2. Glittermitten Grove (PC, 2016) - 2:09 (+3:56 in 2016)
Reached year... well, it's a really high number, anyway.

I'm kind of into Dwarf Fortress-style games where you tell a bunch of minions how to build a settlement, and I'm kind of into weird city builder things, so it makes sense that I'd be into Glittermitten Grove. You oversee a group of fairies trying to build a home for themselves in the trees, and there's a bunch of neat stuff that give the game its own unique flavour. First, you're not just claiming a whole bunch of land and building stuff on it; you have to grow your building spots by planting and raising trees. There's a light tree balancing mechanic where you have to make sure you don't build too much on one side of a tree, or judging whether a certain branch fork can support a building or not. Second, you have to manage shade and sunlight to make sure you can collect certain resources like food (plants need sunlight!) and magic power.

Beyond all that, there's a subterranean component, where you can dig beneath the earth in search of certain types of resources. This is the part that reminds me the most of Dwarf Fortress--not so much the intricate simulation or the storytelling potential, but rather the temptation to keep digging, even though you know the further you dig, the more dangerous things can get, until one day you dig too far and unleash hell. Except I don't know if hell exists in this game. Maybe it'll be patched in later.

1. Bloodborne
★★★★★ - 25h 36m - 1/1/2017
A more focused Souls experience, every aspect of which testifies to a singular artistic vision. Ever-engaging combat, extraordinary art direction and fascinating lore. I wish the quality of bosses were higher, however. Overall, I rank it below DS3, above DS1.

2. Bloodborne: The Old Hunters
★★★★★ - 4h 44m - 1/1/2017
Orphan of Kos might be my favorite boss encounter in the entire series. The rest of the DLC bosses, aside from one exception, were also great.

3. New Super Mario Bros.
★★☆☆☆ - 8h 29m - 1/6/2017
I suppose it would've felt fresher had I played it when it first came out. But having already played NSMBW and NSMBU, there was barely anything interesting to be found here in the original.

4. New Super Mario Bros. 2
★★★★☆ - 5h 24m - 1/7/2017
Really enjoyable, surprisingly. The Super Leaf made the game a joy to play. It's visually pleasing as well thanks to its vibrant colors and the 3D effect. The coin collectathon gimmick is whatever, though.

5. New Super Luigi U
★★☆☆☆ - 3h 55m - 1/8/2017
I never fully adjusted to Luigi's floatier, more slippery physics, and I'm not a fan of the stricter time limits and shorter levels. Didn't enjoy the game.

6. Super Mario Land
★★★☆☆ - 0h 41m - 1/9/2017
Probably the worst controls and physics of any Mario game, but it's still worth playing to see how much it oddly deviates from the rest of the series.

7. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
★★★☆☆ - 1h 44m - 1/9/2017
Tight, enjoyable package with some neat ideas that you won't find in any other Mario game, such as the Bunny power-up and low-gravity space levels. In many ways it feels like a Game Boy counterpart to Super Mario World.

8. Super Mario Bros.
★★★☆☆ - 0h 57m - 1/9/2017
Still a solid platformer despite its stiff physics. I appreciate how the level design gradually introduces new enemies and obstacles, ramping up its difficulty curve at a fair pace. Unlike...

9. Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (NES)
★☆☆☆☆ - 2h 07m - 1/11/2017
Stiff physics combined with frustrating level design made this one of the worst gaming experiences I've ever had - much worse than I had remembered. It's hard to believe Nintendo designed this game considering the amount of trial and error and other BS involved here. I can certainly see why it didn't get a U.S. release until much later with several tweaks to make it more tolerable.

10. Super Mario Bros. 2
★★★★☆ - 2h 22m - 1/12/2017
A far better sequel to the original SMB than Lost Levels was. Love how quirky it is, even if its quirkiness is a result of it being initially developed as a non-Mario game. Fun new pick-up and throw mechanics and boss fights that utilize them well. If you don't use Peach, you're doing it wrong.

11. Super Mario Bros. 3
★★★★★ - 3h 38m - 1/12/2017
Even better than I had remembered. The physics and controls feel just right, and there's so much variety and creativity packed into the game that it's hard to complain about its relatively short levels. Excellent from start to finish.

12. Super Mario Galaxy
★★★★★ - 12h 52m - 1/21/2017
It takes something truly transcendent to amaze me just as much upon replay as it did the first time I played it. I love absolutely everything about SMG. Probably my favorite game of all time.

13. Dishonored 2
★★★★★ - 2h 45m - 1/23/2017
Completed a permadeath run - my fifth playthrough of this stealth action masterpiece. Might be one of my top 10 favorite games.

14. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D
★★★★★ - 20h 36m - 1/26/2017
Not quite as immaculate as I used to think it was, but I still love it. I was just a bit surprised to feel a slight sense of tedium all throughout the game, even with all the improvements in the 3DS version.

15. Bayonetta 2
★★★★★ - 3h 28m - 1/27/2017
Completed a casual fifth playthrough, having already completed the game 100% back in 2014. Still incredible.

16. Super Mario Galaxy 2
★★★★★ - 20h 01m - 1/31/2017
I used to consider them fairly equal, but having replayed both SMG and SMG2 this year I firmly hold the first game in higher regard. The level design of SMG2 is still the best of any game I've played, but I miss the grander presentation of the first game and I think SMG2's green stars water down the overall experience somewhat - more content isn't always necessarily better. That said, SMG2 is incredible and still one of my top 10 favorite games.

17. Super Mario 3D Land
★★★★☆ - 4h 05m - 2/2/2017
The unique ways it plays around with perspective will keep SM3DL fresh among the Mario series for a long time. Great game to replay.

18. Super Mario 3D World
★★★★★ - 8h 02m - 2/4/2017
Replayed every level including Champion's Road. Fantastic game, even if I'm not in love with the wider level design and 2.5D perspective.

19. Diablo III: Reaper of Souls
★★★★☆ - 40h 27m - 2/8/2017
Played some Season 9 and reached 553 Paragon with my Demon Hunter. Easy game for me to return to now and then, as I've now played 500+ hours over the past few years.

20. FTL: Faster Than Light
★★★★★ - 1h 46m - 2/18/2017
Managed to complete another run on my first attempt. One of my favorites.

21. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided - A Criminal Past
★★★★☆ - 5h 02m - 3/9/2017
Not the brightest ending for Deus Ex (if Square is really putting it on the backburner for a while), but hey, it's more Deus Ex and that's always a good thing.

22. Dark Souls III - The Ringed City
★★★★☆ - 6h 32m - 4/20/2017
Solid final boss fight, but otherwise I think it'll be mostly forgettable. Enjoyed both DLC expansions but neither managed to recapture the high points of the base game for me.

23. Super Mario Maker
★★★★★ - 340h 11m - 4/24/2017
Poured over 300 more hours into SMM, creating a couple levels and bringing my total levels played to over 1000. Also watched countless hours of SMM streams on Twitch. Easily my favorite game of the generation and firmly in my top 5 of all time. If I could play only one game for the rest of my life, I'd probably choose this.

24. NieR: Automata
★★★★☆ - 34h 45m - 4/26/2017
Fun, fluid combat (though somewhat shallow) and a cool sci-fi aesthetic. I don't love all of its design choices, but the game deserves praise for its attempts to capitalize on the unique strengths of the medium to tell a layered story.

25. Horizon: Zero Dawn
★★★☆☆ - 20h 30m - 5/3/2017
The gameplay never fully clicked with me, sadly. Fortunately, I found the world and story interesting enough to see it through to the end. Awesome enemy design and striking environments.

26. What Remains of Edith Finch
★★★★☆ - 2h 04m - 5/4/2017
Features some novel uses of gameplay to convey narrative over the course of several emotionally stirring vignettes, one of which is the most profound depiction of mental illness I've experienced in any medium. Everyone should play this game.

27. Prey
★★★★★ - 27h 48m - 5/10/2017
Immersive, tense, cerebral. It may not be the revelation the System Shock series was, but it gets so much of the core experience right that it would've been worthy of the name. Loved the exploration and environmental storytelling.

28. Emily is Away Too
★★★★☆ - 2h 13m - 5/31/2017
More engrossing and nostalgic than the first. Cleverly weaves your conversations with multiple characters to create compelling drama and breaks the fourth wall in delightful ways. Unfortunately, my experience was soured when the game punished me at the end for a choice I didn't make.

29. Persona 5
★★★★☆ - 116h 19m - 7/1/2017
As a follow-up to Persona 4, one of my favorite games ever, Persona 5 is somewhat disappointing: far less likable cast, excessive writing, questionable localization, plodding pacing, and uneven dungeon design. Despite those issues, I enjoyed the game overall. Its stylish-as-hell presentation and meaningful gameplay improvements are undeniable, and I respect how much the game coheres mechanically and thematically. And the plot (when it actually progressed) could be moving and exciting. I just wish its characters had stolen my heart the way P4's did.

30. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
★★★★☆ - 160h 15m - 8/10/2017
I don't love everything about Breath of the Wild, but the masterful design of its topography and the absolute freedom to explore it all made this a special experience for me. The sheer scale of Hyrule combined with details like sightlines to far distant landmarks constantly impressed me to a degree no other game world has. The hours just melted away as I became lost in adventure, day after day. At 160 hours played, it's by far the most time I've spent with a single player story campaign, and I never wanted it to end. I do wish more of the things I ended up finding were as amazing as the journey to find them, but nevertheless I think my time with BotW will go down as one of the most memorable gaming experiences I've ever had.

31. Tacoma
★★★☆☆ - 2h 00m - 8/11/2017
Telling its story through audiovisual logs made for a more detached narrative experience than I would've liked. The story itself is decent and ends on a relatively high note, but at no point did the game affect me emotionally in any of the ways Fullbright's previous work, Gone Home, did masterfully.

32. Immortal Planet
★★★☆☆ - 2h 35m - 8/12/2017
Nearly every gameplay mechanic and design decision is ripped straight from the Soulsborne series, but translated solidly into a 2D isometric perspective. Enjoyed it.

33. Sonic Mania
★★★★☆ - 8h 00m - 8/16/2017
An atomic bomb of nostalgia and a joyous reminder that there was indeed something special about those classic Genesis platformers. Turns out Sonic's chaotic mix of speed and traditional platforming can still bring a smile to my face. In my opinion, the formula has never been better - Sonic Mania is the best game in the series to date.

34. Sonic the Hedgehog
★★★☆☆ - 1h 31m - 8/18/2017
Alright, maybe Sonic 1 isn't that special. It's annoying and frustrating at times, even. But I still really enjoy Green Hill Zone and Star Light Zone.

35. Sonic the Hedgehog 2
★★★★☆ - 1h 47m - 8/19/2017
My favorite of the classic Sonic games. Still holds up to my memory for the most part. Chemical Plant Zone and Casino Night Zone are my two favorite zones in the series.

36. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles
★★★☆☆ - 3h 58m - 8/19/2017
Never enjoyed it as much as Sonic 2, and I still don't. Something about its more gimmick-driven design makes certain parts a chore to play through. Hydrocity Zone Act 2, though...

37. Sonic CD
★★★☆☆ - 1h 18m - 8/19/2017
First time I've played and beaten Sonic CD. The greater emphasis on exploration doesn't do much for me. I respect the time travel concept more than I care to wring all the level variations out of it, though I probably would've spent countless hours with it as a kid.

38. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
★★★☆☆ - 5h 05m - 8/26/2017
The series' stale formula is at least more tightly paced here, and it's capped off with an exciting set piece sequence at the end that rivals anything else in the series.

39. Kirby's Epic Yarn
★★★★★ - 3h 25m - 9/3/2017
First time I've re-beaten it since release. Remains one of my favorite platformers ever.

40. Subsurface Circular
★★☆☆☆ - 2h 14 - 9/4/2017
Cool aesthetic, shoddy writing.

41. Tokyo Dark
★★★★☆ - 3h 50m - 9/8/2017
A horror mystery adventure game that I found gripping from start to finish. Consistently unsettling and at times intense.

1. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light (X360)
~6 hours
Good game in coop, I had started it out this way years ago. Decided to finish it up solo today, and that it was reasonably short. I did a couple of the challenges and tombs, before deciding it was not worth the effort. The main game is fairly straightforward otherwise. Didn't like some enemies like the dry bones skeletons that kept respawning. Some elements of coop would have made some sections easier.

2. Orcs Must Die! (PC)
I also own multiple versions of this game. Easier to aim with a mouse. Finished the campaign on the base difficulty. Many of the traps were fun to use in combos like the sticky tar + swinging mace traps. Did not enjoy levels were you had to cover a large amount of ground as traversal is not the easiest and the 3rd person camera makes it hard to see.

2 down so far!

1. infamous Second Son - January 2nd - ★★★☆☆
SYrsyNR.png

Well, that was fast. The last time I had played it was on February 2016, I didn't know I was so close to finishing the story.

I had heard it was a mediocre game, but I think it's good. Probably the polarizing aspect is the main character, I liked him but I understand some people may not. I want to see what Sucker Punch is working on.

2. ABZÛ - January 3rd - ★★☆☆☆
0PKYkdE.png

I played on release date (August 2nd, 2016) and didn't touch it again until today. This challenge is a good way of fighting the backlog.

I didn't like it much. I found the controls to be a bit frustrating, but apart from that is a generally good game, it's just not want I find entertaining.

3. Journey - January 3rd - ★★★★☆
1ukaSrQ.png

I didn't play it when it released on PS3. I wasn't big on indie games and I didn't buy digital games.

It was pretty good, I understand how at the time it was considered to be amazing. Although it's really insignificant, I loved going through the last sections with a companion

I managed to finish 63 last year so I'm feeling good about getting through a large portion of my backlog this year.

xfS3Jzs.jpg

1: Superhot VR
Superhot VR wins the award for game that has most destroyed my legs. I went through the whole game in one go and all the crouching down and standing back up had my legs killing me for the next few days. Still, even with all of that pain I was completely blown away by how incredible the Oculus Touch controllers were and how much damn fun Superhot VR is. There is nothing quite like being able to shoot, throw, and stab your way through a bunch of glowing red guys while dodging out of the way of bullets. More than once I ended up lying on my back shooting at a guy standing over me. Absolutely fantastic.

tFLeJ9C.jpg

2: Titanfall 2
Titanfall 2 is exactly what I wanted Titanfall 1 to be. I'm always disappointed to hear about cool looking scifi games being multiplayer only, because I am always down for more scifi stories in games. Titanfall 2 manages to deliver in a big way with its campaign by building a mashup of puzzle platforming, acrobatic combat, some fun mech sections, and a number of novel mechanics that never overstay their welcome and always keep the campaign feeling fresh.

Sv0LI5K.jpg

3: Space Pirate Trainer
A really solid arcady shooter in VR. Works very well with the touch controllers.

Rk86ENA.jpg

4: Thumper
I've played this exclusively in VR and it is a hell of a ride. When I saw previews of it I was a bit concerned that it would be too simplistic but things move fast enough and they introduce enough mechanics to keep things interesting. The visuals are pretty crazy too.

Wkxl7Yf.jpg

5: Quadrilateral Cowboy
This game has got a lot of style and I absolutely love that it is built around a simplistic form of coding. My biggest complaint is that it spends a lot of time introducing you to new mechanics but doesn't give you all that many opportunities to actually use them after their initial missions.

W8D5Er3.jpg

6: Axiom Verge
This was very much a game I regret having missed in 2015. It is one of the only games I've played since Nintendo stopped making 2D Metroid games that has scratched the same itch that Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion scratched.

2FkozXs.jpg

7: Stardew Valley
I always underestimate the kind of pull that games like this will have on me. I should have known better considering I put 100 hours into Animal Crossing: New Leaf a few years ago. Stardew Valley is wonderfully charming and manages to iterate on the formula enough that it is a joy to play.

9749lT7.jpg

8: Watch Dogs 2
I would have never guessed after playing Watch Dogs 1 that the thing I would be praising its sequel for would be story and characters but here we are. Ubisoft managed to solve the biggest issue that the first game had and they managed to do it in a way that is pretty fantastic. I love the cast, the gameplay isn't fantastic but the interactions between the crew keep me coming back again and again.

tmCaJRf.jpg

9: Dark Souls III
I bounced off this game hard after the first three hours. Some of those early areas are pretty rough in terms of design both mechanically and visually. I was starting to think that it was entirely missing the spark of previous souls games but Dark Souls III ended up really surprising me. Some of the later levels are actually pretty well put together, though not on the level of Bloodborne, and some of them are absolutely stunning to look at. Even the boss design has been steadily improving as I've continued. The Pontiff fight is one of my favorites in the series so far.

2FtDFOS.jpg

10. Hitman: Blood Money
After loving the most recent Hitman game I decided to try out a few of the previous entries in the series. Blood Money can feel a little awkward to play but it was got some top notch level design especially in the Heaven/Hell Club level.

First year that I'm gonna try this out. First up are clean up from previous year.

Edit: So much for clean up. The first half of this year has been insane. An embarrassment of riches.

1. INSIDE - 5 hours
All the talk about the atmosphere this game presents is spot on. It is one of those games that makes you push forward to see the next weird/disturbing thing in this facility. And man, that ending was crazy.

2. Yakuza 0 - 100 hours
This wasn't my first Yakuza game, but it was my reintroduction to the series after having missed the entire PS3 entries, and boy, what an entry this was. It just has the right mixture of serious gangster storyline with goofy Japanese shenanigans to really make this a memorable one. I spent so many hours looking for all the side quests and just playing mini games. I can't wait for Kiwami and eventually I'll run through the full series.

3. Final Fantasy XIV ARR story - Seemingly years
Took me forever, but being being behind now 2 expansions got me back into this. I forgot how pretty and actually interesting I found this game to be. The fanboy in me loves that I can see the tropes I've come to love in a game like this where, let's be honest, part of the appeal is showing off how cool you look. Taking my time leveling a few different jobs before continuing on with the story. Honestly this could probably be all I need to play for most of the year if I wanted to neglect everything else.

4. The House in Fata Morgana - 55 hours (idle time)
This one has pretty much turned into a cult classic at this point on Gaf and other spots. If you've even got an shred of interest in Visual Novels, and even if you don't, you should play this game. It's very unique in both narrative and tone. It goes to some dark places, so know that going in.

5. Nier: Automata - 45 hours
Speaking of games that bring up emotions and make you think after the fact, Nier was a treat. As someone who played the first game, I was pretty psyched to see some of the references to the first game in this one despite the change in setting. I'm gonna leave it at getting all the endings is a must for the full experience. Just trust me on this. There's even an unlockable chapter select to make it way better than the previous game's.

6. Persona 5 - 133 hours
I love RPGs guys, but it usually takes me a bit by bit for me to make my way through them. That was so not the case with this one. I absolutely consumed this one and never really got tired of the game loop that made others a fatigued. It has that "just one more" day thing to it that makes it addicting. I wouldn't say it's gonna beat 3 or 4 in my favorites list; the story and characters in those two games for whatever reason hit me while P5 is good, but not amazing. But really that's like saying this really great thing isn't as good as this other exceptional thing. It's all good stuff regardless.

7. Bastion - 12 hours
I've had this game in my backlog forever and probably own it on everything but mobile. I've finally finished this after Pyre came out because I wouldn't want to move onto Supergiant's newest game before this one. Anyway, it turns out this was completely worth going back to. It still holds up both artistically and design-wise. Seriously, I'm looking forward to their recent games based on the art and music alone. I debated doing a NG+ but after looking it up, it doesn't seem worth it.

8. Last Window: The Secret of Cape West - roughly 15-20 hours
Years after playing through and loving Hotel Dusk, I make my way into my DS backlog and finish off this gem that many people probably didn't play. It's a shame that Cing is no more because there are still loose plot threads that weren't addressed in this one that I would have liked to have seen tied up. However, what is here is great. The unique book view and the art style complete with those animations. It suffers from some adventure "how the hell was I supposed to figure that out" puzzles towards the end.

9. Castlevania - roughly 5 hours
I'm gonna cop to abusing the save states in the 3DS emulator to get through this one and I'm not sorry in the least because this game is a motherfucker. Lots of cussing from me getting through this one. I can appreciate the games that came before me, but I'm happy there are modern design to games that makes things like shitty flea men and madusa head that constantly spawn to fuck your shit up a thing of the past. I'm glad I finally played this one just as a fan of later games, but I'm never going to play it ever again judging from my experience. That said, I'm still going to try to run through the the Classic era of these games, so off to more cussing in Castlevania 3.

10. Transistor - 8 hours
So far, Bastion still remains my favorite but this entry is pretty cool in that they definitely went with something different. It's almost got some of the Souls lore thing of having it tied to equipment (or processes in this case). I ended up souring on the combat by the end because I felt like I was essentially helpless if I wasn't in Turn mode and actively using the dash or invisibility to avoid the dumb invisible dogs or spiky hair things that throw homing explosives. It felt like I was supposed to use certain abilities to deal with them, which kinda bummed me out for a combat system that seemed like they put effort into making customizable with upgrades and passives. That aside, its just as beautiful as Bastion was and overall I thought it was a good experience.

Since this is my first time doing the challenge, I have a question. Do Mobile Games count, i.e. Super Mario Run?

1. Bioshock 2

Was just cleaning this one up, needed to complete the game on hard to get the platinum and I did so.

2. Destiny: Rise of Iron

Completed the questline in about 3 and a half hours. Still to do the strikes. The most time consuming thing about this was just getting my gear levelled so I could begin the expansion.

3. Wolfenstein: The New Order

A game I wanted to replay for a while, as good as I remember.

4. Resident Evil 7

Fantastic horror game. They took what was good about the original game and injected some good first person action into it. Will complete this one twice so I get the other ending.

5. Gravity Rush 2

So much fun, an interesting story too. The free DLC is decent also.

6. Witcher 3

A great RPG that I enjoyed playing through for only the second time. It was good to do all the dlc in one sitting.

7. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

I played through the Criminal Past dlc. I feel it is quite sad this might be the last part of the series in a while. Not a great story here but the gameplay is excellent.

8. Horizon: Zero Dawn

GOTY year so far. What a fantastic story, game and setting. Cannot wait for more.

9. Disc Jam

Best new PS plus game in a while. Not quite the new Rocket League.

10. Mass Effect: Andromeda

Despite the gifs and janky dialogue there is a decent game in there. They need to do better with further games in the series.

Ok as long as i dont loose anything on this then why not join anyway :) it maybe force me to complete stuff.

In progress:

1. Uncharted 4
2. The Last of Us (i may quit on this one)
3. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (PC)
4. Unreal 1

My first game is done :D

#1 Unreal II: The Awakening
8/10 - 6 hours
can recommend but it is a bit slow :)

There's no way I'm getting it this year with a kid on the way.

1. Sherlock Holmes: The Devils Daughter - PS4 - Jan 2nd ~10 hours ★★★☆☆
A real step down from the previous game, younger Holmes with less interesting voice, some really terrible 3rd person action sections, including a Wiggins shoe shining minigame (wtf). The 4.5 cases you get to play are ok and good in some areas but the overall story arc is a horrible mess with very very bad voice acting.

#1 Wolfenstein: The New Order ★★★★ Jan 3rd - 10 hours
What a great game to start the year, great narrative and characters, fun dual wielding weapons and a decent length. Played on the 2nd hardest difficulty and didn't have too much trouble so one day I'd like to play it on the hardest mode

I made it last year and I'm in for this year as well. I've certainly got the backlog ready to support this kind of a challenge!

1) Catherine - 10 hours - 1/12
Grabbed this for $3 when it was on sale because I remember watching my friend play through it years ago. It was pretty good and I enjoyed the story, but some of the puzzle sections were a little tedious.

2) Gravity Rush Remastered - 10 hours - 1/16
Wow, I was looking forward to playing this game but I enjoyed it even more than I thought I would. The characters (especially Kat) were great, the world was a lot of fun, and the gameplay / missions were fantastic! I am so excited to play through the second one now!

3) Monument Valley - 3 hours - 1/21
This had been sitting unfinished on my tablet for many months because I typically don't play mobile games. I had some free time today on a trip and decided to blast through it and it was pretty fun. There are some mind bending puzzles and it's absolutely gorgeous, but the initial experience left a little bit to be desired. However, I then moved on to the bonus sections of the Forgotten Shores and Ida's Dream and they were utterly fantastic. The puzzles were much more fun and interesting and I had a blast with them.

4) Need for Speed (2015) - 17 hours - 1/27
I started playing this game from EA Access a few months ago but I recently felt like diving into another driving game so I jumped back in. At first I wasn't having much fun because the steering and general control felt heavy and unresponsive in the starting car. Once I built up some money though, I was able to upgrade it and then just buy a GTR that I upgraded and used for the duration of the game. I ended up having my blast during my time with the game this week and I even liked the story and live action cut scenes because, while they were goofy and over the top, the characters were generally likable and it added some depth besides the normal, 'go here and do this race or drift'. The different types of events were fun and I enjoyed changing my car's setup for each. I've got to give a special shout out to the drifting in this game which feels sublime when you pull it off well.

5) The Last of Us: Left Behind - 3 hours - 1/29
I beat The Last of Us last year but decided to not go through this DLC right away so that I had some new content for later. It was just as good as I was hoping and while I knew
that part of it took place before the main game and involved her relationship with her friend and told the story of how she was immune, I had no clue there was some that took place between fall and winter when she's taking care of Joel.
A great piece of DLC that makes me even more excited for the second game to come out.

6) The Division - 31 hours - 2/5
I got this game with several of my friends shortly after launch last year and while I really enjoyed it, we ended up dropping it as a group. I've come back to it a few times since, especially after some of the major updates. I had always planned to come finish it at some point and this was the perfect time because I was able to grind up a bunch of levels on my own with many of the side missions that we had left undone before joining with one of my friends and my roommate to blast through the rest of the story. The plot itself is whatever but the world and atmosphere are top notch. It's one of the prettiest games I've played and it never got old to come out of a building and find yourself in a blinding blizzard. There were some frustrations along the way, mainly because there are so many systems at play with this game and I couldn't be bothered to really learn the intricacies of it all, but I had a great time and will be going back to finish up some of the last missions.

7) Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare - 10 hours - 2/7
I may dislike the multiplayer of IW quite a bit, but the campaign was pretty awesome and they really shook up the traditional formula for the better. The game does a great job of making you feel like the captain of a spaceship because you walk to and from your jackal fighter, interact with the crew, and use a star map to choose your next mission (including side missions which were a pleasant addition). There were some really good characters that I was fond of through the campaign which made the final chapter resonate much more than the typical CoD experience. Overall I loved the new structure of the single player experience and I hope Sledgehammer builds on it for their next entry.

8) Fire Emblem Heroes - 10 hours - 2/10
Just beat the main story of Heroes which I've been playing since it came out last week. It's a fun game and I'll give it the fact that it got me into Fire Emblem which means I'll be playing the copy of Awakening that came with my 3DS that I had never touched before. The story is really thin and things get grindy really quick trying to get orbs to get some new characters. I like the squad I built but the fact that orbs are so hard to come by means that players not willing to spend any money will have to wait quite a while in between summons which kind of sucks because if you don't have new characters you like and are incentivized to level up, there's not much to keep you coming back for the time being.

9) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered - 8 hours - 2/19
This game was even better than I remembered it being on 360 which is impressive considering it's one of my favorite campaigns of all time. Raven has done an amazing job remastering this game and it looks and plays excellent. Sometimes I'm disappointed when I revisit old games because they either haven't aged well or it doesn't hold up to modern gameplay, but CoD4 once again surpassed all expectations.

10) Far Cry Primal - 15 hours - 2/26
I love the Far Cry games but I was a little hesitant about this one since it took my favorite aspect (all the satisfying guns) and replaced it with bows, spears, and clubs. It took a little while for it to all click for me, but once I started running around like a madman with my two-handed club, knocking rival tribes out with one swing while my sabertooth tiger mauled people, I realized how much fun it was. From riding mammoths to hunting some of the bigger game, Far Cry Primal ended up being a ton of fun.

11) Wolfenstein: The Old Blood - 5 hours - 2/28
I was really in the mood for a FPS after I finished Primal so I decided to play Old Blood which has been in my backlog since I got it and New Order last year. I had forgotten just how good the gunplay in these games are but it is so satisfying to blow through hordes of Nazis and zombies. Some of the stealth sections are a little rigid and end up breaking down into gunfights when someone sees you from 30 feet away but that was fine for the most part. The story definitely wasn't as good as NO, but it was fun nonetheless.

12) Frog Fractions - 1 hour - 3/10
I saw the documentary about this game on NoClip so before I watched I went ahead and played through it. Definitely don't want to spoil anything but I think it's safe to say this game is bonkers and made me laugh out loud several times. Well worth checking out and go in as blind as possible.

13) Deadpool - 7 hours - 3/17
I've been playing a ton of Horizon Zero Dawn, but I needed something kind of mindless to play while I watched the NCAA tournament games so I decided to finish playing Deadpool. The combat was nothing special and got repetitive towards the end but the writing was good and I laughed out loud at quite a few of the bits. There were also some very fun diversions, like 2D side scrolling sections, and these were always a welcome change of pace.

14) Horizon Zero Dawn - 55 hours - 4/6
I've been almost exclusively playing this for the past month and I can say without a doubt that it's my favorite game ever. The world is the best I've ever seen in a game, alive and rich with detail. The enemies are unique, challenging, and generally awe inspiring. Aloy is easily my favorite hero in ages, the gameplay and game systems are so polished and rewarding, and the story is a fantastic sci-fi tale. Everything about this game spoke to me and I tried to make it last as long as I possibly could by doing absolutely everything so that by the time I had finished the final mission and watched the credits roll, I had gotten the platinum. I've been thinking about this game so much in the past few weeks, much more than when I usually play games, and I just know this is going to leave me feeling empty for a while since it's finished now. I'm so excited that Guerrilla is working on DLC for this and hopefully it will be just the beginning of a fantastic franchise.

15) Ryse: Son of Rome - 5 hours - 4/8
After beating Horizon, I wanted to play something much smaller in scope before I jumped into another huge, open world game and since we got Ryse for free with Gold this month, I thought it would be perfect. I really enjoyed the story and some of the supernatural intrigue,
especially how the game was a chess match between gods meddling in people's affairs.
Although this was a launch title for the Xbox One, it is still absolutely stunning, only matched by a select few games on consoles. The combat was a ton of fun and although it wasn't exactly deep, I never got tired of it and it was more complex than the QTE's that I thought it was primarily made up of before I started playing. Some of the locals you visit were absolutely gorgeous and overall it was a great experience.

16) Snipperclips - 4 hours - 4/15
I bought this when my friend came to visit for the week and we had an absolute blast with it. There's quite a few different puzzle variants and some of them require some thought to plan out an execute. It's not very long but it's well worth the price.

17) The Unfinished Swan - 2 hours - 4/18
I'm not really sure how I feel about this game. It's definitely beautiful to look at and it really does feel like moving through a storybook, however, some of the gameplay was a little flat and the story didn't really grab me.

18) Batman: The Telltale Series - 9 hours - 4/20
I really enjoyed this series, especially since it had a lot of twists on some of the traditional Batman characters.
I loved the major role that Catwoman played since she's my favorite character in the DC universe, the fact that Vicky Vale was the major villain was fantastic and unexpected, and most of all, the fact that Bruce's parents were actually gangsters that preyed upon anyone who opposed them lead to a lot of interesting developments. I actually had some really tough decisions that I wish I had made different looking back, but that speaks to how the choices in the game are interesting and it makes you care about what is happening.

19) Forza Horizon 3: Blizzard Mountain - 8 hours - 4/28
This expansion was an absolute blast and it was so much fun to jump back into Horizon 3. Can't wait for the Hot Wheels expansion.

20) Abzu - 2 hours - 5/3
This was a stunningly beautiful game to explore and I'm very glad I played through it, although I wish the story had been a little less nebulous.

21) Halo 3: ODST - 6 hours - 5/13
I've been slowly replaying through the entire Halo franchise through the Master Chief Collection over the past few years and I finally made it up to ODST. This is probably the entry I've spent the least time with since I've only played it through when it first came out, but I enjoyed the change of pace by playing as the ODST squad and didn't even mind not feeling like a super solider all the time. Also, the structure of the story where you walk around New Mombasa finding clues about what happened to your squad before flashing back to see what they did after getting separated was a lot of fun. The only issue I had was that it kind of just ended without a lot of fanfare and it felt abrupt.

22) Gears of War 2 - 10 hours - 5/21
After playing through ODST, I felt like jumping into another 360 shooter and playing Gears 2. I enjoyed it a lot more than the original and they did a great job mixing up some of the locales and not letting you get bored. At some point I'll play through 3 and Judgement as well before getting 4.

23) Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition - 6 hours - 6/4
I bought Injustice 2 because of the rave reviews and how much story content is supposed to be in it so I decided I needed to play through the original first. The story was pretty good although the cutscenes left a lot to be desired which isn't surprising considering this game was developed for last gen consoles. The actual battle system was really well done although I didn't even scratch the surface over the course of my short playthrough. Very excited to play the second now.

24) Alien: Isolation - 22 hours - 6/6
This game was such a long and intense experience, especially the last hour and a half which were non-stop and pulse pounding. As good as this game was, and as much as it absolutely nails the aesthetic and dread of the original movie, there were parts of it that were maddeningly frustrating, almost without reason. There was one part where you have to avoid a bunch of androids that I had to start over 10 times, and each time meant several minutes of just getting back to where I was because the save point was so far away. I get that making the save points physical locations that you have to reach builds the tension, and really makes you nervous when it's been a while since you've gotten one, however, making you re-watch entire scripted sequences over and over because there was no save point after them was a drag. Overall this is a really good game that is worth playing through despite its faults.

25) Overwatch - 75 hours - 6/25
The reason my progress in other games has slowed to a crawl is pretty much due to Overwatch. I bought it during the anniversary event and I've been completely hooked on it. I'm almost level 60 and have a good deal of experience across quickplay, competitive, and arcade. I love how it's a completely different game based on which hero you pick and my favorites are Tracer, Sombra, Mercy, D.va, and Ana. I'll continue to play this for quite a while but I figured I'd go ahead and mark it as complete since I've done so much in it.

26) Guacamelee - 6 hours - 7/5
I was in the mood for a Metroidvania style game over the past couple of days so I started Guacamelee which I've had forever. It was an absolute blast and I loved the combat, style, music, and story of the game. It was such a pleasure to play through and I'm glad I finally got around to it.

27) Crash Bandicoot - 7 hours - 7/10
I never even played the Crash games back on PS1 but I was really excited about the N. Sane Trilogy and playing through the game for the first time this way was a treat. There was definitely some jank with the platforming and hitboxes in some parts, but overall it was a very challenging and fun experience. I'm excited to jump into the sequels because it sounds like they have some more variety and a smoother difficulty curve because there were some levels on this one that I got multiple game over screens for due to reasons that felt frustrating. Still overall a very fun game.

28) Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy - 12 hours - 7/12
Playing Crash Bandicoot got me itching to go back and finish my playthrough of Jak and Daxter from the HD collection on PS3. I was like 80% through the game which I started several years ago but I never finished it until now. Glad I did and now I can move on to Jak II and Jak 3 which I did play back on the PS2 and I'm excited to revisit.

29) Forza Horizon 3: Hot Wheels - 8 hours - 7/22
This has to be one of the most fun racing experiences I've ever had. It's an absolute joy to go tearing around the Hot Wheels tracks with all the crazy loops and psychics defying stunts.

30) Spec Ops: The Line - 7 hours - 7/24
I've been wanting to play this for a while based on the positive reception it gets around here so when it went on sale a few weeks ago I picked it up. It was definitely an interesting take on the military shooter and I appreciated how it confronted the player with the consequences of your actions.

31) Doom - 8 hours - 8/15
What an adrenaline rush this game was. Start to finish it was fast paced, brutal, and an absolute blast to play. There were some sections that were frustration, but the core gameplay was rock solid and there were times that I was laughing because of how much fun it was to jump around with a shotgun killing demons.

32) Sunset Overdrive Season pass - 4 hours - 8/20
I played Sunset Overdrive last year and it was one of my favorite games of the generation so I've been looking forward to getting the season pass to give me a reason to jump back in. It was on sale this week so I grabbed it and blasted my way through and it was a ton of fun. The movement system and style of the game is fantastic and I was laughing so hard at some of the DLC.

33) Arms - 10 hours - 9/1
I'm going to go ahead and count this game as beaten since I've finished the Grand Prix with all characters including Max Brass and have played various other modes. It's definitely a fun game, but it feels very bare bones with no story mode and nothing to do besides straight up fights and some mini games.

34) Destiny 2 - 14 hours - 9/19
Although I've completed the story, I'm far from finished with this game. I've certainly got to give it to Bungie, they vastly improved the storytelling, world building, and activities in the sequel. Playing it so far has been a ton of fun and I'm beginning the process now of raising my power level so I can complete some of the more high level end game content.

35) Uncharted - The Lost Legacy - 7 hours - 10/2
This picked right up where Uncharted 4 left off quality wise for me. I absolutely loved my playthrough and the ending set piece was one of the best of the series. Also loved getting more Chloe since I really hated her absence in 4.

36) Mirror's Edge - 4 hours - 10/8
Every year I replay this game since it's one of my favorites of all time and pretty short. Even though it has some issues, it's always a fantastic experience.

37) Assassin's Creed III: The Tyranny of King Washington - 6 hours - 10/8
I had heard good things about this DLC shortly after the game came out, but I never got around to playing it until very recently when it went on sale. I had a decent time with it, but it was definitely hard returning to III, not just because it was my least favorite of the AC series, but because there have been so many positive gameplay changes since it came out and it definitely was showing some age.

38) Data Wing - 2 hours - 10/10
This is a fun little mobile game about piloting a piece of data through a phone. It had an excellent story and the gameplay was fantastic.

39) Assassin's Creed Syndicate Season Pass -
6 hours - 10/16

I was waiting to play this until I finished the AC III dlc and have been really looking forward to the Jack the Ripper story especially. Overall the season pass was a lot of fun even though the missions definitely lacked some of the polish of the main game. I was surprised that I enjoyed The Last Majaraja missions even more than the Ripper ones. These have definitely gotten me excited for Origins.

This sounds like a great idea, and with winter putting the kabash on things, a way to finally take a stab at my current backlog.

Count me in.

Currently playing (will update):

Finished my first games of the year and finally decided on a design for my posts. Hope people like it!

Super Mario Land - Game Boy - Completed Jan 1
This was the first game I ever owned. I was sure I finished it as a child but it seems I never beat this one before! I clearly remember the first few levels but I have no recollection of the later levels and had no idea at all there were shmup levels in this! Very fun to revisit. My little brother sat beside me while I played, we both hummed the tunes and he called it nostalgic. Funny, because he must have been like 4-5 back when I played this last. Anyways, it's a fun game but extremely simple.

rain - PlayStation 3 - Beaten Jan 1
I think some friend recommended me this when it released and said it would be for me. I see why my friend would think that but ultimately this wasn't a big hit. I loved the idea - the protagonist and the enemies are all invisible but you can see the water hitting their bodies making them visible in the rain - but I think the "story" was extremely annoying and it was way too easy. I also despise it when games make you
"beat" the big bad over and over just for it to keep coming back
. But now I'm making it sound worse than it is. It's a fine little game and I don't regret playing it. I just didn't want to replay for completion.

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins - Game Boy - Completed Jan 2
I remember this game blowing my mind as a child because I played it right after the first one. The differences between them almost makes them feel like they are not part of the same series. This one I know I played at least up to the last level because I remember all of the worlds clearly, but I think I never beat it. I was very impatient with games back then because I could only have one and had to trade it in to try something else. I also remember being very creeped out by the Mario Zone map. I liked this more than I thought I would (I am known as the girl that doesn't like Mario games among my friends) and I am happy I played it again.

Final Fantasy II - iOS - Completed Jan 2
I've always heard bad things about this game. I actually don't think I've ever heard someone say that it's worth playing! I dunno if that's just people around me or if that's the general consensus. In any case, that's sad! I found it to be very enjoyable. I've played it on and off since the summer when I beat the first game and I think I like this more. The first was perhaps too "simple" and "traditional" for me, especially in comparison. The only FF games I had finished before playing these two were the PS1 entries, so it's real nice to go back and see how it started. Gonna play III on PSP next!

Last year I beat a little over 30 games. Let's see how 2017 goes!

1. Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty (PC) around 20:00
It took a long time before I beat the direct sequel to my favorite game of all time. Of course I already had a lot of hours in multiplayer matches and things like TD but the campaign was also really worth it. SC2 is perhaps now my new game of all time!

2. Mega Man 5 (NES) around 2:5 hours I think
I had never played this Mega Man game before but I ended up liking it more than MM1 and MM4. It has some neat ideas and generally pretty cool bosses.

3. Pokemon Moon (3DS) 32:00
The new best gen IMO, the game is so well polished and pacing is great.

4. Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts (SNES)
This game is a lot easier and at the same time a lot more fun than Ghosts 'n Goblins, I really liked the weapon/armor upgrade system and the variety in level design. I suspect I will replay this title multiple times.

5. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Wii U) 7:16
My.. what a gem of a game. The stages are so varied and creative and there's a lot of them.

6. The Last Guardian (PS4) < 15:00
If the first 70% of the game had better pacing and moments, and the technical issues were less pronounced than I would've retroactively called TLG my GOTY 2016, It has myriad issues but in terms of narrative it does things exceptionally well.

7. Professor Layton and the Last Specter (DS) - 10:30
I love to play these games from time to time but The Last Specter didn't grab me as much as the original trilogy did, it was less fantastical than usual and some puzzles started to become stale.

8. Day of the Tentacle Remastered (PC) - 4:00
A remaster of my favorite Lucas Arts classic (besides maybe Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis), I got it via a Humble Bundle and the voices overs from the creators made this Nth replay all worth it. It was sort of watching a documentairy about the development of the game.

9. Dragon Age 2 (360) 26:40
It's not a popular opinion but I think DA2 is better than Origins, the story is more layered and focused on politics which is something I personally enjoy.

10. Sailor Moon R (SNES) 00:40
It's an average brawler but still good fun in co-op. What's kind of funny is the voice acting when charging attacks.

11. Gravity Rush Remastered (PS4) 10:00
Charming little game, it takes a while before it really gets going but in the end I quite enjoyed it.

12. Shin Megami Tensei IV (3DS) 61:55
SMTIV is a spectacular game. My favorite in the SMT series and one of my favorite RPGs of all time. Great atmosphere, pacing and art style.

13. Waku Waku 7 (Neo Geo / Switch)
It took a while to get into Waku Waku 7 but by the time I was good enough to defeat Fernandeath (played on level-3 btw) I really adored this little quirky fighting game.

14. The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (Switch) 75:00
This is probably the best game I've played since Starcraft Brood War, can't say enough good things about this game.

15. Secret of Mana (SNES) around 25:00
The idea of this game is fantastic but the execution has so many problems, the main problem is the combat system which seems to embody classic RPG statistics hidden under a simplified action-oriented scheme but is constantly undermined by a lack of feedback. It wouldn't even be in my top 50 RPG anymore.

16. Fire Emblem Fates Conquest (3DS) 29:55
Of all the Fire Emblem games released in the west I think Conquest is now my favorite entry in the series. I understand why people don't like the story or character support conversations but IMO gameplay trumps all and overall Conquest had the best maps and classes in the series.

17. Neo Turf Masters (Neo Geo / Switch)
I'm not exactly sure that I would consider being placed in the top 10 in all four of the regions constitutes having finished Neo Turf Masters but to me personally it felt that way. I hadn't played it before but it was almost immediately clear to me why this one's considered a classic. It plays so fast and smooth and streamlined some of the more complex mechanics down to just one bar that it's also become my favorite golf game.

18. Phoenix Wright Dual Destinies (3DS) 27:58
I love this series and (apart from the fact that it's probably the easiest game in the series) I love this entry. I think they nailed the art style in 3D, the animations are just so well done and the characters look very close to their 2D counterparts. The last case wasn't as strong as it was looking to be but it still tied everything together really nicely. It's not my favorite in the series but at least it's up there.

20/52 (52 is way too many! My goal is, uh, 20)

1. Clustertruck - Completed

2. Dying Light - Completed
Completed main story and all side quests in 29 hours.

3. The Following - Completed
Completed main story and all side quests in 20 hours.

4. Corpse of Discovery - Completed

5. The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings - Completed
Completed Iorveth playthrough.

6. Black Mesa - Completed
Completed up to entering Xen, which has not been added to the game yet. Every time I fire up Half Life for a bit of nostalgia, I have to play through the whole thing again over the next week. Don't know why I like this game so much. Still think it's better than most other single player shooter campaigns.

7. The Witness - Completed

8. Highlands - Completed

9. The Fall - Completed

10. Titanfall 2 - Completed

11. Planetarian: The Reverie of a Little Planet - Completed

12. There Came an Echo - Completed

13. Orwell: Keeping an Eye on You - Completed

14. Prey - Completed

15. Sang-Froid - Tales of Werewolves - Completed

16. JumpJet Rex - Completed

17. Star Wars Battlefront II - Completed

18. Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut - Completed

19. Crookz - The Big Heist - Completed

20. A Hat in Time - Completed, 100%

Game 1: Kid Icarus: Uprising (3DS) - 8 Hrs 35 Mins (12/31/2016)

#Replayed this all the way through again with my old file. Definitely loved revisiting this game as it still holds up as one of my favorite 3DS games. Good characters with great interactions with each other. I had to get used to the controls again since it had been a long time since I played it, but I definitely got used to it during the first chapters. Kinda sped through some chapters as well and skipped most, if not all the cut scenes in the game.

Game 2: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice (3DS) - 25 Hrs 21 Mins (12/31/2016)

#I'd say this is definitely up there with the Ace Attorney games that I've played. The one case I didn't really care for was the 4th one. The third one was my favorite. The ending case was solid and felt like a nice conclusion to the game as far as wrapping up the game as a whole. Definitely a game I'm glad I played and on my Top 10 of 2016 games as well.

Game 3: Gurumin 3D: A Monstrous Adventure (3DS) - 16 Hrs 50 Mins (1/3/2016)

#Pretty fun, relaxing action-RPG I finished. Soundtrack and presentation was good when there wasn't audio issues. Not much else to say, other than it being a cute, little game to relax to.

Game 1: Batman: Arkham Origins (PS3 replay) - n/a

I did a replay starting christmas because I was out of new games and this just happens to have the perfect holiday setting. Compared to other Arkham games, this really has the best story and boss fights. The open world is redundant though and some of its sidequests fall into the trap of typical open world tedium. However, there still are some very strong sidemissions, unlike Arkham Knight. The actual stages are diverse and fun too, but during my replay I've noticed that towards the end the puzzles are quite lacking compared to Rocksteady.

Game 2: Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (PS4) - 4 hours

I've already played quite a bit of the main game too and this easily is one of the best approaches to open world I've seen so far. This doesn't erase some of my annoyance with the genre though, like exhaustingly long retries of your sneaking after failure.

Parasite_Eve_Coverart.png

Game 3: Parasite Eve (PS1) - 10 hours

Another christmas-themed game. Well, I wasn't too shocked when I saw that this title was directed by the same person as Chrono Trigger. The battle system is basically a mixture of CT's active time system and light bullet hell. Despite the game's slow beginning, there's a lot of fun found in battles, which can get pretty exhilerating. PE's horror setting isn't too spooky nowadays and the prerendered visuals aren't as strong as other games of that time, yet its horror setting alone makes this RPG still fresh today. This game also has quite a nice buddy cop theme going on with likeable characters, even in spite of a not-so-mindblowing story. Plus, the soundtrack is still strong. There actually are tense moments though, particularly since battles can be just challenging enough. On a few occassions it's a little annoying to find your way, but on the other hand it's a delightfully short RPG.

4. Day of the Tentacle Remastered - January 4th - No score
O8FA6sZ.png

I won't give it a score because I played with a guide and it's not the way meant to be played.

I don't like old school adventure games, I can't stand having to spend hours trying to decipher a puzzle, playing through this (and Grim Fandango) made me get tired just by thinking how impossible it would be for me to solve some of the puzzles.

I do enjoy going through these games with a guide and I like the dev's commentary (although I remember the commentary on Grim Fandango being better).

I think some people complained about the remastered graphics being too smooth and clean, but as a first time player I loved them, it looks like a modern game.

My thoughts on The Witness. I forgot to write it down in the pic but I came to the end at 25 hours I think I completed 430+ puzzles?

Played Kotor 2, about as complete as it's going to get.

GGCSJ84.jpg

A dark side consular into sith lord completely neglecting anything but Wis/Char and Con for implants may be the most broken build I've ever played in an rpg.
Was able to completely chain CC all 3 end bosses with them barely being able to get a single hit off for the whole fight, not to mention 2-3 shooting most of the jedi masters.

Still, just how brilliant the writing in this game is more than makes up for it. Might replay the first Kotor later, but finishing Pokemon Sun and a ~40 hour progressed CK2 campaign up next.

This is my main post!

#1 スライムもりもりドラゴンクエスト３大海賊としっぽ団 - Completed 01/08/17

3rd entry in the Slime Mori Mori series, and the sequel to the DS title Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime. I picked this up in Dec. 2015 and played through about half of it, decided now would be a good time to finish her off. It's a great game, and in my opinion the best in the series. Shame that the series is probably dead at this point... I'd love a 4th on the Switch, but without a 2nd screen it just wouldn't be the same.

#2 NieR - Completed 1/12/17
#3 Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze - Completed 1/17/17

I probably would've completed NieR last year, but my copy of the game ended up having issues so I had to order a new one. Kinda salty that GameStop had sold me a broken game, but it worked out in the end... probably going to go back and plat the game before Automata hits, I really enjoyed it.

Donkey Kong was good, but I definitely think it has some issues with "Trial and Error" platforming, which is especially annoying for a game with a lives system, even if it's pretty trivial. The soundtrack was ace, however... that goes for both NieR and DK, great soundtracks.

#4 The Talos Principle - Completed 1/22/17

I picked this up during the last steam sale, and after NieR and Donkey Kong I really wanted a more relaxed puzzle game. I really liked it, though I'd definitely say that the game really does start to drag near the end. Still got my money's worth!

#5 Muramasa: Rebirth - Completed 1/29/17
#6 Gravity Rush 2 - Completed 2/5/17

Muramasa: Rebirth dragged on just a little bit in the second story I played, and I decided not to opt for collecting all the demon blades quite yet. It was a great game, with a beautiful aesthetic, but nearing the end I felt the need to move on to my next game.

Gravity Rush 2 was better than the first one, but it did have some problems. The various rift planes in Gravity Rush 2 just weren't as interesting as the ones in the first game I felt, and the story goes completely off the rails near the end, introducing a bunch of characters for the sake of a big epic conclusion. That being said, again, I loved it and it was definitely one of the more interesting gaming experiences I've had, for a variety of reasons.

#7 Nioh - Completed 2/22/17
#8 NieR: Automata - Completed 3/2/17
#9 Super Bomberman R - Completed 3/10/17
#10 The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Completed 3/11/17
#11 Ori & the Blind Forest - Completed 3/28/17
#12 Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight - Completed 3/28/17
#13 Catherine - Completed 3/30/17

Nioh - Fantastic game, plenty of content, great combat and (mostly) great level design, but suffers from both re-used areas and enemies. I still really enjoyed it, and it was a pleasure to platinum trophy it.

NieR: Automata - It's already been said many times over, but this game is a work of art. I knew I was going to love it after I pushed myself through NieR earlier (I even imported Automata to play it a few weeks early, as shown by my completion date!), but yeah. Not much to say that hasn't been said. Great combat, FANTASTIC soundtrack, fantastic story (Ending E!), etc.

Super Bomberman R - It's Bomberman. Props to Konami for, as of the time of this post, continuing to support the game with updates and upcoming free DLC. It makes the pricetag easier to justify.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - much like NieR: Automata, not much to say. If you want to hear my thoughts you can read my review.

Ori & the Blind Forest - A little shorter than I expected, but at least the quality was kept up throughout the entire game. Literally the best looking game I've ever played, the artstyle is something else - it feels like I'm playing a painting. Great gameplay too, bash is fun.

Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight - I didn't have any expectations going in, I literally only bought it for my Xbox since I had $10 left over after buying Subnautica for my friend whom I gameshare with. I had remembered seeing the trailer and it looked nice, so for the price I took a gamble. Nice, clean spritework and animation a great soundtrack, and some great gameplay makes it a really nice Castlevania styled game. It's a testament to how much I liked it that I was able to devour it so quickly even after a Metroidvania romp with Ori.

Catherine - My ex-gf being named Katherine (and even looking like this game's Katherine, to an extent) made this an interesting experience. I LOVE the puzzle gameplay, the artstyle, and the soundtrack. The Cathedral can go choke on it though - AI companions just doesn't work with this game. That's really the only blemish I can find in what I otherwise consider to be one of the crowning jewels in Atlus' library. This was a steal for the $3 I paid for it on Xbox! Kinda glad I also have a physical copy for PS3, since I ended up liking it so much.

#14 Brandish: The Dark Revenant - Completed 4/4/17
#15 Persona 5 - Completed 4/13/17
#16 Kamiko - Completed 4/14/17
#17 Puyo Puyo Tetris - Completed 4/23/17
#18 The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky – the 3rd - Completed 5/6/17

Brandish - I've been sleeping on this one a while, I bought it on launch. Great game! It's pretty different as far as dungeon crawlers go, I'd definitely recommend it to get someone new to the genre acquainted.

Persona 5 - Loved it, I might have to go back to plat trophy it but man would that be a time sink!

Kamiko - This is the definition of short and sweet. I liked it, fun game, worth $5 Carrying keys is kinda annoying.

Puyo Puyo Tetris - Awesome, great, I love it. I was never really into either Puyo Puyo OR Tetris, but I've been having a fantastic time with this. Even after getting my review out I keep coming back to it. It's really at home on the Switch too.

Trails in the Sky - the 3rd - Fantastic send-off for Estelle and co. It feels like Falcom knew that anyone that had invested enough time into the franchise to get this far would have a bond to these characters so they went all the way with their backstories and some really sentimental scenes that truly felt earned. I know folks seem to like SC better for the most part, but this game is easily my favorite of the bunch.

#19 Eiyuu Densetsu: Zero no Kiseki - Completed 6/4/17
#20 ARMS - Completed 6/18/17

Zero no Kiseki - I'm really glad I played this, and I can't wait to get to Ao no Kiseki. I loved this game quite a bit, and it really is a crime this hasn't been officially translated yet. It, and I assume Ao no Kiseki, really deserve to be enjoyed by more people.

ARMS - It took me a while to warm up to it, but I think I might be addicted to this game now. It's simple enough to pick up and play, but also has enough depth that I feel like no two matches are truly the same. Really happy I picked it up!

#21 Implosion: Never Lose Hope – Completed 7/10/17
#22 Abzu – Completed 7/30/17
#23 Jet Set Radio – Completed 8/6/17
#24 Splatoon 2 – Completed 8/15/17

Implosion – I was feeling the itch for a new Switch game! But seriously, I wanted to play something on it before Splatoon hit, and I ended up buying a few indies, this being one. It's pretty good! Not the best game on the Switch by any means, but definitely worth what I paid. A nice little isometric action game, not unlike what you'd see from Platinum Games. Solid play.

Abzu – It was pretty and besides that I don't have too much to say here. It was probably worth playing for the eye candy, at least.

Jet Set Radio – I pretty much tore through this in a few days. I was feeling something 3D platform-y that would still be somewhat short that I could breeze through in a few afternoons. I never played it growing up, but it definitely aged better than I was expecting it to! Solid Tony Hawk-lite mechanics with an awesome soundtrack and a charming setting/artstyle.

Splatoon 2 – I owned Splatoon, but I never really played it much – and I outright never touched the single player. I decided to check it out this time around since the game was sticking with me a lot more this time around, and I've been picking at the single player every now and then popping the Switch out of the dock at my desk and plopping on my couch to play a few levels. I'm glad I did, because the campaign was surprisingly great.

#25 Sonic Mania - Completed 8/19/17
#26 Ys Seven - Completed 8/20/17
#27 Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana – Completed 8/27/17

Sonic Mania - Not much to say here that hasn't already been said. It's a classic 2D Sonic game, and it's fantastic! Glad it turned out well.

Ys Seven - I played through this for review, so if you want some impressions you can find them here. It's a good port, and the game itself holds up well.

Ys VIII - I also played this for review, but I'll just say it was my GOTY last year on Vita and the PS4 version is even better. Shame about the translation though, NISA didn't do a great job on it.

#28 Destiny 2 – Completed 9/8/17
#29 Cuphead – Completed 10/5/17
#30 Chaos;Child – Completed 10/13/17
#31 Titan Souls – Completed 10/13/17

Been a while since the last update! There was a big gap between 28/29, but I've been speeding up lately.

Destiny 2 - I enjoyed what I played before and since, the raid was especially nice. Looking forward to the DLC.

Cuphead - Loved it. It was a nice challenge, and the gameplay was simple and fun. Fantastic artstyle, too.

Chaos;Child - Best VN I've ever read. I'll be coming back to it in the future, for sure. Really dark and disturbing at times.

Titan Souls - Downloaded and played it randomly while at a buds house, on his spare PS4. It was a brisk 2 hour playthrough, and I greatly enjoyed the boss fights.

Point n' Click game based on the book 'I have no mouth and I must scream'. Pretty standard PnC game. Didn't enjoy it as much as I expected TBH.

Yeah, it's such a disappointing game!
I played it last year and wrote:
Found the short story fascinating when I read it as a child. The game was actually not that great. I found the puzzles/problem solving to be boring or obnoxious and pretty much everything good about it was "already done" in story form. I mean, the gameplay didn't add anything to the tale of AM and it's people, it just made it annoying.

Edit.: Wrong Thread. Fuck me!

#1 Axiom Verge (PC) - 10 Hrs 09 Mins (1/03/2017) - Score: 8.5/10
I really liked the game's oppressive and dark atmosphere, its strange world and story. Also, not unimportant for a metroid-like, the level design is top-notch and the world is a joy to explore. It's truly impressive that everything, including the enthralling soundtrack, was made by a single developer. My only complaint would be the final boss, which is far too difficult unless you use cheap tricks.

Completed:

1) Diablo 3 (XB1) - 1/2/17. 9/10
Amazing game. Will still go back from time to time, but the console port is just so amazing. Crusader all the way.

2) watch dogs 2 (xb1) - 1/8/17 9/10
Loved the game. So much better than the first. Only problem was some of the missions got really repetitive. Would highly recommend.

3) Mass Effect 1 (Xb1)
I have played the entire mass effect series before but I planned on replaying them so I could get ready for the newest one. Getting through ME1 knowing how much better gameplay ME2/3 has was brutal. I just mainlined the story so I could get to 2.

4) Mass Effect 2 (Xb1)
What can you say about mass effect. Its just an amazing series. ME2 improves on so much that ME1 did wrong. Such a great and wonderful game.

5) Dragon Quest 8: Journey of the Cursed King (3ds) 9.5/10
One of the best JPRG I have ever played. I was so impressed with this game. I can't believe I never got into the Dragon Quest series before this. So many great things to say about this game.

6) Battlefield 1 9/10
While I haven't completed the single player campaign, I don't buy battlefield games for that. I have put over 200 hours into the Multiplayer so I assume this can count for a completed game with level 10 of everything. This is my goto game when I need to just relax and play a shooter. I love the game and continue to see myself playing this until the next battlefield releases.

7) Zelda: Breath of the wild 9/10
While I am a huge zelda fan, this game has its flaws. It's frequent frame rate drops are an issue. I feel like the music could have been done a lot better. The lack of story, which is normal for Zelda, never captures me. Overall I enjoyed it and loved what they did. But not my top.

8) Horizon: Zero Dawn 9.5/10
This game was a stand out surprise to me. I loved everything about the story and what it did. The combat was new and refreshing and also challenging. I really hope they make some DLC for this game so it gives me a reason to go back in.

Currently playing
Mass Effect: Andromeda

Really made me love the music and i enjoyed the game more thanks to it
Yeah I played it last year for the challenge. I have no idea why I didn't get to it earlier, since I got it free on GOG when I joined way back. Loved pretty much everything about it :D

Almost did it last year with 46 games... well let's try again... This time I will have a good start 'cause I had some games that I started on the 2016 last weeks... :p

January - 109h

Game1:Shadow of the Beast - 15 Hours - 9/10 - PS4
I was a fan of the Amiga SotB. So I really liked this remake. The graphic, the music, the gamaplay... everything is made with passion and with an eye to the original game. The game is fun but not perfect, with major problems in some platform sections, in particular if you aim to the platinum. I got the platinum and loved it.

Game2: Doom - 13 Hours - 9.5/10 - PS4
From Bethesda, after Wolfenstein, another great remake. Doom is like a dream become true. All is perfect. Level design, monster design, gameplay. It's incredible how good the game is... it recalls a lot the original games fun, but in a modern way. It's really nearly perfect. Everything is there... the double shotgun. the BFG, the chainsaw, the fun, the gore... there is also an interesting plot and the doom guy is spectacular. I don't play much multiplayer, just tryed that and I had fun. Also the snapmap editor looks really good.

Game3: Circuit Scramble - 2 Hours - 7/10 - Android
I was looking for a fresh puzzle game to play on my phone and found this. It's fun and enough challenging. Not the game of the year, but worth a try. :)

Game4: Zero Time Dilemma - 22 Hours - 8/10 - PSVITA
Really loved Virtue Last Reward, but never played 999 (going to get the nonary games when it comes out). I found this less appealing than VLR. At the end I liked it, the puzzles were easier but that's not a real minus... I found the plot a bit more confusing overall and in particular I didn't feel the urge to not "die" like in the last game. Still a valid title and overall an interesting plot.

Game5: Azkend 2 - 4 Hours - 7/10 - PSVITA
Classic Puzzle game like CandyCrush and similar, nice artworks... nothing memorable, free with Psplus. Enjoyed it for the hours it lasted, plus played some time trial and puzzle levels.

Game6: Titan Souls - 5 Hours - 8/10 - PSVITA
On my wishlist for some time, got free with plus! :)
A very nice boss rush game, with some exploration. It looks like a Shadow of the Colossus in 2D, but it lacks the emotions and the meaning of the exploration, that here its bad on my hopinion, it just make you waste time trying to find other titans to kill... but the figths are all different, more or less, and engaging. Not going to try the harder difficulty.

Game7: Day of The Tentacle Remastered - 3 Hours - 8/10 - PSVITA
I'm not good in these kind of games, in particular these old one... too hard for me, and I always like to play following a walktrought, and so I did. I know it's not how it's meant to be done, but that's how I like to play most of point and click games! I liked it, not my lucasart best game (sam&max and Indiana Jones are the best to me), but the game was fun.

Game8: Rise of the Tomb Raider - 12 Hours - 7/10 - PS4
I was a fan of the 2013 remake, but this one felt bad. AI is terrible stupid, game is mostly boring for some reason, the puzzles are too easy... I loved the idea of the bow used for puzzles, but they are too much similar, also the hook has the same function in some ways, so it's repetitive... graphic and art in general is very good. Story is... well script is all bad in this game... I hope they do better with the next.

Game9: Steins Gate 0 - 22 Hours - 9/10 - PSVITA
Steins Gate is one of my top 5 game of all time, so I had huge expectations for this "sequel/prequel". I was not disappointed overall... I platinumed it (well it's actually mandatory to see everything...), and the ending... is a bit disappointing... but I won't spoil it... overall the story change from Time Travel to AI, and it's interesting. The plot not solid like the previous one, but still great.

Game10: Pac-Man Champ. DX - Many Hours - 9/10 - ANDROID
Playing this game for a while now... I liked the old pac-man, and I think this revision is quite interesting and entertaining! Many modes, different levels... it's really really good! A fresh version of a classic! :)

Game11: Robinson: The Journey - 8 Hours - 8/10 - PSVR
Despites the fact that I was able to play only 30m at time before having some nausea issues (nothing terrible, but I prefer to stop at first sign), the game was really good. The graphic first it's one of the best for the PSVR, the dinosaurs are realistic enough and huge. The puzzles are only so and so, I acually preferred the action sections where you had to climb things, or hide from Velociraptors... these were fun. Overall a nice experiece and a really good lenght considering also all the trophies (I didn't get platinum, also had some glitches actually...).

Game12: Lara Croft Go - 3? Hours - 8/10 - Android
Got it for free all the three "GO" games and started with this. Wow, I didn't expect such a nice game! Puzzle are simple but fun, graphic syle is really good, and the feeling of Lara old adventure and exploring is all here. I really liked it. Next one will be the "Deus Ex Go" game

February - 70h

Game13: Deus Ex Go - 3? Hours - 6.5/10 - Android
Another Go game from Square... I personally enjoyed this less than the Lara Go, some mechanics are even not explained and visually is all the same... sure it have more content, and post game, and a plot... but definitely worse overall to me.

Game14: Badland - 3? Hours - 5/10 - Android
It's the third time that I restart this game... I don't like it, and every time I give it another possibility. That is the last one, I just don't get why is so well received. Boring mechanic, actually not so good graphic. I don't get it.

Game15:Deus Ex: Mankind Divided - 22 Hours - 8.5/10 - PS4
I really loved the come back of DE with Human Revolution, and I can say that I liked this chapter too. It's not well written and additting as the previous one, but I liked the idea of make you live the diffidence of the peoples because you are mechanized, and all the change of climate after the events of the previous game. I played (as HR) all in stealth without killing anyone, and there are a lot of possibilities to play the sections of the game, that is really good, but also make the game a bit easier overall... really don't care about the "breach" mode, played the short free DLC. Would love to see a sequel.

Game16 :World of Final Fantasy - 39 Hours - 8/10 - PS4
I actually Love FF series, so I couldn't buy this... the game is a huge love letter to fans, but also playable by newcomers. Graphic is good, music is nice too with a lot of beautiful remixes... story is just so-so, but char interactions and overall the game is very cheerful and with childish jokes, but I liked anyway. I just found really creepy the true ending dancing video... O_O

March - 63h

Game17 :Not a Hero - 4 Hours - 8/10 - PS4
Got it for free with PSPLUS. I really loved it! Is a fast pacing action game, with a fantastic dark humor, a smart gameplay, easy to understand but hard to master, also thanks to the many mission objectives and different characters to choose! A real surprise! EDIT: Played a bit more and got 100%.

Game18: SOMA - 10 Hours - 9/10 - PS4
A great Horror-Scifi story! Not so scary after all, but a great atmosphere, a really interensting story to unflod trought the narration and also exploring the places. The graphic is just so-so, but everything else is so good that you won't mind, while unfolding the mistery of why you are inside this mechanical place, alone, after a "brain operation" of some sort.

Game19: Call of Duty Advanced Warfare - 10 Hours - 6/10 - PS4
I don't play CoD if not I find it at a real bargain price, this time was 5€. The game is the same CoD... all american hero soldiers story, boring shooting, stupid AI... It's not a terrible game after all, so a 6 is mandatory for me, but nothing more. I don't care about multi, maybe this is where it shines.

Game20: Dishonored 2 - 16 Hours - 8.5/10 - PS4
Platnumer the first one, and loved it. This one has a worse story, less interesting... but the game is still amazing. Top notch level design, two char to choose from, a lot of power to try and different ways to play it. I finished it first all stealth and no kill, awesome. Then I played full chaos, less awesome. Anyway a real solid game.

Game21: A King’s Tale: Final Fantasy XV - 3 Hours - 7.5/10 - PS4
Finally released for free. I think it's a nice beat-em-up, to be free even too good. The different attacks, combos, magic, environmental utilization for freezing, burning... there is a nice amount of content and variations, even for a 1.5h game. Graphic is nice too, and extra content is there. Liked it.

Game22: No Man's Sky - 20 Hours - 8/10 - PS4
That is a strange game. It both has a lot of content and lacks of it. It's fun to discover and explore new planets and lifeforms, to visit space stations, and to trade and talk to aliens. But everything is mostly without a real objective. I understand this is a "genre" like let's say Minecraft, but it's not much for me. Still I found it really engaging, and will probably go back playing it in the future, very probably.

Game23: Disc Jam - 3 Hours - 6.5/10 - PS4
Free PSPlus. Well... what can I say? The game is like a futuristic Tennis with a fresbee. It's all arcade, enough fun... but lacks of content. Also is completely multiplayer, and the point is matchmarking is looooooong... so not the best... but also not bad.

April - 130h

Game24: PES2017 - 15 Hours - 8/10 - PS4
Got in super discount, this year I was not interested in a football game, but for 15€... The game is essentially the same as the last year with some minor changes... but I liked more the Club part, it's more refined now! Not played much, probably will play some more as always do with this kind of games, but for now that's it.

May- 105h

Game25: Phoenix Wright: Spirit of Justice- 25 Hours - 9.5/10 - 3DS
Another fantastic chapter of this series! I really love that game, it's sad that at least in EU there is no more physical edition, and even the ITA translation has been dropped... but the game is really good, as always the 5 chapter are awesome, and so are the protagonist and antagonist, with their incredible design. It's so much fun I can't wait for the next! :D

Game26: Severed - 10 Hours - 8.5/10 - PSVITA
Another PSPLUS free game. I wanted to buy it but they gifted before I did... :p I'm in love with Drinkbox, loved both their previous game, in particular Mutant Blob, and this one is another original and well packed game, fun, easy to understand but challenging to master. And I actually hate first person dungeon crawler... grats to the devs

Game27: Persona 5 - 80 Hours - 9.5/10 - PS4
What a trip! 80h but it was so smooth that I didn't felt them. The game is almost perfect in mechanics, the char are good but not perfect, the story is nice, the artstyle and the music are over the top. A fantastic JRPG, really worth the wait. (P4 is still my favourite) Final boss was quite easy with my team at lv77, but I don't care, I like to be overpowered once in a while... :p

Game28: Fire Emblem Heroes - Many Hours - 8/10 - Android
Never played a game of the series. I think it's a fair and fun tactic game, I didn't get much into it after all, probably because I'm not a big fan of the series nor of tactics game... but I appreciated it for the time i've spent on it.

June- 62h

Game29: Resident Evil 7 - 12h - 9/10 - PSVR
I played all the game in VR and it's incredible. The VR adds so much to the experience that trying to play it after without it result in a boring experience. The game is fun and well made, but the VR is GAME CHANGING. Really, if you can play it in VR. Great return of a classic finally! The game starts as a surivival, then it became more action, but it's still scary and it's not the action you can see in RE4 to RE6, it's more to the first games, where you actually get powerfull weapons from mid game on, but it still play as a survival mostly....

Game30: Shin Megami Tensei IV - 10h - 3/10 - 3DS
This was my second try with this game... first try I was bored and stopped playing, I tryed again from the beginning and got much more far... but really hating it. I LOVED persona series, SMT3, SMT Digital Devil Saga... but this one is really boring. Boring story, gameplay start so hard even at easy, and then it became super easy... graphic is disappointing, dialogues and chars are not interesting (as far as I went), map is damn confusing... really I can't play this, I give up....

Game31: The Last Guardian - 12h - 9/10 - PS4
Bad controls and framerate, but everything else is top. The emotions, TRICO looks really alive both in animations and how he reacts, the art and the music... it's just another UEDA masterpiece, with good and bad. Fantastic game. Exploring the places with not HUD or hints everywhere remember me how the games were made in the past, not to help too much the player but to let him discover things and try to find out solutions on how to go on... I really liked this aspect of it.

Game32: Tales from the Borderlands - 10h - 8.5/10 - PS4
Thx for PSPLUS to let me play this. I would have never buyed it, but I really enjoyed it. It starts a bit slow, but then all is perfect. Action, chars, story... everything is very good, fun and entertaining, never boring. A nice adventure, even with not much real choices with the story, but it's ok...

Game33: J-Stars Victory Vs - 10h - 6/10 - PSVITA
I loved the DS game, with his 2D stile and smash bros. gamplay. This one is in 3D, but is much more boring to me... there are a lot of chars but only few stages, but the problem is the combat system, to me it does not work good on 3d, is not fast enough and mostly boring.... it's a game full of content and a lot of fanservice though.

Game34: Not Not - 5h - 7/10 - Android
Not the most original game ever, but fun and challenging. You need a lot of concentration to win, and there are VERY difficult levels here! Nice for some quick plays.

Game35: VVVVV - 3h - 6/10 - PSVITA
I read a lot about this game in the past, but I was not attracted... I already played similar games. Got it with PSPLUS, and tried it for some hours... I got pretty far but at the end I gave up because I didn't find it so fun after all...

July - 17h

Game36: Don't Die Mr. Robot! - 3h - 7/10 - PSVITA
A fun bullet hell, I love it's simplicity, I will keep it on my Vita for a while for quick plays!

Game37: FFXV: Episode Gladiolus - 3h - 7/10 - PS4
A so-so DLC. I liked the new gameplay for Gladio, but the game is a corridor, there is no real new plot and char infos, and after ending it there is just a time attack and a final fight.... only 5€ though...

Game38: Danganronpa VR - 15m - ?/10 - PSVR
It's a super short demo of a possible Danganrompa Trial in VR. For how short it is, I LOVED it. Really. The VR would a perfect way to play DR trials! Also the final punishment... if you are a fan of the series, you should try it.

Game39: Spiderman VR - 15m - ?/10 - PSVR
A short demo for the Homecoming film. Played with the 2 moves, it's fun to be spiderman for that short time, and a shame that it ends when it start to be really fun. But enjoyed it. Would buy a VR game with spidey!

Game40: Tigerball - ?h - 8/10 - Android
That's a very simple game, you play with this ball and have to push it with one touch in the basket. But it's fun, there are upgrades, levels have a lot of variety. Nice really!

Game41: FFXV: Episode Prompto - 3h - 7/10 - PS4
A little better than the other DLC. Gameplay is a nice tps, with some veichle runs, a nice amount of story this time. The extra are again short and not so good... let's see what we get with Ignis DLC in the end of the year...

Game42: Resident Evil 7 DLC1 - 3h - 7/10 - VR
Bought this on sale... played all in VR (except the part that can't be played in VR).
The "room escape" was interesting, I had a couple of jump scares and overall was very fun to find out how to escape. The survival mode was an intense experience in VR... by the end I was really fatigued and my heart was beating a lot and I was sweating... It's a very heavy experience in VR, but wow. The last part of the DLC was non-vr for some reason, too hard for me, probably I will try again later.

Game43: Wonder Boy The Dragon's Trap - 5h - 9/10 - PS4
Never played the original, but I wanted to play a platform old style. The art of the game is AWESOME, both graphic and music. The gameplay is old school (it's more a remaster than a remake to me), and very fun to play and explore. It's a bit short overall, but really a nice game with all the animal transformations, the exploration of different places, and the hidden levels. Almost a 10/10.

Game44: Dragonball Dokkan - ?h - 9/10 - Android
2 years of playing and more... I love this gatcha game... I'm mostly ftp, and I still enoy playing it because with time you don't really need to spend real money. The game is still entartaining and with a lot of new content, for a fan of dragonball is the paradise, really. It has also a lot of grinding, but that's what ftp are made for, so I don't complain too much...

August - 70h

Game45: Level 22 - 4h - 6.5/10 - PSVITA
A nice little stealth game, with a lot of nice humor. The game is fairly easy, but it's fun to play and the humor is really top. Loved it, and it was free with psplus.

Game46: Downwell - 4h - 6/10 - PSVITA
Heard a lot about it, a lot of good things. I find it is a fun game, but too limited and nothing I will remember in the future. A super hard vertical shooting game, with some randomness... probably a good mobile game, but just a normal game overall.

Game47: Root Letter - 15h - 7.5/10 - PSVITA
I don't know how much I really liked that game... I can say that I overall liked the story, but not the gameplay, I would have preferred a lot just to read the text than to have to explore the locations and doing the investigations... that's why at a certain point I used a guide, and I liked it much more than before.

Game48: Sonic Mania - 6h - 9.5/10 - PS4
Sonic is back! 16-bit Sonic at his best, with a lot of fan service. I also liked the 3D sonic games like Generations and Unleashed, but it's clear that the level design and gameplay of the 16-bit sonic is still the best. A great collection with incredible well made new levels. The challenge is fair and the game has a lot of replayability.

Game49: Uncharted: Lost Legacy - 8h - 9.0/10 - PS4
I would give it a 10 if it was a main entry, but as a spin-off most of the mechanics are the same. The game is fantastic, the characters are optimal and the script is great, also the villain is a nice one, even considering it's a classic one. The gameplay is refined, with an open space really well made and not empty as it is in some cases during UC4. Really fantastic.

Game50: Yakuza 0 - 30h - 9.0/10 - PS4
The game is as always a great game. This time I finally can play just with 2 characters that I like, Kiryu and Majima, and know their past. The story is good, the gameplay is the same with some improvements, the environment and a lot of things to do are all there. The same good old Yakuza! And I think subquest are a little better this time too! Great entry in the series!

Game51: Comix Zone - 3h - 7.5/10 - Android
I never finished this game, and I still can't even in this release on android... but I somehow find it fun anyway to replay every time from the beginning. Nice art, nice combat... I should see a playtrought...

Might as well claim a post here and start writing stuff down already. This might be my last year to do this and I'll probably fail miserably because I'm heading off to law school in the fall, but dammit I'm going to get as many games played as I can (barring the release of a new Monster Hunter game of course).

GAME #1 - Shantae: Half-Genie Hero - 5 Hours - 8/10 - 1/2/17

Shantae's first HD game is a treat for the eyes and ears, but it's a little short, the difficulty towards the end of the game is way too high, and a lot of the power ups you get are basically worthless. Also, while the switch to more linear levels works out really well when you play through the levels on your first go, backtracking is a pain without a map to help you determine where you have and haven't been. Still, the writing is really solid, there's a lot of great set-pieces, and the platforming is fun for most of the game (again, that last level really sucks).

COMPLETED LIST
1) Shantae: Half-Genie Hero - 8/10
2) Song of the Deep - 9/10
3) Marlow Briggs and the Mask of Death - 4/10
4) Stories: The Path of Destinies - 6/10
5) Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight - 9/10
6) Darksiders Warmastered Edition - 6/10
7) Bayonetta - 8/10
8) Bayonetta 2 - 10/10
9) Fire Emblem Heroes - 6/10
10) Victor Vran - 6/10
11) The Wonderful 101 - 7/10
12) Hollow Knight - 10/10
13) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - 10/10
14) Shovel Knight - 10/10
15) Hyper Light Drifter - 10/10
16) Valdis Story: Abyssal City - 9/10
17) Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment - 9/10
18) Grow Home - 7/10
19) Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap - 9/10
20) Kamiko - 6/10
21) Old Man's Journey - 6/10

I guess I can try for this for now. I play a lot of long RPGs so this isn't going to be close. I do have a few almost done already.

Completed
1. Super Mario Run (iOS) - 6 Hours - ★★★☆☆ 1/1/2017
I finished all the pink coin challenges and some of the purple/black. Fun little game. I'll come back to it a bit every now and then to do a Toad Rally, but I'm mostly done with it.

2. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC (PC) - 65 Hours - ★★★★☆ 1/5/17
I have a few issues with how some of the plot was resolved, but beyond that TitS and TitS SC are quintessential JRPGs with a lot of heart. The battle system isn't overly complicated and there can be some kind of long fights, but it is very satisfying to figure out and try to master. The characters are mostly great, I say mostly, because I'm one of a few who don't really like the main character Estelle (everyone else seems to be head over heels with her... I don't see it. Literally every side character is more interesting than her). The music is a real strong point, I hum The Whearabouts of Light constantly, and music doesn't normally stick in my head very well. Great sense of world structure and it has varied and interesting side quests that contribute to the main story proportionally by how much you put into them. I wish they cut about 10 hours of fat from the end game though, it could have been a tighter experience. I found myself rushing to finish it by the end.

3. Rusty Lake Hotel(PC) - 2.3 Hours - ★★★☆☆ 1/8/17
Interesting little escape room game that I got during the Steam sale for $1. Had an eerie atmosphere and an interesting take on the protagonist. It must clearly be part of a bigger universe, the ending was very sudden and pointed to other connected games. I haven't looked into it, but maybe I will in the future. The puzzles themselves were pretty standard fare, nothing too befuddling, but they were still satisfying as long as you aren't a complete veteran of the genre. I did miss some of the extra ingredients I could have gotten to 100% the game so those were hidden pretty well. Worth the price of admission and the minimal time expenditure it takes to experience it.

4. Super Mario 3D World(PC) - 11 Hours - ★★★★☆ 1/22/17
This is what I would have imagined a 3D Mario being before I played Super Mario 64. Really inventive game that is stuffed full of imaginative level design concepts. I got all of the green stars (I think) through World: Bowser for a total of 242. I might go back and try the extra worlds later, but for now I'm a little burned out.

5. LIMBO(PC) - 3.3 Hours - ★★★★☆ 1/22/17
Nice little game! Reminds me of a less pretentious Braid. I only had to look up one puzzle. Figured out the rest pretty fast.

6. Wonderboy and the Dragon's Trap (Switch) - 6 Hours - 5/16/2017 ★★★★☆ I really enjoyed Wonderboy. The game is apparently a remake, but I have never played the original so it was all new to me. The updated style and music was all very slick... I'm glad I didn't have to play through with the original style. The different monster forms allow for a nice variety in play style and switch up fast enough that none of them get old. There was a bit of exploration involved, which kept me guessing on where I was supposed to go next, but I only really got stuck in one or two of the more obtuse designs. My only other complaint would be that it didn't have a very satisfying end sequence. Definitely worth the $20!

7. Kamiko (Switch) - 1.1 Hours - ★★☆☆☆ 5/18/2017
So this was a quick $5 game for Switch, so I decided to check it out. I honestly couldn't recommend it to people based off my experience. The game is pretty simple in design and is clearly meant for speedrunning, but I had problems with the enemy respawn pop-ins that would show up basically on top of you and prevented you from actually running around too fast. It was frustrating and really the only reason I beat it was because it was so short. Others may enjoy more than I did.

8. Wolfenstein: The New Order (PC) - 12 Hours - ★★★★☆ 6/11/2017
What a great singleplayer shooter! Killing Nazi's is always fun and this game is no exception. The best part is the suprising depth of story and well written characters that supplement the Nazi killing.

9. Bit. Trip. Runner. (PC) - 4.9 Hours - ★★★☆☆ 6/16/2017
Equal bits frustrating and mesmerizing.

10. The Banner Saga (PC) - 9.1 Hours - ★★★★☆ 6/26/2017
Alphabetically this was on top of my Steam backlog category so I chose to dive into it and really enjoyed the music and artstyle of the game. The gameplay loop was great, just enough strategy and difficulty to keep you on your feet. It may be one of the few games where it really feels like your decision and leadership make serious changes in how you reach the ending. I have a feeling that if I played again I would end up on a completely different route with potentially different characters. I'm not entirely compelled to play the sequel right away, but I do recommend giving this a try.

11. INSIDE (PC) - 3.4 Hours - 6/30/2017 ★★★★☆
INSIDE is basically LIMBO+ for 80% of the game. It has the same compartmental puzzle platforming sections with sufficiently satisfying solutions and subtle storytelling through background imagery and scene progression. The only part of the game that effectively separates it from LIMBO is
the last portion of the game, which flips the power dynamics of the game and you become the horrible monster everyone is running away from. It is quite the ending and definitely worth playing through the rest of the short game for.

12. Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number (PC) - 3.4 Hours - 7/9/2017 ★★★☆☆
Hotline Miami 2 is an interesting sequel to a classic. It does everything you think a sequel should do. It's bigger, it has more content and story, it has a level editor, and it retains the same core game play and atmosphere that made the original an instant hit. That said it still doesn't come off anywhere near as good as the first one. As a game it felt too long actually, it overstayed its welcome. The bigger levels were actually a flaw and made them more frustrating to complete especially towards the end where one mistake would erase the last 5-10 minutes of flawless work you did. I still enjoyed it and the music was potentially even better than the first. Only play it if you really liked the original. Even then don't be afraid to put it down if you feel something is off.

In-Progress

3. Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past (3DS) - 20 Hours
I just got to where I can use the class system... so I probably have a ways to go.

2. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC (PC) - 60 Hours
I'm on the last boss sequence and anticipate finishing the game soon.

3. Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past (3DS) - 20 Hours
I just got to where I can use the class system... so I probably have a ways to go.
You are now 1/4 of thr way thru dq7 ;)

In for 2017 as well. 2016 was my first year with a proper PC in years. Huge backlog of classic games to play in 2017.

*goes back to MP games*

1: LIMBO (PC) - 4.9h
I enjoyed the puzzles. I got stuck in one and had to check Youtube. I didn't like the aesthetics so much. It had this grain when you take a photo in the dark with high light sensitivity (ISO).
The platforming was not great. At least I didn't like. I still recommend this game.

2. Batman Arkham Asylum (PC) - 12.3h
It was fun. But the combat gets old quickly because in fact you not controlling much. It is the definition of "press A for awesome". The other thing I didn't like was all that detective mode thing. Specially because it is widely adopted in many games now. Assassin's Creed and Batman really popularised this system ("automatic combat" and "wall-hack vision").
The stealth parts were enjoyable. Also, it make thing that I miss this open-linear games. You have the asylum, you are mostly free to roam, but it doesn't loose the focus.

3. Tomb Raider 2013 (PC) - 12.5h
It is the third time I played this game (PS3>PS4>PC). I don't if it is a "Tomb Raider" game or not, it is amazing, gameplay is top-notch. Sure, characters and narrative are not as good as in Uncharted, but the game itself is better in imho. I was not collecting everything, otherwise the game would be boring (I hope Rise is not as open as I'm thinking it is and that the "no dual-wielding" is bs after the ending of 2013).
This game has the right amount of easy platforming, minor puzzles, stealth, action and cutscenes for my taste. I really just wish characters were more likeable.

4. Jotun (PC) - 6.7h
Beautiful and challenging game. Final boss might be too challenging. It is a top-down viking adventure game. It is heavy on the mythology side. The action is ok, mostly on boss fights. You don't fight too many enemies among your way to the boss, but the exploration is good.

5. Gone Home (PC) - 1.7h
Finally! Neat game, despite being late to the party and already having the ending spoiled. I recommend even if you know what it is all about.

6. Remember Me (PC) - 9.8h
Flawed gem. So much potential, some good things going on. Writing is terrible, but not being able to finish combos because you hit another guy after dodging or because your target died was something not really well-thought. Great art, ok combat. Memory remix thing was a miss for me. I still recommend if you like beat 'em ups/hack and slash games.

7. Resident Evil 7 (PC) - 12.5h
I'm so glad it isn't Outlast or P.T.! That demo was too much like P.T. RE7 is pure traditional Resident Evil: ammo conservation, skipping combat, inventory management, light puzzles, keys for a number of doors.

8. Ori and the Blind Forest (PC) - 10.0h
Second playthrough (Xbox One>PC). Beautiful game. Great platforming, which can have some challenging parts, but not bullshit. It feels good to pass through these difficult parts.

Currently playing more games at the same time than I should, but hey, let's beat them!
Playing: Super Mario 3D World, Resident Evil 6 (Sherry and Jake next with GF), Assassin's Creed 1 (yes, the first), Kingdom Hearts 1, Alice Madness Returns

Game 4: Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse (3DS) - 60 Hrs 31 Mins (1/3/2017)

#One of my favorite 2016 games and RPGs along with Trails of Cold Steel 2 and Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE! Loved this game more than IV since it was tougher while having improvements in the way partners work and the battle system, while not really improved that much in my opinion overall, still was really great. OST was great as usual and I actually liked the cast even more than the original SMT IV. The map was a lot better to navigate, which was one of my biggest complaints with SMT IV. While the areas were straight out of SMT IV for the most part, they still felt great to me. That might be because I beat SMT IV when it released, got all the endings and stopped. Definitely a game to get for your 3DS if you like JRPGs and the SMT franchise.

You are now 1/4 of thr way thru dq7 ;)

Yeah, I figured. I am super overleveled for now and I insta-grinded my way to the first complete class for the Hero, Maribel, and Ruff, so hopefully I don't get stuck at another point of grinding for a while.

It'll be a game I play more when I travel or before I go to bed at this point. It probably won't be complete for a few months.

Having played very little other than destiny since its launch my PS4 backlog is huge. Now with a huge content gap it is time for me to get playing other games and this challenge should help spur me on.

Completed

1. Titan Fall 2: Brilliant campaign. The movement and gunplay are fantastic. Many of the levels have a unique mechanic to add variety and it keeps things interesting without becoming annoying. Decent narrative and a pleasure to play. I've also spent some time with the multiplayer and will probably keep going back to it on and off.

2. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare: Enjoyable campaign and the ship combat was enjoyable. Enough variation between that and ground combat to stop it being repetitive. Story was half decent as well. Not as good as titan fall though. I'm enjoying the multiplayer a bit as a nice diversion from destiny. I will probably dip in and out of it over the months.

3. Ratchet and Clank : Loved the original and this remake is a blast from the past. Very pretty game and the weapons are a lot of fun. Using the weapons in effective combinations can make you feel pretty OP which is good. Platforming elements are basic but there is so much to explore. I might pop back on it and try challenge mode and pick up some more secrets but for the purpose of this thread this game is done.

4. FIFA 17: I could play this game a lot more but for the sake of this challenge I am classing the completion of The Journey as it being done. Brilliant addition to the series and I hope it is something that is built upon in future iterations. As for the rest of the game. It's FIFA, minor changes each year but it is still the same game. This version will sort my football fix for the next few years.

5. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered: Fantastic remaster. Campaign still stands up as one of the best for fps. So many amazing set pieces. The multiplayer hasn't aged well and the netcode in the remaster doesn't seem as good as it was back in the day.

6. Rise of the Tomb Raider : I loved the reboot when I played through it on PS4 and I expected this to be more of the same but more refined. Turns out they just dialed everything up to 11. More tombs (yay), more puzzles (yay), more gunfights (boo), more collectibles (boo), more weapons (boo), and more abilities. It was so extreme that I gave up caring about abilities and weapon upgrades and only grabbed collectibles that were on my path. The level design is beautiful and exploring was great. But I was glad to make it to the end of a fairly lacklustre story.

7. Circuit Scramble : A logic puzzle game on Android where you have to complete the working path on increasingly difficult circuits with rules added as you progress. I managed to 3 star each level, which was completing them in the fewest possible moves. Only 125 levels and takes about 2 hours to complete. Not sure where else they could take it but it was a fun diversion when unable to get on the PS4.

8. Little Big planet 3 : I'm not really interested in the creating side of this series but I enjoy the platforming and I used this as a way for my 3 year old daughter to get using a controller for some basic movements. It really is more of the same but the different characters give it a nice variation. It is very short and although I only played the main story and a few side missions it is over very quickly and you don't really get to use the other characters much at all. I would be very disappointed if I had bought it. But free on plus seems OK.

9. The Order:1886 : Got this at launch and played a few chapters before going back to destiny. This game is absolutely stunning. The world that has been built is fantastic and it is such a shame that it is let down by the actual gameplay. The shooting and cover system is not good. The frequent QTEs are well implemented but still annoying and I would rather they weren't there at all. The story line is enjoyable and the characters are interesting. It is a massive shame that more wasn't done with this world. I hope there is a sequel that can bring us back to this world but with some actual gameplay.

10. Uncharted 4: An absolutely amazing game. Best game I have played in a long time. The pacing and variation in the chapters is phenomenal and the views are jaw dropping at times. Story is fantastic and I cannot praise this game enough. Having cleared it on hard my only gripe is the combat can be infuriating at times. Especially with heavily armoured enemies.

11. Hacknet: I bought this following the Giant Bomb 2015 game of the year podcasts where Jeff was talking about it. I had a quick blast on it and enjoyed it back then but never finished it. With an update to it due in March I thought I would complete it and add it to my list for this year. It is a very fun game puzzle game that rewards an investigative mind. The later missions in it have just the right level of difficulty that keeps you searching for that one bit of information that will help you move onto the next step. Took me about 8 hours to finish everything.

12. Game of Thrones : I loved season 1 of the walking dead and I'm a fan of the GoT books and TV show. This however is not a good game. It is more of an interactive TV episode. Even more so than the walking dead. It also highlights how bad telltales engine is. If it wasn't for the story I would have given up on this.

13. Unravel : A fun little platformer that has some gorgeous visuals. It can be massively frustrating at times but it is a fairly short game. I finished it in about 5-6 hours. I am missing a lot of the secrets but I have had my fill of it. A decent game but the levels are a little too long. There is a story in there if you look hard enough but it's easy enough to ignore.

14. Grow Home: Thankfully this was a short game. I was starting to get tired of it after 2 hours and it ended not long after. I disliked the controls and although it was a fun concept it just didn't grab me. It's a shame as I had heard good things about it.

15. Limbo: Finally got around to playing this having got it free on PS+ ages ago. Fantastic little platformer. I had a lot of fun playing this and although some of the puzzles have a bit of trial and error to them it is so satisfying to complete a tricky section. It is a relatively short game, I completed it in two sittings but it is one of those that has really good pacing and I never got to the point where I was wishing it was over. I am also a big fan of how seamless the movement from one area to the next is. I recommend it to anyone who has a spare handful of hours and wants a nice chilled yet challenging platform game.

16. Injustice: Gods Among Us: I'm not normally a fan of beat 'em ups but I thought I would give this a bash in aid of clearing some of the backlog. It's not too bad a game, the remaster has some major framerate issues at times but the combat is ok. Story mode is very interesting and I like how it bounces from character to character. The little minigames that are thrown in are quite fun as well.

17. Infamous: First Light: Got this back when it was on PS+ and just never got around to playing it because of Destiny. I really enjoyed Second Son when it was released and playing this has reminded me how good the movement and abilities are. I only completed the main story in this as the challenges didn't really interest me but I may go back and do them at some point to get an easy platinum trophy. Still a beautiful game and the effects are stunning. Nice and short as well which made it a good one for clearing the backlog.

18. Transistor: I massively enjoyed this game and it is definitely one I want to do another playthrough of. The combat system is interesting and it was good to experiment to see what combinations worked. Story was good as well. Very fun little game.

19. Destiny: I have fully completed the age of triumph book which is as complete as Y3 destiny can get. Still a fantastic social game and the raids are the best bits of gaming there are. The pvp is still a horrible broken mess rewarding people with sup par connections but the pve content is fun if repetitive.

20. Hidden Folk: A nice relaxing game that has you searching hand drawn animated environments to find specific things where's wally (waldo) style. There are only a handful of levels and they vary from simple 5 minutes to complete to epic scale scenes that can take a lot longer to complete.

There's absolutely no way I'll hit those numbers in 2017, but this ought to be fun nevertheless!

GAMES FINISHED

1) Actual Sunlight - Tiny, depressing game that came with PS+ that I started and finished over my lunch break. Cast a pall over the rest of my day with its bleak, poignant tale.

2) Watch_Dogs - Decided to give this one a go since it was $11 on PSN and I absolutely love Watch_Dogs 2. The extremely low expectations I had for this game did it a lot of good as I ended up having a great time with it. Far from a perfect game and certainly not as mirthful or polished as the sequel, but all the same I enjoyed my time. Hope that the poor commercial performance of W_D2 doesn't stop this series from getting a third game.

3) Mega Man Mobile - A friend gifted this to me on the App Store as a goof. Well the joke is on him because I finished it. Absolutely horrendous version of a classic game. I hated it.

4) Mega Man 2 Mobile - After showing my friend that I beat Mega Man Mobile he immediately gifted me a copy of Mega Man 2 Mobile. It was really a bad and unpleasant experience due to the touch controls and the abysmal framerate. Really hope he does not gift me a copy of Mega Man 3 Mobile.

5) Assassin's Creed: Syndicate - I swore off this series after feeling badly burned by 3 at the Wii U launch. This game is much, much better than 3 and I'm glad I saw it through to to the end because at various times I was definitely having fun. Gameplay is still pretty basic and repetitive and I have never cared so little about a game's story, but overall there was a lot to like (especially with the PS4 Pro patch). Will probably never play a game in this series again and assuredly nothing prior to Syndicate.

6) Mega Man 3 Mobile - Unfortunately after finishing Mega Man 2 Mobile, my friend sent me Mega Man 3 Mobile. I was not surprised to find that this is a very bad port of one of my favorite games. My friend has since sent me Mega Man 4 Mobile.

7) Mega Man 4 Mobile - This is probably my least favorite of the NES Mega Man games but it's not at all bad. I am getting used to the control schemes of these games on mobile but I'm still not happy.

8) Mega Man 5 Mobile - I really like how varied the stages are in this one. Pretty cool Mega Man game even if by this point the formula needed a rest.

9) Mega Man 6 Mobile - Wow I still just love this game. It may be my favorite of the Classic series, actually. It's a bit on the easy side by the Rush power-ups are so cool and I think the level design is unique with the split paths.

10) Mega Man X (iOS) - Bad version of my favorite game ever. Can't recommend it to anyone :(

11) Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge - Surprisingly solid for the first Game Boy game in the franchise. I never played these ones so I'm excited to keep at them while I take breaks from the intensity of Resident Evil 7.

12) Mega Man II - Another game I heard was bad that I rather enjoyed. Again, solid for a Game Boy game and I'm glad I've started chipping away at these oldies.

13) Resident Evil 7: Biohazard - Totally blew me away. The VR stuff made me too nauseous to play through that way, unfortunately, but the game itself is a masterpiece. Totally different gameplay wise and yet it felt like a total return to form. Amazing game and for certain an early GOTY contender.

14) Mega Man III - These Game Boy Mega Man games seem to keep getting better and better! Really liked this one a great deal and I think they have started to gain their own identity rather than feel like cheaper portable versions around here.

15) Mega Man IV - Wow! This game really does stand on its own. I've heard that V is even better so excited to try that, but IV is a legitimately great Mega Man game and I'm so happy I finally gave these old grey games a shot :)

16) Mega Man V - Amazing game. Up there with the bes tin the classic series for sure. So original and fun.

17) Mega Man Xtreme - Not bad for what it is, basically a mash-up demake of Mega Man X1 and X2. Wouldn't go back to it but it's nice to finish off every portable 2D action based Mega Man.

18) Mega Man Xtreme 2 - Also quite flawed, but had some fun aspects and felt a bit better overall than did Xtreme 1. Good replayability, too!

19) Mega Man Maverick Hunter X - Totally great remake of Mega Man X with some things much better (additional voice acting is killer, soundtrack sounds good, nice remix of power-up locations, final Sigma stages totally different) and some things a bit worse (don't like the art style in this nearly as much as 16-bit).

20) Nioh - Man this game really is exceptional. Not sure if I like it quite as well as I do any of the 5 Soulsborne games, but if that series is taking a hiatus then this is a very welcome addition to the genre. It gets a bit repetitive towards the latter half and almost invariably requires a grind, but it's almost assuredly going to be in my top 10 at the end of the year.

21) Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment - Wow! This might be the best Shovel Knight campaign yet. The mechanics are so tight and unique. Haven't played a platformer that demands so much while remaining so enjoyable in a long time. Phenomenal work by YCG!

22) Snipperclips: Cut It Out, Together! - Finished this with my girlfriend and it was the first time we have ever completed a game in co-op together. Sometimes it is frustrating, but getting through each puzzle brought us a lot of laughs and good times. Great game.

23) Blaster Master Zero - Can't believe this game is only $10. I got so much value out of it and it was a welcome surprise to me just a week after the Switch launch. I'm a big fan and I will definitely replay it again sometime since I got the 'bad' ending on the first run. Oh well!

24) The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ - WOW! Isaac is a total blast on Switch and I've already put over 30 hours into it. Got really sucked into it and often thought "ok just one more run before homework/dinner/bed." Amazing game.

25) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Potentially the best game of my life. Put in 60 hours and haven't seen nearly all it has to offer.

26) Graceful Explosion Machine - Simple, elegant, and attractive. Really fun game to play in short sessions and definitely recommended for the price.

27) Snake Pass - Bizarre mechanics that are super unique and charming. Makes for one of the better platformers I've tried in a while. Didn't go for 100% completion because that seemed tedious and unnecessary, but I feel I got my money worth.

28) Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap - Great art and music design and yet it feels like a relic since it's a very faithful recreation of a very old game. Still, I think it was a good time for me but I'd be hesitant to recommend it to just anyone since it is difficult and obtuse.

29) Kamiko - Definitely worth $5. Short and sweet.

30) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

31) Nier: Automata - Best game I've played in years!

32) Puyo Puyo Tetris - Surprised at how much I loved this. Main adventure mode is super hard, but they let you pass the worst parts if you keep failing like I did.

33) Dark Souls 3: The Ringed City - After a rocky start it became one of my favorite pieces of DLC ever.

34) Super Bomberman R - Enjoyed playing through the main campaign co-op with my girlfriend and I hope I get chances to play it more online and with friends!

35) FAST RMX - Awesome F-Zerolike. Very difficult, but also beautiful and satisfying.

36) 1-2-Switch - I've played almost all the minigames. Does that count? Anyway I got this as a gift and I wouldn't recommend paying for it.

37) Horizon Zero Dawn - Wasn't as enamored with this one as the critical consensus indicated I would be, but it has a lot of good things going for it. Great story, fully fleshed-out protagonist, beautiful graphics, and nice gameplay mechanics. At this point it's probably not the game and probably more my feeling fatigued by open worlds.

38) Ultra Street Fighter II : The Final Challengers - Way of the Hado mode is garbage. Original game still very fun!

39) ARMS - I love this game! They have a really nice foundation to work from and I hope they're generous with DLC and new modes.

40) Mighty Gunvolt Burst - Finished it once with Gunvolt and I'll play through again with Beck. Not amazing, but it somewhat scratches the Mega Man itch. Actually gets better the more and more you put into it!

41) Yakuza 0 - This is my first taste of the series and I walked away very happy with it. Brilliant story and very deep characters. Lots to love here and I think I may come back for more when Kiwami hits.

42) Cave Story + - Still a classic! I'll replay this again with the updates later this summer.

43) Monument Valley 2 - Perfect game for a long flight. I loved it!

44) Mighty Gunvolt Burst - Second playthrough with Beck :)

45) Prey - Really wasn't feeling the game for the first half...so I restarted it from the beginning and did things differently. Fell in love! One of my favorite games of the year.

46) Crash Bandicoot 1 Remastered - Wow. Holy shit. This game is so much harder than I remember it being as a kid. Still really strong overall but I would never go back to some of these levels to 100% it.

47) Crash Bandicoot 2 Remastered - A much more reasonable game than the first in terms of difficulty but less satisfying in several ways. Rather fun all things considered but again I have no desire to return to it. Eager to see what I think of 3, which I never played.

48) Crash Bandicoot 3 Remastered - Secretly the best game in the series and by far the least frustrating. Had a really good time with everything but the motorcycle levels.

49) Castlevania - Going back to play several of these games just because I love the series so much. This is a bona fide classic.

50) Castlevania II: Simon's Quest - Played through the original version on the 3DS eShop instead of the redacted version. It's not as good without those QoL changes, but overall I still find it to be a really cool if flawed sequel. Does a lot of things right and a lot of things clumsily simply because they were novel.

51) Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse - This game has aged beautifully but it is also achingly hard even with save scumming. Probably going to replay it right away because there are so many paths and a host of different playable characters like Sypha, Alucard, and Grant (who maybe will show up in Castlevania season 2?).

52) Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow - one of the few Castlevania games I had never played up to this point. Clearly a highlight of the franchise and a nearly perfect game. Could have done without the magic seal drawing.

53) Mega Man 7 - Going through the Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 games in release order and of course started with 7. It is so good! I love how colorful and chunky everything is and I could do without how insanely difficult the final Wily battle is. Still, a very underappreciated game that I'm glad is getting a second lease on life.

54) Mega Man 8 - I think this might be my least favorite of the Classic Mega Man games but it's really not at all bad. Unfortunately it has a couple moments that I dread so much that it sours me from wanting to revisit it with any regularity (jump jump slide slide).

55) Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia - OK well I guess this is the pinnacle of Casltevania games (classic, Metroidvania, or 3D). It's nearly perfect in every respect. Great challenge. Cool, minimalistic story. Beautiful art and music. Wonderful balance of larger levels with secrets and more linear stuff. It's amazing and a new favorite for me.

56) Splatoon 2 - Really decent single-player that felt like a tutorial for the most part but still offered some good challenge and fun bosses. I managed to collect all the scrolls and sardinium so now I'll finally play some multiplayer!

57) Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes - I gave this a shot back when it first came out and I hated it, but it's the only Zelda I've never beaten so I thought I would give it another chance. Turns out I actually like it quite a bit but I wish I could have played through with friends instead of mostly solo with some randoms online. Definitely in the bottom tier of the Zelda series but I no longer hate it like I once did so that feels nice!

58) Mega Man 9 - I hadn't played this game since its original release nearly a decade ago. Since it's come out, I have played through almost every Mega Man game (all of Classic series including the Game Boy games, X series, Zero series, ZX series, and Legends series) and honestly I think this may be the best one of the Classic games. It surpasses 2 and 3 for me which says a lot. I'll be playing 10 next and I remember it being a slight step down but I'm still looking forward to revisiting that one.

59) Castlevania: The Adventure - Only picked this up on 3DS so I could continue my quest to finish all of the 15 canonical Castlevania games. This is without a doubt the worst of them all but it's not so terrible in its original context. I remember having fun with it as a kid and I kinda liked the first two stages of the game but the final two are a huge pain in the ass. Still, I was able to complete the whole thing in a lunch break so it wasn't too bad an experience. I've heard that the sequel, Belmont's Revenge, is a stronger game so I'll give that a whirl sometime soon.

60) Mega Man 10 - Not quite the triumph that I feel 9 was after revisiting it, but still a strong entry that I think is roughly around the middle of the pack as far as Classic Mega Man games go. I definitely prefer this to 8, 4, and 1 but I don't like it as well as I do 9, 3 , 2, or 6.

61) Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge - Sooooo much more fun than The Adventure. Really impressive for a Game Boy title and a satisfying and challenging Castlevania that is nearly as good as its console counterparts. Really enjoyed this game and certainly something I would recommend to fans of the classic style.

62) Sonic Mania - the best Sonic game I've ever played. Replaying now with Knuckles. It's amazing.

63) Uncharted: The Lost Legacy - now my favorite Uncharted game. Gorgeous and heartfelt and unlike 4 doesn't overstay its welcome.

64) Azure Striker Gunvolt - didn't quite scratch the itch of Mega Man X but an enjoyable game nevertheless. Hope that I enjoy the second game more.

65) Destiny 2 - I'll be playing more of this to be sure, but I loved the main campaign and got my character to level 20 so for me that at least counts as "finishing" the game if nothing else. Not a GOTY contender for me but probably top 10 material.

66) Knack 2 - Friend got this for me as a gift due to the Knack meme. I ended up thinking that it's a really good game overall and clearly a huge improvement over the first. I'm still not sure exactly why this game exists or who it's for, but it's certainly above average if in many ways unspectacular.

67) Metroid: Samus Returns - Well somehow MercurySteam managed to make the best 2D Metroid game. I am absolutely stunned at how great this is. GOTY is gonna be a real battle this year!

68) Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 - Got back to this one after taking a break from the triple GOTY contenders that were Destiny 2/Knack 2/Metroid: Samus Returns. It's certainly a more fun and focused game than I felt the first one was, but didn't change things as much as I would have hoped. There should have been QOL improvements from the 3DS to the Switch for sure, although the game looks good and plays well. Regardless, the ASG series is nice but I prefer the Mega Man games that Inti made (Zero, ZX) to say nothing of the X series. Oh well.

69) Star Fox 2 - This is one of my favorite series and I can say that I greatly enjoyed playing through an official version of Star Fox 2 after so, so many years. The complete version is an improvement on the betas that have been floating around for so long and since it's only about a 30 minute game once you know what you're doing it has a lot of replayability. Not a perfect game but surely a really fun one and I'm glad it's out there for people to enjoy.

70) Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle - Although I was initially charmed by the game, I started to grow weary around world 3. My weariness persisted until the end of world 3 wherein I began enjoying the final few hours as much as I did the start of the game. Fun, challenging, and took me about 25 hours playing somewhat thoroughly. Could see myself returning but not right away.

71) Sonic Mania - 2nd playthrough this time with Knuckles! It's a totally different experience. Grabbed all 7 chaos emeralds this time too.

72) Sonic Mania - 3rd and probably final playthrough with Tails on his own. I have come to really love this game. Got all the chaos emeralds early on and finally got all of the medals for Blue Sphere so I think this would be considered a 100% playthrough :)

73) Middle-Earth: Shadow of War - There was a lot to enjoy about this game for sure. The orcs are the biggest highlight by far as they have great writing and personality and are fun to recruit. Still for all the good it felt like a ton of filler and a very boring open world. Good game, but won't come near my top 10 of 2017 list. Not even close.

I did all the explore levels and some of the adventures ones but didn't like those as much so I feel I got my fill after what I played. Some very creative and fun physics puzzles but sometimes the controls felt unresponsive and I got bored fairly quickly with adventure mode
