Well, I am not going by how many I've completed, but how many I've played a decent amount of.

Let's see:

1. Super Smash Bros for Wii U
2. Mario Kart 8
3. Super Mario Bros. 3
4. Splatoon
5. Mario Kart 7
6. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D

#23. Astebreed (PC) -- June 28 -- 2:07:41 -- ★★★★☆
One of the best shmups I've played. The visuals and presentation are great and the onscreen action reads well. You get a bunch of different camera perspectives throughout the game, which is cool. The gameplay is fun and frenetic, but a couple of the mechanics are a tiny bit awkward to pull off. It looks like they were improved in the PS4 version. The story is pretty nonsensical and hilariously overdramatic at times. What's funny is, the game only has Japanese voice acting and a lot of the story is presented during gameplay. Simultaneously playing this game and reading text just isn't something a human brain can do. Anyway, it's an awesome game.

Game 25: F-Zero (SNES) about 10 hours playing the game
This is a pretty good game. I have the PAL version because that's just what they had when I went to a retro shop, but I don't see any difference between this and the NTSC version. I like this game, it can be pretty hard at the later difficulties but I was able to finish the game and overall I'm kinda meh about it. It's a nice time waster because the leagues don't take too long. I wish the racers had more difference between them, but they all feel the same.

Game 26: Super Mario Bros. (NES) 6 minutes, 30 seconds
I've gotten pretty good at speed running this game. I plan to get a lot of practice in it so that whenever I go to game conventions or just hanging out with people I can speed run it on the first try. I'm usually able to get pretty close to 6 minutes on the dot. I love the ending theme, it's so simple but it's so satisfying to get to it, it's like the perfect fairy tale out-tro. The whole game has incredibly simple but amazing music.

Game 27: Rocket Knight Adventures (Genesis) 8 hours approx
This is an excellent game. It's not too long and I never had to look at an FAQ, the game is very fair. I love the pixel art and this game has some of the best design of its era or even today. The game isn't too difficult but some boss battles are a little aggravating until you get the hang of them. I was really happy to play this game, I've had it in the backlog for a long time. I also want to try out the sequel but I hear it's not as good. I think it's on the Sonic Genesis Collection, so I'll see how it plays because this first one is fantastic. It's so sad to see all weird smaller titles Konami worked on knowing they've left the business for the most part.

I shouldn't add more game since I obviously need to finish the backlog but some of the new additions are just too addicting that I can't help but focus on them first.

Game #2: Tales Of Graces f - ???
I've been making slow progress with this game. Just so much else going on that it hasn't been given as much attention. Anyway, I'm currently inside a
Rockgagong
and that's where I stopped. I am still really liking the game and things are starting to pick up a lot more.

dX28OYP.jpg

Game #4: Persona Q - 14 hours and 33 minutes
I'm still in the second labyrinth grinding some levels. I'll be getting back into this more soon.

gLqLJ2f.jpg

Game # 5: Fatal Frame II
No progress.

vBhVf3o.png

Game #6: Final Fantasy Record Keeper - 100+
It's quite hard to select a finish goal with this game since content is constantly added. For now, I'll just keep my progress as 90% complete since I'm caught up with all events and dungeons and just consider it complete when I've gotten all VIII characters.

Z7fUfi5.jpg

Game #7: One Piece Treasure Cruise - 100+
Much like Record Keeper, addicting F2P game that has me hooked and always playing. I'm all caught up and have pretty much every current rare unit so for now I'm just working on maxing my crew members for future raid bosses. I don't really have a completion goal for this at the moment so for now I'll just set it as beating all available content before 2015 ends.

DnIKnkz.jpg

Game #8: Pokemon Rumble World 3DS - 9 hours
So I downloaded this when it went F2P and just finally picked it up recently and oh boy I'm enjoying this a lot. I'm already at 200 pokemon collected and the island time refills aren't terrible. I'm also happy the game is good at allowing you to actually play it for free rather than heavily forcing the pay model(which I don't mind doing in small doses for other F2P's) so yeah, fun game so far.

xq6VD2F.jpg

Game #9: Terra Battle - 15 or more hours
Yeah one more F2P I'm also playing. This one has more of an endgame goal so I'll just beat all the chapters in the game to get the completion. I'm currently on Chapter 16 and have a lot of great units such as Zuzu, Harold, Kuscah and Samantha.

#39 - Shantae Risky's Revenge

pVXXR5Y.png

Not a big fan of this game. It is not bad, but it is nothing special either. It is just "okay". The platforming is basic, Shantae's transformations are nothing out of ordinary, etc. Also, the portraits are really bad, not only the character design is cringey in the Shantae series, but in this game in special, the art style looks really cheap. Thankfully they changed the art style in the sequel.

The best thing about the game is the music, which is quite unique and composed by the talented Jake Kaufman.

Game # 22
The Avengers, arcade.
Via MAME(though I own the SNES ver.)

Fun, but kinda ugly beat em up like so many others. It was better than Spidey, nowhere near the level of X-Men. It really makes miss a time when Marvel's eggs were in one basket. Interestingly, it had Avengers from the current film(Cap, hawkeye, Vision and Iron Man). It was really to see all the cameos too. Wonder Man, Wasp, Quiksilver, Namor. Lots of expected vllains-Ultron, Red Skull, Mandarin. Unexpected ones too like Crossbones. Also a couple X-villain cameos in a Sentinel and Juggernaut. Also Mech. Taco.

I could be mistaken, but AFAIK the game and its sequel are not in any of the Genesis collections, thought there is a modern sequel developed by a different team, available on PS3, 360, and PC.

Cities: Skylines (PC) - 28/06/15 (142 hours)
Cities Skylines have everything that the moder Simcity should had. This game is a must have for all the fans of the city builder games, just countless hours of never ending fun.
Some things like traffic must be polished but it doesn't break the game.

#40 - Life is Strange Ep. 3 - "Chaos Theory"

Best episode so far. Really really good, Dontnod is really doing a great job with storytelling-focused games. I can't comment about the episode itself without spoiling it, though.

Game 5: Football Manager 2014 (Feb 24th 2015) - PC
Time Played: 145h

As a huge fan on both football and FM, my most played franchise I felt right at home with this iteration even though I didn't enjoyed my time with it as much as I did with FM10, FM11 and to a lesser extend FM12.

16/20

Game 6: The Order:1886 (March 3rd 2015) - PS4

Akin to Ryse, The Order is a game with insane graphics (like I never seen in my life) but very serviceable gameplay mechanics. It does have its setting going for it, nice and original, but the biggest disappointed I had was with the story, paper thin and will most likely never be resolved because of the lackluster sales.

12/20

Game 7: Far Cry 4 (April 19th 2015) - PS4

Far Cry 3.5 basically. Just bigger, funnier, prettier and better.

14/20

Game 8: The Banner Saga (June 4th 2015) - PC
Time Played: 10h

This game really scratch me itch for true based RPG while waiting for the new Shadowrun. I didn't quite followed the story at the beginning and was a bit lost, but when it started to came together I became interest to see how it would go. The ressources system and war battle is underdeveloped in my opinion but it do the job, same for the gameplay during encounters even though I found that the archers are really underpowered and there range a bit to small. I enjoyed my time with it and waiting for the sequel to release.

14/20

Game 9: Game Dev Tycoon (Jun 19th 2015) - PC
Time Played: 8h

A nice little game that let's you run your own gaming studio starting from your garage to an high tech office. The game is pretty simple yet surprisingly addictive, really easy to just pick up and play even my girlfriend who doesn't care about video games like it. I was surprise to see that it wasn't available on mobile, I'm quite sure that it is perfectly suited to that kind of audience. I'm left with wanted a more in depth take on this type of game, managing multiple team simultaneously, having more employee and a bit more difficulty.

13/20

Game 10: Life is Stranger Episode 1-3 (Jun 21st 2015) - PC
Time Played: 8h

Remember Me charmed me with it's interesting setting, it's beautiful visual and soundtrack and of course it's brilliant yet underused alter-memory mechanic. Suffice to say that when DONTNOD announced their new game I was really interested. And what a game, the amount of interactivity and openness to the world is something truly revolutionary when you're used to Telltale offering. It's a science fiction game grounded in reality, with a believable cast, an awesome soundtrack and an uncommon setting. I was truly impressed with what I played and I eagerly await the rest of the season.
17/20

Game 11: Game of Thrones: A Telltale games series Episode 1-4 (June 26th 2015) PC
Time Played: 6h

As a Game of Thrones fan and a Telltale games fan, this game couldn't possibly disappoint me and it didn't. I really feel like I'm in Westeros dealing with matters inherent to this world. Unfortunately the game is plagued with the usual Telltale shortcomings (No real choice, barren interactivity with the world, bugs...). I didn't really mind it before and don't really mind it now, but with DONTNOD first take at the genre, the standard for Adventure games as been significantly raised now.

Game 26: Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments - 14 hours
PS3

Tried this game out due to PS+. I went in with very low expectations and I thought the game would get deleted after maybe a play session of 15 minutes. Instead, I got a fun adventure game with decent puzzles, good voice acting, a story and scenario that kept you interested and curious as to what was going to happen next. I was happy and surprised to find out that I was right on all the final deductions. Maybe I should become a detective one day.

The problems the game had were technical (on PS3). Long loading times and at times, some stuttering and poor framerate.

Game 6: Metal Gear Solid (PS1) ~ 15 hours
This game is incredible in many ways. I'm amazed at how clever the game is with the way to defeat bosses or accomplish some objectives. I thought the story was really well done, but some characters were repetitive in their dialogue. And the game is kinda long/padded out, especially towards the end imo. But overall, the game has been enjoyable. I can imagine the people who played this game during the PS1 era must have been amazed at all of the gameplay and story elements.

34. Wolfenstein: The Old Blood (PC)
Completed on Bring 'Em On difficulty.

If The Old Blood feels a little bit like more of the same, it's only because its predecessor, Wolfenstein: The New Order, is such a good template to copy from. As a prequel to last year's surprise hit, The Old Blood is a convenient way for MachineGames to bring us more of the adventures of B.J. Blazkowicz without having to resolve the ending of The New Order. Set in 1946, before the assault on Deathshead's compound, The Old Blood lacks the time-bending twists but throws in some occult phenomena of its own to mix things up a little.

Considering it was originally released as a download-only standalone expansion, The Old Blood is surprisingly meaty. While the storytelling is much more streamlined than The New Order--there's no between-missions hub, no cast of characters to converse with, not much in the way of branching storylines--you'll still get a good 7-8 hours out of the campaign, which is more than you can say for most Call of Duty campaigns in recent memory. And though the gameplay doesn't really advance at all beyond the original template MachineGames created for the previous Wolfenstein, there's plenty to see in terms of new environments, thanks to the medieval grandeur of Wolfenstein Keep and the old-world charm of Wolfsburg.

I doubt MachineGames could keep putting out standalone expansions like The Old Blood. The story, as it stands now, would probably yield diminishing returns, as would repeating the same gameplay mechanics. Hopefully the next title is a genuine followup to The New Order, however that might work. But for now, The Old Blood is a welcome addition to the Wolfenstein canon.

Game 29 - Her Story - Started and finished 6/26/15 - 1.5 hours

In between sessions of a much bigger game (Dark Souls 2), I took a break for this thoroughly confusing FMV experiment. The first thirty minutes or so were kinda dull but I eventually got to the point where I figured out there was more going on than I expected and started to get interested. It ended kinda anticlimatically but I don't regret the experience.

Game 30 - Dark Souls 2 - Started 5/11/15, finished 6/28/15 - 48:25

Dark Souls 2 was a good game. Just not a great one, like the first was. Virtually everything suffered in comparison. Level design, monster design, boss design, mechanics, music. I deeply missed the interconnected world and it felt like the levels here were all made in a bubble and then tossed into sequence. Enemy placement was often cheap, favoring groups that all aggro at once. Fighting multiple enemies at once is not this series' strong suit. I just didn't get the same sense of euphoria that I got from Dark Souls. I will say that the DLC level design was significantly better (although as of this writing, I haven't finished it all, mostly because of the bosses are overly difficult HP sponges) but it was still hard not to be disappointed by this, even if I saw it coming.

Games 1 - 22 (updated)

22. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (PS4) - 29th June, approx. 26 hours
I've spent almost a solid month playing this, and while I really enjoyed it at first, I really began to tire of the story and the on-foot stuff by the end. That's probably my own fault, as probably the first 10-15 hours were messing around on the ship and taking over other vessels, while I should have spaced this stuff out a bit more evenly between story missions. I really enjoyed the ship stuff and I found the physics and atmosphere amazing, but the on-foot controls felt so clunky, the combat is really tedious with so little tactical options, the parkour is just too loose with so much room for misdirection and it's surprisingly glitchy. The story was awful and I didn't really care for most of the characters either, as the game kept introducing new ones as late as 2/3 into the game and I couldn't really keep track of who was who. The plot with
The Observatory
was awful, and it feels like the writers don't know what to do with the conflict between the Assassins and Templars. I thought the ending was poor too, and it really soured my opinion on the game as a whole (I mean the actual final level you play;
chapter 12
). The mission design is also very bad, and I was so fed up with tailing missions or listening in on conversations long before the game's end. I'd probably rate the ship aspect 8 or 9/10, and the on-foot stuff a 5 or 6, so to account for the latter dragging down the otherwise excellent former: 7.5/10

Currently playing - MGS: Ground Zeroes, Tetrobot & Co, Yeti Skiing Mountain, Killzone: Shadow Fall (if I can finish it, as it glitched out on me and I couldn't play beyond chapter 7)

Up to 13... Now that it's summer holidays and I have several short games lined up I might be able to play catch up.

Game 11: Democracy 3: Beat the game once, pretty much made a utopia. A really great game which I would recommend. Not for everyone though. It's a pretty nice in depth strategy game. Don't have much else to say. 8 out of 10.

Game 12: Wolfenstein: The New Order: What an excellent fps. Brilliantly designed and I go it pretty cheap as well. You should buy this game. Hated the last boss but everything else was good. The pacing was pretty great. Liked the nice short breaks, chapters without combat. My favourite sections were probably the ones in the concentration camp and the one on the moon. Both were really fun and interesting. Overall 8.5 out of 10.

Game 13: Game Dev Tycoon: Really liked this game. It's also definitely not for everyone. But I had an excellent time and have completed several runs through the game. Made some good games, and will probably continue to play a bit more. 7.5 out of 10

An absolute monster June, where I suddenly had a lot of free time and was able to top off 7 games.

Game 29: Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride (DS) - June 1 - 38 hours
A classic that does absolutely everything right. Turn-based gameplay, next to zero grind, obvious end-goals, tons to do. Adds themes of family, children, marriage and friendship, woven into the main quest to a perfect degree. As a Dad with three kids, it hits on levels other games cannot, and is my new GOTY for 2009 and my new favourite Dragon Quest game.

Game 30: The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth (PS4) - June 7 - 20 hours
Rock solid gameplay, an odd cross of Smash TV and a Roguelike. Could have done without the themes, or piles of nuggetty shit everywhere though. Not one of my favourites.

Game 31: Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition (Vita) - June 10 - 20 hours
Hail to the King, baby! Amazing how quickly the old levels came back to me, I remembered secrets, enemy layouts, everything. A faithful port of a classic from the heyday of shooters.

Game 32: Ducktales Remastered (PS3) - June 18 - 4 hours
Solid platformer, spiced up with the great Ducktales characters and music. Beat it on easy in a weekend, lots of family fun. Another PS Plus Gem I probably would not have bought on my own.

Game 33: Fat Princess: Piece of cake (Vita) - June 23 - 18 hours
Far better than one would think, classic match-three gameplay wrapped in a additional game layer of your little 4-man army escorting said princess. Bright color, good sound effects too.

Game 34: Transformers: Human Alliance (Arcade) - June 26 - 1 hour
Co-op arcade shooter that the wife and I played through in one sitting while at a niece's birthday party in a water park. Fun, short levels, but pretty standard fare for the genre.

Game 35: Jeopardy! (PS3) - June 27 - 26 hours
Very accurate rendition of the trivia show in video game format. Questions taken from previously used ones on TV, I played 51 games and did not run into doubles until the last 4 games or so. Highly recommended if you like the TV show. My 6th Platinum Trophy.

Criteria: Completed all campaign content through up to and including House of Wolves
Time played: 164 hours. :(

I'm pretty certain this is the longest I've ever played a game, that I really don't rate very highly at all. I almost feel like part of why I continued playing it is because it appears to have so much potential, that I somehow expect to enjoy myself more if I just give it another chance. Now that I've exhausted all of the content for it's first season, and look back on it however... I really don't have much positive to say about the experience as a whole. The game has great presentation, but it's ridiculously repetitive nature, and uninsipired encounter design male the game almost bafflingly boring to play. If I didn't have family that I was routinely playing it with, I'm pretty sure I'd have dropped it shortly after finishing the launch campaign content.

Phantasy Star Online, this ain't.

I failed last year, but I'm trying again from the very beginning.

Game 1: Ninja Warriors - June 9th
Finally beat this hard game (on Hard, too). Totally worth it. There's something about ninja cyborgs that gets me going.

Game 2: Wolf Fang - June 28th
I love shooting games, and I love mecha. This has a unique feel with the constant forward moving mechanic, and the vertical stage elements. For an early 90's game is plays and sounds and even looks quite good. Great way to start off my list.

14. Batman: Arkham Knight [PC] 42 hrs (started 6/23/15, completed 6/29/15)
Batman_Arkham_Knight_Cover_Art.jpg

Was so excited for this game, as I've loved the other games in the series. Despite all the performance complaints about the PC version, I only had some occasional stuttering and one crash during my playthrough, even with having a PC slightly below the minimum requirements. Regardless, this game was everything I wanted it to be, having some tragic moments as well as a few properly executed lighthearted ones. The plot definitely demonstrated that Rocksteady understood Batman's numerous themes and worked them eloquently into the story. I 100%ed the game, including riddler challenges, AR challenges, all the side missions, and every achievement. The exception to this is that I haven't done NG+ yet, but I'm waiting to do that and the Harley Quinn DLC until I save up for a new computer, so this is done for now.
10/10 - Definitely my GOTY contender, a masterpiece in thematically strong storytelling.

15. Sid Meier's Civilization V [PC] ~way too many hours
civ5banner.png

So, this one is kinda cheating. On one hand, I've played and "beaten" this before numerous times. On the other hand, I've played it and beaten it this year and haven't used it on one of these lists before. Anyways, I've played a handful of games on Marathon speed this year, just because I had the itch for some Civ. Not much to say other than the game is a fun, addicting, turn-based strategy game.
9/10 - While probably the best Civ yet, it's only slightly improved over 4, and the franchise could use a little revitalization.

BioShock
Duration played: Over the course of two days

So this is a real LTTP. I've been wanting to play this for ages, but was hesitant since I am really, really, really bad at first person shooters. I wanted to experience this game, so i just went with the easy mode.

First thing I noticed was the fact that the game was not as polished as I'm used of games from nowadays. I suppose it's an artifact of the early HD development era. The story and setting were really good (even though I already knew most of the story elements). I did not like the mission structures. They involved just running around on a map while defeating enemies in order to find some random item (it often wasn't very clear how I could find it). Sometimes the game just blatantly said which direction I had to take and sometimes I had to wander around in an area until I gave up and looked at the hints. I'm glad I played it, but I just think the structure of the game is not my jam. I did like the game play elements. The plasmids were awesome.

Also, I don't ever want to hear the phrase "Welcome to the Circus of Values!" again. Ever.

Game #15:

header.jpg

Platform: Steam
Duration: Started 11/04/14 - 06/29/15
Completed: 226 hours. Unlocked all achievements.
Thoughts: One of the best games I spent $5 on (The Binding of Isaac) had a rebirth and boy, did it had me coming back to the basement. While it was a bitch to unlock every achievement due to the RNG, it was worth it to become a Real Platinum God...just in time for the upcoming expansion, "Afterbirth". For those who demand bang for their bucks, definitely get this and you'll be hooked on getting poor ol' Isaac out of that basement.

Finally broke my two month spell of Diablo III and moved on to some other games.

Main post

#27: Mario Kart 8 - 10 hours ★★★★
200cc is a game-changer. 150cc still just felt too slow. Big Blue is so, so good.

#28: Splatoon - 9.5 hours ★★★★
Enjoyed the fact that every campaign mission has its own gimmick. Multiplayer is great fun, but I don't like how the game handles gear at all which soured my interest a bit.

#29: Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition - 7 hours ★★★
Vergil playthrough was fun, but only because of the combat system. I dislike nearly everything else about this game - mission design, pacing, enemies, bosses. Couldn't get into any of the other characters either.

#30: Her Story - 3 hours ★★★★
Brilliant game concept. Even the simplest gameplay mechanics can keep you fully engaged - in this case, listening for, thinking of, writing down, and keeping track of search terms while trying to piece together a murder mystery through interview video clips.

June:

Game 30: Splatoon: Played every level in the singleplayer. I like it. Some clever ideas with the inking. Nice presentation, likable weird characters. And that final boss, man. Dude is freaking amazing. Cool design and music. And the fight itself is great, too. Though it is a litte bit short. But maybe it is for the best befor some ideas start to repeat too often.
Game 31: Color Zen: Completed every puzzle of the 460. It's a good game to relax with. Relaxing music and the puzzles don't require too much brain. What left a negative impression are the unresponsive touch controls and sometimes you couldn't see a ring of colors because it was too thin on the n3DS touchscreen.
Game 32: Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky (PC) Really liked it. The battle system was interesting although it is pretty slow. I liked the cute graphical style but the character portraits felt cheap. The story is interesting but some dialogue sequences stretch a bit too long. Then there's the orbment system. It is similiar to the dschinns in Golden Sun but more complex and confusing. That might be my biggest complaint while the others are minor.
Game 33: Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (PS4): Metal Gear Solid in a open world - I'm not feeling it sadly. Mechanicly I would say it refined MGS 4 mechanics a little bit. It looks good and has a stable framerate. At least I didn't notice any dips. But there are so many spots in the game I said to myself "Oh man, I wish that I could do that/ go thorugh there because there seems to be a route. While it isn't bad and the camp you're infiltrating is beatifully crafted, I'm somehow disappointed and less hyped for Phantom Pain.
Game 34: Metal Slug 3 (PC): Played in coop. Great game and beatiful pixelwork. Can't say much about the soundtrack because I had to mute it because otherwise I wouldn't have understand voice chat. I liked the setpieces, too, but sometimes the screen gets so swarmed with bullets and objects that it gets confusing as hell.

Currently playing: Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix HD (PS3), Final Fantasy IX (PSVita)

Don't think I'll be able to beat the two games I'm currently playing today. So here's my June update.

So we're at the halfway point and I'm only at 17 games.

I have played Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Dragon Quest 4 (and am in the middle of Trails in the Sky) though which all ate up a lot of time. If I focus on shorter action games and the like maybe I can still catch up...

First two games of June, with MP3 being my favourite game so far this year. To think I played this in preparation of E3 and the possible new Metroid announcements. ;_;

Game 24: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - 4,5/5 - 16:15 hours (08/06/15)
In52ryS.jpg

Completed the game with 100% power-ups, but missing a bunch of scans. Amazing conclusion to one of the highest quality series in gaming. I loved the planet jumping and the new ship mechanics, they feel fresh and innovative, even though they have their cons: both are underdeveloped. The planet jumping could have made for an even more interesting and intricate level design, instead the game feels more streamlined and objective-based than the previous entries: that's good because the backtracking is kept to a minimum (Echoes was horrible in this regard), but you can feel the environments somehow lack the thrill of mystery and the sense of going towards the unknown typical of Metroid. The ship works wonders as a warp point and moving save point, the upgades are nice, the grapple beam moreso than the missiles, however the upgrades themselves are underemployed and the interactions inside the ship are underwhelmingly futile. The weapon management is also streamlined, with upgrades stacking on top of each other, severely cutting back on battle strategy in favour of the hyper mode, which doesn't fully convince and feels a simple way to brute force your way out of any kind of fight (add on that the much less diverse enemies, now feeling more bullet-sponge than ever). Motion controls are great for aiming, and I found the grapple beam mechanics a nice yet kinda wonky addition, while buttons, levers and switches using motion technology aren't anything hot. I'm appalled that missable scans for minor enemies are still a thingespecially now that we've got 30 pretty uninspired space pirate variations, though the satellite system you access in the late game to track the secret items is a welcomed addition. The bosses are cool, but not as much as in Echoes, the final boss in particular feels too easy, underdelivering both battle and story-wise. The plot itself ties up everything quite well, expanding the lore of the series in new and exciting directions.

Game 25: Nidhogg - 1,5/5 - 01:05 hours (13/06/15)
header.jpg

Beaten the single player, played online multiplayer (Steam's community is kinda dead though :/). The game's fine, the animations are nice, the style employed interesting, but the game ultimately ends up being quite limited and boring, because there's just not enough options, both mode-wise and combat-wise. Once you learn the 5-6 kind of attacks and tactics the game offers you, everything gets stale quick, even in multiplayer. Seeing the simplicistic gameplay of the game, the developer should have tried to add as many stages, hazards, enemy types, weapons, traps and different modes as possible. One thing that bummed me is that the game basically rewards people who flee instead of fighting: trying to outrun your enemy is oft a less risky strategy than engaging in actual fencing.

Game #15: Fallout Shelter
hHvtkRi.jpg

Rating: ★★★★☆ - Platform: Mobile - Developer: Bethesda
I think this is only the 2nd mobile game I really get into after the inevitable Angry Bird a few years ago and I'm really enjoying it. This game is addictive, fun and I didn't get bored even after playing many hours with it. The progress is slow sometimes, at least for me, but you can't help it but wanting to grow your dweller population to get more rooms and increase the size of your shelter. Cool game !

Game 41: Lord of Magna: Maiden Heaven
Playtime: 43:27
Start/Finish: May 31st, 2015 - June 9th, 2015
// Really solid game but a lot of disappointing stuff. It feels incomplete, there's like 7 endings but they're all the same.. Battle system is fun but needs some polish. The soundtrack was the absolute best part of the game, amazing stuff.

Start/Finish: June 11th, 2015 - June 12th, 2015
// Said I'd play this earlier this year and now I finally did. Did Selvaria's and Edy's DLC missions. The Edy one was whatever.. Selvaria's was great though. Even had some great story scenes to go along with it.

Game 43: Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker
Playtime: 50:02
Start/Finish: May 5th, 2015 - June 17th, 2015
// I don't get why people say this is worse than the first game. Enjoyed this one a lot more than the first game. The characters, story, battle etc were all better to me.

Game 44: Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker - Triangulum Arc
Playtime: 25:16
Start/Finish: June 17th, 2015 - June 21st, 2015
// Counting this separate since this wasn't in the original game. This arc is much better than the septentrione arc, good closure for the game. Left me wanting for more Devil Survivor though, wonder if a third game is even possible at this point.

Game 45: Tales of the Abyss
Playtime: 55:45
Start/Finish: April 22nd, 2015 - June 24th, 2015
// My third Tales game. Nothing really special about this one besides the great story. Luke is one of the best protagonists I've played as so far though.

Game 46: Fire Emblem if (白夜王国)
Playtime: 29:51
Start/Finish: June 24th, 2015 - June 29th, 2015
// Awakening was my GOTY for 2013, this one somehow tops it. First story-heavy Japanese game I've finished, pretty proud of that. It's gotten to the point where I can understand most of the text. The game was great, better characters, better story, better features. Just a really fun game, already playing through Nohr now.

I ran out of room in my original post (and I was so close to finishing!)

46. Grow Home - 4 hours 54 minutes
#Some one took the idea of Jack and the Bean Stock and made it into a collectathon and it's amazing. Riding the budding plant and making a tangle of branches not only looks great, but it's a great way to move around. It was a wonderful little game that made me want to explore and collect all the crystals and seeds.

47. The Stanley Parable - 2 hours 30 minutes
#What an experience. It's amazing how not only narrative dialog changes based on decisions each playthrough but also the level design changes occasionally, walking out of Stanley's office can bring a variety of different office designs, sometimes a hallway sometimes a larger office spaces, and sometimes straight to the two doors. The game is handled with a ton of humor in the variety of options and dialog paths. I don't think I discovered everything, but I was starting to get repeated sequences (although sometimes they would lead me to different outcomes) and I thought it was time to walk away, having my fill, which in the end is sort of the message, don't be a button pusher anymore! Excellent!

48. Ori and the Blind Forest - 6 hours 24 minutes
# Sublime. The only design error is that there are parts of the map that get locked away (dungeons) after certain events which can be extremely frustrating if you want to go back and explore those areas or didn't finish exploring them before finishing it. Forlorn Ruins is the biggest offender of this. That being said I finished with 96% completion.

49. Ephemerid: A Musical Adventure - 45 minutes
# I was expecting something along the lines of Franz Kafka's Rock Opera in terms of amazement, and I was not disappointed. The score is amazing. The scenes are great and the construction paper art style is fabulous. There's not much challenge to game play as you're not hindered by missing beats. You can click along to the rhythm, but I don't think it's necessary although there is an achievement. Really worth checking out.

50. NiGHTS into Dreams - 3 hours 42 minutes
#It's okay. I think GiantBomb gives it a little too bad of a rep, but fans give are very forgiving. There's not much indication of how the game mechanics work unless you play it for few hours (the game only last a few hours), and while I finished it, I still don't know the nuances really, except fly through rings. I was completely lost at to what I was suppose to do until I saw a video. Ehhh... It's not as bad as my original impression which I thought it was a down right disaster, but it's not one of the greatest of all time. Interesting experiment though.

51. Volgarr the Viking - 7 hours 54 minutes
#Holy crap. Lots of memorization and retries. It's 6 AM. I wanted to finish this and show the game who's boss. Last level wasn't as bad as others. It was really rewarding. I'm really tired... One more game to go (I'm working on a good one).

52. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D - 28 hours 47 minutes
#What a way to end this year's challenge. I've always had an extreme fondness for Majora's Mask although I've never gotten past what is basically the tutorial until this year. Everytime I've started the game, and I've started it quite a few times, I've put the game down after Link gets the ocarina; it wasn't out of boredom or dislike, I just became distracted by other life events. This year. with the release of the remake, I made a goal to finish what I've considered to be one of the greatest Zelda games, and after finally finishing it (I've been working on it for a couple months now), I can finally validate the opinion I held all these years. It is one of if not the best Zelda games. Zelda really flourishes when the developers leave the traditional path. Majora's Mask setting, cast, mechanics, and plot are, so abstract, unique, absurd, and surreal that it creates an experience like no other. I have just 3 more entries in the main series to say that I've played all the main Zelda games (Link's Awakening and the Oracle games).

54. Papo y Yo - 2 hours 48 minutes
# The Monster's animations were pretty depressing. Pretty simple indie puzzle-platformer with what I thought to be an okay handling of an extremely personal story. I think some of the allusions were a little too heavy handed, especially when they stopped being allusions, and I'm not sure the mechanics were really used in a way that benefited the story (I can't recall if the frogs were ever used by the boy intentionally, but there were times the frogs' effect on Monster was used to the advantage of the boy. I actually cannot recall if any of the puzzles/solutions are found through when the Monster is enraged, except for the very last scene where you intentionally feed frogs to the monster). I thought the endings message was well done except for parts where the allusions turn into the objects they were alluding too and the building a bridge scene which I'm not sure what metaphorical purpose that had. I'm also not sure if the majority of environmental puzzles which revolved around moving floating buildings and changing the landscape has any metaphorical purpose or was just thought to be a cool puzzle mechanic (it could represent the boy moving around frequently from home to home, but I don't think there's any evidence of that). It was alright.

55. Burnout Paradise - 9 hours
# I got the elite license which I guess could be considered the end game if you're not going for 100%, but I don't want to go any farther. The game can be fun, but it's also really frustrating as there is no road markers indicating you're going the right way when in a race and you can often turn down the wrong alley, and slow motion crashes which are fun at first can lead to constant frustration as it slows the pace of the game and the cutscene of your car crashing varies. A lot of races often lead to the countryside where there's not much going on around there. Also it seems like events reset after every license, so you're usually replaying the same race route multiple times.
Status: Beaten - 7/21/2015

56. The Witcher - 33 hours
#I wanted to play through the Witcher trilogy although I'm not sure playing through the first game was the best idea. It's really archaic, frustrating, and tedious. The plot doesn't pick up until around the end of chapter 3 (There are 5 chapters). I'm hoping the other games are better.
Status: Beaten - 7/29/2015

57. Her Story - 5 hours
#This is the perfect game to play with another person, especially a significant other, the asynchronous story played out through keyword searches leads to developing conspiracy moments and many shocking reveals. It's definitely one of my favorite games that released this year.
Status: Beaten - 8/22/2015

58. The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings - ~25 hours
# This was a vast improvement over the first Witcher game. While it was a shorter more controlled experience, the overall artistic design, story, quests, and combat were leagues above anything that was in the first game; still there the lack of a sprint, quick travel, or horse made some quests feel tedious as they involved constant journey's across the map. The third game looks to exponentially improve on this (I've been watching my girlfriend wander around the third game while I was finishing up the second).
Status: Beaten - 9/22/2015

59. Amnesia: The Dark Descent - ~4 hours
# The game lacks any tension once you realize that if you're killed by a monster the monster doesn't respawn near you; therefore, the game becomes a game of sprinting around the monster with no real consequence of it killing you. The first few times you encounter a monster, yes, it's quite scary, but the effect wears off towards the end of the game. Also the sanity meter doesn't make things more spooky, just nauseating as the screen warps and blurs, obstructing view of the atmospheric castle. It's disappointing. Hopefully, A Machine for Pigs or SOMA can resolve my issues.
Status: Beaten - 9/30/2015

60. Neverending Nightmares - ~1 hour
# Continuing the horror theme for October, Neverending Nightmares is a short but extremely creepy game, both in terms of sound design and art design. There are two areas to the game and they can begin to become repetitious towards the end, but the areas begin to blend in a nightmarish fashion which is creates a freshness to the decay. Surprisingly, the game has multiple ending paths although I'm not sure I can say I will be going back to replay as like Amnesia once you understand the enemy design the encounter don't hold as much tension although encounters are required to progress, unlike Amnesia.
Status: Beaten - 10/01/2015

61. Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs - ~4 hours
#The story was better than the originals, involving a societal culling to prevent future death, and really wonderfully bizarre notes are left around the world----take, for example, this sentence from a note: "We have created a world where man is so utterly debased he will spray his seed over passers-by." It was a shorter more straightforward game than the original Amnesia. There was barely any exploration to be had as most rooms and cupboards had locks barring entry which was a shame as the exploratory nature was one of the original's strength. I think the monster design was a tad better than the originals although this was marred by the monster AI which creates less tension than in the original. Like the original, the spooky atmosphere can only amount to so much, but when you're never in any real immediate threat all tension is sucked away.
Status: Beaten - 10/3/2015

62. The Cat Lady - 7 hours 12 minutes
#An adventure game dealing with the issue of mental illness. The imagery and sound design (outside of the terrible soundtrack) is perturbing, and for the most part the script captures the subject well although intermixed with that is the hopeful, "I'm all better and have learned my lesson after a failed suicide". The latter part always feels like a cop out to a story about severe depression. The gameplay delves into the adventure genre although for the majority of the game feels like a visual novel. Puzzles are more logical, but this could also be due to the fact that you don't click around static rooms to find intractable objects, but move left and right until an arrow indicates you can interact with an object. There are some mechanics like a panic/relief meter that disappears after chapter 2.
Status: Beaten 10/12/2015

63. Betrayer - 8 hours 42 minutes
#It seems like a cool premises, landing in pre-colonial america and finding deserted forts and wilderness filled with dead spaniards, natives, skeletons, and lost souls; however, the monotonous combat and objectives of finding simple objects scattered in each of the seven open areas creates a tedium that sets and stays in early. Unfortunately, the combat and objectives were so mundane that I didn't bother paying attention to the text that establishes a story after the second area. A neat idea but tedious until the end. The game tries to sell itself of intense combat scenarios but after about the 4th area the character is so powerful that you'll be charging enemies instead of sneaking around them.

Status: Beaten - 11/12/2015

70. Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed - 11 hours 30 minutes
# I finished all 5 world tour cups on hard difficulty and unlocked the Superstar Showdown cup (6th mirror cup) and expert difficulty. I played the majority of Superstar Showdown; however, the level unlocks required too many stars, earned by winning prior challenges on expert, so I've decided to stop. I got a credits screen after completing the first 5 world cups, but I had a hard enough time on hard, so I don't want to go down the road of expert. This game is not Mario Kart. The tracks are not as polished, being too claustrophobic and cluttered causing frequent drops in momentum, and the characters are less memorable--these two factors are the heart and blood of character kart racers. The gimmick of this racer is the transforming vehicles and the race tracks that transverse different mediums--land, air, and water. I found the shift into boating cumbersome and tedious as you have less control in water and you're more prone to hitting rocks or the sides of the course. All too often I found myself hitting the sides or invisible walls near the edge of the course and losing all momentum. There are specialized events that offer something different from the traditional races which is a good feature. It's fun for a kart racer, but when I have Mario Kart 8 sitting on my shelf, I don't need this.

71. Cities Skylines - 32 hours
#First time going in depth with a city builder game, and I enjoyed it for the most part. Once my City reached 80,000 citizens it became a slog of trying to figure out why growth was stagnating and unlocking buildings. I wish the game would give better instructions on the various interactions within the city. For example, parks lower the want for shopping causing stagnation in Commercial zones, and when your city is highly educated, unemployment rises because everyone wants office jobs, not industrial work. It became a more of a game that idles in the background while I wait for stats and numbers to increase (it's idling in the background right now). After completing all the requirements for unique buildings and monuments and hitting 100,000 citizens I'm going to put this game to rest. Maybe I'll dig it back up to play with mods which there are a ton.

72. Gunstar Heroes - 3 hours
#Pretty fun shoot 'em up. The homing upgrade (green) + rapid fire (orange) make is a pretty big exploit to making the game super easy.
Status: Beaten - 11/24/2015

73. Cibele - 1 hour 27 minutes
#The autobiographical voyeuristic nature of the game detailing Nina Freeman's early teenage sex life left me with a feeling of ambivalence. Nostalgia when reading her old blog posts and IMs about my early teenage blogs and IM conversations and uneasiness when clicking through folders viewing Nina's childhood pictures. A lot of the game I felt I was overstepping certain boundaries, invading a private conversation.
Status: Beaten - 12/17/2015

74. Bloodborne + The Old Hunters DLC - 33 hours 37 minutes
#FromSoftware has found the winning formula. While their games are becoming annualized, the core gameplay is so well refined that it's not losing its luster has fast as some annualized series has. Bloodborne mixes the Souls formula by exchanging shields for fast dodging, creating an almost new combat experience for those who tanked their way. A shift from medieval fantasy to Victorian horror fills the game with an even greater dread than found wandering the corridors of the Souls series. Most bosses have similar beastly forms and wails which are grating but also fit the atmosphere. I was in line to finish the main game within 20 hours, but playing the DLC took about 10. The final boss of the DLC takes a few hours to last long enough to learn his skill set in both forms, and then another few hours to act on your knowledge and finish him.

Game #29 - The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings (PC) - 27/06/15

This was one of the four reasons why I didn't finish any games in May (the others being work, Ether One's save corrupting and Witcher 3). I was enjoying it, though it wasn't the most compelling RPG I had played, but I just couldn't get it done in time for Witcher 3, so thinking I was familiar enough with the characters, story and setting, I jumped straight over to Witcher 3. Turned out I was both right and wrong. Right in that Witcher 3 didn't really require much knowledge of Witcher 2 anyway but wrong in that I'd really only dipped into the shallow end of Witcher 2, something I only figured out after finishing Witcher 3 and coming back to it.

Having a much greater understanding of the politics of the region made me appreciate the story that much more and while the gameplay is still pretty weak, it was easy to push through those flaws for a story that I was really starting to enjoy. Unlike a lot of games that market themselves on the choices you make, Witcher 2's choices didn't feel like an obvious black or white choice that, in reality, wouldn't have any influence over the story at all and when I went back and played through the other path, I was rarely left disappointed at just how little my choices mattered.

I think my only real problem with the game was that I frequently encountered the crash to desktop bug when trying to load a save from in-game. I get that deleting a lot of them should've solved this but I also wanted to keep some of them too and doing it from in-game often led to it crashing as well.

Game #30 - Ether One (PS4) - 29/06/15

As mentioned above, I tried to play this in May but to my great frustration, when I was over half way through the game, my save became corrupted and I lost all my progress. I was too annoyed to go back to it at the time but a couple of days ago, I decided to give it another go and this time, didn't encounter any problems.

I thought Ether One was a pretty cool adventure game. Without knowing the developers back story, it came across like it could've easily been a personal story from one of them and that made it fairly intriguing. The puzzles were pretty cool, often taking some effort (or online help...) to solve. And I quite liked the setting and level design.

It's a real pity the game came out in the state it did, presumably because Sony were forcing them to rush to get it in PS+, because it's not a bad game. If they'd just pushed it back a month, I doubt I (and a lot of others) would've had that bad initial experience and could've judged the game for what it is, not the myriad of technical problems it had.

Game #31 - Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People (PS3) - 30/06/15

This was one of the older Telltale series that I never got around to playing back when it came out, so it was pretty cool to go back and play a more traditional adventure game after the deluge of story focused series from them since The Walking Dead became a big hit. I'd never really bothered to watch any Strong Bad material but I liked the goofy world and characters, it gave them a lot of freedom to just mess around with each episode, making the re-use of settings far less annoying than some of Telltale's other efforts (especially Back to the Future). And the best part? I'm pretty sure this is the first Telltale game I've played that's run at a consistently high framerate on consoles.

Currently Playing
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (PS4)

I've already finished Witcher 3 once but I want to get a Death March playthrough done to get the platinum and feel like I've really completed it. Once that's done, I've got Splinter Cell: Blacklist and Final Fantasy: Type-0 in the wings.

Game 14: Treasures of Montezuma: Blitz: Got all the upgrades and played about 8 hours. With no end to the game that's enough for me. Will never get all the trophies, as they require them to play 100 hours. Not happening. I've had my fill. It's a pretty standard match 3 game. 5.5 out of 10.

Game 15: Jazzpunk: What a strange interesting game. Honestly I felt I was about half way through the game and then it ended. Easily beatable in about 45 minutes if you do no side stuff. Side stuff is where the best stuff is. I laughed out loud several times. It was a fun adventure game. But I beat the game with about 2/3 of the side stuff done in around 2 hours. Would have like a bit more, but still fun while it lasted. 6.5 out of 10.

Really speeding up now, thankfully. Should have another game done by the end of the week. Working on Fire Emblem Awakening and a few other games.

Game #1: World of Warcraft

Time: 60+ Hours in 2015, and WAY too many to even discuss in prior years.

I have two max characters, a Deathknight and Shaman. I have raided as DPS and Tank. Have done most of the content up to the current patch, however I do not believe I will continue playing this game as I have moved on to another MMO.

Game #2: Hyrule Warriors

Time : Approx 12 to 17 hours.

The game does get repetitive, however the variety in weapons and characters keep things fresh. I also love the advancement system and crafting within the game, it gives it a hybrid moba/musou/hack and slash/rpg feel.

Game #3 Sunset Overdrive

Time: Approx 12 Hours

Impression: I have completed the campaign. It was fun, however not really all that memorable. The travelling system, trans-versing the city on rails and big jumps as well as the weapon variety were the highlights of the game for me. The borderlands 'esque' art was well done, otherwise the graphics were average. The humor was good in some points and overly middle school at others. They tried too hard to be funny, if that makes sense. Online was really not that inspiring either, however I will admit that I tried it before unlocking several fun weapons.

Game #4: Fire Emblem Awakening

Time: 35 Hours

Absolutely my favorite game thus far on the 3ds. I loved the story, the badass characters and the depth of the RPG Elements. This game simply rules! Chrom, Lon Que, and Gregor just shredded everyone as I progressed. Love this game, and eagerly await the next one!

Game #5: Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3Ds

Time: Approx 15 Hours (More if you count my kids, it gets to 20 or so)

Impression: The roster is just a blast to experiment with. Had some fun with casual online matches, games with me and the kids are a ton of fun. Couch coop at its very best! Not alot of time with competitive stuff or solo gameplay yet. I have unlocked every stage and character at this point.

Game # 6: GTA V PC

Time: Approx 28 hours

The open world masterpiece. This game is my favorite game of 2015 by a long shot. I love the online heists, I have completed the coop heist and one of the 4 player heists. This game is so good. The driving mechanics are passable, the gun handling is average at best but the overall feel and sense of crazy world happenings is unmatched by any game in my opinion.

Game #7 World of Tanks

Time: Approx 60 Hours

This game is very hit or miss for most people. I do love the physics of the gameplay and the detail with which they handle the various canons on the different countries armor. A run and gun FPS player's nightmare, a true team oriented combat experience. This game can be insanely addictive once you start down various tech lines. In 2015 I unlocked the Leopard 1 and I have recently pushed to a t-54.

Game# 8: Final Fantasy 14 (PC)

Time: Approx 20 Hours in 2015 over 70 in 2014.

I have been impressed with the visuals and combat animations for this game. The FOREVER long global cooldown is frustrating, but once you have planned out a rotation it starts to really make sense. They way the game constantly serves up something to do is really well done, better than in many competing MMO games. I have a 37 Dragoon and a 30 Summoner.

Game # 9: Metro Last Light

Time: Approx 10 Hours

Generic FPS. Great grapics with my GTX 680. Really nothing innovative or exciting to see here. I bought the game to test out my GPU when I bought it, but just now am finishing the game. I do think the "Ranger" mode is the most fun however, especially in comparison to the original 2033 gameplay.

Game# 10: Game of Thrones - A Telltale Game Series

Time : 4 hours

I am only through episode 2 and starting 3. I am a GOT junkie and love every bit of this game. The shocking endings and real Game of Thrones setting.. love every single second of this! This game really has me itching to play all of the TellTale games from the Walking dead onwards through the most recent Borderlands adaptation.

Game # 11: MGS V: Ground Zeroes (PC)

Time: Approx 4 Hours

Great demo/teaser for the full game later on. PC graphics are possibly the best I have seen.. the rain and vegetation, the explosions.. the character modelling.. just amazing graphics done right. This is the true stealth combat experience that sets the bar for this style of play. The new open world direction is a perfect risk for the series to take. Cannot wait for the full game.

Game #12: Wolfenstein: The New Order

Time: Approx 17 Hours

The best shooter I have played in the last two years. The gunplay is phenomenal, I loved the over the top story, many may find it too far fetched however I found it refreshing and I enjoyed the pseudo steam punk elements to the technology. Some of the characters were too off, however the voice acting was stellar. The cut scenes were above average for a fast paced FPS. Great flashes of gory, sadistic Nazi killing of the finest order!

Game # 13 MGSV: The Phantom Pain

Time: Approx 100 Hours

Best stealth game I have ever played. The story was a fractured mess in my opinion, but the gameplay certainly made up for the story's shortcomings. Love the open world, they dynamic missions where any and every option or tool can be used to complete them. Big Boss... in all his glory!

In Progress:
Batman Arkham Knight
Middle - Earth Shadow of Mordor
Wolfenstein: The Old Blood
The Wolf Among Us

June:

Game 27: Cloudberry Kingdom
A hard game that at the same time never treats the player unfairly. The nature of the levels really help to mitigate the frustration with constant deaths. I reached a point where the game basically told me I've hit my skill level and I feel great about it. A genuine surprise.

Game 28: Skulls of the Shogun
I really like tactical combat games but for some reason I really disliked the combat system of this game. Maybe it's the art or the pace of the combat but as a game I felt bored playing it.

Game 29: Super Exploding Zoo
Great game that came out of nowhere. Puzzles with real time combat + strategy that really hit all the checkboxes with me.

Game 30: Payday 2
If EA tried to pull the shit Overkill pulled with this game they would be killed by everyone (fans and press). Basically it's a game that forces you to upgrade your character to have the best gadgets and skills in the game. Start now and good luck finding a lobby where people don't kick you out because as a level 1 you are pretty useless for the hardest heists. Gunplay isn't great either and the heists are not as varied as they should. Frankly this is a 4 out of 10 game especially because of the structure behind the skill tree in this game.

35. Her Story (PC)
Credits rolled, and based on the spoiler thread, I think I got nearly all the details of the story. 75% of the clips viewed.

It's exceedingly hard to discuss Her Story in detail without spoiling the story, so I'll just say this: as a mystery/adventure game, Her Story is fantastic, with just one major issue: it's hard to know when you're "done" without literally watching every single clip, and you don't really need to watch every clip to figure out most of what's going on. There's no goal, really, beyond figuring out what happened, but even that changes shape over the course of the game.

If Her Story sounds even remotely interesting to you, I highly encourage you to check it out.

Game #16: Killzone Shadow Fall
Yn4U2Ql.jpg

Rating: ★★★★☆ - Platform: PS4 - Guerrilla Games
I really enjoyed Killzone Shadow Fall, the game is inconsistent in its difficulty and the story is not the best of course but many others aspects of the game just clicked with me. It looks gorgeous, probably one of the most beautiful game I have ever play and the atmosphere and sound of some chapter are just fantastic with a very special mention for chapter 5. Good Surprise.

Driveclub (PS4) - 02/07/15 (Main tour + Ignition)
I really enjoyed the game, I fell very confortable with this style between arcade racer and a more real simulator. But for sure isn't for everyone. The grafics are amazing and gameplay is fun with the mini archivements inside the same race. On the other way I feel they didn´t sold me the whole game, for sure I will pay a little more for the DLC but I'm not sure which one to pick.

Late post but hope I can still join the challenge. Just was recently granted posting privileges:

1. Assassin's Creed Unity
Completed Main Story 1/7/15: Time 29 hours

Got this game as party of the AC Xbox one bundles from 2014. Played this right after playing Black Flag. Like many others, I thought Black Flag was a better game, but Unity was fine in its own right. Not outstanding, just solid. This was only the 3rd AC game I've played (the original which I quit as it bored me and Black Flag being the other two). Thankfully I didn't have series fatigue, but out of the three Black Flag is the only one that I thought was a great game. I doubt I will be picking up this series again for awhile.

2. Titanfall (XB1)
Played for ~25 hours multiplayer

Bought this in December when it and the season pass was on sale for ~$12.50. Was disappointed in it. Kept playing hoping I would like it more, but it just never clicked for me. Am glad that I got it on fire sale as oppossed to paying $60 for it. I will admit, I like CoD better. This just didn't do much for me

3. Sunset Overdrive (XB1)
Completed Main Story 1/21/15: Time 22 hours

Great new IP. One of the better games this generation. I would recommend this game to any XB1 owner, esp for the price you can usually get it at now. I now sales were not chartbusters, but I hope they were strong enough to warrant a sequel.

4. Captain Toad Treasure Tracker (WiiU)
Completed Main story 1/28/15: TIme 7 hours

Picked this up as I loved this side content in 3D World. Very fun game, lighthearted and good graphics for the Wii U. Perfect game to pick up and play when you have an urge to play and relax.

5. Dying LIght (PS4)
Completed Main Story 2/2/15 Time: 40 hours

Fun game with an excellent parkour playing style to it. For me I had a bit of a learning curve in the beginning, but once I started leveling up and getting better/stronger weapons, the 2nd half of the game was a lot easier for me. The day night cycle was done a lot better in this game than Dead Rising 3 (which I'll be coming to later) and had more meaningful consequences to the game play.

6. Dark Dreams Don't Die (XB1)
Completed Main Story 2/12/15. Time 5 hours

Got this via Games with Gold or otherwise I doubt I would have picked this up. Made good use of the Kinect. I didn't think it was a great game, or great story. If there is a sequel, I will not be picking it up right away, maybe on sale.

7. Diablo III: Reaper of Souls (XB1)
Completed Main Story 2/21/15. Time 19 hours

I skipped Diablo II, and this was the first version of Diablo III I had played. Had a good time with it. I typically play games on the "Normal" setting, but this game is way too easy on "Normal." Still have it on my hard drive and will probably pick it up and play from time to time as it really is a fun game

8. Halo: Combat Evolved
Completed Main Story 2/24/15: 12 hours

Replayed this as part of the MCC for the first time since I got an OG Xbox back in 2004. Went through on Heroic setting which is the first (and only) time I've played a Halo Campaign on any setting but Normal. I had forgotten that some of the levels get a little repetitive. Probably my least favorite Halo campaign (I have not played Reach)

9. The Order 1886 (PS4)
Completed Main story 2/25/15: 7 hours

When I had first seen the previews for this game a couple of years ago, it was the one I had marked on my list to buy a PS4 when it comes out. The graphics and the potential for the story hooked me. As time got closer, it looked like it was going to fall short of my initial expectations so I tempered them some. I'm glad I did. I won't bash the game as I did like it. The only thing that disappointed me were the Lycan battles, but in the back of my mind, I'm still a little let down as I had originally hoped for so much more, and I doubt we get any kind of a sequel.

10. Halo 2 Anniversary
Completed Main Story 2/28/15: 9 hours

The updated graphics, esp cutscenes are amazing. Played this right after playing Halo: CE and made me realize how much more I liked Halo 2.

11. Guacamelee Super Turbo CHampionship Edition(PS4)
Completed Main Story 3/2/15: 6 hours

Got this cheap on a PSN sale. Good solid Metroidvania game. Was a bit surprised how much I liked it.

12. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (XB1)
Completed Main Story (6 hours) and played about 35 hours multiplayer

I don't buy Call of Duty every year (Have only played CoD4, Black Ops I and II and now AW) so franchise fatique hasn't hit me when I played this. I enjoyed the game and thought it was the best campaign I played since CoD4. The MP is CoD with the exosuit mechanic. I didn't think the exosuit mechanic was that good, but it seems to be the way things are going with the initial previews of Black Ops III.

13. Infamous: Second Son (PS4)
Completed Main Story 3/16/15: 12 hours

Good game, but I think the Infamous series could use a little bit more time in the oven before they come out with the next one.

14. Rayman Legends (XB1)
Completed Main Story 3/18: 11 hours

Got this via GwG. Very fun platformer. THe "Black Betty" level was sublime. First Rayman game I've ever played and will try another if/when it comes out.

15. Lord of the RIngs: Shadow of Mordor (XB1)
Completed Main Story 3/20/15: 19 hours

This was a nice game, and I enjoyed the story, but I will admit, I don't see how it won game of the year awards. Maybe I was a little burnt out on playing open-world games at the time as I played several in the previous 4-5 months. (had played Black Flag, Unity, Dying Light, Sunset Overdrive, some of GTAV on PS3, Infamous: SS to name a few) Didn't think the Nemesis system was all that great either.

16: Wolfenstein: The New Order (PS4)
Completed Main Story 3/21/15: 16 hours

Solid FPS campaign. Was nice to see as so many FPS put all their efforts into the MP and blow off the SP/campaign mode.

17: Bloodborne (PS4)
Completed Main story 4/1/15; Platinum Trophy 4/15/15: Total time 94 hours

Fantastic game. This is the first Souls game I've played. Loved it. This is the only game that I wanted to do everything possible and thus achieved my very first Platinum trophy/1000 gamerscore in a game. Cannot say enough good things about this game

18. Dead Rising 3 Apocolypse Edition (XB1)
Completed Main story and 4 survior stories DLC: 4/21/15: Total time 15 hours

Was kinda let down by this game. This was the first game this generation that I felt like I had to push my way through the game just to say I beat it and 'get my money's worth.' I am glad I got this 1/2 off. Maybe I am treating it unfairly as I started it right after completing Bloodborne and playing it in a rotation with......

19. Ori and the Blind Forest (XB1)
Completed Main Story 4/26/15: 8 hours

Great game. Best platformer/Metroidvania style game I've played in years. Another "must-have" for XB1 owners. The graphics are beautiful and the story is told perfectly for this game. And it hits you. The sense of accomplishment when you make a through a challenging section is right up there with Bloodborne.

20. Halo 3
Completed Main Story 5/2/15: 7 hours

Replayed this game for the first time in years. I really enjoy Halo 3 and out of the "main" games, 2 and 3 are a step above 1 and 4 IMO. Good campaign that had brought a good sense of closure. I liked the "revelation" of who the Forerunners were (I use quotation marks as it was obvious that was what they had been hinting at all long) a lot more than after the recon that happened.

21. Bayonetta (WiiU)
Completed Main Story 5/8/15: 9 hours

I missed this game on the last generation. Got this packed-in when I bought Bayonetta 2 after reading the reviews and getting it in a BOGO sale. (Bayonetta 2 is still in my backlog). Fun game in the Devil May Cry/Ninja Gaiden genre of action games, but I think I like the other two better, but will see if Bayonetta 2 can improve on the original.

22. Far Cry IV (XB1)
Completed Main story, DLC missions and Valley of the Yeti 5/12/15: Total TIme 38 hours

This was my first Far Cry game and had a blast with it. While Bloodborne has been my favorite game this generation, this comes in firmly at 2nd (so far). I usually don't drop money on DLC, but when the season pass was 1/2 off, I bit. The Valley of the Yeti DLC made it worth the money. The fort defense sequences were good changes of pace in the DLC as compared to the main game.

23. Mortal Kombat X (PS4)
Completed Main Story: 5/13/15: Played several towers and online matches: Total TIme 23 hours

THis is the first Mortal Kombat game I've picked up since the first one (I'm not into fighters usually and if I am, I'm more of a Street Fighter guy). Great SP mode(s) for a fighter. Much better package (SP and MP) than the next fighter I'll talk about in the list

24. Resident Evil Revelations 2 (PS4)
Completed all episodes 5/20/15: Total TIme 8 hours

This is the first Resident Evil I've enjoyed since 4. I quit 5 as I hated it, and rented 6 and stopped playing after an hour. I didn't play the first RE: Revelations so I might have liked it. I thought they presented the game well with the episodic format, but I hope this doesn't become their new normal as I dont think it will work multiple times trying it.

25: State of Decay (XB1)
Completed main story in Vanilla and played a copule of rounds of Breakdown: Total Time 23 hours

THis is a fun game. One of the most interesting takes on the zombi Apocalypse genre as it's not just running and gunning down zombies, but it's all about how you will survive as a community. Keeping this on my harddrive to keep playing Breakdown and to try out the Lifeline content.

26. Forza Horizon 2: Fast and Furious (XB1)
Completed main quest/story: TIme spent 3 hours

GOt this when they were giving it out for free. I have FH2, but haven't completed it yet. This was great side content, but am glad it was free as ultimately, it's little more than a demo for a *very good* racing game

27. The Wolf Among Us (PS4)
Completed main quest/story 6/4/15: Time spent 9 hours

Got this on a Flash sale. This is the first Telltale "game" I've played. Amazing story. I really enjoyed the lore and have been considering to pick up and read the Fables comics. Got Season 1 of the Walking Dead during the same sale and looking forward to it now

28. Ultra Street FIghter IV (PS4)
Completed arcade mode with a couple of characters and played online matches. Total time spent 8 hours

I'm not a serious player so the technical issues didn't bother me that much.I have to admit that after Mortal Kombat X, I was kinda let down by this game and when I feel like a fighter, I go back to MKX. That said, I"m sure I will still buy SFV.

29. Halo ODST
Completed Main Story 6/26/15: TIme 9 hours

Got this for free for being an early adopter (insert beta-tester joke here) of Halo: MCC. Had not played this on the 360. The campaign was great. Enjoyed this game more than 1 or 4, and would put it on par with the other two main Halo games in terms of fun.

So, here I am 1/2 way through the year and it appears I"m on pace that I can get this done. However, I have some big games in my backlog that I think will be my undoing in trying to get to 52 (am working on ESO, also will be playing Witcher 3, Dark Souls II SotFS, DA:I and have been working on and off on FFType-0)

7/21 Update:
30. Batman: Arkham Knight (PS4): 7/3/14: Time 26 hours
Rating: 4.5/5
Completed Main game, All side missions except for Riddler trophies. Activated Knightfall. Completed Batgirl DLC and Harley Quinn DLC. During the game, I enjoyed it but wasn't sold on the Batmobiile originally and felt a bit of serious fatigue. I did really like it however, just didn't have the same "feeling" of enjoyment as I did the first 3 games of the series. WIll keep and play again. I am regretting dropping $40 on the Season Pass due to the length (or lack thereof) of the Batgirl Content.

31: Flower (PS4): 7/3/14: Time 2 hours
Rating: 3/5
Enjoyed this game, got it on a Flash sale for dirt cheap. Was simple and fun to play. I did take it off my Hard Drive though as I doubt I'll every play it again.

32. Metal Gear V: Ground Zeroes (PS4)
Completed Main Mission and all Side Ops Time: 5 hours
Rating: 3.5/5
As many have stated, it's a glorified demo. But it's fun. Also has replayability. Has me hyped for The Phantom Pain esp. since it's likely the swan song for the series (at least on consoles).

33. Splatoon (WiiU)
Completed Single Player game, have reached Level 14 in MP.
Total TIme Spent to date: 14 hours
Rating: 5/5
Great game, this, SM3DW, and MK8 are my favorite WiiU games by far. So glad Nintendo came out with this new IP and enjoyed their take on the genre. Taking a break from the game until the new content arrives in August, but will pick it back up then

34. Bayonetta 2 (WiiU)
Completed Main game 7/19/15: Time 14 hours
Rating 4/5
Enjoyed this game a lot, moreso than the first Bayonetta. This genre isn't my favorite but I do enjoy it when done right (like original DMC, NG and this). Also my enjoyment is probably tempered by the fact I kinda suck at this genre. This was a great deal though when packaged with the first game (and esp since I bought it in a BOGO sale)

35. Journey (PS4)
Completed Game 7/21/15: Time 2 hours
Rating 4/5
Very fun game. The art style, the concept, everything is fantastic. A good game to multiple playthroughs and I am very glad I bought into the hype on GAF and bought it.

36. Rocket League (PS4)
Completed Season Mode 7/24/15; Played Multiple Online matches: Total Playtime 7 hours
Rating 5/5
Great game. By far the best PS+ game that I've received. I'm not very good at it, but it's just so much fun to play a few matches here and there.

37. Sleeping Dogs (XB1)
Completed Main Story 8/4/15. Time 22 hours
Rating 4/5
Good game, but unfortunately like many open-world games for me anymore, I start getting a little bored with the (at least to me) repetitiveness, esp repetitive side missions.

38. Driveclub (PS4)
Won Legends Trophy 8/6/15: Time (not for sure, maybe 15-20 hours?)
Rating 4/5
I didn't pick this up until it was ~$25 dollars on sale on PSN right before the PS+ edition came out, so I missed all the launch problems with it. Great racing game. A bit of a contrast to the other racing came I wound up completing (Forza Horizon 2). I've seen the two be compared and contrasted on these forums, and I feel both are of high quality and have their own merits.

39. Halo 4 (XB1) replay
Completed main game 8/10/15: Time 5 hours
Rating 4/5
Replayed this as the hype for Halo 5 is starting to kick in for me and wanted to complete it again before the fall onslaught of MGSV, Forza, etc. kills my playing time. I enjoyed this campaign a lot more than others here. My biggest issue story-wise is I didn't like the "who the Forerunners were" retcon from what Bungie had done.

40. Forza Horizon 2 (XB1)
Completed main game 8/17/15: Time 22 hours
Rating 5/5
Fun open-world racing game. Completed the Horizon Finale, but having so much fun with it, will continue to play the other championships and got the Storm Island DLC. Was able to build my profile up to Tier 5 to get as much as I can for when Forza 6 drops.

41. Everybody's Gone to the Rapture (PS4)
Rating 3/5
Completed main game 8/18/15: Time 3 hours
Great story. Obviously this isn't going to be a game for everyone as many won't like the "gameplay" But for me it was a nice palette-cleanser and change of pace from other games that I play.

42. Jetpac - Rare Replay (XB1)
Completed all milestones and snapshots (8/23/15): Time 2 hours
I picked up Rare Replay on a whim and when I tried this game, I was hooked. Very fun to play.

Gears of War Ultimate Edition (XB1)
Completed main story (8/30/15): TIme 8 hours
Rating 4/5
Brought back great memories. Loved Gears 1 and 2 (haven't played the others yet).
Have put in another 10 to 12 hours in MP. MP is kinda frustrating at times, esp compounded when you are not that good, but getting a gill in this MP is much more satisfying compared to most other MP games.

44. Lunar Jetman - Rare Replay (XB1)
Completed all milestones and snapshots (8/31/15): Time 1.5 hours
Rating 2/5
Not that fun of a game to be honest. I liked Jetpac much more. "Fixing" the lunar surface to drive could be frustrating

45. Cobra Triangle - Rare Replay (XB1)
Completed all milestones and snapshots (8/31/15): 2-3 hours
Rating 3/5
Fun game. Brought back classic 8-bit NES memories. Like many of the older Rare Replay games, I doubt I could have beaten this without cheats on.

46. Atic Atac - Rare REplay (XB1)
Completed all milestones and snapshots (9/2/15): 3 hours
Rating 2/5
It's an okay game. Kept getting lost (which is part of the game) otherwise you could probably complete this in about an 1 hour.

47. Forza Horizon 2: Storm Island (XB1)
Completed main game (9/11/15): 10 hours
Rating 5/5
Loved FH2 and really loved this content. I haven't been counting DLC (e.g. Valley of the Yetis or Batgirl: Arkham Knight DLC) separate from the 'main' games, but am making an exception for this as there is so much content. I enjoyed these races more than the "mainstream" FH2.

48. Madden 16 (XB1)
Rating 5/5
Won Super Bowl and Draft Champions mode (9/14/15): 16 hours+
Best Madden I've played in years. The tweaks and nuances they added to the game really help out.

49. Sabre Wulf - Rare Replay (XB1)
Rating 2/5
Completed all milestones and snapshots (9/14/15): 3 hours
Another "older" Rare Replay game I would not have completed without the cheats on. This is another game that I could have probably completed in an hour if I didn't get lost so much.

50. UnderWurlde - Rare Replay (XB1)
Rating 2/5
Completed all milestones and snapshots (9/24/15): 2.5 hours
The controls in this game were so frustrating. That was the hardest part of this game with or without the cheats. While I've given my critiques of all these Rare ZX Spectrum games, I was playing the Atari 2600 when these games came out and the Rare games are absolutely more advanced than the old Atari games. But damn, if these games aren't just out and out hard/frustrating.

51. Battletoads Arcade - Rare Replay (XB1)
Rating 3.5/5
Completed all milestones and snapshots (9/28/15): 3.5 hours
Hadn't played a old school side scrolling brawler from the 16-bit era days in years. Brought back good memories of these style of games. Had to play through a 4th time to pick up the smash attacks milestone as I was too dumb to start trying to rack these up until my 2nd playthrough.

52. The Walking Dead - Season 1 All epidoses (PS4)
Rating 2.5/5
Completed (9/28/15): ~9 hours
My first TellTale game was Wolf Among Us and I loved it. This game didn't grab me the same way that Wolf did. Either I was more interested in the lore of Wolf, or I'm a little burnt out on "Zombie" games and their stories.

Welp, That's it, 52 games down in 9 months. Had played some great games this year in that list. Bloodborne is by far the best IMO, but Far Cry 4, Ori and Arkham Knight are all excellent games also. I enjoyed most of the games I played this year, the only ones I didn't really enjoy that much and had to "push" may way through them just to say I beat them are Walking Dead and Dead Rising.

Overtime:

53. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (PS4)
Rating 5/5
Completed 10/15
Time: 100+ hours

Fantastic game. This is the first game that has equaled my enjoyment for Bloodborne. While yes, the story is "meh" and was obviously rushed at the end, the gameplay itself is still awesome. Even spent some time with MGO until the "shooter-month" (Halo, CoD, Battlefront) started.

54. Knight Lore - Rare Replay (XB1)
Rating 2.5/5
Completed 10/15
Time: 3 hours

Completed all milestones and snapshots. Falls in line with the other early Rare games. Thank goodness for cheats.

55. Until Dawn (PS4)
Rating 3.5/5
Completed 10/24/15
Time: 8-9 hours

Not a bad game/movie. Was entertaining but as soon as I 'beat' it I knew I would never play it again so was one of the few games this gen I've sold/traded back in. Only 4 of my characters survived.

56. Gunfright - Rare Replay (XB1)
Rating 2.5/5
Completed 10/15 (all snapshots and milestones)
Time: 2 hours

Was a easier game than the other early Rare Replay games. The gunfights themselves would have been challenging though without rewind for me.

57. Uncharted 1 - Nathan Drake Collection (PS4)
Rating: 4/5
Completed 10/15
Time: 8-10 hours

Still such a good game. I said before I think this gets undue "negative" word of mouth. I know, opinions and all that, but I think even after all these years it's still a good game. The remastered edition looks so good too.

58. Halo 5: Guardians (XB1)
Rating: 5/5
Completed 11/3/15
Time: 7 hours

Great game. While a bit shorter than the other Halo campaigns (though frankly not much shorter than 3; ODST or 4), it's soooo good IMO. Especially with the fact it offers a bit more variety in how you approach each level than 4 did. The only negative in the campaign IMO is the repetitive boss fights. MP is great as well. I'm not a great Halo MP player but the gameplay itself is fantastic.

59. Assassin's Creed Syndicate (PS4)
Rating 4.5/5
Completed 11/20/15
Time: ??? hours (can't find a gameclock on this one and the way I played it, having a hard time estimating)

Great game. I don't have franchise fatigue of AC like so many (only played 1 and 2 some, Black Flag and Unity before this) so that might be a difference. This is the best AC game I've played by far and one of the better games I played this year.

Game #19: Far Cry 4 - PS4
Completion: 100%
Personal Rating: ★★★★★★★★★★

Everything about Far Cry 4 is very well crafted. All the systems fit together nicely. The collectibles give an excuse to fly around the gorgeous Kyrat in a Buzzer. The story missions are all interesting and all of the characters have their own quirks and goals. The guns are abundant and handle well. Stealth is rewarded but brute force is just as fun. And there are very few games that let you ride an elephant into battle or ram a rhinoceros with a 4-wheeler.

I had a hard time putting this one down. My play sessions would drag on for many hours longer than I expected. And a few times I found myself just wandering around rather than following the waypoints to the next collectible, mission, tower or outpost. It's rare that a game can accomplish that and still have a solid slow to its content. That was Skyrim's problem, among others. You could get drawn into the world but then it felt hollow because there was so much content that was ultimately meaningless and didn't loop you back into the main story. All of the side-content in Far Cry 4 manages to do that. Whether you are working with Hurk or Yogi and Reggie or just liberating an outpost or collecting a journal entry - it all is there to give more detail and circle back to the main plot of the Golden Path versus Pagan Min.

This is probably the best game I've played all year.

Game #20: Rogue Legacy - PSVita
Completion: 3/5 bosses killed
Personal Rating: ★★★★★★★☆☆☆

I'm not usually a fan of rogue-likes, but this game clicked with me. I think it was because of the system of constantly making tiny bits of progress rather than starting completely over from scratch. Each time I died, I would get a little bit more health, a little more damage, a tiny amount of lifesteal, a sliver of armor and so on. It's really a progression RPG where you can only progress by failing and trying again.

I had some minor annoyances with little things like hit detection, immunity frames, and randomized starting characters but they're easy to get past once you really dig into the game. A solid indie platformer.

Game #21: Heroes of the Storm - PC
Completion: Level 30-something, ongoing
Personal Rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆

Heroes of the Storm is probably the most casual MOBA I've played yet. There's very little thought processes to go through when playing. You don't need to worry about building items or working any sort of high level strategy like minion denial, last hits, carries, jungling. When there is something other than pushing lanes to do on the map, the game blatantly tells you to go here and do this new objective. I'm sure the high level team play gets significantly more complex but to just play and enjoy the game, it is very simple and actually quite relaxing. I was also blown away by the ability to essentially play the game solo with bots filling out both your opponents and other team members. This is an excellent, though not preferable, way to make some progress on your personal or hero levels or try out new heroes without getting hounded or trash-talked by overzealous teammates. It's also refreshing, coming from League of Legends, to have a class structure that is slightly more rigid. There is less ambiguity on what you should be doing as any given hero. Overall, I would say that I actually prefer this to League or DOTA 2 because I am not very competitive in MOBAs but I enjoy them mechanically. This is definitely the game for that kind of player. My only real complaint is the rate of normal gold acquisition compared to the price of heroes seems weighted in such a way to highly incentivize outright buying them with money. After many, many games and dozens of hours of play, I'm barely able to afford a handful of low-cost heroes. But I suppose this is a necessary limitation compared to something like League or DOTA because there are no runes or glyphs or anything but heroes to sink your funds into and the hero list is still rather sparse since it's a new title.

Game #22: Xenonauts - PC
Completion: Primary Campaign
Personal Rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆

It's a pretty faithful recreation of the original XCOM title. There's some improvements to the basic systems and some new additions to tech and research. The difficulty is definitely still there as well. I had a lot of fun with this. Not much else to say though, it's XCOM without the name.

Game #23: Metal Slug XX - PSVita
Completion: Main Story Campaign
Personal Rating: ★★★★★★★☆☆☆

I really like the Metal Slug series, so this one was a no-brainer on PSVita. The name is kind of misleading since this is literally just Metal Slug 7 for the Nintendo DS with a new character skin and online co-op. But the base game remains the same. The campaign is pretty short and you can blast through it in an hour or so. You'll get a lot more out of the game from replays and trying to increase your score and/or save all the POWs. It was a fun way to waste an afternoon which is pretty much how all the Metal Slug games feel.

Looking through my collection, I forgot a finished the following two games a month or so ago...

Game 21: Bloodborne - 74 hours - PS4

At the start of New Game+++. Only missing 1 trophy and a bunch of stuff from the chalice dungeons. Huge From Software fan here and while I like the game, it's probably my biggest disappointment of the year still.

Game 22: Banjo-Kazooie - 10 hours - Xbox360 Arcade version - REPLAY

With the announcement of Yooka-Laylee, I started up a run of Banjo-Kazooie for the umpteenth time. Completed the game at 100% with all possible Mumbo tokens collected as well (completely unnecessary, but cool). One of my favorite games of all time still.

GAME #22: The Order | 1886 (2015)
| Rating: ★★★★ | Platform: PS4 | Developer: Ready at Dawn |

A flashy action adventure title. Graphics are top-notch and the art direction is really impressive. The action from scene to scene is really fun. I was captivated. I was entertained. The gameplay felt heavy and with a sense of urgency.

It's hard to write something positive about this game without going into defense mode. I liked it. It felt like they made a game I'd enjoy. The story was a bit shallow and the dialogue was a bit odd at times. The acting and presentation is all great though. Would love to see another one of these.

GAME #23: Thirty Flights of Loving (2012)
| Rating: ★★★ | Platform: PC | Developer: Blendo Games |

I hadn't heard about Blendo Games before but I had heard about Thirty Flights of Loving from some thread way back when it was released. It showed up on a Steam queue and I felt like jumping in. It was really fun.

The basic theory that I'm working with is that if indie games try to evoke tears they have an easier time getting in the spotlight. This game is basicly a narrative experiment. Fast cuts and non-sequential gameplay that flows flawlessly. It'd be interesting if someone made something that felt more like a whole game and less like an experiement.

GAME #24: Gravity Bone (2008)
| Rating: ★★★ | Platform: PC | Developer: Blendo Games |

Included with Thirty Flight of Loving was Gravity Bone. Why not play it? Like Thirty Flight it is an experiment in narrative design. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has done something similar to great effect. How do you kill off the player character before the story is done?

GAME #25: The Vanishing of Ethan Carter (2014)
| Rating: ★★★½ | Platform: PC | Developer: The Astronauts |

Gorgeous attention to detail. This game is basicly a painting come to life. The story however is a bit on the lacking side. It's all well told but it's not a good story. Gameplay wise it's a puzzle game with a zombie jump scare minigame thrown in and its inclusion is rather jarring. What is good works really well. The setting. How the story unfolds. The mystery. The puzzles. They all work to make a good narrative structure.

GAME #26: Broken Age (2015)
| Rating: ★★★ | Platform: PC | Developer: Double Fine |

I'm puzzled. I really liked Act 1 and felt that it showed potential. Wonderful art coming together with good writing and acting. The puzzles were creative and fun. Then something happened. Act 2 never went anywhere. It treaded the same ground twice and just threw a really odd left-turn story on top of everything else. The puzzles also went from fun to unfair. What's there is good but the disappointment from what it could have been great stings.

Game 27: RONIN - 10 hours
PC

RONIN can easily be classified as a Gunpoint clone if you watch screens. It is true to some minor extent. Jumping works like it does in Gunpoint and the graphical style isn't that far off. Where it differs is the combat. While Gunpoint is real time based and at times wants you to be a bit stealthy, RONIN is actually turn-based and wishes to see all antagonists on the screen dead. While it had a mechanic or two that were annoying and while the precision isn't always as good as Gunpoint, the puzzle nature of the encounters are really fun.

36. Driveclub (PS4)
Legend Trophy won. 194/225 stars in the Driveclub Tour.

There's a lot I could say about the game--about how it's quite pretty, about how the challenges are a neat idea that could've used more time in the oven, about how the club system is intimidating to those without a group of friends already playing Driveclub--but really the Driveclub experience for me boils down to two things: a driving model that felt very unpredictable, and AI that feels like a throwback to the worst excesses of Gran Turismo. Those two factors combined manage to wipe out most of the goodwill I had towards Driveclub, and if you asked me today what arcade racer to recommend to you, I'd tell you to pick up Forza Horizon 2 in a heartbeat.

It's odd to see people call Driveclub's driving model overly grippy. I mean, I think I understand where those people are coming from--being able to brake so late into turns is definitely unnatural--but when I think back on my Driveclub experience, I don't think of having too much grip. I think of not having enough grip at the right times, not having predictable grip, not having grip during what should be relatively calm straightaways. In short, Driveclub never felt right to me, especially in its fastest vehicles.

As for the AI, never have I had computer opponents try to ram me off the road as often as they do in Driveclub. I saw all manner of odd behavior--cars that should have been slower than me passing me on long straights, cars suddenly slowing down or speeding up substantially even though my lap times were relatively consistent, cars routinely hitting me from behind because they were wholly unwilling to pass me cleanly. All that would be bad enough on its own, but because I found it hard in the faster cars to drive consistently, having asshole AI mess with you throughout a race went from being a nuisance to a major problem.

It's too bad, because I do appreciate Driveclub's back-to-basics approach to racing. Evolution could potentially make a sequel that better represents the game I want them to make. But for now, it's hard to love Driveclub. It's just not the racing game for me.

#41 - Dead Space

h7m7nuA.png

12 hours clocked, according to Steam at least. I liked this game very much, although it doesn't really have much of "horror", since you get used to the jump scares after the first hour or so. The most terrifying thing in the game is that fast monster with erratic movements. Creepy thing... But perhaps it was the lack of horror that helped me finishing this game.

The puzzles are creative (and rather easy, which is fine by me), making use of the anti gravity mechanics and the kinesis thingy. The story is nice and I didn't see that little twist coming. I might buy Dead Space 2!

Game 28: Sid Meier's Civilization V (30 Hours)(PC) – 6/25/2015

I always loved these sorts of games growing up and with a new laptop i figured id finally delve into this game. It did not disappoint me. I found it quite deep and really enjoyed progressing through everything and advancing my civilization. Ran through a few different ones to completion and im sure ill be back to explore them some more by the end of the year, but for now it was time to take a bit of a break.

Game 29: Batman: Akrham Knight (24 Hours)(PS4) – 6/28/2015

My first Arkham game and i have to say i was impressed with how well they did making you feel like batman. From all the gadgets, highlighting a detective approach to things, to just grappling and gliding over the city. Battling all the iconic enemies in gotham was a blast and the game looked great. The story could have been stronger, and they relied way to much on the batmobile for big showdowns and missions in the later half of the story which was a tad disappointing, but overall it was a solid game.

Game 30: Splatoon (5 Hours)(Wii U) – 7/4/2015

I can see why some really enjoyed this game but for me it just never captured me. The concept was unique, and there was a good range of weapons to try out, but in the end the gameplay seemed rather repetitive and it really felt like i was playing the same maps over and over. In the end the desire to keep going with this game just wasn't there.

Game 34: STEINS;GATE
ad1hpgk.jpg

A textbook case of a slow-burner. When I started this, I wasn't really feeling it. The main character was totally unrelatable, and it was much too embroidered in anime tropes and otaku culture to suit me. When Mayuri, Faris or Lukako were speaking, or it indulged in "fanservice", I'd damn-near cringe to death. I guess it says something about the quality of the story, however, that it kept me from putting the thing down. Because it was magnificent. Half of the endings were just weak game-over screens, but any time you made it to chapter 10 it was gold. The time-travel experiments and voyage of discovery really reminded me of the movie Primer, and I really appreciated how it weaved real life stuff in there to help with the plausibility. What I didn't appreciate, though, was the moments where the player character was either violent against or contemplating sexual violence against some of the female characters. Left a sour taste in my mouth, that the sweetness of the true ending couldn't quite make me forget.

Game 10: Persona 4: Dancing All Night (JPN version) [PSV] — 31:21:33 (finished all songs on ALL NIGHT, except for one to avoid spoilers) [Finished: July 4]

sncFcYd.png

When this game was first announced in 2013, I was immediately wary of it because it seemed so absurd and, potentially, pointless. Playing it now, however, and I've come to appreciate it as a fantastic rhythm game with great music, which one would come to expect from the Persona series, and good rhythm game mechanics and a layout that just makes it so fun to play. I haven't played the story yet due to my not understanding Japanese, but I have a feeling that the whole package is a great goodbye to the Persona 4 series before Persona 5 comes out.

Game 11: Her Story [PC] — 4 hours [Finished: July 5]

GUQCnJ6.png

I'm not sure what to think about this. I impulse bought it without knowing very much about it, and I went through it all in a single sitting. The acting, which is basically at the core of the game, was good. The presentation as a whole was pretty neat. Each player will have a unique experience regarding how they saw the story, due to the way the video clips are laid out and how everyone will have their own order of having seen things. This in turn means that one's perspective concerning how the story presented in the game actually unfolded could differ from another person's. I didn't like when I would search for a word but nothing came up, and it became rather frustrating when I would keep trying to search for new clips only to get nothing. On the other hand, it felt good when I'd perform a search and found something I hadn't seen before. In the end, I guess I like how there's no "decisive" answer to the events in the game and that people are running wild with their own interpretations.

It's been a while since I posted an update on my progress so I figured another one was due.

20. Gunman Clive (Finished 6/2/15 - playtime 1 hr 10 mins)

I got this game as part of the Humble Nindie Bundle and honestly if not for the bundle I wouldn't have picked this game up (even though it's relatively cheap at $2) mainly due to it's shortness and art style, which for some reason gives me a LCD Game & Watch vibe.

21. Splatoon (Finished 6/4/15 - playtime 18 hrs 39 mins)
th

I originally wasn't planning on getting this game, but after having my PS3 MK X pre-order paid of since the beginning of April and slowly getting pissed about WB Games, High Voltage, & NetherRealm's radio silence for the last gen versions (which is currently about the only way I would've been able to play MK X) I decided to cancel my pre-order. What made me choose Splatoon as the "replacement" game was all the hype I was hearing for this game...plus not being able to pre-order Fatal Frame 5 since it wasn't available for pre-order yet. All in all Splatoon isn't a bad game, it just feels a little light on content compared to the previous Nintendo titles I've bought in the past couple of years. As for the game's online multiplayer, well, it needs a lot more modes (would have loved to see local split screen multiplayer & the ability to do it solo by adding AI controlled bots or using/selecting an online player's ghost data to play/practice against), weapons, and more maps, also the rank matches kinda pissed me off, and I didn't care for the fact that the decision of who the winning team is just felt completely random at times.

22. OlliOlli (Finished 6/9/15 - playtime 7 hrs 34 mins)
header.jpg

I got this game as part of the Humble Nindie Bundle and and honestly if it wasn't for that I probably wouldn't have gotten this fairly decent (and challenging once you go for all 5 stars for all the Amateur and Pro stages) 2D skateboarding game.

23. The Evil Within DLC: The Executioner (Finished 6/20/15 - est playtime 2 hrs 30 mins)
th

Finally got around to playing the last piece of DLC for The Evil Within and I gotta say it was kinda nice, like a breath of fresh air. In "The Executioner" you play (in first person perspective) as the "Boxman" enemy (the one with the giant safe for a head) and you are given a mission based story centered around defeating rooms of enemies in order to rescue your daughter from being corrupted by the STEM system.

24. Super Meat Boy (Finished 6/22/15 - est playtime 13 hrs)
images

In the past couple of years I've started to become a big fan of challenging 2D platformers so I decided to finally tackle Super Meat Boy, which I had heard was the toughest 2D platformer out there. Well after beating the game and getting the "normal" ending I gotta say it didn't disappoint and I plan on definitely revisiting this game in order to get the "real" ending as well attempt to 100% complete it (at the moment I sit at 51% completion)

25. Batman: Arkham Knight (Finished 7/1/15 - Playtime 38 hrs 15 mins)
468px-Logo2.jpg

I recently bought a Xbox One (the Backwards Compatibility announcement at E3 was the big thing as that feature was what was making me resist getting either Xbox One or PS4) and got this game for free as part of Microsoft's (and various retailer's) post E3 deals. I chose this game over something like Dragon Age: Inquisition, Mortal Kombat X, or Assassin's Creed Unity because I am a big fan of the Arkham games and have essentially 100% completed all 4 of the previous games in the series(Asylum, City, Origins, & Origins: Blackgate) and this game will be no different. While it did a few things I didn't like (like the forced Batmobile segments & pretty much imo botching the
Red Hood story arc
) it was still a pretty good Batman game overall (imo better than both Origins games, but not as good Arkham City which is to date my favorite one in the series) as well as (imo) the darkest one to date.

26. Killer Instinct (Finished 7/4/15 - est playtime 10+hrs)
images

I decided to pick up this game (the Season 1 Combo Breaker physical release) earlier this week mainly because I had never played a Killer Instinct game before and had heard that this latest game in the series was pretty good. So I figured it was time to check it out and all in all I gotta agree this is a pretty solid (and at times occasionally frustrating) fighting game that kept giving ma a bit of a Street Fighter vibe (some of the characters have similar quarter circle style move sets and the game is very combo heavy) the more I played it.
