giant gap in the UK and US? Those are really the only territories that MS can hang in.

Since neither of them charted it's probably hard to tell, but I wonder if Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA F 2nd outsold Sonic Boom.

I'd laugh pretty hard if it did. Niche JP import game (that's amazing) trumping Sega's prized IP, which they've run into the ground.

Why are people contesting accurate percentage differences...?

A 58:41 split of units in favour of the PS4 means that the PS4 version sold 41.5% more than the XBO version. The other calculations are also accurate.

What is it with GAF and percentage changes...

I don't know if you are making fun of the game, or its audience, or just netmums...

Eh. Year ago most people predicted that despite the bad pr MS had before the launch sales would be still pretty much equal in US and UK between PS4 and Xbone because of how much more popular X360 was compared to PS3. The gap is wider than pretty much anyone predicted. Rest of the world has also been bigger bloodbath for Xbone than most people thought.

That dragon age split is kinda crazy, especially the marketing deal Ms had.

I think the top 4 can be explained simply because ps4 has a bigger Base, but not sure if the splits reflect that. Kinda big.
