Halo: Reach Beta Thread

Question for Urk (or anyone else that can answer):

Are we getting any more armor permutations added during the beta, or is what's in the armory now the entire beta selection? Just wondering if I should hold out for better stuff later in the beta or just upgrade my spartan now.

With all the complaints, I think most people can agree they are at least having fun.

Anyone else dislike the flag melee being ohko? I had a game of stockpile with people camping with flags and melee'ing instead of capturing :lol .

Last night, right before bed, I was playing 1 flag on Powerhouse (as it always seems to be), and I melee'd an opponent carrying a hammer. That was incredibly satisfying. :lol

Also got a chance to play Covy Slayer. Brilliant mode.

To be honest, Covy Slayer is the most fun I've had in the game so far.
Yeah, Covy Slayer is where it's at.

Still loving it. Wish I could keep up with everyone's rapidly improving skill level though, I think I'm getting old. But after a few days the hidden 1-50 trueskill thingie will probably do its work and start putting me in fair games with people of my skill level.

I can't believe people saying the graphics are shitty. Thats rediculous. It looks great.
Jaggies are ridiculous for an important game like this. I can see the very improved beauty beneath them but most people can't and it's understandable. Problem should have been a top priority fix after Halo 3, bungie deserve the hate for the visuals.

I agree with most of the people here when it comes to sound. A few of the weapons just don't sound all that powerful.

I'm look at you pistol and assault rifle.

Stockpile might be different, but I'm pretty sure there's no increase in CTF. This is just based off of feel, though. I've heard of someone figuring out a way to juggle with Sprint, Whether they're trying to get the speed boost to last long enough to throw the flag, or are using it to negate the lengthened slowdown after throwing it, I'm not sure.

Am I the only person who thinks most of the normal weapons (NR/DMR/AR) need a power boost? It feels like at medium to long range I have almost no chance to kill a player if they know what they're doing.

Don't know if it's been brought up, but does anyone find it difficult to choose a loadout and spawning point in 3 seconds?

Speaking of choosing a spawning point, does it ever really work? I think it only worked one time for me; all of the other times I choose a location and spawn nowhere near that person.

I did too. Just got back from multiple negative k\d's. Perhaps it is because I am playing with randoms and getting teamed against parties.

I have no trouble killing with the NR from afar, the AR is not meant to kill from afar, and I suck at the DMR currently, so I couldn't give an opinion on that one.

If flag carriers get 1 hit kills, guess what, STAY AWAY!!!

Argh I hate that flag hits are one hit kills. MLG had it perfect. Ugh there are so many issues still in place that weren't fixed from Halo 3.

Alright. I don't like Sword Base. At all. The hallways are too narrow, making the already very powerful grenades even more deadly, and I just don't like the layout and the way it plays. I feel like I should be able to visit each floor of each side without having to cross to the other side.
My first game of CTF on Sword Base, there was no indicator where we were supposed to take our flag to. I wandered around aimlessly with the flag trying to find our "base" to no avail. Finally, a teammate who was escorting me betrayed me and took the flag because he was impatient.

A) Don't use effing party chat with your bros if you have teammates you need to communicate with.

B) After the game, the douchebag admitted he had no idea where to take the flag either. Thanks for killing me, then, dude.

Has anyone managed to score 5-hit kills with the DMR on a consistent basis? I can with the magnum, but the DMR always seems to need a different number of shots. Sometimes its 5, sometimes its 6, sometimes its 7...and I cant really figure out any rhyme or reason for it, cause I am timing my shots with the reticule bloom.

So.. what exactly do you get the Technician commendation for? I'm assuming a couple of kills without taking damage - am I close?

There's definitely an indicator.

Underneath one of the sets of stairs, don't ask me to specify though. :p

So now that im playing it at a reasonable time im LOVING this game. My only question is whether theyre going to add the ability to view party details Halo 3 style. I always wonder when I see Gaffers online if theyre in partys with Gaffers or friends. Obviously I dont wanna jump in unless its other Gaffers.

Hell yeah, its maybe just enough time to choose a loadout, navigiating the menu's takes longer than the spawn does. :lol

So, while I was taking my hard drive to a friend's house so we can play the beta on his amazing LED TV (which makes the game look SOO good), I accidentally dropped my HDD. I didn't think anything of it at the time. When we got to his house and set everything up, I turned the Xbox on, and I got an E68 Error. I remembered that it's a Hard Drive error and its one of the least common errors. So now I'm HDD-less, which means I'm also Beta-less.

Guess I'm going out to get a new HDD. :(

Well, I think it's tough to choose a loadout in general, which is a testament to how amazingly balanced they all are. On Swordbase, I tend to hover over jetpack and armor lock and can't choose. But then sometimes I want sprint. And then I think about how awesome it would be to stealth kill someone. The same thing on the other map. It's just so well balanced. Unlike a lot of other games, there isn't one go-to loadout for me. There is a legitimate place for them all.

Everyone's shield should be cut in half, that would work for me. The amount of bullets it takes to kill someone in Reach has almost gotten comical. It is part of what takes the excitement and fun right out of the game completely for me.

I can't imagine that thought process happening in three seconds. Do you think that it would be a stretch to not allow people to spawn until after 3 seconds, but then they have to choose their loadout and spawnpoint before they spawn? I know a lot of people wont like that because it would disrupt the rythm of things, but at least people could think about their loadouts more.

Party Chat better be disabled in the arena..

Centerish area of the top floor on red side, I believe. Sword is in the mid height center on blue side which leaves the Plasma Launcher suspended on that walkway in the middle. I like that symmetry.

Party chat gives your team a disadvantage. Sure, if you don't mind it, it's fine, but I'd rather you not bring your team down with you unless you're just that awesome.

I actually got the hang of the armor abilities pretty quickly.

I actually played with two Bungie dudes yesterday, dirty drew and Heuvo(Spelling?).

I wonder if we will get a BWU today, the Comm Chatter hasn't been updated normally the past two days.

You should be able to choose the next loadout you spawn with from the pause menu or scoreboard. That way, team spawning is all you need to worry about while actually respawning, and you don't get that massively frustrating situation where you wanted to pick Jetpack a while ago but then you died and didn't remember until you respawned and now you're still stuck with Armor Lock dammit

Should not have lumped the AR in there. My bad. Kind of sleepy.

Most players right now don't really know what they are doing it seems. If you're aware of your health I don't think it's that hard to go hide and recharge your shield before the enemy has a chance to kill you.

When fighting good players I shoot them with the hope that my teammates can finish the job, not that I can actually kill them myself.

Something about Covy slayer just makes me play like total shit. I don't know if it's the weapons (the repeater doesn't feel as good as the AR), or what... but I don't like it

Yeah, definitely need some more time to think about what you want to do.

The amount of damage I've seen players take from the AR, plus a melee on top of that and not die seems a little overboard this time around. I don't know if it's the shield, or the AR sucking but man.

Bungie, I'll say it again. Please have Dpad control teammate spawn and Control Stick Loadout choice. Right now, it's Dpad and Control Stick just for for Loadouts, and then Dpad only for teammate spawn. That's just stupid and takes too much time.

I'm at a point where I use Armor Lock on Powerhouse and Jetpack on Sword Base, nearly all the time. I love using the jetpack but i'm always destroyed if I use it on Powerhouse, so Armor Lock it is (which is just as awesome, by the way. There's a certain flow to using it that I think i'm starting to get the hang of. I have far more killing sprees when using Armor Lock)

Sounds reaonable. It worked for Call of Duty to just sit somewhere for 2 seconds and pick your next weapon; it might work the same to pick a different loadout.

Even still, there are times where I pick a different loadout that's not sprint, and when I die I get Sprint. I should just stick with what I chose until I change my mind.

I'm posting from my phone at work but seriously it sounds like most of you complaining about a lot of things don't understand what you're complaining about. This map is too complicated to navigate...take 5 minutes to learn the layout and you'll find all sorts of neat shortcuts and nice flag running paths. This weapon sucks? Because you don't know how to use it or because it doesn't act like a certain weapon from Halo 3? Seriously give it a chance. Its new stuff. This isn't a title update for Halo 3 this is a new game. The stuff in the game needs to be compared to other stuff in Reach, not what things were like in Halo 3. Reach brings back the feeling that Halo: CE gave me. That every time I spawn I have a chance to kill the other guy. The battles aren't pre-determined by what weapon we are both using. It feels more skill based, and the man who uses his weapons and abilities better goes on the fight another day.

It's not that Sword Base is 'too complicated', it's that it sucks to play in. It has terrible choke points, no flow, no easily identifiable areas, it looks terrible and you're forced to use a specific ability (jetpack) if you want to have a chance. The DMR and pistol suck not because you have to learn how to use them but because they provide zero feedback to the player and the blooming reticule is a worse mechanic than bullet spread. The idea behind spread or reticule bloom is to prevent one weapon from dominating across all gametypes. It doesn't work this way. Instead it creates an element of randomness and uncertainty that cheapens the satisfaction of getting a kill. It stops being a pure 1v1 battle and instead turns into a coin toss to see whether your reticule was .047 milliseconds smaller than the other guy.

The beauty of Halo's gameplay is that you start with similar weapons (BRs) and build strategies to get power weapons. It's as close to chess as you can get in a videogame. The mental battle you face when trying to decide when to push, grab rockets or OS, etc adds to the reward of becoming better and better at the game. I can see why people who don't play or suck at Halo like Reach because they can spam grenades and pick up the shiny purple gun and get kills. To me it feels like all the nuance is gone.

Armor Lock is awesome to use when it comes to defending or returning flags. The meeter still goes down when you use armor lock, so you can just run up to a stolen flag and lock yourself there when trouble comes and viola! Flag returned.

I feel like some of you just wanted Halo 3.5, which is basically what 3 felt like to me coming from 2. After about 20K games of those games, I was ready for the next step or evolution of the series, this is it. :)

I'm not completely sold on everything, I think the blooming reticule won't be a problem once I get more used to it. I also don't understand why the Plasma Launcher was even invented, it's worse than the Laser. :(

I also have a totally sweet Assassination clip I'm about to upload.

I want to be playing this right now. Damn school.

I've only got 33 games played, and only a 1.2 kdr. But I feel like I was really getting an handle on the Nerfle. And Sword Base is great once you have the layout down.

I still need to get a team of gaffers going to play. Going in solo I was doing great, but playing with 7 other gaffers resulted in a bad victory record. Because I kept being on the opposite team from Tashi. :p

This is clearly halo 3.5 at best...it's just some people wanted halo 3.1.

I agree full with all of this, I dont think I would mind if the Bloom was more visible but with the Pistol the bloom is crazy and almost invisible! The lack of audio/ visual/ feeling feedback is a big problem, I find myself using the Needle Rifle only because I can tell when im landing shots, the DMR and pistol dont give me this feedback. They should play a small ping sound, Halo CE style when you land shots.

I do think Bloom removes an element of skill, all they have done is effectivly added a delay between shots, the low pistol clip size and the DMR having pretty crappy accuracy means that those weapons just arent as fun as they should be.

Correct.

Also, where is the Sniper Rifle on Sword Base? And I agree about the motion blur. Shit gave me a headache and was making my eyes water (or that could of just been tears of joy from what I was playing).
