What's the funniest "ban message" you've ever gotten?

"Giving you time to pull your foot out your mouth"

I was talking at length about something that, it turns out, I had been taught an inaccurate definition.

"No one needs to know about your desire to jerk off" for posting a GIF. It wasn't exactly my intention, but I 100% understood why it was taken that way and I took my lumps.

I've haven't gotten any funny ban message, I'll also like them to be more informative as the reason of the banning and what rules did they broke. Kind of like Gamefaqs.

Generally a shadowban is when you're banned from posting on a website but when you log in you see your own posts and it doesn't tell you you're banned. The idea is people are just shouting into the void then, nobody engages with them, and then just get bored and walk away or keep themselves entertained talking to nobody.

I don't know if it is brilliant or devilish. Probably both.

There's no shadowbanning on GAF. Generally a shadowban is when you're banned from posting on a website but when you log in you see your own posts and it doesn't tell you you're banned. The idea is people are just shouting into the void then, nobody engages with them, and then just get bored and walk away or keep themselves entertained talking to nobody. It's used on sites like reddit where it's so easy to make an account that if you knew you were banned you'd just immediately create like Brakke_1 and then carry on shitting up the place.

I gotcha. Being ignored can be seen as a punishment itself.

Nope, and my avatar is not some kind of subtle hint. Did they do something similar?

Banned as member, unbanned as mod.

I kind of agree with this. I know and understand most (all maybe?) of my bans but I know some people have gotten some real sketchy ones. It should at least be protocol to link to the offending post or thread regardless of how obvious the ban may seem.

Mod was super pissed, like irrational. It was like a paragraph long and at the end said that the person I was agreeing with was next (and he was). RIP in peace.

Huh? What did I say? Did I screw up again? :(
See, now I have no idea if this is a serious response or not, because I frankly find it kind of weird that anyone would pay attention to me and respect me unless you happen to be a lurker in the very few GAF communities where I actively post. But entertaining the notion that this is a legitimate inquiry;
  • I don’t avoid controversial topics per se, but I usually don’t have much of an impulse to participate in them. Most anything I would want to say has already been covered by someone else, and since I mostly browse on mobile, I have a bit of a bottleneck with replying since I can’t type as quickly on a phone as I can on a keyboard, so most of the time I just don’t bother.
  • I feel strongly about a lot of things, but I also don’t really view a forum consisting almost entirely of anonymous strangers as a great venue to express most of those feelings, as it largely consists of shouting in the wind from my perspective.
  • I’ve lost my temper plenty of times, but the aforementioned mobile bottleneck makes it not worth the effort to respond : ) Also in my advancing age, I have gained the ability to recognize that getting angry over stupid and inconsequential shit while arguing with strangers on the internet is largely unproductive, so losing my temper happens less frequently than it did in years past.

So basically I post like some zen master tortoise who’s too even tempered to get angry at a message board and too slow to bother with most arguments.

Thank you for the serious response. I'm a terrible person and I'm feeling so much shame right now :(

I dun remember my ban message so if it was funny or not is lost to the ages, unless somewhere deep inside the GAF registry those are all saved?

btw what even is a modbot? Saw them popping up alot lately and was curious if they are a real mod or an actual bot o_O?

One of my first bans was due to being a fanboy.

The message itself was straightforward, but what was funny was that I didn't own, or intend to own, the console I was allegedly a fanboy of.

Fortunately that was a short ban.

Not a mod, just a bot.

I've been banned once, but it was lifted. Dunno if that counts or not.

As for the actual message, it was something along the lines of being banned for victim blaming. That wasn't my intention at all, but I came off kind of goofy when I tried to see things from both sides, and could of framed it better than I actually did by cementing my position more clearly at hand, so I kind of understand the ban looking back, even if I didn't agree with it at the time.

It was a weird ass thread anyway.

From what I understand, he's the actual mods' way of closing threads and banning people via smartphone

Oh, well that's no fun. Can people's avatars be locked from their control? I always assumed that was possible since I've seen other cases where the avatar looked like a punishment.

Not the avatar but there's a member with the edit message "I'm awful" in every post.. I wanna know what happened?

it seems that every time i see an uploaded ban message. the mod who is responsible feels it necessary to make a quick slap to the back of the head.

There was a member who was called "nerd1" or "nerdy1," who then got his name changed to "bro1" because of some incident or other, which I think also earned him his tag.

This was another excellent thread. It was something about dudebro games or being upset about brain dead games or something like that. "Bro1" said something like "I don't wanna think I just wanna kill shit". It was great cause he was a little steamed about the topic to begin with.

Like, a mod literally deleted my standard Member tag, then hand-typed in "Member," with no changes at all?

Of course. Why didn't I think of it before?

I was a junior for like a year, but I had a tagged that said Member. I looked like a Member but I couldn't make threads.

I never got banned on GAF or any other forum I posted previously. I always try to avoid personal insults and I don't have the energy to post on controversial threads.

The original name wasn't actually modbot.... it was muddbutt but the letter u followed by any two of the same letter would result in an error in the hashing algorithm GAF was using to generate db records for duplicate posts. The error was fixed within a few days by renaming it to modbot which also served as part of evildoers clean image PR sweep before that famous documentary of his went live.

Some parts of the above post may be inaccurate. It was all so long ago.

I like my headcanon origin of ModBot better. :/

I've been banned twice, one because I pointed out a poster was wrong but he was the OP, so he was special. The second was from a butthurt mod with an emotional attachment to a celebrity.

No funny messages though.

Got banned by a mod who agreed with me and really seemed to hate the person I flamed, but still thought I should be nicer in language... I guess that's the "funniest" ban thing I've gotten?

You have been banned for the following reason:
Warning ban: Please do not make threads about porn pics that blatantly help direct people to finding them, without even having a discussion point in the OP.
Date the ban will be lifted: 05-26-2011, 11:00 PM

It's funny because I got banned for it and within the week people were making threads about nudes with direct links in the OP and no discussion points and they didn't get banned.

Getting banned for not reading an article in the OP.

Some very level headed moderation here.

Which sucks. I thought balls typically dropped by the time anyone has reached moderation age.

Everytime I see this guy unbanned it surprises me. He seems so pointlessly rude, and angry. Also, he told me that he hopes that I burn alive in my car.

Yet it's always so satisfying to see him go.
