A month into the second year, and still no video playback/DLNA function for the PS4?

Compilation of sources. Shawn Layden recently said they want to get more frequent PS4 updates in 2015 compared to a few big ones as in 2014:
http://gamingbolt.com/sony-looking-at-providing-smaller-more-frequent-ps4-updates
Satoshi Hashimoto from the japanese firmware dev team said that support for mp3s playback from hard drive and other features are already being worked on but missed 2.0 for time reasons (so they chose to provide support for mp3s from USB first instead of delaying the feature completely):
http://av.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/series/rt/20141028_673283.html
In July a verified Sony employee said that DLNA was scheduled for Q1 2015, mp3 and videoplayback would come in late 2014 with mp3s first (unfortunately video playback didn't happen in 2014 but they're working on and it was clearly delayed).

So basically they are working on all these features, some of them missed 2014, there should be a big firmware update like Masamune in early 2015 (so I guess by the end of March?).
There will be more frequent but smaller updates this year switching back to the PS3 (and Xbox One) update model, while PS4 in 2014 had seasonal updates more like the 360.

Yep, just tried to gather them here.
From the first cite above: “We’re looking at 2015. Our concentration is going to be around continuing to provide two things. One is, from a hardware standpoint, we want to continue to innovate across the hardware. There are lots more features and benefits we can pull out of the PlayStation 4 hardware. It’s pretty well feature-proved to allow us to do that. We’ll continue to execute on that.” Feature-proved" means they have a list of coming features with the hardware designed/proved to be able to support those features.

March and September are Gnome and Webkit 6 month stable release windows and other projects try to meet the same windows. The PS3, Vita and PS4 use Gnome's GTKwebkit2 APIs which usually means New features usually show up in those same windows with stability updates between those windows.

WebRTC is needed for ooVoo and it's APIs are still not set in stone with Google, Microsoft and Ericsson (who started webRTC development) differing on the standard. If different platforms are to video chat to each other using a common standard like webRTC then the standard needs to be a standard across all platforms.

Edit: The WebRTC stack will also be used for game streaming between platforms. Right now it's only viable inside Ecosystems but when WebRTC is an accepted standard then only artificial restrictions will prevent game streaming between platforms.

The same issue with standards is delaying other features in Sony game consoles. DLNA is getting new standards to use HEVC as part of their Vidipath (DLNA CVP2) initiative. Windows 10 and Android L will have HEVC support and the FCC mandate for Cable companies to support Vidipath on all their DVRs and VOD STBs is this June.

I've posted this before; the PS4 has two OSs each with their own memory pool to support various power modes and DRM security....that's a fact. Currently most APPs run in the X-86 gaming APU using nearly 100 watts when they should be running in the low power ARM Southbridge where eventually all IPTV power mode code will run so that when streaming the PS4 draws less than 20 watts. When the routines are finished and APIs are published to companies like Netflix, they will use those APIs and Netflix will drop in size from 1GB to a few 10s of KBs in size and run in a IPTV power mode of less than 20 watts. HEVC will be supported by Xtensa DPUs in Southbridge and both Sony (Playstation Vue) and Netflix have plans to use HEVC to stream even 1080P video. When all apps can do this, suspend-resume then makes sense.

RE: "Verified" Sony employee (Reddit = /u/IWorkForSony) provides info on DLNA/MP3, PS App, PSNow.

Friend Notification is an always running feature that has to be part of the Southbridge OS as does DLNA discovery and since DLNA will be a IPTV feature, it's also a Southbridge routine. This supports the rumor that DLNA will be in the PS4 Q1 2015.

Elios83's compilation is accurate and we should see more of the PS4 OS finished by June as Sony has plans that take advantage of the Vidipath standards. This guy brings up an interesting point also. Spotify and Playstation music being able to stream inside a game would imply Southbridge routines as would ooVoo able to support video chat while gaming without the game supporting it.

There is more support for my early speculation that there are two GPUs in the PS4 with the primary likely being a Xtensa DPU in Southbridge.

Aah this would be great! 100watts for streaming netflix doesnt make sense with devices like a chromecast only needing a few watts.

Thanks for the very interessting info Jeff!
