Game 5: Metal Gear Rising: REVENGEANCE (PC) - 10.4 hours
God damn I wish I knew how to play well from the start (especially parrying)! It only clicked after 2 or 3 chapters, and when it did, it was glorious. (Same thing happened to me with Vanquish). Just a great action game, intense, lots of memorable moments. Story was all right, but since I don't know much about the Metal Gear series, I probably missed a lot of things. If I had one grip, it's that secondary weapons were kinda useless (they were too difficult to use with a controller).

EDIT: Holy shit, Metal Gear Rising 2 was just announced !

Game 6: Sequence (PC) - 10 hours
Started playing this back when Feep gave away a lot of copies here, but I moved on to something else and never came back until this week. Sequence is a mix of dungeon crawler, RPG and Dance Dance Revolution (without the dancing part). It's pretty good, with a few shortcomings. Main problem is its repetitiveness near the end, and some boring grinding. Also wished there were more music tracks and a larger variety of enemies.

Managed to finish yet another game in January! :O

01-31-15 - Game 13: Downfall - about 3 hours
I have seen a bit of The Cat Lady (made by the same guy) and loved what I saw of it. This game... nah. It's over the top without any finesse. Still interesting to play through to see where he started but it's not even close to TCL. I liked the music tho.

I bought this game but apparently it's now free and a remake is on the way. For free it's worth a look if you're a fan of blood, murder, gore and adventure games... I guess.

Game 7: Heroes of the Storm - 6 hours
Pretty good MOBA-lite. Not a huge learning curve unlike the other games in the genre. Matches are short between 15-20 minuets which I appreciate.

Game 8: Ridiculous Fishing - 3 hours
Fun, simple yet crazy mobile game. Great music, art and design. Good sense of humor with a very touching ending. Another awesome game from Vlambeer.

Game 9: Grim Fandango Remasterd - 10 hours
I don't think I figured out a single puzzle by myself. Either I am really dumb or the game is too cryptic. Nevertheless, I loved a lot about this game. The writing and humor is incredible. I loved going through every bit of dialogue. I loved all the characters and scenarios they were thrown in. The setting is really creative and well realized. The music and art style is top notch. Parts of the game is still a little clunky which is disappointing to see. The cut scenes were low quality and the models and the background art looked dated. They really should be fixing those bugs and issues for a "remaster". Ultimately the story and the characters is what makes this game truly remarkable and memorable.

Final update for january:

Game 4: Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes

I wanted to invest more time in it, even if it's a short experience. So I completed the main storyline and toyed with the side missions to see how they will take forms in the phantom pain. All in all, I'm really glad that I pre-ordered MGS V since this is an open world game which will contain fun mission to complete side the mechanics are very solid.

Game 5: Brothers

Short and sweet experience, which is more tangible than Journey from a gameplay perspective. The puzzles are very easy, but I still appreciate how clever they look visually. The biggest strength of the game is it's world setting which is captivating and just beautiful. Unlike an artsy game like Journey, the gameplay is more traditional as you actually have a couple of boss fight if I may say so along with more intricate puzzles which require precision.

Game 6: The Walking Dead + 400 days

I wanted to refresh my memory since I finished the first season in 2012, but didn't play 400 days yet. The format of 400 days simply isn't suited for a 2 hours episode (split between 5-6 characters is overkill). It give the impression of the content being even more lacking than it is, but you do feel that you have a lot more crucial choices to make within the span of one episode since they focus on pivotal moments for each character.

Game 7: Wolfenstein: The New Order

I finished the few chapters I have left to complete the game. It's a game that was in my GOTY list so there isn't much left to day about it except: what a fucking ride this was. :p (this is an AAA FPS campaign with great diversity as far as the locale you visit, which give it the illusion of being a ride of epic proportion through nazi hell).

7 games for the month of january satisfy me, since I'll be much busy with various things to do in february. I'll try to complete at least 3 next months (Vanquish and Rising are short games, so perfect candidate).

January update:

Managed to complete The Stanley Parable (4 hours), Gunpoint (4 hours) and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (26:05). I wanted to 100% ALBW, but I couldn't find the last heart piece even with consulting a guide and redoing/revisiting all minigames and locations.

THOUGHTS:

The Stanley Parable:-I kept myself blind on this game for the most part, so I had no real idea of what the hell I was actually gonna play. I'm glad I stayed dark -- most of the humor inherent to game would have been damaged had I known. Definitely an entertaining romp, and I plan on going back to it to try some of the less annoying achievements. I wound up getting nearly all the "endings".

Gunpoint:
A slick 2D stealth-noir game with some killer humor. Great mechanics and music, if a bit short. Got it on sale and I don't regret it at all. I'll be looking into the custom stuff the game has when I get the chance.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds: ALBW comes rather close to my ideal Zelda game. It lacks an annoying opening/tutorial, emphasizes exploration and freedom, and gives you access to all your tools of the trade from the start. However, the game's Achilles' heel is in its lack of difficulty and mundane dungeon design. The fact that only the final dungeon takes full advantage of the fact you have access to your entire collection of gear is also disappointing -- the game could have been so much more if the dungeons made you use three or more of your items at a time instead of following the classic design ethos of having one dungeon focus on one item. Aside from that the game was entirely enjoyable. I took my time with it since ALttP is tied for my favorite Zelda title (the other being Majora's Mask) and returning to this Hyrule was a treat. Lorule and its inhabitants were cute, but are probably not going to be remembered like other characters introduced in the franchise. Still the best Zelda I've played in a long time and certainly the best original handheld entry since Minish Cap.

I'm short a game for the month (Super Mario Galaxy), but will roll that over into February. I'm currently looking at Steamworld Dig, Bastion, Transistor and Planescape: Torment as my February games.

FEBRUARY:

SUPER MARIO GALAXY (RTTP)

STEAMWORLD DIG

BASTION

TRANSISTOR

PLANESCAPE: TORMENT (RTTP -- It's been a long time)

Lindsay

Dot Hacked
Managed ta get through SA2 pretty handily! Got the stupid Biolizard on my first try for the first time ever!

Games Beaten: 08 / 52
Total Playtime: 73 hours, 53 minutes

Game #9: Life is Strange, Episode 1: Chrysalis

qOzJlxD.png

I am not entirely sure if episodes count as beaten games? If not, I will edit the post.

Anyways, what a great surprise this game was. As someone who isn't a big fan of Telltale's The Walking Dead, I was skeptical about Life is Strange, but I decided to take my chances and buy the season pass last night. And I am glad I did. While I obviously don't know how good the full game will be, the first episode was very interesting. Max's character is very very charismatic and I really like her. The music is great, there is tons of scenery porn, the time rewind mechanic isn't nothing innovative, but still interesting nonetheless, etc etc. There really isn't much to talk about the game without spoilers.

Update

Game #5: Resogun

I bought a PS4 on launch day. Played the hell out of Resogun. It was THE reason I picked a PS4 over X1 early on...but then I did something stupid and traded in my PS4.

August of last year came and I was itching to re-buy the console because of Resogun DLC and TLOU. I picked one up and played nothing but Survival Mode. It was THE thing that was missing from Resogun. The addiction became insane. So insane that I said F the trophies. I just want some high scores, lol.

During the end of December/beginning of January, I decided to really go after the remaining trophies. Just yesterday, thanks to a fellow GAF'er, we both did share play to get the one local multiplayer trophy that stopped us from truly having 100%.

This is one of the most addictive games out there. I always said Geometry Wars 2 was my #1 in this genre, but I think Resogun has surpassed it. Even though I beat this months ago, it isn't until now (seeing everything 100%) where I truly feel I've beaten it.

I am prepared for Resogun: Defenders. If I didn't consider this my #1 game in the twin stick genre already, the new DLC that's coming out will have changed that.

For now, I will continue playing Survival Mode. I actually achieved a high score earlier today:

I believe the guy above me in that pic is a GAF'er. I have something to work towards.

And so, January comes to an end. the final tally is 8 games completed, not bad. Hope I can do at least half of that in February, but I doubt that.

Game 7: Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker - 4/5 - 17:12 hours (29/01/15)
jMGUUuL.png

Done everything (no time attacks) and got the crown. It's a charming little gem using 3D World's amazing engine, the presentation is really great and the diorama-style levels really fun to interact with. The levels, just like in 3D World, almost always contain some unique mechanic to play with, however there are some notable repetitions, like the lava boss stage, that the third time wears out its welcome, being structurally almost identically: one would have hoped for at least a pair more bosses. The book formatting is a really nice change of pace, however the opening sequences, and certain intermissions, are weirdly identical, leaving the player kind of puzzled as to why they're even there. The bonus section is nice to have, it offers some differently paced challenges, but nothing to write home about, and especially no real new content. While the game is in general a great package, it's mostly too easy, becoming often challenging for the wrong reasons, the main focuses are the exploration and puzzles, yet they're almost never the hard parts: you mostly get stuck and die on levels featuring the forced running mechanic, bosses, many on-screen enemies, and the Mummy-Me Maze, which is more a test of endurance and concentration than a "puzzle". So, my complaint would be that action oft takes the spotlight over puzzles, in a game that could have done much more with its puzzles.

This game is:

Game 8: Bardbarian - 1,5/5 - 7:48 hours (31/01/15)
header.jpg

Finished the campaign and tried the side games. Worst game I've played this year so far, I'm mostly baffled by how they completely missed the point of a tower defense game: it's the first game I can remember where you're supposed to lose countless times before winning, you literally can't win the game on your first try. That's a pretty big design fail in my opinion: one of the most important mechanics in a tower defense is being able to buy and upgrade units on the go, in order to adjust to what the waves of enemies contain; here you can't, you just choose three type of units at the beginning and that's it, you can't even upgrade on the field, you have to lose to do it (but you have to grind the money playing and dying soo thereafter), of course the units are severely underpowered at first so the whole system falls on itself and crumbles. Disappointing in almost every way.

Game 1: God of War (PS3) - [4 hours]
- Decided to try out PlayStation Now on PS4 and realized that God of War was the only game in the series I didn't have trophies for.
And since it was an easy platinum to get I went for it! It took a couple days but I achieved that platinum. Thank you based Sony!

xCLff63.jpg

Game 2: Far Cry 4 (PS4) - [43 hours]
- I bought this on release to play co-op with one of my best friends. Funny thing is neither of us had motivation to play it until the beginning of this month lol.
Had fun with it though, got the platinum trophy for it as well.

ktjBwHl.jpg

Game 3: The Walking Dead: Season One (PS3) - [14 hours]
- This was also another game I finished with PlayStation now. I had never finished the entire season, even though I had played a few episodes before.
I had watched streams so I knew how it would end but playing through it was like watching it over for the first time again. Really glad I finished it, now I have to get started on season two!

wp0wXpE.jpg

Game 4: Unfinished Swan (PS4) - [5.5 Hours]
- Had a lot of fun with this game! At first I was a bit confused as to what I was supposed to do but it became clear really quickly.
I really liked the idea of giving the world life and character by tossing paint all over the place. Games like this are what I live for, simple and creative that make you think.

12ai80e.jpg

Game 5: Resogun - [??? hours]
- Resogun is absolutely amazing! When it first came out I hated it with a passion because I had no idea how to save all the humans, or what I was supposed to do. I would always die, and everything just seemed impossible. Once you get the hang of it though it can become an instant addiction. Tons of hours have been dedicated to this game, trying to beat friends scores and get trophies. I actually managed to get the platinum for it this month as well. The last trophy I needed was to finish the game on experienced difficulty without losing all 4 lives and it was a struggle!

BmvPDoZ.jpg

Game 6: Octodad: Dadliest Catch (PS4) - [2.5 hours]
- Noticed the GAF thread about Octodad and realized that I had the game but never actually took the time to play. I immediately started it and fell in love! It was a pleasant surprise that kept me smiling throughout the duration of me playing.
There's a part where you're trying to out swim a shark that had me dying. The way the shark would eat you was just hilarious.

January update. I've completed 9 games, which is much more than I expected for the first month. Some of them being extremely short helps, tho, but there are also a couple kinda long. I've also abandoned three more games

Original post.

Completed games

armageddontaum7.png

#1: Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon (PC)
23 hours (16 in 2014)

A 40k' Panzer General with super-heavy tanks and some small titans. It may be pricey for a reskinned Panzer Corps with a non-very long campaign. It may have some huge balance issues. It may be not as massive as Final Liberation or charming as Rites of War. I don't care. I enjoyed it and there is no such thing as enough good 40k games. This is one.
★★★☆☆

groundsputd.png

#2: Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (PC)
7.8 hours (3 in 2014)

Metal Gear Solid with top-notch gameplay and non-clunky mechanics? What kind of sorcery is this? As a "complete" game it may be lacking for many people, but as a "gaming experience" is fantastic. First time I loaded the game I ended up spending hours doing silly things around the camp just because I could, without even touching the mission itself... and it was a blast. As a TPP teaser it works even better: I'm hyped as fuck. I will probably replay all the missions before TPP on a higher difficulty.
★★★★★

wolfcdu34.png

#3: Wolfenstein: The New Order (PC)
13.8 hours (2 in 2014)

What a ride was this. Perfect hybrid of old-school and modern mechanics plus some extra things of its own, creating a game as challenging as fun to play. The over the top B-movie setting and plot is superb, and it has some extra bonus points for all the satanic Nazi constructions the game features.
★★★★☆

deusex8quxa.png

#4: Deus Ex (PC)
21 hours

I never played beyond the first level when the game was released, so decided to purge this heresy... and I kinda regret not doing it before. Fantastic game with an incredible scope and ambition even for today. I LOVE the freedom it gives to you to face each and every situation. It's only weakness is the horrible AI, one of the worst I've ever seen, hilarious at times. And somehow, during these years the graphics have moved from crappy to "hey, it's not so bad" on my brain.
★★★★☆

sleepingk2u0n.png

#5: Sleeping Dogs (PC)
17 hours

I really like how the game tries to get away of the usual GTA formula with its focus on melee combat and the use (and abuse) of all kind of Yakuza/Hong Kong action movie tropes. I also love the city in both, visuals and how different does it feels when you are moving around all its places, although at the end is pretty small and seems a bit underused due the short main story. It's also a shame how unpolished combat is, including melee. With some more love (and money/time/whatever), it could have been a fantastic game instead of just an okish one.
★★★☆☆

expendabrosgduta.png

#6: The Expendabros (PC)
1 hour

Fun little game, much more difficult than I expected and good enough to pique my curiosity with Broforce, so kudos for it. It's also better than the movie it promotes, but that was easy :p
★★★☆☆

ryse0cuuv.png

#7: Ryse (PC)
6 hours

What a wasted opportunity. Visually it's breathtaking, one of the few games that really "wowed" me in my life. But jeez with the gameplay. Ten minutes into the game, and you have already seen 80% of what it will offer gameplay wise. The other 20%, a couple new enemies with special attacks and the Gladiator mode which I almost haven't touched. On the other hand, the story is as stupid as I expected, with a silly "Batman of Duty: Roman Warfare" take that ends up being kinda charming... although the only reason I continued pushing the game was to see how the next scenario would look.

Someday Crytek will remember again how to balance tech and gameplay. Someday.
★★☆☆☆

shankebu0g.png

#8: Shank (PC)
2:31 hours

I'm amazed with Klei. I already had them on high regard after the marvelous Mark of the Ninja (and a bit of Invisible Inc.), but after playing both Shanks I would follow them to the hell. Gorgeous art and fun to play.
★★★☆☆

shank28suar.png

#9: Shank 2 (PC)
3:30 hours

Same beautiful art than the first game and same gameplay... but somehow it doesn't work as good as there. I still don't understand why the hell they moved dodge from the left trigger to the right stick. Awful decision and completely non-intuitive.
★★★☆☆

-------------

Abandoned Games

#1: Assassin's Creed II (PC)
4.9 hours

To be honest I've never liked Assassin's Creed since I played the first on 360, and the few hours I did spend with the third game worsened my opinion on the saga. But AC2 has always been claimed as THE BEST Assassin's, including by several friends, so I decided to give it a chance during the last Steam Sales. But nope, I still don't like the gameplay at all. Boring combat, awful stealth. This series is dead to me.
★☆☆☆☆

#2: Deus Ex Invisible War (PC)
4 hours

And here goes the award for the Worst Sequel Ever, also nominated for Most Disappointing Game, Worst User Interface and Worst Gunplay In A FPS. Terrible game, and not only as a Deus Ex title. Really awful.
☆☆☆☆☆

#3: The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing (PC)
3 hours

Tried to play it in cooperative, and turned to be a terrible bug-fest with stupid mechanics and awful combat. Gigantic disappointment after all the good things I did hear about it.
☆☆☆☆☆

-----------

Working on:

-X-Wing Alliance (PC) - Around 24 hours in. 6 missions left.
-Alpha Protocol (PC) - 10 hours in. One city and a half left.
-Dark Souls II (PC) - 3 hours in. Not really digging it for now :(
-Euro Truck Simulator 2 (PC) - 8 hours in. Playing it from time to time.
-XCOM + The Long War mod (PC) - 15 hours into this game. Not sure if I will be able to finish it this year.

Been on a Mario kick this month. Let's keep it rollin'.

Game 3 - Super Mario 3D World (Wii U) - 32 hours
It's hard to say anything that hasn't already been said about the game. It is damn near perfect. It ramps up the creativity in level design from about mid-way through World 1, and it just never stops accelerating from there. Every time you think "this is amazing", you just haven't seen anything yet.

I enjoyed it enough to go through every level 5 times (once per character), collect all the Stars and Stamps, and then do all the final bonus levels with all the characters. I even played with three other friends from the beginning on another file, and we got about 4 worlds in, and it was just fun in a whole new way.

I've always thought of myself as not the biggest Mario fan, but with games like this, it's so hard to keep saying that.

thMTFq2.jpg

Game 4 - Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Wii U) - 11 hours
I actually started this before I ever touched 3D World. I got about a level in, and wasn't too enamored with it. Got addicted to 3D World, devoured all of it, and jumped back into this. It was night and day. It was the perfect change of pace. Still Mario themed sure, but just a little bit more cerebral, a little less execution oriented. That being said, I did go through all three of the main "episodes" and pick up all the Stars, stamps, and cleared all the challenge times. I did the "bonus" stages that also unlock via 3D world, but I still have a few more challenge times to clear in that bonus group.

Still, I beat the game. I'll go back to those in due time. I loved it.

144iY8B.png

Game 5 - New Super Luigi U (Wii U) - 5 hours
I just finished tearing through this. Again, I thought I would be Mario-ed out, but the way they changed the pace of the game, by making them incredibly tight, short, skill and execution heavy levels was just another perfect change of pace after Captain Toad. I just tore through the game, I didn't even bother attempting to get all of the coins/collectibles/exits, as just survival was challenge enough. I may go back someday and attempt to do all of that, because the level design on display in this game is just masterful. But for now, I think I've finally had my fill of Mario.

Absolutely worth the $20 asking price for anyone who even remotely liked NSMBU and craves a truly challenging 2D Mario game.

In Progress
  • Kid Icarus Uprising - Up to Mission 9. Doing as many challenges as I can on the way. I'm thinking that I'll stop doing that and worry about it if I still want to do it once I beat it. I like it so far, but I also haven't touched it in a few weeks.
  • Super Smash Bros. for Wii U - Unlocked all the major things, but still going through a lot of the single player content. This is worlds better than Brawl overall. I really love the feeling/pace of matches, and it's been the go to game when I've gotten together with friends.
  • Mario Kart 8 - Going through the DLC. I just need three stars on one of the cups in Mirror. Time trial ghosts done. Fantastic value for the price. This is the backup game with friends when we've had enough Smash Bros.
  • Star Wars: Dark Forces - Now that I finished AC2, I used a randomizer to pick out another game from my endless Steam backlog, and ended up on this. Spent a few evenings on it so far. I remember playing this when I was younger, but going through it now, I'm pretty sure I never got past the fourth mission. A really interesting variation on the DOOM design for the time. I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would. I have to at least be halfway through at this point.

This is my january update:

Game 1: Guacamelee! STCE (Xbox One) – 15 hours - ★★★★☆
52DWcqm.png

Finished the game with 100% map complete, just missing the hard mode achievement. It was a really fun game, loved the art style and the gameplay. Isn’t a hard game but there are some tricky screens.

Game 2 (Jan.2): Mirrors’ Edge (Xbox 360) - ~10 hours - ★★★★☆
GhcDsAP.png

Main story completed but I still need to do the timetrials. Short and fun game, looking forward for the reboot.

Game 3 (Jan 3.): Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (Xbox 360) - Tons of hours - ★★★★☆
egPBFU7.jpg

Almost everything completed (just missing a couple side quests). I really liked this game, it is very fun and have a well crafted world and lore.

Game 4 (Jan.16): Assassin's Creed (Xbox 360) - ~18 hours - ★★★☆☆
DwgeAKB.jpg

I like this game mainly because of the historic setting. The gameplay is very repetitive and the side missions are all the same.

Game 5 (Jan.22): Assassin's Creed II (Xbox 360) - ~30 hours - 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
ScHp4WT.jpg

Amazing game, great cast, good story, beautiful maps. A realy good experience after the first Assassin's Creed game.

Game 6 (Jan.26): Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (Xbox 360) - ~25 Hours - ★★★★☆
b2Zvm2s.jpg

A good game and very similar to AC2, it just adds more game mechanics and a multiplayer mode (not really good)

Started off much better than I would have expected:

January

Game 1: Danganronpa - 26:12:08
Great game; loved the story and found the gameplay bits to be pretty entertaining

Game 2: Danganronpa 2 - ???
Loved the story, maybe even more than the first and found (some of) the new gameplay additions to be pretty enjoyable.

Game 3: Knack - An eternity
Boring as shit. Pretty much just played it while listening to podcasts.

Game 4: Persona 4 Arena Ultimax - ???
Gameplay wasn't much different from the first, but I’m no fighting game buff so maybe I’m wrong. I’m glad the just made three different story modes instead of making you play through 10 different ones which all have different things happening.

Game 5: Devil May Cry - 09:33
I had some annoyances with the camera (or lack thereof) sometimes but besides that I had a pretty good time.

Game 6: Devil May Cry 3 - 14:04:57
Great game! Story wasn't to bad and the gameplay was awesome, I’ll probably play it again when I clear more of my backlog.

Game 7: Devil May Cry 4 – Around 12 hours
Fun game, but I didn't like it as much as 3. Like Nero’s character, but there were some things that made him more annoying to play as than Dante, one being that he couldn't evade attacks nearly as well, I think. Also, the backtracking through the whole game as Dante was pretty weak.

Game 8: Guacamelee – About 7 hours
I played this on and off so I don’t think I can really talk as well of it as the other games, but I found it to be pretty fun. That last dungeon was a bitch though.

Game 4: Kirby: Triple Deluxe
Playtime: 7:48

The first Kirby game I have ever finished! I got all Sun Stones, but I didn't go for all the key chains. I played the majority of the game last night and today. I am not going to beat the other modes right now, as I am burned out. Either way, the game is pretty good. I didn't really like the last world with the repeated level themes and forcing you to fight the bosses again. Kirby is cute, as always. One of the only 3DS games where I always had the 3D on, except for tilt sections. I recommend this if you like platformers.

12. Mass Effect 3 (PS3)

9dSzZxk.jpg

Playtime: 33 hours & 16 minutes
Rating: TBD
Start date: 27th January, 2015
End date: 1st February, 2015

So I just finished this and I'm not sure what to say. It was an improvement from Mass Effect 2.. the gameplay was better, story was better, everything flowed better and it was just a general improvement. I took my time with this one because I didn't want to be finished with this game and I'll most likely go back and play through them at some point. So in all I absolutely loved this game and the series in whole up until .. the last 15 minutes? That ending is fucking hilariously bad. All of that just for it to end like that? Really? Everything after Shepard gets hit by Harbinger is just shit. Fuck me. Maybe I'll feel better about it after I read some peoples views on it or something. idk. I'm pretty mad right now.

Game #3

DR1.jpg

Platform: PS Vita
Duration: 1/8/15 - 1/31/15
Completed: 55:44
Thoughts: I can see why this was a GOTY contender for folks who loved visual novels, especially fans of Zero Escape and Ace Attorney. At first, it started off a bit cliched and some annoying characters to deal with but after each class trial, things got very interesting. Monokuma is definitely a memorable antagonist and in the end...hope clashed with despair. A result you couldn't even fathomed. Aside from some tedious mini-games, any person who loves visual novels should scramble to find a Vita/PSP/ISO file and play this game. If I made a 2014 top 10 list, Danganronpa: THH would be up there.

GAME #2 : The Last of Us - Remastered
cVABgDu.jpg

Rating: ★★★★★ - Platform: PS4 - Developer: Naughty Dog
Nothing much to say that hasn't been said already about this game. A masterpiece remastered with better visuals at 60 fps and the "Left Behind" DLC as a bonus. Finished the game on Survivor mode this time and I must admit that it was a fantastic experience, way better and way more intense than on normal. Fantastic remaster of one of the best game of the last generation !

GAME #5: Destiny (2014)

All reviews of Destiny must being with "I'm the first one to admit there are flaws..." and to not be held accountable for not... never mind. I don't find anything inherently wrong with Destiny, some minor nitpicks aside. I just hit level 30 and filled up every slot with epics. I play for an hour here and there whenever I have some time left over. This game is perfect for that. Far better than Diablo 3 which was the last game I entertained my RNG itch with.

The moment-to-moment gameplay is well paced and the complete lack of a coherent story is such a relief that I wish more games would gut them out. I love doing the daily quest, random dungeons, collecting my various currencies and avoiding organised multiplayer like it's contagious. I have been trying to get back into organised multiplayer but the trauma that is World of Warcraft still lingers. And it's a sight for sore eyes that an MMO-lite is so perfectly tuned for someone who has been burned out on the genre.

GAME #6: InFamous: First Light (2014)
| Rating: ★★★ | Platform: PS4 | Developer: Sucker Punch Productions |

This is the proper way to expand the experience of a game. Better framerate, fleshing out side-characters and making the best use of the assets you've created. Throw in a good story and an interesting leading lady and you've got yourself a success story.

When judged as a whole product it comes apart. The side-quests are just collect-a-thons with no real consequence as there is little incentive to maximize your character unless you're interested in the leaderboards. And there's very little else to do once you've seen the story play out.

Fetch is, as a character, a perfect example of how to make a female protagonist. She's more or less just a person who happens to be a girl.

12. Rollers of the Realm (PS Vita)
Finished February 1st
Had some high hopes about this game but knew that it might be not that great.
And good God what a boring mindless, skill-less game it is.
I am a big fan of pinball games, so the idea behind the game sound interesting but is never proven and is full of shortcomings.
The game takes a lot of what is bad about pinball and implements it in an adventure style progression.

The campaign is annoying but thankfully short. After the campaign is over there are an arena where you can try to reach goals and beat highscores. Might try this game again on PS4 (cross-buy) to see if it's better there, but I doubt it. I have no desire at all to try and get all trophies.
Thankful I bought it on a sale.
I can't recommend this game to anybody.
Please avoid and spend your money on something better.

Well, January is over -- here's my last update for it

a7L7sAP.jpg

Game 6.) Trinity: Souls of Zill O'll (PS3)
Finished on 1/25 - [54hrs:36m] - Party Levels around 66-64
Omega Force's take on RPG+Musou hybrid
A game I started in 2013 and kinda been slowly chipping away at it. I would frequently get disinterested and take long breaks from up due to the receptiveness. Since I'm taking the 52 challenge this year, I decided that this was the year to finally finish it. Usually I love me some Musou but this felt weird to me since it felt like about half the game is wading through menus and reading the lore of the world. I know this a series the US never got, and maybe if were more familiar with it I suppose I would've appreciated it. The first 2 chapters felt a slog... but it kinda got more interesting after that. By the end I liked it okay, kinda bittersweet.

A Platinum Trophy is within reach but I'll save it for when I'm really bored, I guess

Original Post

So my January Progress Report is:
1.) Dynamite Deka
2.) Costume Quest 2
3.) Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable
4.) Plants Vs Zombies
5.) The Legend of Korra
6.) Trinity Souls of Zill O'll

Not too bad. A little disappointed in myself that I couldn't fit a 7th game for the month.
Was really close with Five Nights at Freddys (stopped at the 5th Night) but with APEX going on this weekend.... I just couldn't help it.

Anyway, gonna continue with that soon. Also been playing Earthbound

Here's to more finished in February

6. Inazuma Eleven GO: Shadow 3DS
Ly0AvIZ.jpg

Completion Time ~ 21 hours
First time I've played a game from this series, didn't really check it out before buying it, just an impulse purchase on release and never touched it. I really like the English voice acting for some reason, usually people dislike the dubs but I found it pretty enjoyable, Arion's voice when happy always made me laugh. Story was enjoyable, some decent twists even though they were slightly obvious, the graphics are really nice and the switch to anime was also enjoyable, would have liked some more. Gameplay was fun, lots of RNG and I stayed ~7 levels below the recommended which made it quite challenging (lost the QF like 6 times 3-2 lol). Its by no means perfect but I've not played anything like it and it was really fun start to finish, taking top place in my average playtime on my 3DS.

7. Tetris/Tetris Ultimate/Tetris DS
kP57Mhk.jpg

Completion Time ~ N/A
Been playing so many different versions of this on my 3ds (want to get Puyo Puyo Tetris for Xbox imported too), its Tetris, its kinda hard to go wrong. I haven't had a real go and most of the game modes, Ultimate seems kinda lacking but wasn't too expensive and not a big fan of the sound track, managed to nab GB Tetris the day before it was removed from eshop, first game I ever had on my gameboy pocket. Been playing almost every day since watching KevinDDR at AGDQ.

8. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
dcMB2kn.jpg

Completion Time ~ N/A (Probably put in 50+ hours since 1st Jan)
Its Counter-Strike, its the GOAT of smaller team based FPS. Fuck the Tec 9
★★★★★

9. Liberation Maiden
23taU3R.jpg

Completion Time ~ 1 hour
Not much to say, overpriced on 3DS, short as hell, story that was impossible to give a shit about, the end 'bosses' of each level were decent enough along with the last one but just far too short for the money. Graphically did nothing for me either. Price probably pissed me off more than anything but probably my fault for not really understanding its about replaying it, a bit like Star Fox 3DS
★★

7. Metroid Prime, New Play Control: 8:30. Finished in like 3 sittings. Still an impressive title, excluding the annoying mine portions, and Wiimote controls feel completely natural. I forgot enough to get hooked, but remembered enough to kinda finish it early.

I also got 100% on my already finished Rayman Jungle Run.

Never done this before so I figured that I'd join in. ;)

Game 1 - TLOU: Left Behind - Started and finished 1/3/15 - 2:12

I finished TLOU in the middle of December 2014 so it didn't make the cut-off but its DLC did. It did some interesting things but I honestly found myself preferring the main game far more. I found it difficult getting emotionally invested in Ellie's friend, especially since TLOU revealed her fate already.

Game 2 - Wolfenstein the New Order - Started 12/16/14, finished 1/3/15 - N/A as PS4 didn't log the time played. At least 10 hours.

I gave up on the FPS genre a long time ago after I binged on the Call of Duty series. But a couple of years had gone by, New Order was selling for $15 on the PS4, I had heard good things and so I picked it up. And honestly, I had a blast. Lots of fun weapons, over-the-top cutscenes and interesting levels. Oh, and two pretty intense sex scenes!

Game 3 - GTA V - Started 11/29/14, finished 1/21/15 - 29:26

I played about ten hours of this game on the PS3 before I moved on to other things but once I bought my PS4, I returned to it and found myself doing some major marathons in mid-January to finish it. So far, the only GTA game I've beaten, by far my favorite with lots of fun missions and characters (even if they're all assholes).

Game 4 - Zelda: A Link Between Worlds - Started 1/23/15, finished 1/24/15 - 11:48

I loved this little game, even if it was ridiculously easy and the dungeon designs were very hit and miss. I played through it in an impressive two-day marathon. It just grabbed me and wouldn't let go. Wonderful music too, a lot of it remixed from Link to the Past.

Game 5 - Captain Toad Treasure Hunter - Started 12/25/14, finished 2/1/15 - 6:59

A very charming game that I somehow expected more from, even though it's a budget title. Still, it was very cute and there were some very clever levels in there, amidst the ones that were sorta generic. This time is for beating the game only and since there's plenty more to do, I'll update it once I've gotten 100%.

Game 6 - Dreamfall Chapters - Started 10/31/14, Chapter 1 finished 2/2/15 - 8 hours but a lot of this was idle time so probably closer to 5.

I'm a big fan of The Longest Journey (and somewhat less so of Dreamfall) so I was hoping for more of the former than the latter, which isn't really what I've gotten here so far. In fact, the first chapter is incredibly slow-paced, going for a "day in the life" approach but the problem is that the protagonist's life isn't really that interesting. I just wanted the story to get moving but I guess I'll have to wait until the second chapter comes out. On the bright side, the fundamental engine is solid and the dialogue is quite good, with lots of great voice acting. There's a lot of potential here. I'll update this entry with each chapter.

Game 7 - Escape Goat
- Started 1/1/15, finished 2/2/15 - 2:44

I'm a sucker for puzzle games but for whatever reason, I usually end up having to seek a walkthrough whenever I play them. Escape Goat was no exception, as I got stuck many times in a fury. Fundamentally, this is a great, very short puzzle platformer with very simple concepts, very simple graphics and some pretty catchy music. I enjoyed my time with it but have no particular desire to play through the now unlocked super hard levels.

Game 8 - New Super Mario Bros. 2 - Started 2/4/15, finished 2/6/15 - 3:02

Last year, I went through a massive Mario binge, playing 3D Land, 3D World and New Super Mario Bros. U (and Luigi U). I have no regrets as it brought me back to my roots and provided hours of gaming pleasure (almost 100 of them). This year, I returned to Mario with this game and I'll admit, the luster is wearing thin. New Super Mario Bros. 2 sticks to the "New" brand with unsettling ease. It recycles graphics, music (MAKE THE BAHS STOP) and level concepts. It's still fun, as every Mario game usually is but I went on autopilot mode playing this game. The one thing they tried new was sticking shitloads of coins in there. Gotta collect them all! Problem is, this just made an already easy game even easier with all the 1ups you collect. By the time it was over, I had over 100 lives and it's not like I played this game for long periods of time. There's still some bonus stuff left but I'm not sure if I'll bother this time around. If I do, I'll accordingly update.

Game 9 - Ys: Memories of Celceta
- Started 2/5/15, finished 2/10/15 - 16 hours

With this game finished, I have completed all available Ys games (with the exception of V, which I tried and hated). Part of me wishes I had played them the other way around, as I started with Oath in Felghana (the best) and finished with VII and Celceta, perfectly fine games but not really up to par. I was especially disappointed by VII, which I played on Hard difficulty and unlike previous games, the bosses just became HP sponges that weren't fun to kill because the battles lasted forever.. There was a ton of dialogue from characters I didn't care about and the story was loaded with JRPG cliches. Even worse, the party system wasn't nearly as much fun as solo Adol in the previous games.

The good news is that Celceta is a better game, with a more effective story and the characters, while being one-dimensional are perfectly likable. My complaints with the battle system stand, especially noticeable since I played on Normal and the game was unfortunately a joke, difficulty-wise. Dungeons were very hit and miss, with most of them following a simple formula. I was pleasantly surprised by the final dungeon, which had some interesting (if infuriating) puzzles and an imaginative look. But as most everyone has pointed out, the ending is disappointing. I still had a good time and the music was rocking as always (although not up to the level of the best Ys games) but I'll be looking forward to replaying Oath on a higher difficulty.

Game 10 - Outland – Started 2/14/15, finished 2/18/15 – 7 hours

This was a game that I had started years ago on the 360 but never finished. When I sold the console, I bought the PC version and started over. It's a fun little Metroidvania with engaging Ikaruga elements (switching colors to dodge bullets). Some of the boss battles in particular were well-designed and a nice challenge., the final boss in particular which made me rage for over an hour. It didn't help that I was unwilling to grind for gold to buy more health and special attack upgrades. It's just a shame the game is a tad graphically sterile. The art itself looks great but it doesn't differ a whole lot throughout the game and after a while, fatigue set in, not helped by how samey a lot of the gameplay is. It was a fun diversion in between sessions of Lufia 2 but I don't see myself really remembering the game in the future.

Game 11 - Lufia 2 – Started 2/10/15, finished 2/19/15 – 28 hours

March is going to be dedicated to several SNES games that I've started several times but never finished. But to get a head start, I decided to do Lufia 2 in February. I've played about a third of this game in the past before usually moving on to something else. Turns out there's a reason. The game is formulaic to a fault, with static storytelling, characters and especially locations. It's basically town/dungeon/town/dungeon to the very end and the dungeons are almost all caves or towers. About ten hours in, there was a mountain area and it was a refreshing breath of air (and it helps that some of the toughest puzzles were in there). But even then, it just meant that mountain areas joined the rotation and I soon got sick of those too.

What helps is that the dungeons are loaded with puzzles, some fairly easy, others pretty fiendish. It really helps liven up areas that are otherwise monster slogs, especially with the Dragon Quest-esque battle system which is slow as hell. I wish that later JRPGs followed in this game's footsteps at least in that area. Some decent tunes (especially the battle themes) are also in the game's favor. I just wish that the many hours I spent on it didn't feel like such a chore.

Game 12 – Life is Strange
– Started 2/21/15, finished 10/19/15 - 15 hours

I tried the PS4 demo of this out on a whim and came away pretty impressed. Well-defined characters, witty writing and a gorgeous, fully-realized world. I bought the whole thing on the PC and for the most part, my thoughts haven't changed. Unlike Dreamfall Chapters, it sucked me in right away. There were a few glitches here and there (the main character not recognizing a picture of someone she had fought with just a few hours before) but overall, I'm pretty happy and wait eagerly for more chapters. As this is an episodic game, I will continue to update this entry as chapters are released.

The game continued to build as it went along, despite a few sidesteps. Dialogue could be clunky and melodramatic scenes didn't often work as well as the creators no doubt hoped but despite a somewhat disappointing final chapter, I don't regret my time with Life is Strange.

Game 13 - Alan Wake - Started 3/1/15, finished 3/8/15 - 12 hours

An interesting, atmospheric game that doesn't have nearly enough combat variety to sustain its length. You pretty much fight the same enemies throughout the game with very little variation. At first, it's fun trading off the flashlight and firearms but that's all there is and I was burnt out by the fourth chapter. Unfortunately, there were still several hours left. The story was also problematic, in that it started out really interesting with an air of mystery before becoming trite and predictable near the end. What helped was the characterization. Alan was likable enough and Barry especially provided much needed levity. It is worth noting that the game provides a decent challenge, even if it's the kind where I was swearing at the screen and not really having much fun. I tried to go through the DLC but they're just more of the same and harder. It wasn't worth it for me. I'd had enough.

Game 14 - Hotline Miami - Started 3/10/15, finished 3/11/15 - 6 hours

This game was just pure adrenaline, with blood everywhere and thousands of deaths (mine and the enemies). Almost sadistically difficult at times, I cursed more at this game than I have at any in months, variations of "FUCK OFF", "FUCK YOU" and "PIECE OF SHIT ASSHOLE GAME". Despite all the rage, it was also one of the most addictive games I've ever played. Also aiding it is a pounding electronica soundtrack, nothing I'd listen to outside of it but somehow, it fit the atmosphere perfectly. What didn't work for me was the story, which was a jumbled mess which ultimately made no sense. And worse, the big climax was anticlimatic. Judging by the achievement title ("That's It?"), it was by intent but that doesn't make it any less sucky.

Game 15 - Final Fantasy III (Steam) - Started 6/6/14, finished 3/21/15 - 19:19

I didn't actually intend on beating this game this month but my buddy Bob has been doing a complete Final Fantasy playthrough and I've decided to join him for both 3 and 4. Over the last year, I'd played the first nine hours and in the last week, I polished off the last ten.

Verdict? It's very much a product of its time. Grinding is a necessity (especially for the final boss), the story is completely bare bones as is the characterization and the battle system has been improved upon in later games. The first half of the game in particular is a gigantic slog. But somewhere around the twelth hour, experience from monsters increased and my characters quickly became badasses which really improved the experience. It was worth playing just to see how the series evolved over time. And the Uematsu score is perfection, his finest early work.

Game 16 - Final Fantasy IV (Steam) - Started 2/27/15, finished 3/27/15 - 22:37

I will always have a soft spot for FFIV. I played it for the first time as a kid and have beaten it several times since. This was the first time I had tackled the challenging Steam version though. The bosses were especially brutal at times and I grinded a lot for the final dungeon (which seemed to go on forever, in the grand early FF tradition). I tackled the first nine hours in February, took a break to finish FFIII and returned to it in late March, polishing it off in a pretty intense week.

The difference between FF III and IV is pretty striking, honestly. The storytelling is amped way up, the characters actually have personalities and the gameplay just feels more polished and involving. This particular version doesn't always do the goofy story favors at times, with poor voice acting and the melodrama pitched even higher than before. At least Uematsu's classic score is represented well (even if it's butchered in the ending).

Game 17 - Megaman X - Started and finished 4/10/15 - 2ish hours

In between sessions of Dark Souls and Pillars of Eternity (two *very* long games), I felt the need to toss some shorter things in there too and since I've been meaning to go through the first several X games (at least the good ones). The first game I've played several times and know very well, usually getting stuck on the very final boss. This time, I sped through and conquered him (although just barely). Very fun game, can't wait to play the next few (especially 4, which I've heard great things about).

Game 18 - Ori and the Blind Forest - Started 3/18/15, finished 4/13/15 - 8:25

Ori is one of those games that came out of nowhere for me. Someone posted the OT thread, I clicked on it, saw the pictures, saw the word Metroidvania and I was in. It lived up to my expectations, with gorgeous artwork, splendid music and perfect gameplay, with lots of challenge. I died hundreds of times and I always deserved it. Oh, and the ending made me cry. Damn you, game! My biggest complaint is that there's an area I couldn't return to where I missed some items and so I couldn't get 100% but that's just a nitpick. I want a sequel!

Game 19 - Megaman X2 - Started 4/10/15, finished 4/18/15 - 3ish hours

More of the same but it's hard to complain when the same is pretty damned entertaining. I found collecting the special items much harder than X this time around whereas the final bosses were quite a bit easier. Regardless, I have enough fun to where I immediately started on X3. We'll see how that goes.

Game 20 - Megaman X3 - Started 4/18/15, finished 4/21/15 - 3-4 hours

Disappointing about sums it up. X3 takes everything from X2 and makes it worse. The level designs are uninspired, the bosses are simple (especially if you have their weakness) and the music is garbage. The game adds even more backtracking and collectables to the mix, which would have been okay if they mattered in the grand scheme of things but collecting the armors ultimately amounts to nothing as they get practically zero use. In the grand tradition of X1, the difficulty spikes quite a bit for the final levels and battles. I just wish I relished the challenge when I really just wanted this game to end.

Game 21 - Dark Souls (including DLC) - Started 1/16/15, finished 4/25/15 - 75:59

Amazing. Incredible. Superb. All words that went through my mind while I was playing Dark Souls (most of which I played in the last month). The joke is that I started the game not figuring out that Estus Flasks recharge at bonfires and so I kept getting slaughtered by the first non-Undead Asylum boss because I refused to use them. Once I finally figured it out, the game was frequently challenging but never sadistically so. The level and art design is superb, the fighting engine absolutely perfect and the bosses. Shit, the bosses. Some of them gave me the biggest challenge since Oath in Felghana. It's a very rare game that can keep me engaged for over 70 hours but Dark Souls managed it, to the point where I bought Bloodborne! But Dark Souls 2 will be first (at some point). Hell, I'm even tempted to do NG+! Shit, I loved this game.

Game 22 - Shovel Knight - Started 5/1/15, finished 5/4/15, finished Plague Knight 10/1/15 - 12.1 hours/B]

This is a replay of a game that I beat last year but I enjoyed it so much that I decided to go for it again. This time, I did a few levels and collected as many things as I could, including a bunch of achievements. I had a good time, although the game was unsurprisingly easier the second time around. Bitchin' soundtrack too. Later in the year, I played through Plague Knight and found that fun as well, although the level rehash was a tad disappointing.

Game 23 - Demon's Souls – Started 4/25/15, finished 5/11/15 – 27:55

I suppose it's not fair to compare this game to Dark Souls, one of the most engaging gaming memories I have. After all, it was made before and Dark Souls made a bunch of changes and improvements. Still, Demon Souls felt a little empty to me. There were some amazing levels (some shitty ones too) but the boss battles were largely too easy and disappointing. And some of the mechanics (an item burden) were overly frustrating. The game simply didn't feel as polished as Dark Souls. I also deeply missed the interconnected world, which brought Lordran to life for me. The hub system was interesting and I can see why people like it but it separated the world too much. On the bright side, it was significantly shorter than Dark Souls so it didn't get the chance to overstay its welcome but I'm looking forward to bigger and better from Dark Souls 2 and Bloodborne.

Game 24 - Axiom Verge - Started 5/14/15, finished 5/16/15 - 8:36

In many ways a great game and in many ways deeply flawed, Axiom Verge is really the sum of its parts. I enjoyed the level design, the artwork and the music but found the story and bosses (especially the final one) to be disappointing. There was an interesting tale hidden in here somewhere but it's sabotaged by very poor character development. And while a mainstay of the genre, I found that it was very easy to get lost in this game after getting a new ability and being not sure where to go. I spent far too much time wandering around the maps trying to figure out what to do and it wasn't enjoyable. In the end, I beat it with 56% items and 86% map completion and I don't especially feel the urge to keep hunting, especially since the game doesn't make it easy for you to find hidden items. Still, deeply impressed for a one-man project.

Game 25 - Broken Age - Started 4/11/15, finished 5/18/15 - 9:35

Well, that was disappointing. I had played the first Act last month and had a good time. The writing was sharp, the puzzles weren't too demanding and it was a nice teaser for the second Act. Which kinda sucked. The puzzles were dialed up to levels so obnoxious that I needed a walkthrough for most of them and I STILL had a hard time because the worst ones were randomized. I also found the writing in the second Act much sloppier and it ended in a very unsatisfying, anticlimatic way. The whole thing left a bitter taste in my mouth, a shame because those first three hours were fantastic.

Game 26 - Nayuta no Kiseki - Started 4/27/15, finished 5/27/15 - 26:51

This game came out of nowhere for me, as many of Falcom's games tend to. And being the Falcom nerd that I am, I had to play through it right away, especially when I found out it was an action RPG. Nayuta is Oath in Felghana's long-lost cousin, including the platforming that I've missed from the later Ys entries (although battles aren't nearly as difficult as Oath, alas). Other positives include striking art design (especially for the PSP) and effective music (although nowhere near Falcom's best). Unfortunately, it drowns in JRPG tropes (including one of my least favorite, the amnesiac girl) and the characters frequently refuse to shut up. The poor fan translation I used probably didn't help in this matter (although I've heard from those who understand Japanese that the source material is very poor anyway). By the end, it went on at *least* ten hours longer than it should have but I still had fun.

Game 27 - A Bird Story - Started and finished 6/5/15 - 1 hour

After very much enjoying To the Moon, I was expecting something similar from the same developer. I wasn't prepared to be bored to tears. Telling a story without words is a commendable goal but it wasn't really pulled off here. There were just too many scenes that made little sense and the ending was lacking emotional power. Ah well, on to the next game!

Game 28 - Growing Pains - Started 6/11/15, finished 6/15/15 - 3.3 hours

I've been in a bit of a gaming malaise this month. I've barely played a thing and the games I have played haven't been terribly significant. I'm hoping that Growing Pains is the game that has jump started my motivation. It's a platformer in the Super Meat Boy mold, but not quite as difficult and much, much shorter. I ended up getting every medal in the scant nine levels there are and still barely got three hours out of it. Still, it was the perfect game for what I needed at the time.

Game 29 - Her Story - Started and finished 6/26/15 - 1.5 hours

In between sessions of a much bigger game (Dark Souls 2), I took a break for this thoroughly confusing FMV experiment. The first thirty minutes or so were kinda dull but I eventually got to the point where I figured out there was more going on than I expected and started to get interested. It ended kinda anticlimatically but I don't regret the experience.

Game 30 - Dark Souls 2 - Started 5/11/15, finished 6/28/15 - 48:25

Dark Souls 2 was a good game. Just not a great one, like the first was. Virtually everything suffered in comparison. Level design, monster design, boss design, mechanics, music. I deeply missed the interconnected world and it felt like the levels here were all made in a bubble and then tossed into sequence. Enemy placement was often cheap, favoring groups that all aggro at once. Fighting multiple enemies at once is not this series' strong suit. I just didn't get the same sense of euphoria that I got from Dark Souls. I will say that the DLC level design was significantly better (although as of this writing, I haven't finished it all, mostly because of the bosses are overly difficult HP sponges) but it was still hard not to be disappointed by this, even if I saw it coming.

GAME #2
: Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition (PC) - 100 Hours 56 Minutes (Dec 22nd - Feb 1st)

Dark_Soul.png

The game I originally anticipated to beat first in 2015, Dark Souls has been a great experience I won't soon forget. I was slow to warm to the game initially which I blame mostly on the over hyping by friends, that claimed it to be both extremely tough, and completely unfair. I'll definitely admit it has a steep learning curve but the game never frustrated me. Instead I was given a fantastic world to explore, with beautiful landscapes, unique creature design and delightful characters, each with their own unique tale and twist. It isn't my favourite game, but I definitely enjoyed my time with Dark Souls and I look forward to playing more of the series in the future!

Game 4: Resident Evil HD Remaster

Played the hell out of this game ever since I started. My first run took me about 8 hours to complete with Chris, because I hadn't played it in a super long time, and after that I started going for achievements constantly. Played through Jill...beat under 3 hours...with knife. I just kept going and couldn't stop. I thought maybe I had gotten stale on Resident Evil because I still have not been able to finish Revelations, but I had a great time revisiting this, and now want a RE0 remaster >_<

OP. January update for me. Was able to get through 5 games, which I am more than happy about. Hitting 52 games played this year will be a lot harder for me than last year though. I don't have as many half beaten games as I did last year.

1) Shadow of Mordor PS4 H15
I'm not big into LotR universe and this was my first LotR game. I enjoyed what I played of it. Once I got past the tutorial portion I think I died 3 times in a row before I figured out how to play. Game may have lasted a little longer than it needed to, but I didn't feel burned out by the end of it. Combat was as fun/challenging as you made it.

2) Akiba's Trip PS4 H13
It was an ok brawler, but too many issues held it back. First off the picking up the loot sucked. It was highlighted or anything so it was very easy to miss some of the stuff just sitting on the ground in front of you. Next, and I kind of get why they did it, but locking all the "cool" stuff behind replaying the game a lot. Beating the game once unlocked some stuff, but if you wanted all the options you needed to meet all kinds of requirements. I get it, it is a way to add replayablility. I could only manage 2 playthroughs and then I was done. Any of the perks that were locked out weren't worth playing through again.

3) Wolfenstein: New Order PS4 H13
A lot more fun than I was expecting to have. This was my first Wolfenstein game and I had little idea of what I was getting myself into. Some of the cutscenes were a bit much for me, but what are you going to do. Gun handling was good, though I was surprised at how much I took advantage of stealth. Going into the game I thought it would have been completely run and gun.

4) Infamous Second Son
PS4 H12
The first two Infamous games were just ok to me. Good enough to beat them, but not my favorite by a long shot. Second Son just felt so much better. I'm trying to figure out why, and sadly I think it is the production values that put it over the top for me. Even with fast travel I still found myself zipping through the city using the different powers. The game was beautiful and the powers, while similar, did enough to make each of them interesting.

5) Transistor PS4 H6
Story was meh and very forgettable. Luckily I really liked the combat system in the game. Mixing and matching the powers, trying different things, and a game short enough that I never got bored. I felt Bastion had better music, but there are a couple tracks from Transistor I really liked.

I have a tip for you. Open snipping tool (built into Windows), select the area, then go to imgur and press control+V.

May be a bit simpler than the method you used.

eh, I just had that pic already because I had sent it to my friend a few days ago, and just thought to add it to the thread.

Game 8: Bonk's Revenge - 5 hours - TG16/VC

1CC Bonk 2 this afternoon. I am so fucking in love with these games now. I actually got to the final boss on ONE LIFE! I can't wait to play Bonk 3 for the first time next weekend!

Game 9: Castlevania Adventure: Rebirth - 5 hours - Wii/WiiWare - Replay

Played/finished this back when it first released on a friend's modded Wii, but for some reason I never bought it for myself over the years. Been on a Wii/VC kick as of late and I was in the mood for some old school Castlevania. I 1CC this game on its default setting too this past week )ran the game 3 times, actually). Such a fucking good Castlevania game. Gotta give hard mode a run still, but these Rebirth games are so legit.

Better yet, download 'Gyazo'. It's a free program that is basically the snipping tool, but it instantly uploads the image online so in two clicks you have an image address to post ;)

Game #5 Gunman Clive. 3DS Version fully completed, No Damage and Par times met for each stage for each character. Steam version half-completed.

A less is more stylistic platfomer of the Mega Man vein for run and jump, whose strength is is in it's basic game play being well designed. Be it as a average run and gunner cowboy, a hovering jump damsal rescuing the dude in distress, or the greatest platformer of all time The Duck, it's a joy to make it through each stage.

While it lacks the depth of other more challenging games and I never really felt I needed all that much skill to get through it, a few stages did take retries because I knew I could do better for completing it at a certain time challenges.

It's greatest charm is obviously in it's art style, warm and colourful colours contrasted with darker ones for the enemies and hazzards until the two start to merge for later difficulty. Almost a cartoon as drawn on construction paper it's a smooth and memorable work of art that I throughly enjoyed as it stood out from the many other side scrolling platformers of sprite or plastic looking CGI of the indie scene. It's bosses in particular I shall remember for a while due to this look, and am tempted to make it myself in real life for a wall poster.

As a cheap title to get on 3DS eShop I recommend it as a game to pick up and play.

8. Valiant Hearts: The Great War (PC)
Finished the game. Got most of the collectibles but not all.
Call of Duty understood early on the high-wire act that is a war game: it has to be somewhat entertaining to have anything resembling mass appeal, but it can't trivialize the conflict it's based on or diminish the sacrifices of those who fought in it. I think that's why your allies all have names, even if they never speak to you or interact with you in any way; I think that's why early Call of Duty games would show you quotes from famous politicians, historians and military officers about the horrors of war.

Valiant Hearts tries the same act, but with a fundamentally different approach: the story of a family torn apart by war comes first, and the goal is as much to educate as it is to entertain. It's also not a game that revels much in spectacle for spectacle's sake. Call of Duty, especially in its early days, tried to evoke the feel of war movies like Saving Private Ryan. Valiant Hearts is more like a pulp adventure crossed with a history textbook; one moment has you chasing down a zeppelin in flames or escaping from a ludicrously-equipped French tank, while the next finds you knee deep in a field full of dead bodies and poison gas.

Surprisingly, the mixture works. Flashy comic-book antics aside, Valiant Hearts manages to convey the message that war is destructive and horrible, and that humanity perseveres in spite of it. Uniquely, actual combat is secondary, and the game rarely provides you with weaponry or asks you to aim them at people. Dynamite and grenades are used more often to knock something off a ledge or clear a tunnel than to chase away enemies, and you never aim a gun at anyone. Extra credit goes to the developers for making the conscious choice not to take the easy route of making Valiant Hearts a shooting gallery.

As war games go, Valiant Hearts does more justice to its subject than most. It's definitely worth your time.

Game 6 - Grim Fandango Remastered (PS4): Completed on 2/2/15 - 10 Hours
- I'm glad I finally got to play this game after wondering what it was all about for years. The story, characters, performances, soundtrack, setting and style are all really great and were exactly what I was hoping for before I played. It's a difficult game though since I feel like the gameplay is problematic at times. It requires a lot of thin logic and action in certain situations where interactive objects are indistinguishable from setting. For a remaster it could have had a bit more touching up in the cinematic and mechanical departments, but otherwise I really enjoyed the game.

Game 13: Halo 2 Anniversary
halo2krug2.png

Finished on Normal. I've never played Halo 2 before, so it was all fresh, but I'd heard everyone say it was the weakest because of the Arbiter levels. Truth be told, though, I thought this was a good improvement on the first game. Fun, varied enemy types, with the Flood kept to a minimum. Add dual-wielding and faster regenerating shields, and the game was simply less of a chore. The copy/paste level design still shows its face here and there, but it's thankfully lessened. Standout negatives are probably that the trademark crazy physics can still frustrate, and even on Normal, it seemed difficult to solo, but I'll let it slide because it's over 10 years old. The first half was better than the second half, but I still had a good time throughout.

Game #9: Bob Came in Pieces: 6.7 hours
bob3.jpg

Well this was a fun game. Level design is not really anything special, but solid puzzle platformer fare. The main twist being that you are piloting a customizable spaceship. It has a hard-point on each of the 8 compass directions that you can attach piping or components (3 strengths of thruster as well as push and pull beams). There's a lot of depth stemming from having fully rebindable keys for the individual components and the thrusters will roll the craft if their line of action is off the center of gravity so the controls are as simple or complicated as you want it to be.

There's 13 main missions plus an epilogue and 10 optional VR missions. Some of the VR missions are really hard and creative, but I wasn't able to finish them all. I had a lot of fun with this one.

Monster January to start the year for me:
Fez
Soulcalibur II HD Online
Angry Birds
Virtua Fighter 2
Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers
Runaway: the Dream of the Turtle
Silent Hill: Homecoming
Star Wars: the Clone Wars - Republic Heroes

Could have been even better, but I've been addicted to Destiny of Spirits and also had to replay 2/3rds of Silent Hill: Homecoming after a fun, fun save bug stopped my game in it's tracks. Ugh.

Game Beaten #14: Bushido Blade (PS1) - 30 minutes
(Started and Finished 2/2/15)

Beat the game with all characters. I see why people said the Deadliest Warrior titles were Bushido Blade games. Honestly I think they both are kinda terrible. The entire game can be summed up as run at opponent spamming triangle the game.

Game 5: Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii)- Finished in 12.5 hours

For every amazing platforming level, there was another level that made me want to pull my hair out. Surprisingly, I found the boss fights to be very fair, and while I did enjoy the mine cart levels on World 4, I despise the flying rocket levels. After I beat the game, I went back to try and collect all the Orbs from each world so that I could unlock the Golden Temple, but I gave up after World 3, as I didn't feel it was worth my time.

Overall, a great return to form; it definitely brought back the best and worst of the old Donkey Kong Country games, although I do wish that you didn't have to play it with the damn Wiimote and Nunchuk. Those motion controls need to go die in a fire. I wish there were more levels with the animal friends as well; it was fun playing with Rambi but there was only 1 or 2 levels that he could be used in.

GAME #3
: Night in the Woods: Lost Constellation (PC) - 1 Hour 1 Minute (Feb 2nd - Feb 2nd)

NITW_LC.png

I have yet to back a Kickstarter, the only one which I felt tempted to was Night in the Woods and after playing Lost Constellation, I'm sorry I didn't. There isn't much to it, and yet for each piece of dialogue I had the biggest grin on my face. I adore the humor and characters as well as the rudimentary snow man mini game (I should not be allowed to build a snow man). It was simple, creative, relaxing and an experience that has guaranteed my purchase of Night in the Woods once it releases.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection - Halo 3
image

Criteria: Complete Campaign.
Time played: 8 hours.

Not my first time through Halo 3, but I had forgotten much of the experience over the years. I had previously played through Halo CE and Halo 2 on the MCC. I feel that Halo 3 has aged significantly better than both. It retains that more sandbox approach to battles like CE, but has a better sense of pace like Halo 2. I didn't feel like I spent half of the game retreading familiar ground, which began to bug me throughout Combat Evolved's latter half. The Flood can still go DIAF though... not sure who thought that adding turret Flood was a good idea...

Since I am playing quite some games these days, I suppose I can say one thing: challenge accepted. As you can see on my Backloggery, I have more than enough games I need to finish.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe
Duration played: 24:44

I absolutely love Kirby. I played Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land to death. I loved Kirby's Epic Yarn. However, this game... It felt a bit off. The mechanics were quite entertaining, but the level designs were often pretty boring. I did collected all the rare key chains and Sun Stones, but I did not feel the collection really added anything to the game. Even though the key chains were a pretty nifty addition. I also beat all the extra games. They weren't too hard to beat, except for
The True Arena
. Other than that, it's pretty much a Kirby game you would expect.

Pokémon Omega Ruby
Duration played: 83:10

Ah, Hoenn. How I love you. Of course, this is just nostalgia speaking, but I cannot deny that Hoenn holds a special place in my heart. It took a while for me to have the time to finish this one, but I did enjoy every second of it. There is still plenty to after beating the game (even though I don't like how it is not as good as the post game content in Pokémon Black 2 / White 2). Other than that, I love Super-Secret Bases and I am working on collecting the medals on Pokémon Global Link for this game. Still playing it every now and then!

Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc
Duration played: 25:30:57

So I bought this game during a PlayStation Store sale. It's actually the first PlayStation Vita game I actually bought. I got all the other ones through PlayStation Plus. Anyway, I have beaten this game in three days. It has been a while since I have been playing a game with this much dedication. I liked it. The story got a bit less enjoyable towards the end, but it did not disappoint too much. It was a great game, with memorable characters and interesting game play. Quite glad I bought it. Might also return to the game in the future to beat the School Mode.

Complete list of beaten games:
  1. Kirby: Triple Deluxe
  2. Pokémon Omega Ruby
  3. Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc
  4. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
  5. inFAMOUS
  6. Thomas Was Alone
  7. U.N. Squadron
  8. Professor Layton and the Lost Future
  9. Banjo-Kazooie
  10. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
  11. BioShock
  12. BioShock 2
  13. BioShock Infinite
  14. Mirror's Edge
  15. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
  16. Secret of Mana
  17. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Justice for All
  18. Metal Gear Solid

My first 52 Game challenge! My backlog is unbelievable, so hopefully this will motivate me. (I'm using Backloggery and VGCollect to track my games.)

COMPLETED

aqAXbGn.jpg

GAME 1: Disney's The Haunted Mansion (XBOX)
I've beaten this one several times, but I can always go back and play it again. Nothing special about it (some would call it bad), but it has some decent puzzles and I love the ride. :3

UVkKy1V.jpg

GAME 2: Gauntlet (NES)
I love the whole series, but never gave the older games much of a chance. It was difficult and hard on the eyes. I can't see myself playing it again, but it makes you appreciate Legends so much more.

MrLpupj.png

GAME 3: P.T. (PS4)
I'm totally counting this as an entry. It was spooky and clever and pretty fun to goof around in. I can't wait to play Silent Hills.

xQhDeQR.jpg

GAME 4: Doom3 (XBOX)
I'd never played any of these besides the first. This one was very long, very gray, and very boring. I won't bother picking it up again, although I might try the BFG Edition if they spiced it up.

5s7fCV3.jpg

GAME 5: Digimon: All-Star Rumble (X360)
Wowzers. I bought this primarily to support the franchise in the West. After playing the game, that's about the only reason to play it. I don't normally mind what most people consider "bad" games, but this has almost nothing going for it. Maybe that Vita game will come over here...

YuhQ2XO.jpg

GAME 6: Titanfall (XONE)
I've played the campaign levels multiple times each and it never gave me the story achievements? I dunno, there's only so much run 'n gun MP I can stand before I get severely bored. I'm considering this one beaten, though I will go back and play it now and then.

H3yfiUj.jpg

GAME 7: The Order: 1886 (PS4)
I love it! I've been hyped for this game since day 1, and was very excited to have a crack at it. Yes, it was a little short and an easy Platinum, but that doesn't bother me. The story was great, the visuals were AMAZING and the music was wrenching. I highly recommend this game.

lnoW9Za.png

GAME 8: PlayStation Home (PS3)
I'm going to count this. I've dabbled with it off and on for years with my buddies, and now that it has trophies and will be shutting down soon I thought I'd give it a go. It has changed a lot from its start: lots of new areas, some surprisingly fun and deep games, ridiculous people trying to have virtual sex. (That last one has been a constant.) I never payed real money for anything and still have an inventory full of silly and useless things. It'll be sad to see it go, I hope Sony does something similar (but better) on the PS4.

CURRENTLY WORKING ON
- Wolfenstein: The New Order
- Dragon Quest Monster: Joker 2

LOOKING FORWARD TO
- Alien: Isolation
