Though I actually read about three times faster than I can listen.

I tried getting into that, but they seem to drag forever. That, and the ones I tried it for had pretty eh narrator voice. Felt robotic, like emotionless droning on. Couldn't get into it. I can see a strong correlation between the first and second sentences, so from that... any suggestions, DD? I can take a hack at it during my atrocious commutes.

How much do you like Star Wars? Cause if you are reading SW novels instead of listening to them, you've taken the biggest of L's. Outside of that, I've been working my way through the Dresden Files audiobooks, which is narrated by James Marsters (aka Spike from Buffy) and he does a killer job. Also, Graphic Audio is like the best thing I've discovered in my life
in 2016
. They take books and go 100% full cast, music, sound effects and everything else. It's actually closer to a play than a book; once I'm through Dresden, I plan on checking out the Stormlight Archive via GA.

But for you *specifically*? It's time you loved her like the rest of us do.

Damn, too late for first page. Oh well. This will be my first time doing it, I shouldn't have a problem with the movie part, but hopefully this will motivate me to do 50 books as well.

Geist- - 4/50 books | 7/50 movies

Books:
1.The Bone Doll's Twin by Lynn Flewelling
2. Hidden Warrior by Lynn Flewelling
3.The Oracle's Queen by Lynn Flewelling
4. The Thousand Names by Django Wexler

Movies:
1. Arrival (2016)
2.Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016)
3.The Talk Race in America (2017)
4. Logan (2017)
5. John Wick 2 (2017)
6. Moana (2016)
7. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)

Sadly, going to take a pass on it this year... my movies and reading has been down all 2016. No point in even attempting it again.

Anyone have any good recommendations for a cheap tablet to use as an e-reader? I want it to be able to support comics as well, so if there's e-readers on the market that do, I'm willing to take that route.

I looked at a Kindle Fire, but I'm in Canada, and the price disparity between amazon.ca and amazon.com is ridiculous ($50 USD vs $170 CAD), and amazon.com won't ship them to Canada.

Budget around $100 CAD, but I'm somewhat flexible if the product is right.

Edit: Found a tablet I can live with. Thanks to those who offered advice

That price difference is ridiculous lol. I don't have any suggestions as I haven't followed tablets in forever, and the one I was going to suggest (the Fire) is a no-go.

What about the paperwhite? It had only been $20 more for the past few weeks ($99 USD) and is easily the best reading device on the market.

Indeed. I'd have grabbed it in a heartbeat otherwise.

I'll look into it, thanks

Illness is the doctor to whom we pay most heed; to kindness, to knowledge, we make promise only; pain we obey.
I've already accepted that this will be my worst year regarding movies. Two reasons. First, I've watched so many movies these last years participating in this "contest" that there are too few I really want to see. Secondly, and more importantly, with my new born baby girl I don't reckon I'll have the time to sit down and watch movies like I have in the past. Books will remain largely unaffected for most part of the year since I mostly read during my daily commute.

Movies I can do easily. Too many video games for me to dedicate time for 50 books. We'll see!

Don't count audiobooks or whatever. Make someone actually sit down and read!

Haha, this comes up every year. I have a few thoughts on it that kind of lead me in different directions. First, I don't think listening to audiobooks is a terrible thing or should be discounted as somehow not real, even if it is less challenging than reading normally. Second, I think people should take this challenge as a challenge, an opportunity to stretch themselves, rather than to tally up to fifty and then pat themselves on the back. (Although for some folks, it might be that listening to a bunch of audiobooks is a chance to stretch.) Third, I think this kind of group effort works better if people are supportive rather than pulling each other down. Encouraging people to push themselves harder is great, but there are good ways to do that and not-so-good ways.

I guess in summary I sort of agree with you and sort of don't. People should do what they're comfortable with. Or rather, what they're slightly uncomfortable with. And work from there.

Lets try this. Books might become and issue but I've already got my list of movies ready.

Can i join even if i dont get round to books?, i reckon i can do at least 15 new films in the cinema alone in 2017 which would be a record for me. Let alone at home, mplus Halloween i aim for 15-20 new (30 whilst having a full time job is a slog)

If i can read one book in full this year i will be pleased with myself, as i start one and rarely finish it.

Yeah, you can join. The first year I did the challenge, I only read one book. I think in the 2016 challenge, there is a poster that hasn't read a single book.

First time.

First time trying something like this, I imagine I'll do decently on movies and poorly on books but not reach 50 in either. I spend too much of my leisure time gaming or watching TV.

My estimate before starting will be 40 movies and 5 books. It'll be interesting to see how well I do by the end of 2017.

I've got a bunch of books to read but I doubt I'll get anywhere close to 50 movies.

RedFyn - 8/50 Books | 18/50 Movies

Books

1. Storm Front - Jim Butcher
2. Fool Moon - Jim Butcher
3. Grave Peril - Jim Butcher
4. Summer Knight - Jim Butcher
5. Death Masks - Jim Butcher
6. Blood Rites - Jim Butcher
7. Dead Beat - Jim Butcher
8. Coraline - Neil Gaiman

Extras/Reread:
• The Outcasts - John Flanagan

Movies

1. Hell is for Heroes
2. Jack Reacher 2 - much better than I remember the first one being
3. Tarzan (2016)
4. Universal Soldier
5. War Paint (1953)
6. Hamburger Hill - I enjoyed it, at least as much as one can enjoy something like this.
7. American Ninja
8. Eraser
9. Stalag 17 - this one surprised me. I quite enjoyed it and would recommend checking it out
10. Moana - BEAUTIFUL, AMAZING VISUALS, I didn't realise it was a musical going in and didn't like the first song in the village. The vocals were great but the songs less so. My brother said he wrote Hamilton (or maybe just composed the music for it I don't remember) and perhaps that's why I wasn't a big fan of them. I'm not one for that stuff.
11. Central Intelligence
12. The House that Screamed - What did I just watch? No seriously it's so dark it's hard to see.
13. R.O.T.O.R - legitimately terrible and not even it's so bad it's good. I only stuck through it so that I could add it to the list and say how bad it is.
14. American Ninja 2 - Better than the first
15. American Ninja 3 - Slow and dull. Much worse than the others. That ending though. Angelic light covers him as he uses Ninja magic to go super saiyan and eradicate the poison from his body.
16. Murphy's War
17. Pink Cadillac
18. Hannie Caulder

Extras/Movies I've seen before:

• Xmen First Class - enjoyable movie but I prefer the style of the original trilogy
• Guardians of the Galaxy - still not a fan
• Star Trek Beyond - I'll miss you Chekov
• US Marshalls - This ones a classic for me
